You do know what the "L" in LAMP stands for, right? - LeroyBrown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15@TheShad0w
No, that would be a FAPP setup: FreeBSD Apache Postgres PHP.
I do admit, I like the idea of fapping at work. Long live FreeBSD! - CGreen, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15I like pancakes.
- Phil246, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12@sybersnake : You are mistaken. Debian based distros use apt-get (and dpkg)
http://www.debian.org/doc/FAQ/ch-pkgtools.en.html - gypsyjoe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Just as long as BDSM is OK.
- scuzzman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13No, really, it didn't. You're just an idiot.
- punkrock4life, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10this is an informative slide show presentation on where bsd came from and where it is now. very well done.
- teksimian, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15My good man, you are retarded. I do not see how pkg_add or the ports collection are at all worse than apt-get. if anything they're superior.
- wickedlogic, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13I was there for it, and it was even more amusing in person.
- TheShad0w, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12@kd1s
I don't quite understand what your saying...
sudo portinstall apache2 php5 postgre8
Hey look I have a LAMP server set up! ... whats so hard about that again? - dracheflieger, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14Too stoopit to use ports?
- dattaway, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Good to see interesting history presented. Since it was video, I was wanting at least some camera shots of the room in with the slides.
- dixongroup, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Actually, it's Jason Dixon. But thanks for the compliment. :)

"Might be useful if it wasn't all in Apple formats. Try using something that the rest of the world likes."
Actually, I used mpeg4 (H.264/AAC) for one of them. I thought most people could view this; I have no problem viewing it with MPlayer or VLC. My page even says that if you can't view them, please contact me and I'll do what I can to make it available for you in a compatible format. - sremick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Netcraft confirms it: FreeBSD is growing:
http://news.netcraft.com/archives/2004/06/07/nearly_25_million_active_sites_running_freebsd.html
Yes, I know it's a couple years old, but it's not THAT old and the trend it shows goes back 2y prior to that so I have a hard time imagining a sudden downturn. However it'd be nice if Netcraft updated their study. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I just saved a bunch of money on my car insurance by switching to BSD.
- ThatsUnpossible, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6@clickwhir
You might be surprised to learn that mp4 is MPEG. - 256byteram, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6"Try using something that the rest of the world likes."
What, like WMV? - dixongroup, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@jeberle
"Why poke fun at OS X?"
Because I can. Same reason I poked fun at the other BSDs as well (primarily Net and DragonFly). We all had a good time laughing at ourselves, that's what makes BSD users great. :)
[ Of course, the Guinness didn't hurt either! ] - invader, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6"Linux users might get squeemish!"
oh yeah? i just about fell out of my chair laughing
ROFLMAO != squeemish - dixongroup, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6As is mine. :) The entire presentation was created with Keynote on my MacBook Pro.
- whiteguysamurai, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4When people say linux has a long way to go to suit desktop users, it goes much further for the open sourced BSD flavors.
the question is, what can bsd do for the average person? - heavyal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Awesome presentation. Personally, I use Ubuntu on the desktop but all the web servers I admin run FreeBSD. I didn't realize til now what a rich history FreeBSD actually has and this vid has definitely raised my appreciation for the OS. I may even try switching over at least one of my desktop stations to it for testing purposes.
Thanks Jason and co. - Hindu_Wardrobe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Yeah, I'm a rabid Linux fan and I still thought that was hilarious.
- cajunman4life, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@clickwir...
"I've never heard anyone refer to it as OS TEN."
Then apparently you haven't listened to a Steve Jobs keynote in the last couple of years. It's OS TEN. Not "OS ECKS." - burke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Yeah, I was extremely impressed with how well the presentation flowed, nevermind all the hilarious parts. That was great.
- fuzzyping, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3There are high-res versions available at http://talks.dixongroup.net/nycbsdcon2006/.
- clickwir, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4http://talks.dixongroup.net/nycbsdcon2006/
"First and foremost, I would like to thank the unique presentation styles of Dick Hardt and Lawrence Lessig for inspiring me to create this presentation."
So, yes he was inspired by it. Hardly a "rip" though. - B-o-K, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Dugg!
Awesome - check for 3 different types of this media here: http://talks.dixongroup.net/nycbsdcon2006/ - clickwir, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7No.... X is just X.
I've never heard anyone refer to it as OS TEN.
Some like it, some hate it. IMO, OSX is the worst thing to happen to BSD. - eantoranz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Very funny.... specially the "we share a common goal" section. :-D
- jrjr, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7and we all know what happened some months after the last slide: gentoo was born
- whiteguysamurai, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9If the two of you hope to get anywhere near windows adoption, you should work together.
- dohidied, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Awesome talk. And for the record, my inbred version of BSD is running just fine.
- geezusfreeek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Hilarious, biased, interesting, and insightful. All the qualities of a a video worth watching.
- ellisgl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Linux became the big buzz word years ago. xBSD distro's never got much shine - but I don't think they wanted it then or right now.
Linux has one problem - too many developers building the same thing, but in different ways.
xBSD has a small group of developers - all developing different things or together.
PC BSD from what I have been told - I have not yet played with it yet - takes care of dependency issues. Something lacked in Linux distro's of today. Like they took cue from Windows, when the Linux dev people are not wanting to take that route.
From all that I have seen - xBSD has had advantages of speed and scalability over Linux but distros in the Linux realm have shown better hardware support. - jellygraph, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Lol, I'm a Linux boob and I still think the last slide was hilarious
- speel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Nothing.
- dixongroup, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@3Den
"Presentation style totally ripped from [Dick Hardt's Identity 2.0 keynote]."
Yes, I completely borrowed the presentation style from Dick Hardt. I contacted him beforehand to make sure he was cool with it. Not only was he fine with it, he even gave me additional pointers on the delivery of the slides. I have given him and Lawrence Lessig due credit at every opportunity. - ronaldb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2He should have made his website with ASP .NET pages...
- masterakowski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Last slide was so funny. I saw it already, but it was funny anyway.
- scosol, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2agreed- "nothing"- the BSDs have no concern for "average" users- come drink the kool aid, you'll find things you haven't imagined :)
- elix3r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2that was a long video, but well worth watching. John Dixon is the man!
- cajunman4life, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3BSD: It's so easy, a caveman can use it!
PS - Sorry for the bad joke. - phill, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Hey! I use BSD. Quit making fun of me!
- stalinvlad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Buy a Mac and find out
- foxtyke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This video was entertaining and educational, I did not think that was possible...
- evilrobot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2@clickwhir
boy... you sure are a genius. MPEG4 is not n "Apple Exclusive" format... and quicktime is available as a standalone download...
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html
I know it might be hard for you to understand, but that page provides 2 (two) options.
The first one is to download Quicktime with iTunes... the 2nd (second) one is just quicktime.
And, you dont have to bitch about giving them your email address either... just uncheck the boxes and click download. - excession, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yeah, so? It's effective and enjoyable.
- dohidied, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Haha, nice. So was the inbred comment an inside joke among BSD users?
