- alfredoportes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25I use it. If OS X does, it is user friendly. If Vista does it, it is user friendly. If Linux does it, then is bad. I do not understand this logic. If somebody wants to do some crazy plugin that is good. If somebody wants to improve the desktop usability that is good too. But it is not up to you to decide, you are not coding, and you are not contributing by complaining.
- strabes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20That's not a problem with linux. It's a feature. It protects you from yourself/malware.
Check out www.ubuntuforums.org for help and such. It's a great resource. - wyattearp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Yep. There are never any bugs after you declare a product as final, look at Windows :-) ... it's final right?
- alfredoportes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I think the people with XGL are having problems with it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Here are some crazy screenshots I made of Beryl:
http://forum.beryl-project.org/viewtopic.php?f=51&t=2928
(And you can digg it if you want to: http://digg.com/linux_unix/Crazy_Beryl_Screenshots )
They show what the 3D windows and window picker look like when you have loads of windows open. - roosterjm2k2, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Rudy...your response is just typical canned crap.
I would bet you havent installed or used it, right?
There is actually a good bit of usability features in it. Some features are just for fun as well...its a mix, its the beauty of community developed and supported software, you can, in fact, make everyone happy - when everyone is contributing.
Take a look at this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eqcyAhWzqSo
Its a more "professional" presentation of the features... window grouping/tabbing is very helpful, the switchers are nice, negative is good for reading poorly desiged web pages...Zoom is an obvious one.... - msgyrd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Feeding the troll, but Beryl offers many workspace improvements, even if you turn off the min/max window effects, the wobbly windows when moved or even the transparencies. The expose functions like OSX is a huge improvement for working with multiple windows (so much that Vista tried to copy it also). The thumbnails above your taskbar is nice if you're working with image editing. Even the cube is nice because you can mentally create a spatial reference of where your project is.
I suspect if you don't see the benefits of these things, you don't work on a computer. If your job consists of typing one word document at a time or just writing email, sure, it's no help, but if you're developing a web application, it's definitely nice to have test browsers contained on one desktop, your editor/IDEs on the next, and image editors on a separate desktop. - roosterjm2k2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I cant speak for the "fanboys"
Im not one
I run vista on one pc, linux on the other, own a macbook pro, and 2 other laptops, one linux and one freebsd. I actuall prefer to form intelligent opinions on things by actually using them. I would bet though, you don't particularly follow that rule.
Sticks and stones....
Going through your comments history though, its apparent that you make a point to go out of your way to insult linux/mac users... - Axim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8i would google what a release candidate entails before you step it up another notch in the durrr department
- rudy23, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10login as root and the root password you chose during installation. that should fix it.
btw whats wondows? - roosterjm2k2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Bias.
When did MS or apple give you multiple desktops to begin with? (Apple has, recently, i know)
They dont "make" you do anything, the same old ctrl-alt-left/right switches the desktop like it does in normal linux.
The animations on close/min/maximize are optional...and fast (most videos slow them down so the video capturers get them) ...
You just have something up your ass about beryl. If you don't like it, don't use it. Thats the beauty of linux, you choose what you want to use or not use. Just because you choose not to use it doesnt mean you should push your feelings or preferences on everyone, or spew useless unhelpful ***** all over the internet... - inkubux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6broke my previous beryl also :(
I guess anew release will come in a couple of hours resolving this issue - pauldonnelly, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Beryl isn't a desktop; it's a window manager. Gnome, KDE, and XFCE are desktops with which it can be used. Probably ROX would work too.
- cookdsc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6broke my beryl :(
had to go back to version 0.14 for now... - adinu79, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Cool. I'm running an earlier prerelease version and it still has a few bugs. Can't wait to get a more or less final version
- roosterjm2k2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6mkrygeri
2 questions.
1)When was the last time you installed linux. (in the last 6-8 months, most of the major distros have came leaps and bounds in terms of ease of use, epecially in the installation...both the OS itself and the software)
2)Have you tried Ubuntu? Installing software is brainless...really. Use the synaptic manager, search it for software, click install. All dependencies are resolved automatically. Not only that, but it handles keeping software up to date, all the while maintaining dependancies and interoperability.
I used to have the same problems with linux, but its totally different now. Make sure to pick up a distro made foe home pc use. I know they all can be, but the better ones, like Ubuntu, OpenSUSE, and Fedora make things really easy.
By the way, I installed ubuntu on a laptop last night. Total install time from start of downloading the iso, to a fully functional system with beryl installed, was about an hour. That was including installing ati drivers and broadcom wireless drivers. The latter 2 tasks used to take forever to do, but with the newer OSs and the better support online now, they are brainless.
My mom uses linux...and she really has no problems with it...and I dont have to clean out her system every now and then.
Lastly, if you still don't feel comfortable with linux, don't use it. I dont try to talk people into it. Windows is fine OS for most people, so if your happy there, stick with it. Just wanted to point out that your view of linux is very much a year-old view...this last year has been amazing for linux. - ImaLamer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This is the part I like:
Forget Your Reading Glasses
Websites keep using smaller and smaller text as screen resolutions keep getting bigger and bigger. Reading on the computer without binoculars is getting harder and harder, but Beryl can give you a virtual telescope!
> Zoomed Interaction
Beryl offers a proportional zoom that allows users to interact with their desktop while zoomed, working with tiny text, and tiny widgets was never easier. Super + Mouse Scroll is all it takes to help your eyes out.
> Future Hopes
Sometime in the future Beryl hopes to implement the GNOME Mag API, giving proper zoom support to the visually impaired. This combined with the current Neg plugin *inverts the color values on your screen* is a very potent combination.
It's genius because I'm using a Widescreen desktop, 42" at 1080i. I need a quick and easy zoom, and the Windows API doesn't scale as it should. This will be the thing that brings be back to Linux on the desktop. Actually Linux to the living room and television. Great for my HTPC!
Windows offers a magnifier in a window, that is on the edge of the screen, this appears to allow for full screen zooming.... very nice. - rudy23, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7thank you for that. I was wondering why the Beryl site has absolutely no screenshots that I could easily access to get a feel of what the product is like.
- skold1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6your login account is not a member of the admin group.
if you want to change it so that you have access to the system configuration,
you have to login with a user who's in the admin group already ( the first user you created) and change the group of the user where you don't have the access with the sudo password under the menu entry system / users. - Grassmunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I've been a linux user for about 15 years now and to be honest i have to say that though beryl is a fantastic upgrade the one thing that still needs to be seriously fixed is their ridiculous software mechanics. I think a post I saw on the Ubuntu forums describes it well:
"Okay, i want to install some software but its not in any of the repositories how do i do that?"
He was given an answer, told where to get the install scripts etc etc
"Okay, i downloaded all the software but i dont know what to do, what do i click to install this"
The answer: Open a terminal and do ./configure make and make install.
Now on any other mature desktop based operating system it is infinetely easier to install software. I eager await the day that you can download a peice of software, access it through the desktop and just double click it to install, in linux. (dont get me wrong, i freaking love Ubuntu, but the linux desktop as a whole has a ways to come because unless your software is in a repository of some sort, either DEB or RPM its almost impossible to install unless you've been around the block) - msgyrd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5bias is a longtime linux/mac troll...visit his profile and read his other comments.

"Isn't that what you Linux fanboys doing here on digg?"
No, bias. That's what you are doing here, trolling on digg. - Snarfy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Does anybody know if "better multihead support" means that beryl works with xinerama + nVidia? I could not get the previous version to work with dual monitors + dual video + nVidia. Xinerama doesn't support XRandR or something. Single video card works if you use twinview, but that's only for single video card + dual monitors. Hopefully this build fixes it. Can't wait to get home to try it :)
- Henwood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I would have to say that Beryl is both tasteless and unnecessary, the effects overload makes me barf every time I even dare to look at one of those useless videos of bouncing swinging burning windows that would completely put your off your work. It is like someone else said "Beryl is a lesson in what could be done, not what should be done." it makes aero look pretty and refined! It has now become a personal hate of mine why does every beryl update from 0.123487 to 0.123488 make the front page! And no I'm not a fan boy, I have no preference between windows and OS X, or maybe even a decent linux distro, but not Beryl!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hey guys, I was also having problems running it with my Fedora 6 64 box && nVidia Card. Was getting the white screen of death
A temp fix for now is to run beryl like this;
$ berryl --use-copy
That should let it run, it's a little slower but will be ok until we get the fixes - EgoDemens, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4@mkrygeri You sir, are a retard and a tool, welcome to my block list. It's not hard anymore. End of story. All the arguments you made against Linux have been and can still be made against Windows in the forms of "dll hell", and basic system drivers. So if Windows is your measure of easy then Linux is well within your capabilities. To agree with rootsterjim: no one forced you in but you are more then welcome to ***** off.
- alfredoportes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4@rudy23
I respect your opinion, but it will be nice that if you would say how could it be improved. If not, it sounds like you are just ranting. - alfredoportes, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5@bias
>>When did Microsoft or Apple put stupid fire/water/thunder animations when you close a program? When did they make you to spin around a 3D desktop instead of just click a button!?
So because Apple and Microsoft doesnt do it, then it means somebody else cannot do it?
>>And you are saying that we should not complain if we are not coding? Are you retarded? Then what are >>criticizing, commenting, feedback for? Only the people who made Beryl can talk about Beryl?
>>It could be improved by not making so much unnecessary effect that get in the way of your users!
If you do not like the effects do not use them. There are other people that like them (like the creators maybe), so they have to remove them because you say so? Think again who is the "retarded" one like you eloquently put it. - jsully, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I avoided this one since the last update (1.99/2.0 Beta 1) broke my Beryl as well. Beta 2 fixed it - that's what I'm sticking with. A number of people have reported serious issues on the forums as well. Avoid for now.

Take also a look at
https://help.ubuntu.com/
contains a great lot of information about running ubuntu. And don't give up, linux is a great OS, as long as you have enough patience and curiosity to find out what it's all about.
Every OS has its own ways of operating; but most of persons have used Windows and are acquainted with it, even if they had to get acquainted with it at first; that doesn't mean all OSs' function in the same way.
Happy hacking! - tommydr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20.20-RC1 is 0.20 Release Candidate 1, not 2.0; for who doesn't remember, or know, the naming schemes of applications in development, a zero-dot-number version is fairly early in the development of a piece of software. I really hope xinerama works for you! If it doesn't, hit the forums and talk about it! :)
http://forum.beryl-project.org/ - burty89, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The name & version of your linux distribution would be helpful
- duxxyuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Fair point. I guess you're entitled to your opinion.
I use only the task switcher and the desktop overview feature. Those two effects make beryl worth installing. - tommydr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@shinda
Posting is so yesterday... use google or youtube searching beryl, nah, nevermind, did it for you! :)
Here are some nice videos, some were posted also on digg (also retrievable with search!)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEDtRV1fHoU

How about "wow"? (not the TM) ;) - Snarfy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nope, it doesn't work. Beryl + xinerama still gives me the "No XRandR" error. I can only get beryl to work with dual screens using one video card + twinview. I read a forum post somewhere that says it's slated to be fixed in the 0.3 version. Too bad this release is only 0.2rc1.
- msgyrd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Currently there are multihead options, like having two cubes, or combining both monitors onto the same cube. I don't have two monitors, so I can't test, but options are available now that weren't in the last revision I had.
- Ademan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Uh, notice the version number 0.2.0, it's not even version 1.0...
- Shirokun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2What repositories do I need for 2.0 version?
- EgoDemens, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No one gives a ***** what you choose to do or not do. Your comment is completely ***** useless, much like you probably are in society. Next time you feel like commenting don't, instead do us all a favour and jump in front of a moving train. I'll block you now that I've blown off some 'idiot digg comment' steam and hope that enough others do the same to get you banned.
- JOOH8R, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i like that beryl is not so Gnome dependent like compiz. don't get me wrong i accept that gnome is a damn good DE but my preference is KDE and to install these gnome dependices in KDE can sometimes be hazardous
thats why Beryl gets my vote - easydom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To think that this software is free and it did not come from one of the major software manufacturers gives one a sense of of hope ,that so much more is possible and we may not be constrained by either the visions of one man ala Steve Jobs or one company ala Microsoft.
It is easy to start a debate as to the effectiveness of Beryl, but I think these types of programs are necessary as they are indicative of someone trying to push the boundaries of user interaction. It appears that some of these programmers are not solely concerned with functionality but also with the concept of a GUI being art. I can really think of no better way to describe the rationale behind having your desktop fly through stars. It will really be interesting to see how far such ventures will be taken by the Open Source community and in my opinion is indicative of one of the strengths of the open source community.
This is not a knock on either company as they have both contributed and will continue to contribute many useful ideas. Still I do not think you can argue against the very cool notion of a group of "unknowns" creating such a wonderful ( apologies for the hyperbole ) product. - sdotsen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I tried running Beryl and all it did was freeze my PC. It's cool and all, but needs a little more work!
- tommydr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Of course it does need more work! And a helping hand.... so you could join the forums of Beryl and help out, or post a bug about your freezes! Look some previous posts for the links, everyone will try and help out, and you will be helped as well. :)
- eggshelly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@boza111, I was in your position once, never having tried linux.
If you installed ubuntu, it automatically configured a tool called sudo. It's a nice mix of security and convenience. Basically, your user can gain root-like privileges if you re-enter your password. So when you click on something and it says access is denied, you should get a password box. Enter your own password (not the root's) and you will get access. If this does not happen, go on http://www.ubuntuforums.org/ and ask for help and make sure to tell them everything you did exactly the way you did it (likely something is not installed right). If you want to use Beryl under the friendliest distribution of Linux, you should try Mandriva 2007. I find it's easier to set up Beryl in that than in Ubuntu. However, the Ubuntu forums are a little more helpful than the Mandriva ones (Mandriva is profit oriented). Anyway, Linux can be a pain at times but it's worth the effort, you'll have a lot of fun exploring, good luck! - tommydr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Join therapy, you troll... I'm sure the likes of you need it. "Period." (Idiot).
- tommydr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@Grassmunk
It takes patience. Once you really know how your system works, then you will also be able to do things with less fuss, quickly and painlessly. My first approach to linux was with Red Hat 8.3 about 5 years ago (if my memory doesn't rick me), and I was so disappointed I deleted the partition and went back to win98SE. I just wanted the "click and go" thing; nowadays, I don't feel like it is so important: my security is, my freedom is, and my choice is. Even if I have to go through a few more steps to configure something, knowing how to do it and what to touch on my system is highly satisfying, and resolves all my problems for good. "With a little help from my friends", on the net, forums, mailing lists and such.
It's all about patience.
Patience and the net.
