- theGrue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, I would have loved this when I had pages hosted on Prohosting and Tripod and whatnot.
- Dygear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No, it looks at the number of diggs in the number of hours, or minutes it has been on the digg site. If it is getting a lot of attention very fast, then it is probably a good story, and shold get to the front page. You can see items with only 12 diggs on the front page, if it gets those 12 diggs in around 30 seconds.
- rekrapt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thought Police Suck.
- kiranlightpaw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I disagree.
SSI is still very relevant for doing simple tasks like including the same header in static HTML documents. All the overhead of PHP/CGI/whatever to do a simple include, or let the server do it itself?
+digg! - d3designs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0thegrue...
I remember those hosting sites... wow that was a long time ago.
I thought SSI was like the "coolest" thing ever.
Now it is very lame... with PHP you can do SO much more.
And it is still VERY fast! - carcus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0While we are on it what about the term "lame" it's also offensive to some, it's just so dated that no one realizes it's connotation, comparing things to crippled beings. Doesn't really matter to me, I just think it's an interesting argument. I don't really use the term "gay" to describe things because the terms history is in comparing something to someone else's way of life that they might not agree with, anyone who denies that is lying or from last century. flame on.
- v3xt0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lol... "Try and use PHP on an embedded machine barely powerful enough to run thttpd or lighttpd (if you want SSL)... "
uhh, no thanks.
I'll use my rocket-powered php scripting engine, thanks. =) - 3Den, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0While on the topic...
Does anyone know whether there is a significant overhead difference between apache SSI and php4 includes? - compu73rg33k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Oh how gay, Digg takes out php code. Pretend there are php tags for this.
include ( "file.php" );
echo $_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR'];
OMFG1!1 Let's use SSI instead. - bundaegi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Try and use PHP on an embedded machine barely powerful enough to run thttpd or lighttpd (if you want SSL)... yup, suddenly, SSI start making sense.
What I want is an _open_ SSI/CSS/HTML templating system. First one to pull one off gets all my diggs++. Besides, that's what the BBC uses to generate their dynamic content http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/4606719.stm - masterdebater, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Indeed.. why bother using SSI when most web hosts now have PHP enabled by default. Doing an "include_once" in PHP is easier, requires most likely no additional configuration to your server, and gives the exact same results. Someone mentioned, "Lets program like its 1999!" -- indeed. Lets move on and forget about using SSI, and having to rename all your files to .shtml (yeah yeah - I know all about htaccess and changing that too - but this is a newbie manual right?). Anyone remember seeing a .shtml extension for a web page recently? I don't...
- rekrapt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'm really sick of people using the term "SSI" pejoratively. Besides being rude and insulting, it's just not factually correct. Server Side Includes tend to do things with flair, laser-focus and style. We shouldn't even care whether people use SSI in 2005 or not ... might as well wear a dress.
- chime, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I just don't understand how stuff gets on the digg front page. Really.
- theGrue, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Maybe digg takes into account when it's a slow newsday?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0reported lame story. i probably wouldn't have cared if it was on the back pages, but the front page it doesn't belong
- aonic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0how did this get to the frontpage with 25 diggs?
- compu73rg33k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Omfg SSI is so good1!!
Wait, we could easily do this with some simple php.
***** that, let's use SSI. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Bah, lame!

Merry Christmas from http://geeksaresexy.blogspot.com - zestynet, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I'm really sick of people using the term "gay" perjoratively. Besides being rude and insulting, it's just not factually correct. We gays tend to do things with flair, laser-focus and style. We wouldn't be caught dead using SSIs in 2005 ... might as well wear pegged, acid-washed jeans.
- rjoseph, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0No, SSI hasn't been relevant for years, and will never be again: compared to modern technologies, it is insecure and expensive, and anyone who uses it should be taken out back and... well, you know. And the more I see stories like this on the front page, the more I realize that reddit.com is far better than this crappy place.
