- brianpeiris, on 03/06/2009, -2/+20Shutter provides additional utilities that Print Screen doesn't.
FTA:
Shutter is a feature-rich screenshot program. You can take a screenshot
of a specific area, window, your whole screen, or even of a website -
apply different effects to it, draw on it to highlight points, and then
upload to an image hosting site, all within one window. - ptFoe, on 03/05/2009, -0/+16they finally changed the name
- kd420, on 03/06/2009, -0/+14I would like to meet the person who found nothing wrong with putting "Scrot" in a name.
- leamanc, on 03/06/2009, -0/+13Windows has had it if you pay $70-$100 for Snagit. Don't make it sound like it comes with the OS, because Windows' built-in screenshot capabilities suck. OS X's Grab and KScreenshot totally own "Print scr"
- smotpoker, on 03/06/2009, -4/+15Only if you think pressing "Print Screen" or going to GIMP->File->Acquire->Screenshot is hard. Perhaps you should RTFA before commenting... that is the same attitude people years ago had about multiple desktops and tabbed browsing. "Was it really that hard using one Desktop/multiple windows?"
The point isn't that the old way was hard but that the new way is easier, more efficient, better streamlined, etc - 4321234, on 03/06/2009, -0/+11You screenshot app haters disgust me.
- Atsumori, on 03/06/2009, -7/+17Was it really that hard before to take a screenshot?
- NOFXY, on 03/06/2009, -1/+9HA, the previous name it had was hilarious. G-scrote. sounds like a decent app and I commend them for the name change.
- Vadi0, on 03/06/2009, -0/+8Last time I tried it, it couldn't capture a site for me or upload or anything.
- Vadi0, on 03/06/2009, -0/+7Yep. This version has some really nice improvements over GScrot too. plus ubuntu repository links changed, so update if you were subscribed
- xmichelo, on 03/06/2009, -0/+7Travel several several thousand kilometers in any direction and you will find countries full of people who wouldn't care...
- n0deal, on 03/06/2009, -0/+6I just use the screenshot plugin that is part of Compiz. Works pretty well. Doesn't seem to have all the bells and whistles this application has though. Congrats on the release.
- brettalton, on 03/06/2009, -1/+6That's cool, but gnome-screenshot (aka 'prt scrn' on my keyboard) is good enough for me :)
- wallclimber, on 03/07/2009, -1/+6Well, for all the commentors that claim this software is no big deal, why on Earth did you bother to read and comment on it??? Sour grapes, maybe?
@Mockylock, Golly, how nice to know that Windows Vista/7 has a "snipping tool"...surely that makes Vista/7 very...uh...special?
For those who worked hard to design this useful piece of software, you have MUCH to be proud of. I really like it! Your hard work is VERY appreciated. :o) - rpgmakr, on 03/06/2009, -0/+5The KDE screenshot app did a lot of this things a lot time ago. I don't use KDE but I noticed how their screenshot app was a lot better than gnome's.
- DigitalPioneer, on 03/06/2009, -4/+9Vista's native screenshot tool: take a picture of the BSOD of your choice, with ease and style!!!
- Raz0rEdge, on 03/06/2009, -0/+5DIGG submissions are not all "news" items..some of those are just interesting stuff..
That being said, as feature-rich as this screenshot app is, it's use is unfortunately limited mainly because of the number of times someone needs to take a screenshot.. - flintmecha, on 03/06/2009, -3/+8If you've gotten a BSOD in Vista, you're doing it wrong.
- MonkeyFarts, on 03/06/2009, -0/+4Yeah, Print Screen or Alt+Print and GIMP works, but this is easier. Seriously, convenience isn't a bad thing. Just fire this app up and take a screenshot of a section of the screen in a fraction of the time it would take you to edit a full screenshot with GIMP.
Also, Print Screen can't take a screenshot of an entire web page. Granted, you can just make a PDF out of it, but if you'd rather not use the PDF format... - MWeather, on 03/06/2009, -0/+4Lol, you think Linux has less than 23 screenshot apps?
- Radan, on 03/06/2009, -0/+4Is anything allowed on the frontpage anymore? I much rather see screen shot apps than the latest lolcats on the frontpage that always goes into Diggs of triple digits. I vote for more tech related news on the frontpage!
- NOFXY, on 03/06/2009, -0/+4yeah but how would you pronounce it? G-scraught or G-scrote? I'd pick the latter just cuz it's funnier
- ptFoe, on 03/05/2009, -2/+6looks awesome
- richgustavson, on 03/06/2009, -2/+6Thought this was gonna be a Onion article.
- meninblack, on 03/06/2009, -0/+4It's was formerly named GScrot, am I right?
- Vadi0, on 03/06/2009, -0/+4Plain AWN.
- Vadi0, on 03/06/2009, -1/+4Ah... http://linuxbrit.co.uk/scrot/ ?
- leamanc, on 03/06/2009, -0/+3Depends on what you want to do screenshots for. For making technical documentation, Layers is very, very handy. It saves a lot of re-arranging your windows to get the shot you want, and gives you flexibility later on when you are putting your docs together.
- flintmecha, on 03/06/2009, -0/+3Actually, it was GScrot, but thanks for playing.
- tkoopa, on 03/06/2009, -0/+3that's better handled by desktop recording software, see http://www.linuxhaxor.net/2008/05/20/5-ways-to-scr ... (I recommend Wink)
- Vadi0, on 03/06/2009, -4/+6Never used it. Can it upload, apply effects, take screenshots of a site for you & more?
- Vadi0, on 03/05/2009, -0/+2haha, yeah. way better now
- Vadi0, on 03/06/2009, -0/+2That's an interesting idea, but I see little use of that.
- Vadi0, on 03/06/2009, -0/+2I love 'em.
- 2uantuM, on 03/06/2009, -1/+3Or your hardware sucks.
- or4n, on 03/06/2009, -2/+4Just another tool to do something you can already do with soft you already have. I just don't get why you need new tool for everything. Less programs, less bugs, less problems and so. Print scr -key works just fine and if I want more features then I just use GIMP and screenshot thingy that comes with it.
- lejovchina, on 03/06/2009, -2/+4Hmmm... Ksnapshot does pretty much all this stuff for several years.
- lambonathan, on 03/06/2009, -0/+2which dock is he using?
- inactive, on 03/06/2009, -0/+2"That's a system crash, Windows has had those for years."
- MWeather, on 03/06/2009, -0/+2I guess a liquid cooled Core i7 with 6gb Corsair Dominator RAM, a WD VelociRaptor and two gtx285s in a Gigabyte X58 mobo powered by a rock solid PC Power & Cooling power supply just can't handle Vista.
- artfuldodga, on 03/06/2009, -0/+2whats wrong with snippit tool? that along with print screen, what else does one need
- Liam, on 03/06/2009, -0/+2Import in ImageMagick has always worked for me. The biggest problem is that I frequently forget the name.
- Vadi0, on 03/06/2009, -0/+2Your idea has been noted.
Please use http://ur1.ca/26hb next time though! Might not see it here next time. - smotpoker, on 03/06/2009, -0/+2@iPoul
What did I say to indicate this program was completely original? I know there are similar programs but afaik there aren't any that have the same functionality in the FOSS world
@zenham
I am unfamiliar with this specific program or the typical gnome/kde integrated screenshot implementations and I'm not sure what you mean by "winning implementation" but I would assume the apps themselves are not resident, only the paths and arguments used to start them (plus the event-hook for monitoring printscreen).
In other words, neither it nor the default screenshot apps themselves are likely resident in memory before printscreen is pressed and it has a nearly identical memory footprint until then. It isn't until after printscreen is pressed that memory residence of the app comes into play and that isn't the only metric of efficiency.
Though I wasn't only speaking about this app, there are several capabilities this app provides that could might make it more efficient for than some alternatives for a lot of people depending on what they usually do with their screenshots or use them for. - iPoul, on 03/06/2009, -0/+2Everything is free on the internet!
- MWeather, on 03/06/2009, -2/+4"that along with print screen, what else does one need"
$100 - brettalton, on 03/06/2009, -1/+2PS: Shutter sounds like a digital photo manipulation program. May be a bit misleading to some users.
- iPoul, on 03/06/2009, -0/+1Going to suck for all those people who download this without knowing what it actual is.
