- elfprince13, on 05/09/2009, -2/+18KDE is not an OS. It's a desktop environment.
- McReynolds, on 05/09/2009, -0/+16I am still hanging onto 3.5 but it looks like it won't be long.
- rpgmakr, on 05/09/2009, -1/+13Desktop Enviroment is in the name. kDE.
- Hermmunster, on 05/09/2009, -1/+11I use it, love it. I love kde 4.2.2. But there are many things that need fixing that are related to the core piece rather than the little extra programs. That's fine if you work on the extras but the core must be your priority for fixes. Fixes must be the priority over new features. Fixing a bug can be like adding new features. If KDE 4.2.x is to succeed they need to focus on the fixes and refinements. Otherwise they are extending our wait for the desktop managers that will replace all desktop managers.
What's also real interesting is that in the screen shots they are showing the folder view rather than the desktop view. The desktop view was the sole piece that was showing that they were off base, totally. It's the major change that brought much acceptance over KDE 4.1.x. Desktop view was so bad and such a bad choice it is impossible to see how KDE 4.x would have succeeded in any form without folder view. Now if these guys could only beat up the amarok developers and put them back on track. - KAMiKAZOW, on 05/09/2009, -1/+11Yep, you are totally right. Time to kill all K's from Dolphin, Plasma, Solid, Phonon, Gwenview, Marble, System Settings, Dragon Player, Power Devil, etc.!!!!
- 44Bigs, on 05/09/2009, -0/+10Cool.. as soon as Fedora 11 is released I'm going to build myself a new Linux workstation. KDE 4 looks really nice, with the Plasma concept et al.
- KAMiKAZOW, on 05/09/2009, -0/+8Sometimes new features fix old bugs. Eg. KDE 3's Kicker became totally unmaintainable. Writing an alternative resulted in Plasma which had bugs of its own, but today works better for me than Kicker ever did.
- secrity, on 05/09/2009, -0/+8@Tony; Do you mean like Konsole, Kmousetool, Knotes, Ktimetracker, Kaddressbook, and Korganizer? Or like Excel, Outlook, and Visio?
- KAMiKAZOW, on 05/09/2009, -0/+7You mean like Firefox???
- KAMiKAZOW, on 05/09/2009, -0/+7Oh, and regarding Amarok: 1.x was kinda like Kicker. It works, but the source code grew unmaintainable. Just like Plasma Amarok 2.0 was a required rewrite, but not without issues. However, the Amarok devs are absolutely aware of Amarok 2.0's flaws. 2.1 is currently in beta and already a huge improvement. The final version will have more fixes, 2.1.x even more and they are even pretty clear which improvements to do for 2.2 and beyond: http://amarok.kde.org/wiki/2009_Sprint_Roadmap_and ...
- TWIXMIX, on 05/09/2009, -0/+6Actually the operating system is basically the piece that manages mainly the resource management of a machine and provides an interface with the hardware. So in reality, KDE isn't really part of an OS at all.
Although, generally the whole package is referred to, incorrectly, as the OS. - KAMiKAZOW, on 05/09/2009, -0/+5Um, KDE is not an OS by itself, but what you wrote, TWIXMIX, is not accurate either, because by your logic KDE is at least part of an OS. KDE offers an interface to hardware through Solid. It offers power management through PowerDevil, etc. The same is true for other modern DE's.
- hazello, on 05/10/2009, -0/+3In KDE 4. There was a tool to change it in KDE 4.0/4.1 that apparently doesn't work in 4.2, and for some unknown reason this capability does not seem to be built in or accessible through themes as it was in all previous KDE releases.
- hazello, on 05/10/2009, -0/+3I used to switch between KDE, Gnome and Window Maker, and finally settled on KDE when KDE 3 came out. I was really comfortable with 3.5 and after testing 4 on my laptop, was in no hurry to switch my main system! The changes were to drastic and I don't like some of them.
I did end up upgrading my system to KDE 4.2 last week, and I wasn't happy with some things about it, but I think it will pan out in the long run. I spend most of my time using Kmail and Kate, and I like some of the changes to each, but dislike other changes. I finally got used to it (having figured out what I needed to tweak to be comfortable again, like any time you install a new OS (I know KDE isn't an OS - obviously - I just mean, when you install a fresh whatever and have to configure it as you please)). I'm happy I upgraded... sort of. Actually, I'm using Gnome right now!
Also, so... anybody know when we'll be able to change the color of the panel??? The black transparency is driving me nuts. - thecheatah, on 05/09/2009, -3/+5I had a dream that they fixed the KDE desktop widget for compiz... WTF kind of a dream is that?
Then I had a dream of why I answered a question wrong on the final...:-(... - hazello, on 05/10/2009, -1/+3kool story, bro
- elfprince13, on 05/11/2009, -0/+2bratterscain: No, I wouldn't ;) there are plenty of shells you can use for Windows that aren't explorer.
- MicrosoftBob, on 05/10/2009, -0/+2In Gnome or KDE?
- inactive, on 05/09/2009, -1/+2elfprince13, the king of knowledge take a moment from his busy day to answer a sarcastic comment.
- TetchyTony, on 05/09/2009, -3/+3No, time to give things names that give you a hint of what they're for. Giving things stupid names doesn't add credibility or widen adoption.
- bratterscain, on 05/09/2009, -3/+3KDE is part of an OS. Would you say Vista was updated if Explorer was? It's all a collaborative unit if you want to get technical about it.
- TrnsltLife, on 05/09/2009, -7/+6I really hate the convention of naming everything associated with KDE with a K, everything related to Java with a J, and so on. It sucks.
- bratterscain, on 05/09/2009, -7/+7Wow. I'm loving me some updated OS's.
- inactive, on 05/09/2009, -5/+3Indeed. A "K" in the name looks and sound bad. I'll let you in on a little secret. There's even more to it than that. Good names (that aren't stupid as *****, obscure, or gay sounding) are just one feature to making a program that is easy to use and comfortable for the USERS. But Linux is an OS primarily designed and geared toward programmers, some who have an ass backward sense of style and taste. They don't really consider how anyone else feels about the program. It's not a product, it's not for sale, so there is absolutely no reason to do anything to please a group of people outside themselves.
- gumballer, on 05/09/2009, -10/+2Kool
- Hermmunster, on 05/09/2009, -13/+4You mean desktop manager.
- inactive, on 05/09/2009, -10/+1Don't get your hopes up. It's still slow as hell and about as cumbersome as having sex with a fat women covered in Elmer's Glue.
