- JamesWilson, on 10/11/2007, -4/+26Dugg: past tense of digg,
also while we're at it, "buried" and not "dugg down" - suicidjky, on 10/11/2007, -6/+28Wouldn't these be GNU/Linux Applications? I don't see any ubuntu only programs on that list.
- thewump, on 10/11/2007, -6/+27I stand humbled.. I don't know most of these.
- KielKilla, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15Yeah, Conky rocks!
- bruenig, on 10/11/2007, -3/+18I didn't realize that ubuntu created these. They must be busy as hell maintaining such a large distro and then also having the time to code all of these apps.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15I'm the OP of the ubuntuforums thread from which this site has originated. This is not just a list of Linux applications, but a list of little-known, desktop-oriented applications in the Ubuntu repositories (or at the very least with an easy to install .deb download). The site is not designed for long time GNU/Linux gurus, but for newcomers that don't yet know what awesome applications are just one click away.
- DigitalJester, on 10/11/2007, -1/+16Sweet list. I've been looking for a linux based synth.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+18needs more cowbell
- stonyhill, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15Yeah, damn those helpful morons, trying to improve their open source knowledge and to help fellow users. Damn them to hell. Let's go back to the days when only white-tower geeks with impeccable grammar/spelling and Linux Kernel credits could post in Linux forums.
- Urusai, on 10/11/2007, -7/+20Sorry, these are Ubuntu apps.
- trogdoor, on 10/11/2007, -3/+16Not even all Linux or even *nix specific.
- Disfnord, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13Stellarium is awesome. Helped me get in A in my Astronomy class last semester.
- bruenig, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11So why is ubuntu in the title then, I was expecting to see add/remove or auto codec install, not general linux apps that ubuntu had nothing to do with. At the very least the title is misleading and more likely wildly inaccurate.
- UKsHaDoW, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10He was being sarcastic there :P
- Pssdoff, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Was it Conky that displayed little thumb sized graphs for upload/download, CPU usage, Temperature, etc. on the desktop? I've seen the app but forgot the name.
- mattmcm, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8So, how much are you being paid again...? Nothing? Oh, I see. You're just an arsehole by nature. Point taken.
- longhorn49, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8title should be "Awesome Linux Apps that you can use on Ubuntu"
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10RON PAUL uses UBUNTU. Well..... he should.... maybe he does ..... maybe someone that knows him uses Ubuntu..... maybe someone, YES that is it! Someone who uses Ubuntu who wants him to be President ! RON PAUL / UBUNTU for U.S. President 2008 !!!
- muszek, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10Nice. The list contains quite a few apps that I'll definitly try out. Some as a possible replacement for apps that I already use (that lightweight file manager) and others that do a job I didn't have a tool for (like that gui diff tool). Thanks!
- stewacide, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Deluge cannot be pimped enough. Should be the standard Gnome BT client.
- goblindegook, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Sure it isn't much use, but digging you down is a lot of fun.
- coredump0x01, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Seriously. You're missing all the latest spyware and viruses, lack of a centralized trusted software repository, cancel/allow prompts at every corner, dumbed down, un-customizable 3D interface, the inability to run the latest software on sub-par hardware, no software development tools built into the OS and no full source code access if you should ever want to learn about how things work, and best of all, Internet Explorer! Yup there's a lot you're missing out on by not using Windows.
- safiire, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Tilda is pretty cool, it gives you a drop down bash console like you'd see in 3D shooter games.
- idonthack, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4It doesn't mention it, but Yakuake is the same, just designed for KDE.
- jbhannah, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Gladly.
- Andytom, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6But that wouldn't get dugg as it implies that ubuntu is not the only Linux distro.
- thewump, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Yeah. I nearly cried when I saw that - it was the nail in the coffin for Windows for me, and marked the day I switched to Linux.
- DigitalJester, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6So was I.
- numberninechina, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4they are maybe fine , but not quite specific for ubuntu
- coredump0x01, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4It needs exclusive access to the audio device, but nevermind that. Start it with aoss, use the command:
aoss zynaddsubfx
if aoss is not installed, use the command:
sudo apt-get install alsa-oss - aaronm67, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Another cool one is called OpenTTD. If any of you used to play Transport Tycoon, OpenTTD is an open sourced version that is exactly the same in almost every way, except they have added quite a few features. http://www.openttd.com
- arjie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3locate
I love locate - neutralx, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5TheDamned wrote: "Linux apps, not only ubuntu :/"
Finally the non-Ubuntu using Linux users feel the frustration of BSD users. Also, not only are they not "ubuntu specific", they are not "linux specific" either. So both "ubuntu apps" -and- "linux apps" are erroneous. - Theli, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Since 2006 I believe. It's available under "Add/Remove".
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xara_Xtreme#Versions_for_Linux_and_Mac_OS_X - Sairgem, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Don't you know? Ubuntu is now the only Linux distro available.
- specialK16, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Seriously, what's so good about Ron Paul!?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I like Acetone, kiba dock, Sauerbraten, Deluge, devede, k3b, xmms, amarok, nmap, and err nautilus scripts! (not a program but i like them alot, its a must for me)
- majinboy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4bah, vim is sooo bloated. ed FTW!11!!
- ilobmirt, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Nonsense! He can install it while running the live cd. He'll just need a ton of ram, an internet connection, and some patience. If he installs it with the live cd, he must realize that it will no longer be there after he turns off his computer. He'll have to make the decision to really install it after trying it out. If he can't make up his ming after powering off the computer, he'd have to start all over again.
- benplaut, on 11/13/2007, -0/+2to infinity... and beyond!
- surfing, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2If I get one of those Sudo make me a sandwich shirts, will you talk to me?
- chr1831, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4since when does xara have an opensource version?
-Chris - ArthurSucks, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Best Linux Torrent app.... Ever.
- srg13, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I thinking he might be joking ;)
- jbhannah, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2MrHappy123 needs to GTFO. * Fixed.
- cabazorro, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Also try this very cool GNU console mp3 player.. lien mp3
http://sourceforge.net/projects/lienmp3/
uses ncurses and can be launched on CLI.
and what the hell is this "ubuntu" apps?
It should be Gnome or Kde but not "ubuntu" - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3How do I install jUploader? I cannot make it work... I are stupid..
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1From what I've been reading...."one click away" is a little misleading.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I like pico. Gets the job done.
