- kerryhall, on 10/10/2007, -5/+88Please, please, please give GIMP a parent window.
- QuantumAvatar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+63This is an awesome idea. I really hope they do windowing like that one day. The current way gimp work is rather annoying.
- jlebrech, on 10/10/2007, -1/+25In fullscreen mode though, if the tools are being applied the windows should stay out of the way of the brush strokes.
They should avoid the mouse cursor. - Flamekebab, on 10/10/2007, -0/+20This is unusual - it's rare that I look at these things and literally say to myself "wow". But this was one of those occasions. Nice.
- PhiKapChappy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+22I personally think that on top of these changes, a name change would go very far to cement the foothold of this product. You will constantly be fighting an uphill battle when the name of your product is "gimp"
- iFungus, on 10/10/2007, -1/+20OMG You just copied Xerox's idea of a mouse.
Shut up. - cronot, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19Too true. I really think that, because of these reasons, GIMP should be forked, the code that deals with UI and image processing separated (so changes in the UI can be made without hassle), and the name then changed for something less stupid.
- renegadeafk, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19I like. I always use fullscreen when image editing anyway. pretty cool concept. I really hope GIMP can shape up one day, for now it just can't do for me what Photoshop does. Simpler programs like Paint.NET are better for easy tasks than gimp imo also.
- scratched, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17When I saw that screenshot I really started to hope they would pick that as the winner. It is sleek and innovative. I think it's better that photoshop's interface and it looks really cool.
The GIMP team will probably never do it though. The problem is GTK. They created GTK and I don't think GTK is capable of that type of UI without major changes. The GIMP team won't abandon their own creation, and I don't see them extending the GTK framework that much.
Also, I can see that UI being very processor intensive. If the GIMP does anything well, it's efficiency. The GIMP does an amazing job at being efficient and lightweight. I think the GIMP team will try to stick to efficient interfaces.
It would be cool if they took the key elements from that UI and made it fit what the GTK is capable of though... - pinsomniac, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14Not bad, but I hope they implement numerical fields on the sliders (opacity, sharpness, etc). Being able to get a precise idea of what your settings are (rather than a rough idea of "two-thirds of the way") is handy.
- HonoredMule, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13or just disappear while edits are being done...really maximize use of screen space, without displacing tools and GUI elements.
- hockey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Couldn't agree more. If anyone complains about "people are just to sensitive" then consider that if you want to promote FOSS then making your product named something other than a potential slur (even if it's only an acronym) can go a long way to building market share.
Every little bit helps. - MisterNetHead, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13Of the few other ideas I looked at on that site, the linked one is by far the best. If the GIMP team can really swing that design, then in my opinion, it wins, hands down. Congrats to Alex Macmillan for a great idea.
- luciferin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13Well, I don't think it needs a parent window, they just need be minimize/maximize to the same taskbar button.
- kelchm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12This reminds me alot of the pixelmator interface. Very nice none the less.
http://shd.gfxdesign.cz/img/Pixelmator.jpg - byrdgang, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11That is seriously wicked. Looks even better than Photoshop.
- Chandon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Or you need to use a window manager that can actually manage windows rather than requiring every app to re-implement that functionality itself.
- webcrumb, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Agreed. Even dropping the G would help. Imp works fine.
- Craga89, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Wow, that is a great concept. I'd be really interested to see whether they can make it a reality. I especially like the drag-able effect thumbnail, very intuitive.
- Stirk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7The design looks very similar to Pixelmator for the Mac (http://pixelmator.com/)
I like it! - tcdk, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8I'll happily bitch about the crappiness of the GIMP GUI, but as long as there's no 16bit (/channel) support it doesn't really matter.
- stalefries, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7I actually filed a bug on that once, and they closed it because the name isn't "Gimp," it's "Gnu Image Manuipulation Program". Ugh.
- kris33, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6The widgets reminded me alot of the widgets from Pixelmator. Not that that's a bad thing though.
The idea of tabbed editing looks cool. - thesquirrelwood, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6sharing ideas is the whole point of open source
- Scatropolis, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7I like the flash mock up better
http://gimp-brainstorm.blogspot.com/2007/09/like-uhm-macromedia-flash-8-ui.html
though I do like the movable filter preview window - Ratatosk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6this is cool, just hope it will only have one item in the taskbar though
- Hashte, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Oh my GOD this is so awesome! That "live" filter preview literally pwns Adobe Photoshop's "loupe"!
- moonboots, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6that would be ***** sweet
- bradleyland, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9I hate the parent window MDI style. What if I want to drag in other items from a background window? What if I want other artwork open in another app for reference? There are a million possibilities that are ruled out by having an application window as a document window container.
- Angostura, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Agreed, I think the live filter preview is a splendid idea.
- deadbaby, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Looks good... very Aperture-ish.
- stevencombs, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Looks like a clone of Pixelmator (Mac OS)
- M4v3R, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5For me, more important that the UI is the functionality. And the thing I miss in Gimp is "Blending options" from Photoshop or "Live effects" as in Pixel (if I remember correctly). So if you want to test how for e.g. the drop shadow would look like you don't have to enter Script-Fu again and again.
- Samurailink3, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5God... I want this interface.. Great idea with having a community-driven brainstorming session. Its what open source is all about.
- luciferin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5If you look at the taskbar there is only one item there. So while they're not limited to the confines of a single window they just act as if they were in one. I personally think this is better, since I do all of my Gimping on a separate desktop.
- Agret, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5"If the GIMP does anything well, it's efficiency" -- Yeah, that's why it takes so long to load the Fonts... Can't they cache that or something?
"and the name then changed for something less stupid." - The name is stupid so you remember it, worked for the Wii. - Chandon, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Why would you want to jank up the GIMP with a parent window? MDI interfaces were lame in 1993 - it's not like they've gotten magically less lame in the ensuing 14 years.
- kaiwai, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I second that - that GUI is friggin awesome; I could imagine the number of low end users who will say in unison, "I don't need to purchase Photoshop Elements". GIMP is a very capable application, its just been let down because of the terrible GUI.
- gavintlgold, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4The cool thing is this is very possible with Cairo.
- armo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Can't install it at my school, even though the teacher thought it was excellent she just wasn't comfortable with the name. So that's a few hundred potential users they've lost :(
- ThreeDee912, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Looks a lot like OS X's transparent widgets.
- Agret, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Whoa that Flash clone UI looks freakin' sweet
- kaiwai, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Once they've got more users, more developers will come onboard, and thus the cycle/circle of developers increase; it is about getting mind share. With that being said, I'd love to see more Linux/UNIX distribution companies put some money into a project that'll help the uptake of UNIX/Linux on the desktop.
- Klowner, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3If you wanted it all animated and stuff sure, but it's not like Gimp can't handle layers in images, it'd seemingly be doable to implement a UI in a thing such as that.
- tiltedfish, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5To those saying "Use a better Window Manager":
Okay, somewhere along the line this became the default GIMP user response to the horrible, horrible GIMP user interface and all calls for a parent window. Let's examine this, shall we? So you want your users to switch window managers to use your program? And not only that, once they do, you want them to configure their window manager in a way that works best for your program and not for EVERY OTHER PROGRAM IN EXISTENCE.
Let's be clear. GIMP is the only major program that operates this way. No other major program works this way. And yes, there are reasons it works this way, but they're old reasons, and I for one don't think that demanding virtual desktop use for your program is reasonable. Other people have designed much, much better interfaces. In fact, every single alternative to the gimp has a better interface up to and including MS Paint. I'm sure there are those who will think I'm being extreme, but the GIMP violates every basic interface design tenent: It's absurdly inconsistent, hides all the most basic and most used functions, clings to archaic shortcuts and design principles no longer in use anywhere else, and worst of all is absurdly redundant.
And this is all ignoring that it's basically on the level of Photoshop 3 and is much slower than Photoshop. I'd honestly love it if there was a true open source counterpart to Photoshop that did even half of what Photoshop does, but the GIMP developers are reclusive nuts with no interest in their users and who have been developing their program at a snail's pace for years. A new interface would be great, but I just wouldn't expect it from these developers. They've taken a once cutting edge project and made it irrelevant. - kaiwai, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3But at the same time, Mac has multiple windows but *ONE* main menu; the current GIMP has bloody menu's everywhere - for no logical reason at all.
- donut2d, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Photoshop looks good?
- kaiwai, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3GTK+ isn't the problem; there are no limitations within the GTK+ framework, and there is nothing stopping them from creating a 'custom' widget kit which extends the GTK+ toolkit. The problem with alot of the GIMP developers, they don't want to admit that the vast majority prefer using SDI applications. They can whine about the so-called 'technical merits of MDI, but at the end of the day they have to ask themselves, do they want more users or do they want to create an application which is merely an attempt at intellectual masturbation on a grand scale?
- jkharris07, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3What a nice GUI. I really hope Gimp does a good job getting it to work.
- Agret, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Hey, it worked for the Wii.
