how can you digg it down. - stalefries, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10riverbelow: dugg for using "≠"
- iDiggIt42, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Great, you guys already killed it.

Note: No images, and the anchors at the beginning don't work, but it's the only thing there is since all of us are server murders... - KirinDave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@kugo:
Rixstep is being stupid. PATH exploits are older than he is. You can't blame Bash for a fundamental flaw in shell paradigms. The moral of the story? Make sure your homedir isn't world writable (already done) and don't run applications you don't trust. This is the same as it ever was. - greycat0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I throttled Apache down to MaxClients 12 to regain some control over my computer. It's a little 600 MHz fanless VIA EPIA box, and simply can't take the pounding. The wiki is Moin, in Python running via CGI, and it puts a huge load on the system when multiple simultaneous requests come in. I just hope things will go back to normal in a day or two.
- alx242, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7That is moronic. Just make sure no one else is allowed to write to your home directory except for you. I can't speak for Ubuntu (since I use Archlinux) but I have no problem of this from my vanilla installed OS. Neither should anyone else that uses a "good" system.
There is no magical exploit in this, it is just a plain and bad setup of a system. Rixstep should rethink what it writes about and understand the nature of the problem. - juicewvu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Thanks whoever submitted a page to dig that some guy hosts on his home dsl connection.
- RiverBelow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Dial up BTW
- tech42er, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Digg != page views
- psxman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Does the joke fly over all the diggers heads?
(hint: bash is short for bourne-again shell) - antdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Also archive.org's copy: http://web.archive.org/web/20060514181407/http://wooledge.org/mywiki/BashFaq
- tech42er, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4ok.... so?
- SteveMax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The weakest link in security is always the user. If you allow your system to be ***** up, you deserve it to be ***** up. If you want a safe system, keep it safe.
PATH exploits can only happen if a user with enough privileges runs some malicious code, or if a user with normal privileges runs the malicious code (in which case only his home is affected). Don't give morons any kind of privileges, backup often, and you're good to go. - vikinghammer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://bash.zedzone.com/
There's another treasure trove of cool BASH stuff there. And anyone who has something cool can add to it. Just seems like it's relevant, especially with the struggles the server is having. - kutsal, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4And that's relevant to this, how, again?...
- msgyrd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Way to be a huge *****. Nobody who hosts a website on their home computer can handle a full force digg-effect. It's not his fault.
- tech42er, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Well, at least he didn't say toe enter it into your shell. But, it IS dangerous.
- cdmwebs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No NIC card in it?
- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4O RLY?
- jhuebel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2So why is greycat being villified here? Some context would be useful.
- uniplex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0The faq is great and is a testiment of our community at #bash on freenode, just don't come to our channel unless you're prepared to be cursed at by the biggest jackass on freenode -- greycat. Him, his dsl connecting and his ill-configured bot (greybot) leave alot to be desired.
- jhuebel, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3ummm.... huh?
- noxHand, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Monsters like Dylan should be kept off the web.. Never paste a forkbomb without telling it's effect ;)
- uniplex, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2greycat: We'd all be better off if you just died in a day or two *shrug*
- binaryspiral, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4Thanks for the mirror, iDigg
- Kugo, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2The bash maintainers are a$$holes. See http://rixstep.com/2/20070204,00.shtml for an eye opener.

All you need to know. - psxman, on 10/12/2007, -22/+10I run the bash shell on my PC computer with an LCD display.

How fast the server went down - Priceless
For everything else, there's duggmirror.... when it works...
