Asus Says Eee PC is Most Successful Product Ever
linuxloop.com — The Eee PCs huge sales numbers are well known by now, but Asus just announced that the Eee PC is their most successful product ever! That's huge news from such a large company!

- niallabrown, on 01/08/2008, -0/+50Wow that is a big statement. I would love to get one myself actually.
- smacksaw, on 01/08/2008, -0/+11Me too...April can't come soon enough for me (when the new models sans-moving parts come out)
- dgblackout, on 01/08/2008, -1/+27as soon as there's a 10" version, i'm all over it.
- smacksaw, on 01/08/2008, -1/+8You mean the Eeee PC?
- Tinendo, on 01/08/2008, -3/+7Yes, he means the eeepc. Thers a 10" Screen Version coming ... soon.
- qwertydvorak, on 01/08/2008, -2/+14does anyone know if the 10" screen is 1024x768 ? that is the lowest resolution screen i consider usable nowadays. it would be attractive to me at that resolution even with the size screen it currently has.
- akilleen, on 01/08/2008, -3/+8Since it is widescreen, my guess it that it would be 1024x800.
- selrahc, on 01/08/2008, -0/+5You mean 1280x800 or 1024x640 right?
- Tinendo, on 01/08/2008, -3/+7Yes, he means the eeepc. Thers a 10" Screen Version coming ... soon.
- kazamx, on 01/08/2008, -0/+9I'm a little worried about how they were highlighting that the new version will come with windows XP installed. While I understand that some consumers will demand XP, I really hope they don't start hiding the Linux option in a corner and plastering their site with Windows approved ads.
- niallabrown, on 01/09/2008, -0/+1Photos were just passing around of the 10" version. I think its close than we think.
- smacksaw, on 01/08/2008, -1/+8You mean the Eeee PC?
- Roger, on 01/08/2008, -2/+19I'd get one if it wasn't for the thick border around the screen that makes it look like a toy.
- kazamx, on 01/08/2008, -0/+4That will be gone in the next version, as that space will be used for the bigger screen. It seems they decided to make the V1 like that so upgrading the screen for V2 would be really easy.
- Roger, on 01/08/2008, -0/+2{{fact}} ?
- Elranzer, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1Hopefully the V2 will have user-replaceable Flash memory.
- OptimismPrime, on 01/09/2008, -1/+1I think there are 2 main reasons for the thick border.
1.) being ergonomical reasons - if you make the damn thing just as wide as the TFT pannel the keyboard becomes just too small to do any kind of halfway comfortable typing.
2.) as stated above by kazamx: hardware reasons - you can only make motherboards so small and if you plan on releasing different screensize models it makes more economic sense to basicaly use the same base unit and make the border thicker with small panels and only make it thin on the big panels it was designed for. - penno, on 01/09/2008, -1/+1that makes sense. Because it looks like a toy it obviously can't be used.
- kazamx, on 01/08/2008, -0/+4That will be gone in the next version, as that space will be used for the bigger screen. It seems they decided to make the V1 like that so upgrading the screen for V2 would be really easy.
- schestowitz, on 01/08/2008, -16/+5The Engadget URL is broken (mistake in markup). I went to http://www.engadget.com/ but couldn't find that reference..
If that's as good as it sounds, then it's very encouraging.- seoulkul, on 01/08/2008, -2/+0http://tinyurl.com/ysygg5
"2.15PM - Ah, the good stuff -- EeePC. Claims to be the company's most successful product ever. Obviously, then, a WiMax-enabled EeePC is going to be a big deal for ASUS."

- Philluminati, on 01/08/2008, -4/+8There are good laptops there is no denying that. Whilst the specs are low, the price reflects that. It's a simple case of having a product is in unambiguous in what it's for and why you'd use it. There's no worrying sales drive or false claims, it's just a small machine thats cheap. I want to get one but I have an overdraft to pay off.
- bobbob1016, on 01/08/2008, -9/+13Must.... fight.... grammar correcting impulse......
There - (A location) - Go over there. - "there is no denying that" is correct too, not sure what to classify that as though.
They're - (They are) - They're good laptops.
Their - (Belonging to them) - That laptop is theirs.
Sorry, I had to, I feel better now.- richbleak, on 01/08/2008, -0/+5Are you denying that "there are good laptops"? Somewhere out there, there are good laptops. Rather than correct this person on his bad grammar, I prefer to believe that his initial statement had no relation to this product and was simply a blanket statement about the state of the laptop industry. It makes me feel better about the world. Unfortunately, I must still fault him for no punctuation.
- Philluminati, on 01/08/2008, -0/+2I know the correct use of There, Their, They're but I was going to write something else. Then change it but didn't re-read it properly.
- richbleak, on 01/08/2008, -1/+3Just giving you a hard time Phil, no worries. It happens to the best of us (not me, but I would imagine other people above the 90th percentile).
- bobbob1016, on 01/10/2008, -0/+1If you read the first sentence alone, yes you could be right richbleak. However "Whilst the specs are low, the price reflects that." shows it was directed towards the eeePC, since he is talking about the specs on this laptop being low, and the prices on this laptop being low because of that.
@Phil, I figured that you knew the difference since you used "There's" correctly, I just had to say it, no offense intended.
- richbleak, on 01/08/2008, -0/+5Are you denying that "there are good laptops"? Somewhere out there, there are good laptops. - ours, on 01/08/2008, -0/+7I'm tired of those UMPCs that cost an arm and a leg. Sure, sliding keyboards and touch screens are cool but costing more then the average laptop just didn't cut it for me.
The EEE PC has just the right bang for the buck. The price hit the line where I'm getting one and I'll figure what I'll need it for later.- silencerar, on 01/08/2008, -2/+3"...but costing more THAN the average..." !!!!!!

- archiethefifth, on 01/08/2008, -4/+32Perhaps they should try advertising it more.
- Scyth3, on 01/08/2008, -0/+6Speaking of which, I saw a TV ad for it and a segment on the news the other day.

- warriorscot, on 01/08/2008, -0/+2Why bother it apparently sells itself and as long as the numbers are good they want to make sure supply keeps up with demand.

- longchamp, on 01/08/2008, -19/+7These things are $350... For $400 i bought a Core 2 Duo compaq with 80GB and 1GB of RAM and a DVD burner. Does the price of the Asus really reflect its worth?
- chingy1788, on 01/08/2008, -1/+20its like 1/4 the size of your laptop
so you can like carry it around easier - oldhick, on 01/08/2008, -0/+20I think you have to understand the product and the market. Most of us who are interested in the product don't have a need for the hardware you're talking about. We need a portable, functional product that can be used anytime anywhere. We won't be burning Xvid movies to DVD and we won't be playing Crysis on it.
- AaronS2000, on 01/08/2008, -3/+14compaq... enough said.

- starkruzr, on 01/08/2008, -0/+7Only if you don't like carrying around giant bricks of ABS plastic.
- YourTechSupport, on 01/08/2008, -5/+1Actually. They've made progress in getting it to play modern games on it. i'm sure that later on, after overclocking the chip, and liquid cooling it, they could run crysis.
- SuperCow1127, on 01/08/2008, -0/+3You aren't my tech support. My tech support would never suggest liquid cooling a laptop. Actually.
- Theli, on 01/08/2008, -0/+2"Does the price of the Asus really reflect its worth?"
You pay for portability, so yes.
- chingy1788, on 01/08/2008, -1/+20its like 1/4 the size of your laptop
- supermanred, on 01/08/2008, -5/+45Years of making Macs has rubbed off on Asus. The eeepc is a great linux machine.
- mossblaser, on 01/08/2008, -2/+5So years of making products for a Apple: a DRM lovin' closed source company that sells expensive hardware has lead to the eee pc: a "low end" laptop using open source software... Right...
- MattBD, on 01/08/2008, -0/+6Well, maybe they saw what they were doing wrong and decided not to make the same mistakes.
- mossblaser, on 01/08/2008, -2/+5So years of making products for a Apple: a DRM lovin' closed source company that sells expensive hardware has lead to the eee pc: a "low end" laptop using open source software... Right...
- Myonosken, on 01/08/2008, -1/+11I really want one of these for Uni. This + a cheap CRT monitor (a tenner in town!) and I am sorted for work. And I can use it in lectures.
- chingy1788, on 01/08/2008, -0/+6need a decent sized keyboard and mouse +$10
then you are ready for everything - lilrabbit129, on 01/08/2008, -0/+3Do yourself ( and your eyes ) a favor and spring for the LCD. If you spend any length of time in front of the computer, its well worth it.
- brufleth, on 01/08/2008, -1/+2Unless you're setting the refresh to below 60hertz a CRT is just fine. It took a long long time for LCDs to get to a point where they can compete with the CRT and you can pick up a 21 inch CRT for a song.
- chingy1788, on 01/08/2008, -0/+6need a decent sized keyboard and mouse +$10
- bluscale, on 01/08/2008, -12/+2Yeah, that statement isn't even backed up. Buried.
- cardyology, on 01/08/2008, -8/+16I might get one..... for my DOG!
- gunstar1, on 01/08/2008, -0/+6Your dog must be smart, does he code too!?!?
- starkruzr, on 01/08/2008, -0/+4You missed a crucial opportunity to quote Triumph the Insult Comic Dog.
- bowe, on 01/08/2008, -1/+5to POOP on!
- davidkeithjones, on 01/08/2008, -12/+3More successful than their mobos? Doubtful.
- PleaseJustDie, on 01/08/2008, -0/+5maybe not all of their motherboards combined, but each motherboard is a different product and its very likely that this is more successful than any one motherboard.
- 1310nm, on 01/08/2008, -0/+3Only people buying motherboards are those who build their own PCs, which is a small niche market. EeePC is available to anyone without need of knowledge of Legoing computers together. That said, PLEASE don't let the mobo business slide now, Asus!
- br0ken1128, on 01/08/2008, -4/+11Sweet now Jay-Z can pop in and do a commercial for them.
- peestandingup, on 01/08/2008, -1/+22Looks like Apple is a little late capitalizing on this one.
- SnowBladerX, on 01/08/2008, -2/+12Considering this is like the iPod of computers (simple, stripped down, easy to use) you are probably correct,
- drunkenoaf, on 01/08/2008, -8/+2But Apple make money by making Premium Devices. They're the BMW of computers. Why would they make a Ford Fiesta, when they don't do these things normally?
- Orderless, on 01/08/2008, -0/+8Ipod Shuffle?
- pegisys, on 01/08/2008, -1/+9compared to similar products they are still over charging for it.
If apple made an item such as the eeePC I could see them actually charging more for it then their regular laptops
- pegisys, on 01/08/2008, -1/+9compared to similar products they are still over charging for it.
- Orderless, on 01/08/2008, -0/+8Ipod Shuffle?
- drunkenoaf, on 01/08/2008, -8/+2But Apple make money by making Premium Devices. They're the BMW of computers. Why would they make a Ford Fiesta, when they don't do these things normally?
- directive0, on 01/08/2008, -0/+6Don't be so sure, the iPod was by no means the FIRST HD mp3 player. If they manage to get in with a more recognizable product they could still get some market share. That said, it will be extremely difficult for them with Asus getting so much positive press on their great product. Personally, I think this is one market where Apple has nothing truly innovative to bring to the table. The concept of a UMPC is pretty straightforward, there's nothing for them to really spin, but Macworld may prove me wrong.
- GMorgan, on 01/08/2008, -0/+2I'm sure they will make it silver and have the logo on it. Then it will be truly innovative.
- Wakuko, on 01/08/2008, -4/+0Macworld is just around the corner
You'll be amazed ;-) - stix213, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1I really doubt Apple will ever try to compete in this market. I mean they charge the same price for their tricked out cell phone, do you really think they'll build a laptop in that price point? Apple has never been about competitively priced products, they release really flashy and cool products with extremely high margins.
No high margins in the budget laptop market, so no Apple.
- SnowBladerX, on 01/08/2008, -2/+12Considering this is like the iPod of computers (simple, stripped down, easy to use) you are probably correct,
- SnowBladerX, on 01/08/2008, -8/+14Friend of mine picked one up this weekend, We installed XP on it, worked very well. Pretty cool little computer, Looking forward to see what kinda mods people come up for them.
Tutorial can be found here.
http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=1888- halobender, on 01/08/2008, -0/+23I don't really see the point in installing XP on it. Just get an XP laptop. Linux would just run so much better on this hardware.
- gunstar1, on 01/08/2008, -0/+6Completely agree. The point of the machine is the value and the simplicity. I might give one to my mom for email and ESPN.com since that is all she cares about. The simplicity and size are driving the sales.
- 35263526, on 01/08/2008, -5/+8I put XP on mine. Linux might run better, but XP doesn't run poorly, especially if you trim it down, and it means I get Office, Photoshop, and quite a number of slightly older games. Linux is great for it without a doubt, but Windows works nicely.
- roodammy44, on 01/08/2008, -0/+4For games.
This little thing can run battlefield 1942 - not the newest game I think you'll agree, but it is one of the most fun (with desert combat mod)- directrix13, on 01/08/2008, -0/+2I didn't realize the EEE has 3d acceleration.
- 35263526, on 01/08/2008, -0/+4It's got GMA900 integrated graphics; not great, but it works fine for older games and compiz. The major issue is that it offloads most work onto the processor, which in this case is only 900MHz (or 630MHz if you don't overclock) so it's not really comparable to C2D or similar machines with that chipset.
- faet, on 01/09/2008, -0/+1It also runs, CS1.6, UT '99, UT2004 fairly well. And WoW runs decently.
- directrix13, on 01/08/2008, -0/+2I didn't realize the EEE has 3d acceleration.
- kazamx, on 01/08/2008, -0/+5How much did it cost you for the XP license and the copy of Microsoft Office you put on? Seems alot to spend to me when the eeePC does it all already.
- halobender, on 01/08/2008, -0/+23I don't really see the point in installing XP on it. Just get an XP laptop. Linux would just run so much better on this hardware.
- pathy, on 01/08/2008, -14/+17I'd just like to point out that XP works really well on the Eee, and the default Xandros sucks.
For someone who doesn't really use computers that often, and just wants one for emailing, browsing the web and whatnot, the Eee is fantastic. It comes fully set up for everything they could possibly want.
For those who like to do more with their hardware, it's still a damn good buy if you're looking for something portable. (Note, portability has to be something you want here, if not you can get a much bette rdeal for only aa bit more cash.) Right now I've got eeeXubuntu running on it and it's pretty damn fine. I'm tossing and turning about putting XP on it - I like Linux, and it has some great features, but I am after all a Windows user.
My Eee right now is serving as a portable web browser, IRC client, Scumm machine and various other things. Getting used to managing apps on the screen is a little tricky, as well as the keyboard, but now I'm used to both I find it great to use.
If you want a portable laptop, the Eee is just perfect. Although you might want to pick up a portable hard drive or SDHC card to go along with it.- gunstar1, on 01/08/2008, -7/+18Ok...For those of you who LOOOOVE XP, great. But the EEE is a great little device with Xandros, or Ubuntu or any other KDE variant or...the point is: XP costs money, sucks memory and is bloated, even in the scaled form for the EEE. I have bought 3 of these EEE, one for me and two for my 7 and 9 year olds. Try installing the full desktop for Xandros before you go MSFT Fanboy on us. All we can say good about XP is that lots of people are stuck with it and it works better than Vista. And you wonder why Mac keeps picking up Market share and why Asus is learning from them!
- peestandingup, on 01/08/2008, -6/+14Sounds like you're the fanboy.
- pathy, on 01/08/2008, -11/+5Excuse me?
I turned on the 'Full' KDE enviroment inside of Xandros - I still didn't like it. Not being able to use all of the Etch repos without fear of breaking something sucked.
I've moved to Xubuntu, or rather eeeXubuntu, now and am quite happy with it.
However, on the Windows vs. Linux thing - ***** you.
Linux has a great deal of good features, I will happily admit. I like a lot of things it has going for it, but some I really do not.
I've used Windows for years. I know how to make it work fast, I know my way around it and I am happy using it. It's not slower, it's not a virus ridden mess and it works perfectly well.
***** zealots.- akilleen, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1Out of curiosity (not trying to convert your or anything, don't worry), what makes you want to go with windows? Is it just preference, or is there something windows does better for you? I am typically a windows user (though moving closer to linux all the time) and I haven't even thought about putting it on my EEE, since with eeeXubuntu I have everything I need.
And yea, eeeXubuntu is great, I just wish it had the fastinit like the default Xandros does. I miss the 15 second boot time.- pathy, on 01/08/2008, -3/+3My biggest grievance so far has been with software, not the OS itself.
When trying to get software on to my computer I'm finding that often I'm having to compile it myself if I want the latest version - which brings in the whole issue of making sure I have all the right libraries installed, and the -dev versions of them as well. This in itself isn't a major problem, but it is an annoyance. Especially when I compile something, only to find out later that it was missing some library and will be missing features.
With that, having to install and monitor multiple libraries for a lot of different apps is annoying as well, making sure the versions are correct, that Synaptic won't want to remove something important that a whole host of applications depend on...
Really, that's the major issue for me. I'm comfortable on Windows, and I have no reason to change. Linux has several tempting features, don't get me wrong, but Windows has everything I need and gives me no trouble.
- pathy, on 01/08/2008, -3/+3My biggest grievance so far has been with software, not the OS itself.

- TheWindBlows, on 01/08/2008, -1/+1Turn theme's off on XP and you've saved 60+MB's of RAM on XP...
You can have a fully functional XP only taking 80MB's of RAM
I still prefer Linux distro's though.
- gunstar1, on 01/08/2008, -7/+18Ok...For those of you who LOOOOVE XP, great. - motang, on 01/08/2008, -0/+12That is very good news. I am glad that Asus see success with the Eee PC as this could mean we shall see more variants of it like bigger screen size or with more memory down the line.
- thebigbradwolf, on 01/08/2008, -1/+7I also have one and love it. I've only had it two days though. The keyboard is either just as small as possible, I wish the right shift key and the arrow were switched.
Xandros is childish, but I appreciate it and the large icons, but also like to bring up the console to work in.
It's a very nice machine, and the cheaper than pretty much anything else. It's also nice that it's not ugly. It's smaller than my portable DVD player.- adrake, on 01/09/2008, -0/+1I thought Xandros was great for the vast majority of people. If you're a more technical user, you can consult a Debian install guide that I wrote: http://adrake.wordpress.com/eeepc
- thebigbradwolf, on 01/09/2008, -0/+0I just wish they'd put make on by default, and GIMP. Not that I'm planning any major photo editing on the thing, just that I plan to do some painting and the two applications aren't particularly useful. I like Xandros in general, I think it's a better interface for the small screen, but I havn't added anything to the tabs, and it seems relatively difficult. Plus, what is eeeAP? I guess I can install it and then remove it. (Still havn't gotten an SD card)

- brasszombie, on 01/08/2008, -1/+6Anyone know how long the battery lasts? It would be cool to watch a few movies and shows on those long train rides. on another note Asus mobos rules.
- gunstar1, on 01/08/2008, -0/+2about 3-4.5 hours depending on settings. There is a bigger battery coming out for extending the life, just like most cellphones.
- Gunsotsu, on 01/08/2008, -0/+25There is a lot of people that down on this computer, but it represents a huge shift in the laptop market. It's size is it's greatest strength, and while many will say the screen size and it's hard drive size is it's greatest weaknesses, anyone that actually gets their hands on one quickly changes their tune. The screen is extremely usable at 800x480 on a 7" screen, and while a 10" would be nice, the 3" increase in size would ruin the overall form factor of the Eee. As for the size of the hard drive, how much of your hard drive do you actually use? I'm willing to be a good majority of your hard drive is bloated with a ton of garbage that you will never, or have never, used before. Those that have installed XP on their Eee have usually done so through the help of nLite and stripped out all useless garbage making it play much nicer on the Eee. Even though either operating system would leave you with somewhere in the neighborhood of 1.8GB left on your hard drive, that's plenty for most anyone's need. Network a good 500GB or 1TB for when you are home, slap a 8 or 16GB SDHC card in the SD slot, maybe carry a portable USB hard drive, and this little power house will meet anyone's needs. (Oh, and hook an external monitor up to it to enjoy 1600x1200, add a USB keyboard and mouse, and throw all that together with your networked hard drive and you'll have a sweet desktop system too.)
Apple and others need to pay attention and take note, the Eee is a serious computer, and it marks a return to what a laptop should be... a portable personal computer.- kazamx, on 01/08/2008, -0/+2there are strong rumours that Apple is planning on releasing a UMPC, I wonder hoe Apple will go after the eee pc.
- YourTechSupport, on 01/08/2008, -0/+4Someone give this man a column!
- ungamedplayer, on 01/09/2008, -0/+2I agree, if only there was some kind of place for good (and free) technical writing.
- xspinkickx, on 01/08/2008, -0/+10I got one for my mom, upgraded the ram, installed gutsy gibbon on it, works like a charm.
- gunstar1, on 01/08/2008, -1/+9Ok-if you don't like the tabbed Xandros, note that it is not the only Xandros-it is a specific version for the EEE. Download squad has a simple article that shows how to install the full desktop version of Xandros for the EEE in about 5 minutes. Give that a try. I agree with most other people that say that EEExubuntu is a pretty great alternative OS. Try the full desktop or the Xubuntu for the machine. They make it a truly unbelievable value. Also, if you brick it like I did, just hit F9 while it boots, you can restore factory settings from the BIOS in a hidden partition faster than my LG Voyager starts up-you'll be amazed!
- kidlawless, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1For those of you who have them: I read an early review that loved this machine, *except* that Open Office ran really, really slowly on it. I would very much like to get one of these (perhaps after april, reading these comments), but would use it mostly for portable web & word processing on the fly. Anyone have problems with the Open Office performance? Are there other word processing options for the linux platform? (Mac user/linux noob here...)
- pathy, on 01/08/2008, -0/+5AbiWord is what I'm using at the moment. Works very nicely.
- pak314, on 01/08/2008, -0/+2I have an eeepc. What did you find slow about Open Office. It takes about 6 seconds to load up the first time. Second time maybe 4 seconds. This is not too far from the desktop version. Now I don't really use an office suite much so perhaps there is some other aspect that is slow. I did bump my eeepc to 1G ram however since they are so cheap these days.
- adrake, on 01/09/2008, -0/+1AbiWord is alright I suppose. If you want to get into serious Linux/Unix text editing (i.e., you don't need to do fancy things) then vim is the way to go. It has quite a learning curve, but after you have it figured out you certainly wont regret it. The added bonus is that it's terminal based, so it doesn't get much faster.
- thebigbradwolf, on 01/09/2008, -0/+0In vi in command mode, I had problems with the arrow keys on the eee (they were spitting out letters rather than moving the cursor). Decided to use nano this far.
- ElAssoWipo, on 01/08/2008, -1/+5I bought one for one of my sons. That thing, so far, is indestructible. I keep thinking it's broken, fell off the table about 12 times. Nothing. Not a scratch. Runs perfect.
Aside from the size, which is the whole point of the product anyway, I don't have any criticisms. Not at that price anyway. - PRlME, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1"the buzz the Asus Eee PC will (or at least should) get for announcing a Wi-MAX equipped model"
I don't know where that buzzing is coming from there might be a fly stuck in your ear since alot of company's are not sure where their standing with Wi-Max Sprint dropped their support of Wi-Max last quarter.- stix213, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1Agreed. If I knew where a single Wi-Max network was located then maybe I might get excited. Just having either B,G, or N is good enough for me.
- djdole, on 01/08/2008, -2/+8It's quite interesting how one neglected word can make Asus's benign comment into a sensationalistic and VERY inaccurate Digg submission title.
The word; "THEIR".
Place it between 'is' and 'Most'. - grexeo, on 01/08/2008, -0/+7Has anyone actually tried surfing the web with one of these? The majority of sites are now designed for 1024x768 so horizontal scrolling is unavoidable for the most part.
That said, the rest of the unit is very nice. If their new model(s) have 1024 horizontal screen resolution or higher in that form factor, I'd certainly purchase one.- TheWindBlows, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1simple firefox 3 saves zoom settings for websites automatically so you can zoom it to fit your screen. and it scales the entire page quite nicely. (yes it works on images and flash video/animations)
Though it'd be nice if somebody ported the Gecko 1.9 engine into a lightweight browser so we have FX3 like zoom on a small fast browser for things like the eee PC- Jorophose, on 01/09/2008, -0/+0Gecko is crap, but you could use Kazehakase (sp?), that japanese GTK2 browser that uses Gecko, included in Fluxbuntu.
It's too bad Epiphany w/ WebKit is taking so damn long, it would have been great for the EEE.
- Jorophose, on 01/09/2008, -0/+0Gecko is crap, but you could use Kazehakase (sp?), that japanese GTK2 browser that uses Gecko, included in Fluxbuntu.
- adrake, on 01/09/2008, -0/+1I haven't had any issues surfing on it at all. All the sites I've been to that are wider than the screen have ads on the right sidebar, so those are the only thing I miss and I'm certainly not complaining about that.

- Tapewormz, on 01/08/2008, -1/+3I'd purchase an Eee PC over a Kindle any day. Hopefully Amazon realizes this, and redesigns the piece of junk.
- TheWolfen, on 01/09/2008, -0/+2Totally different target audience and purpose, although I am considering an eee for reading ebooks. That or the next gen Kindle, depending on what else I'll use it for.
- MrViklund, on 01/08/2008, -2/+2Allow me to laugh. Of course they are saying that because they want to promote their own product. I do not believe for one second that this is Asus most successful product ever, or "the" most successful product ever.
- stix213, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1Why not? Asus built their business around their motherboards, but they sell tons of different ones, making any single motherboard not necessarily that successful of a product. There are only a few EEE PC models and I have been hearing that they are selling like crazy.
- beerbarron, on 01/08/2008, -1/+1Combine apple's styling and the engineering of asus, and you'd have a pretty damned good machine. I have just purchased one of these for work, am really looking forward to this!
- willywong, on 01/08/2008, -1/+4How do I buy one? I've been searching on google and found a website but it was pretty useless for actually purchasing one. The main asus website doesn't even seem to be working. I don't see how it's become such a great selling product if buying one is so difficult.
- mgrucker, on 01/08/2008, -0/+4Generally you buy them from a "store".
Try here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Sub ...
or here: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw/105-8841749-5 ... - adrake, on 01/09/2008, -0/+1I picked mine up from Directron: http://www.directron.com
Their prices/shipping/service are great, and you can add a 2GB stick of RAM for about $40 if you so choose. - thebigbradwolf, on 01/09/2008, -0/+0I picked mine up at microcenter (Kansas) http://www.microcenter.com , if you live near one, you can even have it sent to the store and pick it up there. (They only had white in 4g)

- zgeorge, on 01/08/2008, -2/+4Why is everyone waiting till April? What's happening in April? I like the Eee PC, and wondering if I shouldn't get one now. Like someone mentioned, great for my bathroom.
- Naidel, on 01/08/2008, -0/+2It's supposed to arrive in Europe then.
- kazamx, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1It came out in Europe about the same time as it did in the US.
The reason everyone is excited about April is because that is when V2 is coming out. From the CES announcement, it will have an 8.9 inch screen rather than the current 7. That means that most websites will work without side scrolling.- Naidel, on 01/10/2008, -0/+0Oh really? We don't have it in Sweden. Here it's due in April.
- kazamx, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1It came out in Europe about the same time as it did in the US.
- Naidel, on 01/08/2008, -0/+2It's supposed to arrive in Europe then.
- jesperhh, on 01/08/2008, -0/+3Can you buy one in Europe yet? I want one!
- kazamx, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1They are everywhere in the UK. Just check out Toys r Us. For some reason the original plan was to market these as kids laptops and Toys R Us bought a bunch early on. Then the geeks heard about it and Asus realised its more of a general computer. Toys R Us had the majority of the original batch though.
- elewis33, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1What is the typical wait time to get one of these? All the web sites I see that offer them show them either as back ordered or "preorder".
- adrake, on 01/09/2008, -0/+1Try http://www.directron.com
That's where I got mine, they had a bunch in stock (including green and pink models). - thebigbradwolf, on 01/09/2008, -0/+0I got mine in less than 24 hours from microcenter (order online pick up in store) I was concerned about getting it shipped to the house (especially in january in kansas). www.microcenter.com
- adrake, on 01/09/2008, -0/+1Try http://www.directron.com
- smakusdod, on 01/08/2008, -5/+1Well let's see here... offering a decent and practical product at a decent and practical price = success.
AMAZING. Congratulations, Asus, you ***** retards. We can only hope that other technology companies figure out such complex economics and stop gouging consumers.- passedoutghost, on 01/08/2008, -0/+0I see you like Macs then.
- Scyth3, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1Buy them at the more popular asus dealers, like ExcaliberPC (here's the white one, they have a black one as well): http://www.excaliberpc.com/Asus_Eee_PC_701_7_Noteb ...
- X111, on 01/08/2008, -2/+2***** story. The article has a broken link to a supposed Engadget story, Engadget themselves have no news on the Eee since mid December and the Asus Eee pc site itself has no news updates since November.
And still dugg to the front page. Nice one. - rallen71366, on 01/08/2008, -0/+0I'm planning on getting one soon. But I haven't decided what OS to install. Xandros is right out. I'm trying to decide between: Damn Small Linux, Zenwalk, XUbuntu, or ReactOS. I might just set it up to use the internal ram for storage and boot off whatever flash drive is plugged in.
- Jorophose, on 01/09/2008, -0/+0ReactOS? On a production environment?!?
I'm personally getting the pink Surf 2G for a friend of mine, and putting on Debian for her with Xfce. Should fit just well enough, and I think there's a way to mount /var somewhere else (maybe on the flash drive and get her to dump /var constantly? or even disable logs?)
It's too bad they take so long to update to the latest Wine. If they could figure out an APT-like system, and sync with Wine's releases, it'd be nice.
- Jorophose, on 01/09/2008, -0/+0ReactOS? On a production environment?!?
- KevinJim, on 01/09/2008, -0/+1Don't get me wrong. But is Eee PC the new iPod ?
- ijustfloat, on 01/09/2008, -0/+1My friend picked one up and threw Xubuntu on it. It runs amazingly.
