- shanesemler, on 10/05/2008, -5/+29Cool and it's not another ***** Tux Racer best games on Linux list!
- GlitchEnzo, on 10/06/2008, -6/+29Linux : lowering the expectations of gamers since '91.
Seriously though, I do support independent developers and games, but if this was Windows only, it would be considered sub-par and would never be on the front page of digg. Slap Linux on it though and you'll have all sorts of geeks drooling over it and praising it. - Sokkratez, on 10/06/2008, -0/+17But it has polygons.
- mattus, on 10/05/2008, -13/+30Woo! Another dated-looking platform game that doesn't seem to have anything new to offer. In spite of this, we're all supposed to marvel at it purely because it's a game and it's on Linux.
Linux is a great OS for many tasks, but you have to admit that gaming is not one of them. Buried. - ADHD, on 10/05/2008, -7/+16is this really...news...
ok a game on linux, yay...? - DontThinkSo, on 10/05/2008, -3/+11This actually looks pretty interesting, as long as it has good scripting capabilities - can I opt for an 'Advanced Mode' where a simple python (or whatever) script get triggered when I land on a platform?
- okaysamurai, on 10/06/2008, -0/+7Not yet, but a great suggestion we'll look into. Robert Scoble asked the same thing at TechCrunch 50 last month. Thanks for your feedback.
- smurf22, on 10/06/2008, -1/+8You are all missing the point. This game was created for ALL platforms with easy because of open GL.
- RoboDonut, on 10/05/2008, -0/+7Because it's beta.
- scabbers, on 10/05/2008, -16/+23Looks like ass.
- okaysamurai, on 10/06/2008, -1/+8Thanks for the review and support. Yes, Atmosphir is currently in Beta, and still has plenty of polishing and optimization left to do before a public release by the end of the year - we've been getting some great feedback. While this article is focused on the Linux version, it should be noted that it works on Mac and PC as well. And it's free.
- Gutterpunk, on 10/06/2008, -0/+6A game that offers an original way to implement and play user submitted content, with an easy to use 3D editor that even your granny could use.
Go commercial, don't support Linux at all, call it Spore and generate the biggest buzz for a video game ever.
Go freeware, support Linux, call it Atmosphir... get stoned on Digg by the same nerds who sold their soul to Spore (before playing it)
And then they wonder why no publishers gives a ***** about Linux. - Soldierboi, on 10/06/2008, -4/+10While I applaud the developers for making another free, open source game for Linux........I gotta say...our offerings are ***** embarrassing to the gaming world as a whole.
- xptweakerntn, on 10/06/2008, -0/+6That actually makes quite a bit of sense.
- Octanus, on 10/05/2008, -0/+5Congrats, I'm glad you shared that with us.
- skoruppa, on 10/06/2008, -0/+5hmm ET:QW, UT:2004, Cold War, Penumbra, X3 Reunion... :>
- TaylorHelferty, on 10/05/2008, -2/+6Looks awesome. Signed up for the beta, now I just hope Intrepid -fully- supports my ATI video card.
- RoboDonut, on 10/05/2008, -5/+9EVERY game has "content creation tools"
After all, the developers had to create all that content somehow. - ewang, on 10/06/2008, -0/+4Wonder if this could be ported to Android, since that has a Linux base? Having this on your handset would work pretty well with the simplified graphics. Could even mod the controls to use the accelerometer...
- dgtljunglist, on 10/05/2008, -3/+7This is more like a game that *happens* to run on Linux.
It actually looks like it could be fun though. - DeathGod321, on 10/05/2008, -3/+7*****, mario on my TI-83+ has "content creation tools." It's still no comparison to a decent game.
- bitterbug, on 10/06/2008, -2/+6Why are people digging me down for stating simple truths.
This isn't the Unreal Engine, it's a nice simple cross-platform platform game, with a nice editor. And by being cross-platform and FREE it's accessible to kids anywhere.
I've got a pretty unique perspective on this: I worked on two Unreal titles, and one of my roommates currently develops a free game engine for kids to get started at game design in. So seeing people like him and the Atmosphir team create things that are fun and accessible is great.
Does it need to look like Call of Duty? No.
Can a young kid hop into design with UEd3? Not easily. It's considerably more complicated than earlier versions.
I guess people are jumping down it's throat because the one sentence summary mentions Linux. Funny how operating system activism is stronger on here than political convictions. - mattus, on 10/06/2008, -2/+5What is inaccurate about my comment? At some point, most gamers want to play games with big names, big followings and big budgets. Can you play COD4, Bioshock, Half-Life, Counter-Strike or Crysis on Linux? Can you even play The Sims? No! If you think that being able to play obscure platformers makes Linux a great gaming OS, you need to take a reality check and/or play some popular games.
This isn't Linux-hating or fanboyism. It's about using the right tool for the job. - VinnieDaMac, on 10/06/2008, -1/+4***** Crysis, I want this game.
- DreadKnight, on 10/06/2008, -0/+3TeeWars sucka!
- vagarach, on 10/05/2008, -1/+4More people should use SDL, cross platform, works on lots of languages, and is easy to use too!
- cheeseplease, on 10/06/2008, -1/+3It's not meant to be Half-Life 3, it's a free game for kids with an easy-to-use level editor. Sub-par compared to what?
We see this pass on digg because the developers do this for fun, wihout wanting to invest a lot of money and need a way to make their work be seen by the public. It's free software and if it's not the kind of thing you are looking for, just let it pass. - bitterbug, on 10/06/2008, -9/+11I don't care what platform it's on, this is definitely not sub-par. The level editor looks extremely intuitive, the graphics are attractive and it appears to run smoothly.
This is an excellent entry level tool for kids who want to get into game and level design. - xptweakerntn, on 10/05/2008, -2/+4Of all the "Linux games lists", why haven't we ever seen this one?
- DontThinkSo, on 10/06/2008, -0/+2You guys seem to have missed the "easily" in my post - sure, I *could* create custom maps for Diablo II or Mario, but that doesn't mean it's *easy*.
Reading comprehension ftw? - cheeseplease, on 10/06/2008, -0/+2warsow
- sykotik, on 10/06/2008, -0/+2That's incredibly silly. I posit right here, right now, that anyone who says, brings up, or otherwise mentions a game, but only makes comments about the graphics, have no clue about gaming. They are, in fact, not hardcore gamers, but simply young'uns spoiled by bump mapping and bloom lighting, and wouldn't know a good game if it came and beat them in the face without end.
- inactive, on 10/06/2008, -0/+2Finally my 5 year old son can stop bitching about the lack of games on Linux. But seriously Linux would be a great gaming platform. I always wanted to create a linux livecd based on a game. Just put the cd in boot from it and it goes straight into the game like a console. Of course my dream would be an openconsole running linux.
- arandomgeek, on 02/24/2009, -0/+2Well in that case, wanna have sex?
- cfuse, on 10/06/2008, -10/+12Why don't we start reviewing games for the Atari Jaguar? Nobody is going to be playing them either.
- scabbers, on 10/06/2008, -0/+2Looks don't matter up to a point... but just look at it!
- Fabbyfubz, on 10/06/2008, -0/+2Haven't you heard
- cheeseplease, on 10/06/2008, -0/+1I love linux but goddamnit do I hate Tux.
- cheeseplease, on 10/06/2008, -0/+1Linux isn't the best for gaming indeed, but for non-hardcore gamers it suffices perfectly.
- DontThinkSo, on 10/05/2008, -9/+10It's more than just a random platform game; it has content creation tools which seem to be all the rage right now. You're right; if this were just a random platform game I probably wouldn't give it much thought, but since I can easily customize and create my own adventures, this may actually be something worth checking out.
- melat0nin, on 10/06/2008, -0/+1Remember Narbacular Drop, the thing that became Portal?
- oobuntu, on 10/06/2008, -0/+1anyone tried this on a eee pc ?
- consonance, on 10/06/2008, -2/+3Graphics can be updated, and--lo and behold--this game is in beta! What matters is the core concept, which is not half bad. Once the main idea is achieved, THEN all the frills on top like graphics can be taken care of.
This kind of reminds me of the beta for the original Guild Wars, released a while ago. As an MMORPG, a central component of the game is abilities. In the beta, abilities were found in orbs dropped by enemies. Each orb contained a specific spell, unlocked by an NPC. It was a nightmare to get the one ability you wanted. But that was the beta. Today abilities are gained completely differently, and the game is fun. And if a major gameplay mechanic can change in a beta, so can the graphics. - cryonix, on 10/06/2008, -2/+3True, but since when does that matter?
I thought we were beyond looks by now, I mean seriously if there are people purely basing the quality of a game on its graphics, then Mr."BeerLuver" above is correct in his statement. - HonoredMule, on 10/06/2008, -1/+2I use it for servers, I swear!
- Twinnie, on 10/06/2008, -5/+5I think it was the "Linux is a great OS for many tasks" part. "Linux is pretty good for servers and basement dwelling virgins" would have been more appropriate.
- Clbull, on 10/05/2008, -9/+9wow, one of the few Linux games I seen that actually looks quite good.
- Baskins, on 10/06/2008, -1/+1It looks way too focused around "perfect jumping" and will just frustrate the hell out of me.
But visually tolerable. - digerati1338, on 10/06/2008, -1/+1Sounds like Chips Challenge 3D. Kool.
- POPULATIONPASTE, on 10/06/2008, -2/+1It's so nice to see the quality of Linux gaming finally reach that of Nintendo 64.
