- MikeCerm, on 12/05/2007, -1/+30If they can manage to sell most of those with Linux installed, 2009 might actually be the year we see Linux surpass Apple's marketshare. Personally, I'm just waiting for one with a screen with a minimum of 600 vertical pixels.
- pcpimpster, on 12/05/2007, -2/+22Yeah, "Apple" and "cheap" is not something you should include in the same sentence.
- Philluminati, on 12/05/2007, -1/+192008 to be "year of the Linux desktop".
Asus's words - not mine! - 35263526, on 12/05/2007, -1/+17Yes, for $100 more you get a heavy, big laptop.
I really wish you retards would understand that the Eee-lovers aren't drooling over the 900MHz Celeron or the 512 MB of RAM; we're drooling over the fact that it's an incredibly light, ultraportable laptop for under $500. - ripstuntz, on 12/05/2007, -2/+17I'll tell u what, i would not be the least bit suprised if they shipped even more. Purely based off of the looks, comments, and comlpliments on I get on mine.
In fact, my aunt ordered 2 for her daughters for x-mas and my mother is ordering one for my sister as well. I cannot believe the overwhelming compliments I get on this tiny little sucker! - ZeBadger, on 12/05/2007, -0/+12Well.... I got one and it's great (except the battery life) I'm using it to write this post :P
The vanilla install is good enough for me... no need for XP - tange1, on 12/05/2007, -0/+12Your right, for 100 you could get a full sized laptop. What your paying the premium for is for the size of the unit and decent battery life for a such a small laptop. The big selling point is that the EEEPC's premium is a smaller $ amount than most other ultra portables.
- OrangeTide, on 12/05/2007, -1/+13Steve Jobs hates cheap things.
- OrangeTide, on 12/05/2007, -0/+10Compared to other sub 12" laptops it's like a quarter of the price.
- FlyCO, on 12/05/2007, -1/+9"because Linux is 10 years behind Windows and Mac OS X."
it's more likely the other way around - inactive, on 12/05/2007, -0/+8dugg up for dropping a laptop down an elevator shaft.
FIX THAT GEEK SQUAD! - inactive, on 12/05/2007, -0/+8fail to see how it is overhyped... you can't argue with the data. they're selling like hotcakes. that's like saying coca-cola is overhyped.
- ta10n, on 12/05/2007, -0/+7Care to explain why your opinion means more than everybody else's?
- fishfishfish, on 12/05/2007, -1/+8I'd like one of these, but it's the low resolution display that's stopping me from purchasing one just yet. If the viewable part of the screen filled the whole of the available area and the resolution went up to a more usable 1024x768 I'd buy one in an instant. Hopefully, the next models will address this.
- localzuk, on 12/05/2007, -0/+7Exactly - a 10.1" stylistic tablet pc costs roughly £1300 minimum. Go for a laptop form and you may be able to drop that to £1000, but thats all. That is hugely expensive!
- OrangeTide, on 12/05/2007, -1/+8"Oh *****, what do the little arms on the LCD do? So snazzy."
They steal your soul. - chedabob, on 12/05/2007, -1/+8With a 1.0 on the Vista performance scale, it'll be about as fun as shoving bamboo rods up your fingertips.
- stmiller, on 12/05/2007, -1/+7Block.
- latova, on 12/05/2007, -0/+5The second they put in that 10" screen, I'm going to get one.
- PRlME, on 12/05/2007, -1/+6I was looking over the Specs. I would dual boot this thing. Looks perfect to trouble shoot networks on the go or on a construction site. And cheep enuff that if you drop it downa elevator shaft like i did to my HP dv1000 i wont stress to get a new one.
- NoSalt, on 12/05/2007, -1/+6WANT!!!
- MikeCerm, on 12/05/2007, -0/+5With Linux or XP, the performance will be OK for what it's designed for - a little web browsing, checking e-mail, talking on Skype, and blogging about how cool you Eee PC is. If you're doing anything other than that, the screen size and storage space will probably be more of a drag than the speed and memory. If you want a boost, you could double the RAM, but it's not really necessary, since you won't be able to do too much multitasking on it.
You'll be able to play DVD-quality video on it, but it certainly won't be powerful enough to do anything with high-def video, which doesn't matter because it doesn't have the storage or the screen-resolution for it anyway. - neko, on 12/06/2007, -0/+4I've just noticed... it doesn't have a Microsoft Windows logo on the Super key!
I might get it just for that =D - niallabrown, on 12/05/2007, -0/+4A crippled version of XP somehow doesn't sound that appealing. I hope if they become very succesful they will provide an option of something like a regular Ubuntu install, instead of just the modified Xandros.
- lexbaby, on 12/05/2007, -0/+4Wii was taken too.
- PRlME, on 12/05/2007, -1/+5this thing needs a bigger screen
- alexforcefive, on 12/05/2007, -1/+4I wish Lost was still good :(
- Zippo, on 12/05/2007, -0/+3Dual-boot? On an 4 or 8GB harddrive?
- OrangeTide, on 12/05/2007, -1/+4I like mine. The Linux on it is really easy to use. Some of the waitresses at the local bar hopped right on it and figure out how to get into Skype(I didn't even set it up yet!) and everything. A screen that actually fills up the area that it is mounted in, and Asus will have a hit on their hands.
For people that want to use MSN, Skype and Firefox. I'm not sure if you need Windows XP/Vista.
ps - I noticed adding debian stable to /etc/apt/sources.list seems to just work when you want access to a broader range of packages like gcc, svn, git-core, make. - williamdyer, on 12/05/2007, -1/+4Don't worry. It's nothing you would understand. Ignore it.
- darthchaosrspw, on 12/05/2007, -0/+3And you've just been buried right back for being a douche.
- TomFrost, on 12/05/2007, -3/+6I never really understood the Linux vs. Mac mentality. I have a powerhouse Linux desktop at home, and you can't pry my mac laptop out of my cold dead fingers. I enjoy both platforms immensely for what I do, and since I'm the "computer guy" for family and friends, I'm happy as long as people aren't on Windows. Whichever they pick is fine with me, because either one makes my life a hell of a lot easier. Shooting off an E-mail with a tip on how to install a program or what to use in place of a certain Windows application is endlessly easier than the constant slurry of spyware/adware/registry cleanup I normally get.
So I think it's time to quit talking about these two like they're competing. BOTH of them are a step in the right direction. - xtragedy, on 12/06/2007, -0/+3Well if they give people something cheap that does what it is supposed to do, then people will go for it, its that easy. Cheap computers is not new, but before they all came with Windows and sadly Windows can't handle lower end hardware. Microsoft is loosing grip on the hardware vendors and it shows.
- darthchaosrspw, on 12/05/2007, -1/+4I can never understand all this "fanboy" stuff. It really is annoying. The Windows fanboys, the Mac fanboys, and the Linux fanboys need to get a life. Life does not revolve around an operating system. Like I've said before, I want an OS that "just works". I don't need any a/v pizzazz. All I need is a web browser, some games, an email client, a chat client, a photo editor, a video player, and a music player. I can get all of that on Windows, Mac OS X (I have a Hackintosh), and even Ubuntu.
- MikeCerm, on 12/05/2007, -0/+3Just to save the hassle of installing Windows, you should probably stay with the vanilla install, unless there's something that you need Windows for. Especially if you're open-minded enough to try to get along with Linux. If you absolutely must run Office, that would be one reason that you'd want to go through the process of installing XP. If you have some other Windows app that are dependent on, for which there is no direct Linux substitute, then you'll be wanting Windows.
Some people just have no interest in changing their habits to adapt to the Linux lifestyle. There are plenty of legitimate reasons that people will want/need to run Windows, and the Eee PC won't be offended. - williamdyer, on 12/05/2007, -1/+4The Ooo! brand was already taken.
- warriorscot, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2If you can solder you can add in more memory up to 64GB if you have the cash to spend.
- rtfx, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2Surely this still wouldn't count as the year of the "Linux desktop." It's a laptop!
Not that the distinction is that great, given that laptops are more popular now. - chedabob, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2I wasn't really expecting to be doing anything like play Crysis, I just wondered whether XP was usable on it, or whether I would be better staying with the vanilla install.
- inactive, on 12/06/2007, -0/+24 issues I have with it... the price... too much and you receive too little, which brings up issue #2 and #3... needs more storage space, 8G is barely a starting point, 32G would be fine. And the screen could be bigger... there is room so why not make use of it, bigger screen but still be a very small laptop. My guess is that newer versions down the road will address #2 and #3.
#4, and the real reason I won't buy one... if I want to upgrade the ram myself, I void the warranty? And yet it uses Linux? Ironic. - warriorscot, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2Thing about the resolutions is when you look at laptops it isn't the res total its the resolution/screen size, low res on a small screen is still just as good as the bigger higher res monitors because when you work out the ratios there isnt always much difference and when you consider the screen size if you make it anything displayed on it to small its not great to use. I would rather a larger screen maybe an OLED on that takes up the whole screen space, I was thinking of getting a new PDA or eBook but one of these with a bigger screen might do the job.
- tripzero, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2Most people never and will never install their own OS. Sorry to shoot down your theory but that's how the wold is.
- tripzero, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2Nobody will ever need any more than 64k RAM too!
- daverave999, on 12/06/2007, -0/+2We ain't seen something like the Eee turn up before though, have we...
- inactive, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2 I'd like one with a larger screen as well...Since i already use Linux,I'm comfortable with it.
- csopelario, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1I know... They will have an Age.
- Boshow, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1Probably because they are buying Gateway this year.
- faithfreedom, on 12/09/2007, -0/+1I think you mean "Linux laptop"
- baaj, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1I lived in China for almost 10 years. It happens daily there. People don't install the OS - the vendors do it for them after they purchase the unit. Simple, quick & free.
- Philluminati, on 12/07/2007, -0/+1All they need is a word processor "on your iPhone" and your done aren't you?
