Beryl 3D Window Layer Plugin
High-quality versions and screenshots at:
http://www.saguratus.com/nick/beryl/layers/ - geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22Forks usually occur from rivalry, someone decides their idea of how something works is better, and thusly takes it in that direction. The two goals are well overlapping, and there is a friendly exchange of code between the two groups, but that being said, it still constitutes a rivalry ("my idea is better than their idea"). "Friendly Rivalries" are quite common in the OS world.
- wedderburn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21just finished the splash last night :D... hope you all like
- SanjayM, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21Beryl can't be held accountable for XGL's lack of stability. Beryl is primarily aimed towards AIGLX now, XGL is really just a bit of a hack to work around some proprietary driver restrictions (Lack of texture from pixmap GLX extensions). Beryl on AIGLX is nothing short of rock solid in 1.2, (Yet to use 1.3 not from SVN). Seriously consider ditching that ATI card or getting the latest AIGLX compatible driver for your card ;)
Sanjay. - krinthekuz, on 09/16/2008, -0/+17popular is relative. if you're a geek, you know what beryl is.
- diggapleaze, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12correction: I meant to say that Ubuntu is the favorite among *Beryl* developers.
- vh1`, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I haven't used beryl in a while, but last time I did pretty much every hotkey was configurable
- bigtomrodney, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14How so? I find it pretty stable.
- jbus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I've been using Beryl since it was first released and haven't had any noticeable problems. If stability is your concern only use the official release. Beryl SVN can and will break from time to time.

I hope you make the transition. Just a note: things can get a little confusing for the newcomer when it comes to the Linux desktop GUI. Let me map it all out for you to make things clearer so you can make the transition easier:
X11 Windows System (X.org implementation) --> windowing system server
Metacity --> window manager (window elements like scrollbars and minimize buttons based on the GTK widget tool kit)
GNOME --> desktop environment (a collection of GTK programs that integrate with each other for the sake of usability and coherence)
**The following are NOT required but allow for pretty composited desktop effects:
XGL vs. AIGLX --> a compositing architecture to allow OpenGL API to be used for regular desktop use (AIGLX is an extension of X.org and XGL is a replacement of X.org)
Beryl vs. Compiz --> a collected suite of OpenGL effects, often labeled as a "composite window manager" since they are typically used to replace a traditional window manager like Metacity with accelerated graphics
Try out Sabayon for a Live CD test of desktop composite effects, and openSUSE for a one-click install of XGL and Compiz (if your graphics card is supported). Ubuntu seems to be the favorite for Compiz developers and testers. Good luck! - theeggman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I have to say the YouTube video was impressive. This is probably the first window manager for Linux I think I would use if I ever decide to run Linux.
- bobbyi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Wow, I want it. This is finally convincing me to burn one of those live DVDs and check it out.
- r3tex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I don't know what you guys are talking about, I've run beryl 1.3 for a while now, and the only problem is the xv video overlay on my Intel card. No instability though. Beryl is sweet.
- justinjacobs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I use [ deb http://3v1n0.tuxfamily.org edgy beryl-svn ]
Sure, it's the svn repo, but I've had no problems getting 0.1.3 through it. - foodude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I'm using it and it is quite stable. Love it for the nice "live" alt+tab dialog and the ability to zoom smoothly (for webdesigners: turn off antialiasing while zooming - makes it easier to create pixel-perfect websites!)
- motang, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Beryl is great, time to update my version.
- drizek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8That was AWESOME!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8posting youtube videos of beryl is the best way to promote alternative operating systems.
- shinigami2057, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I miss xsnow...
- MikeCampo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I'm just going to block you now SebastianMoser because you're so lame! Ahaha.
- ericmoritz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I've been running the svn version for a couple days. The transparent cube is stunning to say the least. Make sure you add a rotating skydome for that extra oomph
- JorgeGT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Is there any live cd distro with this version? I have no sandbox to play with other OS's :-(
- d0nk, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11I wouldn't exactly call it a rival of compiz. Beryl is a fork of compiz's code.
- TannerLD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Nice! Thats...different. Good job.
- wusch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I hope they fix the nvidia driver, my gf4 does not work with beryl since there are bugs in the drivers :(
- skwid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I love the splash wedderburn ! I was quite surprised too, because I didn't expect it to change from svn ;)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5hm, it'd be better if the snow stayed in the cube, you know, like those old toys..
- HonoredMule, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4That 3D window stuff is the first thing I wanted/thought of (and saw as actually useful) when all this hardware rendered desktop stuff first got started. Gotta get me that.
- thepxc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@JorgeGT
SabayonLinux (XGL and AIGLX): http://www.sabayonlinux.org
I'm also pretty sure that Mandriva now ships with AIGLX and SuSe with XGL, but I'm not sure about those. - stormgren, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Repos probably haven't updated yet. Just be patient.
- euskal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I ve been testing beryl since 0.1.1
the most relevant of this release in my opinion is:
*Lots of Memory Leaks Plugged
*Overall Code Cleanup
beryl 0.1.3 is very stable I am running it on a Geforce MX400 and 256mb 133mhz DIMM
I ve got a tidy mini-wiki on my blog for those being anxious on the realease
http://vacagnu.blogspot.com
it should help you to easily update to 0.1.3 from svn....ANY DISTRO!!!!
cheers....!!!
(the repos for Ubuntu is out there, but other distros might have to wait)
- mbiesz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@diggapleaze: Please don't spread misinformation...
For one, window managers are NOT in charge of widgets like scrollbars, etc. and have nothing to do with GTK. Also, your post would have people believe that compiz/beryl are only composite managers. They both have composite and window managers included! - justinjacobs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You just use it the same as any other repo. Try taking a look at this:
http://wiki.beryl-project.org/wiki/Install/Ubuntu/Edgy/AiGLX#Add_repositories - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Which repository holds it? The latest version that [ deb http://ubuntu.beryl-project.org edgy main ] holds is 0.1.2
- tech42er, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hey guys, do you think it'll work on my machine? I have 768 MB of RAM, but my graphics is pathetic "Intel Integrated".
- theboyqueen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Is anyone maintaining an updated repo for Dapper?
- ericmoritz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2ATI (fglrx) + XGL works very good on my laptop. Though I think the implementation of XGL is silly when compared to AIGLX, but I'll take what I can get.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@diggapleaze
Thanks for the clarification. All the window manager jargon gets really confusing.
Anyhow, it didnt really matter what you wrote in your above post.. with a name like "diggapleaze," you get an automatic digg from me. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Which repository holds it? The latest version that [ deb http://ubuntu.beryl-project.org edgy main ] holds is 0.1.2 .
- ericmoritz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ubuntu repos: http://wiki.beryl-project.org/wiki/Install/Ubuntu
Debian repos: http://wiki.beryl-project.org/wiki/Install/Debian - hpsmasher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Its running on my laptop under Kubuntu 6.10 right now and looks really great. No water effects for me tho :(. Also, turning off the trail focus plugin makes a big difference in performance on both my laptop (intel graphics) and my desktop (nvidia).
- metalhead3767, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@tech42er
Don't use the reply button to get your post to the top of the page.
And yes it will work but not well. - Vinvin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My favourite video: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4471114863140451531&q=beryl
;) - Xenogis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does anyone know if the bug where you got a white screen with certain cards is fixed yet? I would love to run beryl on my laptop, but it is too much work to set it up on Slackware for me to try again right now.
- metalhead3767, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yea, its cool how it changes from each release.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It is a little buggy, but I'm not sure whether it's necessarily Beryl or the ATI radeon drivers I'm using. For instance, when I enable the snow effect, it crashes the window manager and I have to go right-click the emerald icon in the system tray and choose to start the window manager again. Same goes for the blur plugin and desktop plane plugin. And I still can't seem to get the water effects running properly.
Also video doesn't work now. I can open an AVI file w/ Totem and using the Beryl window manager the video won't show, but I can hear the audio. Switching back to metacity allows me to view the video... so not really sure what's going on there.
FWIW, I'm using Ubuntu Edgy w/ AIGLX/Beryl and a Radeon 9000 video card w/ ATI Radeon drivers (open source) - sccloatrtk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1download the high quality vid, youtube version doesn't do it justice
http://www.saguratus.com/nick/beryl/layers/
so amazing, can't wait to upgrade to 0.1.3, i hope they fixed the problems I was having with dual head display :) - metalhead3767, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just give in and partition linux. You know you want to. : )
Opensuse and Ubuntu are good to start with. -
