>He's right... function before form. And this ***** is overkill.
>After a few days you'll be pretty sick of it.
I've been using Beryl for months. I can honestly say I couldn't use Linux without it now. It's not a matter of useless eye candy- it just makes the computer feel more natural to use.
"Function before Form" only counts if the "form" factor impedes the function, which Beryl doesn't. - Philluminati, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14I've been using it for months and I hate to use Linux without it now.
- lonniebiz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10The French are smart. Metisse is really neat. Scale windows, pivot them, tilt them, turn them any which way including backwards!
Also, a French team made Matisse (an awesome Post-Relational database):

I have a lot of respect for the French and I don't like it when people make fun of them just because they've heard other people do the same. Lets have some objectivity here, and look at the product of their work, and not their political popularity.

Yay! Let's start a flame war!
Seriously, we don't need anymore of this "Linux/Windows/Mac sucks" crap. - Philluminati, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10Seriously tho, I think Beryl has some great tools that help with productivity. It gets alot of stick for just being a "pretty feature". Look at my list and see if you agree:
1*) The cube is tranparent. Pre Beryl you had the workspace switcher but if the app wasn't maximised you couldn't see what it was. When the cube is transparent it takes like 2 seconds to find the desktop it's on.
2*) Window Grouping is awesome. You can arrange a group of windows and lock and drag them around together. Great for Gimp and apps with loads of windows. You can minimise, maximise and drag around the whole lot without them losing their position relative to each other.
3*) Magnifying glass - for your nan
4*) A better alt-tab switcher, it has previews including running video
5*) When you touch the top right corner all the windows seperate....you can't say that isn't really useful.
Anyway I dunno if you guys agree. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -5/+12He is right we need stable software and more apps.
- Philluminati, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I completely disagree. Your last statement "Linus should take over" would completely undermine the nature of open source for one.
You seem to be under the impression that WinAmp, Nero Burning Rom, Excel, Access and MIRC are all *obvious* names when the truth is, you were trained to know what they meant.
And as for package management, I again disagree. I use fedora and the yum package manager and everything I've needed has already been in the fedora repositories. I just use Yum install .... and I have no problems with dependancies or anything. But at the end of the day, peoples experiences are their experiences and we all form our own opinions. I guess I'm just lucky. - RetroRufio, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8Anyone notice how freakin fast Gimp loaded on that dude's machine? Why the hell does mine always take 20 seconds!? (Whether it's a P4 with 512 GB of Ram or a 1.6 duo core, 1GB RAM)
- RamboJesus, on 10/11/2007, -4/+10That's fantastic.
I would like to see other Linux Distros do the same thing. - Dracker, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6@dansy
Any linux distro can run Beryl. - straxus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I agree, certainly. I've found Beryl to add a great degree of functionality I can no longer do without. The problem is many of us are getting older and some getting set in their ways. I think just the idea of running an 'eye candy package' rubs some people the wrong way. But whatever. Personally, I use dual monitors and Beryl to get my work down. I find that as long as the animations are set to be simple and quick, they actually add to the flow of the Desktop. To each his own.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7"While choice is great, 400 distros are not. 300 half-working apps are not better than 10 working ones."
hit the nail on the head. - SteveMax, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Actually, Mandrake merged with Conectiva to become the ill-named Mandriva.
- Haapi, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6The longer I work with Metisse, the more I like it. "Rolling up" a window, so one can peek under it and copy some text from a lower window becomes increasingly handy, I'm finding. Tilting windows, not so much, but I don't have space for dual-monitors, so that, too, may become a better use of screen real estate.
- RAiNsTorm, on 10/11/2007, -6/+10Having used Linux since 1995, this is finally the first year where I am actually seeing Linux take some shape and possibly become a viable platform for the average user. But I am not disillusioned and can see that it still has quite a ways to go. Dependencies and libraries need to be dealt with and streamlined, package management needs to become more standardized, and *gasp* less small obscure projects and more effort put into larger targeted ones.
While choice is great, 400 distros are not. 300 half-working apps are not better than 10 working ones. Program names do not still need to be quirky (Yet another...) they need to be descriptive or clever. Collapse down all of these fragmented ventures into a few well run and focused ones and we could take over. Ubuntu (love it or hate it) and Compiz/Beryl are some of the best examples and need to be fanned while the flames are starting rather than forking off and creating Yet Another Tommy or Susie's Uber Distro. I wish Linus would take back some of the reigns and become a central overseer or at least part of some overarching direction and focus. - Haapi, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5... and Brazilian. Mandrake merged with Lycoris to become Mandriva.
- Nodren, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4you know, we all dog on the french, but their country is full of traffic circles and people who actually know how to use them correctly... so say what you will, but until every idiot dies who doesnt understand the very simple concept of a traffic circle, we are pretty much getting pwnd by the french.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+7"LINUX NOT STABLE??? USE WINDOWS THEN LOL ZOMG"
This guy is right. - Haapi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3@stevemax
You are correct, my bad. Lycoris was a US company. - bob301, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2kidjay,
What kinds of problems do you run into when you try to use Linux? The community is pretty good at helping out with technical issues, or suggestion replacements for must-have Windows software. I am sure that a few well-placed questions on forums, in IRC channels, or int he comments of a Digg story could help get you on your way to using Linux full-time.
In addition to the community resources, Google has been pretty great to me when I have to deal with an esoteric software issue that I can't figure out on my own.
I recommend creating a forum account on the official forums for your distribution of choice, and using that as your starting point for getting help. In addition, you may find the links below to be helpful:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/
http://www.linux.org/docs/
http://www.linuxforums.org/
IRC
#linux on efnet
#LFD on freenode
(I am not sure how active those two IRC channels are anymore, but you should be able to find more very easily)
Thanks,
bob - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Basing an OS choice on visuals? Boy I bet you make some good decisions.
- oobuntu, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@rainstorm
Do you actually use KDE? The kde menu states:
Advanced Text Editor (Kate)
File Manager (Thunar File Manager)
Note taker (KJots)
The average user will understand immediately what these programs do. - slapthemonkey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Its fantastic!!!!!
- jlebrech, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Beryl and Compiz are dead, they are called CompComm(temporarily, i think) now
- srg13, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1How do you propose that you install another operating system without partitioning your HDD? Although I suppose that it would be possible to run it out of a folder or something...
Seriously, if you don't want to partition your disk, just get another one - a 20 or 30 GB hard drive has more than enough space. - SanjayM, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Wubi is always moving forward, i don't know how long ago you used it but it may well be the case that you issue is now fixed, its a very new piece of software and well worth keeping an eye on.
- Slipknotic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1When I can install Linux without partioning my hard drive I'll use it. I have in the past and I now have too much data that i do not want to use to try it out. 'Wubi' Was a bitch and got an odd error, which I've seen happen to a few people.
- generalloy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1did you ask about the error on their forums? It worked perfectly on my comp.
http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=234
openSUSE is also coming out with their own installer that you can google around for. Lin something or other. - upin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0512 GB? I like Mandriva. It's the first live Linux cd that worked with everything I have in my computer. I was able to use the internet from the cd. I do wish though, that it had games and make.
- RAiNsTorm, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1@Philluminati
I never said "Linus should take over" I said that there needs to be some sort of pilot to this ship. It can be a large group, not an individual, I do think Linus should be involved though. He is the final arbiter of the kernel and that doesn't undermine Linux or Open Source, it helps keep it from becoming chaotic. In the same way the kernel needs a clearing house, so does the OS and apps. I understand it is a radical idea and the knee jerk reaction is exactly what you did, but I'm telling you it is sorely needed.
OK, tell me what each of these are without looking them up on Google: Noatun, Keystone, Kontour, Kate, Quanta, Kit, Kivio, Kugar. And those are just one small grouping. There are thousands upon thousands of small apps/programs/projects not 10 like major windows burning programs... and how hard is it to call something "Kpaint" or "KDE Paint" or "K Art" etc.? Not all windows programs have good names either, but in windows when the average user sees an executable called "paint" or "notepad" they have an idea what they are clicking... not YUM, YAST, etc. Meta data is important and growing more important as data volumes increase, ignoring it is silly.
YUM is exactly my point, one guy needs YAST, one YUM, one APT, one Stevespackagemanager, etc. That is not helpful or good for Linux. whether I have win 3.11, 95, 98, xp, 2k, vista, whatever... setup.exe makes sense and works. How hard would it be to standardize and have the executable detect the variables and version and adjust/recompile and install? With the speed of today's hardware and networks the little overhead is well worth it. Same with libraries and dependencies, just compile the damn things in and surpass Windows for once in an area and make it EASY. Sure, a few standard libraries are OK or large often used ones, but esoteric 20k libraries could just be included rather than add more hoops and complexity.
I too could be considered "lucky" in all of my years and knowledge, but it is time to go beyond luck and endless searching and tweaking and make it simple, foolproof, and solid. Let go of the elitest attitudes and egos and get it ready for prime time... contrary to popular belief the great unwashed masses are the numbers we need to get acceptance from hardware and software and game publishers. - bigtomrodney, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1Oh no! You mean the French that backed America in its War of Independence? The French who gave America the Statue of Liberty?! The French who found New Orleans?
Yeah good one. - boxxa, on 10/11/2007, -8/+6Those desktops are cool for like an hour then it gets anoying. The most productive thing I have ever done was get dual monitors. My work completion is so much higher.

- h0f5, on 10/11/2007, -11/+2Im patiently waiting until the day when wobbly windows become the trademark of linux...
- Rileyper, on 10/11/2007, -14/+3wee wee
- dansy, on 10/11/2007, -13/+2Mandriva is currently clearly better than Ubuntu - just that the 3D eye-candy are only a very small (and not so important in the long term) part of what an OS should be !
- kidjay, on 10/11/2007, -15/+2and yet, the everyday person still can't actually work using linux. i certainly will never be able to.
- JAVandiver, on 10/11/2007, -17/+3But it is French!!!
