- veskris, on 05/17/2008, -5/+189I'm more excited by the troubleshooting options this would open. I don't know how many times my windows installation has become inaccessible and all I needed was to just check the internet real quick for a solution.
- Stormlor, on 05/17/2008, -9/+161Wonderful news. More Linux is needed
- EmitStop, on 05/17/2008, -1/+143http://www.splashtop.com/index.php
A video demonstrating how it works. I like the idea, sounds interesting. - blackjack75, on 05/17/2008, -1/+92I assume it just has a small linux OS in a flash memory somewhere on the MB. Would be perfect if this is update-able / hackable.
- hexydes, on 05/17/2008, -1/+85Congrats Asus on just introducing the technology that will secure contracts with every major systems manufacturer for the next 2-3 years, starting in six months. I think this will catch on like wildfire as soon as one of the big manufacturers includes it.
- bhavinp, on 05/17/2008, -15/+82In other words, ***** you Microsoft.
Sincerely,
ASUS - dualboy24, on 05/17/2008, -3/+55I think that the idea of a instant on Desktop is great, but what the motherboard manufactures really need to do is embed say 2GB of flash on the boards and make it a fully loaded series of applications. Heck partition the storage with say a 100mb section in FAT for windows drivers. The cost of a 2GB USB stick is about $8-12 these days, and thats a full external storage stick, to buy just the mem chips is probably $4-$8 which is not much for the cost of a motherboard.
- rhustang, on 05/17/2008, -0/+46definitely a nice product. but they really need to hire a voice over guy for that video.
- gjscds, on 05/17/2008, -2/+45This is freakin' genius. If they could put this on the EEE PC, that would become the killer product. Instant-on Skype? Yes, please...
- mark076h, on 05/17/2008, -6/+48i prefer to see a duplicate tech story than some Obama story
- hexydes, on 05/17/2008, -3/+44Definitely dugg. It's stupid it has taken this long for this to happen...
- arpnuke, on 05/17/2008, -1/+40Sounds really cool. Also, I like the idea of being able to still get online even if my main OS is completely buggered.
- mithrasinvictus, on 05/17/2008, -5/+37Download and burn a live-cd image. You'll thank yourself next time.
- fredmv, on 05/18/2008, -0/+29 This is a great move by ASUS. Linux is EVERYWHERE. It's completely hilarious how many people mindlessly spew out things like "Linux sucks!" when they fail to realize that _they're using it_. Embedded systems, mobile devices, etc. Linux is here to stay.
- bumcheekcity, on 05/17/2008, -7/+32http://digg.com/linux_unix/Splashtop_Linux_desktop ...
Last week called, etc.
All in all, this is a good idea, but it's pretty useless to most people as it is now (most, not all). If the OS could access files on the hard drive, it would become literally the best thing ever, but it can't (as I understand). If it's hacked or updated to allow hard drive access, I'm buying one instantly :D - KloroFormd, on 05/17/2008, -0/+24Yes, I'll be damned if they give me more features that could save precious minutes of my life booting an OS just to check something before I head off to work!
- plingboot, on 05/17/2008, -3/+24embedded windows?
- damndj, on 05/17/2008, -4/+25Now the Internet is instant!
- gannondork, on 05/17/2008, -16/+34What will M$ do to stop this?
- aydoubleyou, on 05/17/2008, -2/+18This is awesome. Ill be picking one up soon for my next build to try it out. Bravo ASUS!
- inactive, on 05/17/2008, -5/+21Probably committing the unforgivable sin of turning it on. Windows hates that!
- troye, on 05/17/2008, -0/+16Splashtop is a Linux based product.
- Herolint, on 05/18/2008, -0/+15I wonder how long it will be before Asus announces that all their motherboards will come with an instant-on version of Windows PE.
- liuite, on 05/17/2008, -0/+14awesome! your windows might crash and leave you w/o internet...this solves that problem and also makes the bios more hackable. now your pc will work even without a hard drive or flash drive
- asskey, on 05/17/2008, -7/+21Linux is free software...
- diulei, on 05/17/2008, -2/+16Well, my computers don't take "3 minutes" to boot, but this is a great idea. Sometimes I just need to grab something from my Gmail or check the weather.
(Also this voiceover guy has an annoying voice...) - juicebag, on 05/17/2008, -2/+15This is a really cool idea.
- bjornski, on 05/17/2008, -0/+13Well, to be fair, 16 year ago the OS was much, much smaller.
- error2k2, on 05/17/2008, -1/+14Maybe the hard drive has bad sectors?
Corrupt boot.ini?
Bad RAM, person doesn't know about Memtest86 until he/she can google about it?
Boot sector of disk is damaged or has a virus?
Damn, I'm sure there are other stuff I haven't encountered yet but will show up one day. Luckily I'll have a working web browser handy. - DeathMarcher, on 05/17/2008, -2/+14Maybe it was only once.. he doesn't know.
- lamiaconfitor, on 05/18/2008, -0/+12Asus rocks! they probably wouldn't have had to do this in order to secure contracts, but it certainly does not hurt.
- lamiaconfitor, on 05/18/2008, -1/+13change your browsers settings.
- bjornski, on 05/17/2008, -0/+13Gee. Maybe don't buy one?
- jleems86, on 05/17/2008, -4/+16Can;t do the HDD access thing, that'd require knowing the filesystem, supplying power to the HDD, spending time letting the disks spin up and long latency when reading them, etc. the whole idea of the splashtop is that the ONLY parts of the computer that are on are the motherboard, ram, and cpu and that's it. it's meant as a low power mode. if you want HDD access, just boot your main OS
- Oea420, on 05/18/2008, -0/+12I wonder what's on youtube...
- inactive, on 05/18/2008, -1/+12That's not even possible. XP can't even run off of a damn USB stick, there's no way in hell they could adapt the whole OS that quickly; well, they may be able to, but it would be one hell of a buggy OS.
- plingboot, on 05/17/2008, -0/+11in fact, the A440 OS was stored entirely on 2 256K ROMS. It would be instant on. Impossible to compare that with today's PCs.
- Oea420, on 05/18/2008, -0/+11This would be really cool if, while you were in the 'splashtop' environment, your OS boots on the side... alerting you when it's ready... that would make it truly useful..
As I see it now, it's cool for quick look ups, or that occasional 'i need to check google to fix my computer' (ie, get a windows XP key! pirate!).. but other than that.. all that time you waste mucking around in that silly thing and you still have to boot your OS after you are done.l - Wakuko, on 05/18/2008, -2/+13Send a Lamborghini Murcielago to every Asus fat cat and "convince" them to drop this idea in favor of windows.
- lacreme, on 05/17/2008, -9/+20this is great for porn if it doesn't save information
- zombies187, on 05/18/2008, -0/+11The EEEs solid state hard drive is soldered to an asus motherboard running an instant on Linux. How would this be different? I hope its the same because I love my EEE.
- TheWindBlows, on 05/18/2008, -0/+10Make an embedded windows that has a splash screen that takes 30 seconds to go away as it plays a song from the 80's along with a $20 licensing fee for it.
- troye, on 05/18/2008, -3/+13I mean the extra hardware needed to run splashtop, extra hardware like more mobo rom space and extra circuitry and chips.
- blankhorizons, on 05/18/2008, -0/+9Don't reply if you don't understand the OP
- mCanada, on 05/17/2008, -9/+18Obligatory old school Amiga troll. What's old is new again. I remember how Amiga OS could boot within seconds (unless you bogged it down), but conversely your upgrade path was limited to the chip on the mobo. I feel Linux has a kinship in many ways to Amiga...
- hexydes, on 05/17/2008, -0/+9What are you using, an old RCA tube TV circa 1947? The main reason I always leave my computers on is because no matter what the OS, it always takes a MINIMUM of 30 seconds to become productive (and depending on other variables, sometimes as long as a minute or two).
This is exactly what I need. - Biznarie, on 05/18/2008, -0/+8Having a partitioning tool and other utilities like that would be really impressive and much more useful.
- DestroyFascism, on 05/18/2008, -1/+8Great! The DOS based systems currently used are pathetic. It would be nice to have a Linux based board running Linux.
- adolfojp, on 05/18/2008, -0/+7You were expecting to see a video about a kernel?
