- jshabad00, on 01/21/2008, -2/+33Easily the best review to date. Very detailed. Good read.
- adderx99, on 01/21/2008, -2/+17great review. - verdict? nothing we didn't already know: its nice, but wait for 4.1
my prediction is that kde is the desktop environment of the future, but until then, ill keep using gnome. - zaldoe, on 01/21/2008, -2/+16"KDE 4.0 is a very rough first step, but the underlying technology is extremely promising."
Sounds good. - Grimdotdotdot, on 01/21/2008, -2/+15"Your ***** stupid" would make a great T-shirt.
- schestowitz, on 01/21/2008, -6/+16Indeed... and it doesn't neglect to mention the role of KDE 4.0.0, which is often misunderstood.
- Philluminati, on 01/21/2008, -6/+16You don't know what your talking about. You think a taskbar and an applications makes something a Windows clone? Your ***** stupid
- dualscreenman, on 01/21/2008, -0/+7It also gives Plasma tough love without "OMG GNOME!!11!!!" sensationalistm. I like.
- JohnFlux, on 01/21/2008, -1/+7Nobody ever reviews what I work on - the kde 'task manager'. That's the drawback for working on the 'necessary but unsexy' parts of programs - oh woe is me. :-D
- dualscreenman, on 01/21/2008, -4/+10The only similarity is that both are black. Does Microsoft have a patent on black or something? You have no clue what you're talking about.
- Philluminati, on 01/21/2008, -1/+7Are we sure that 4.1 is going to be first properly stable version?
- Darkhacker, on 01/21/2008, -0/+6Try *using* it. Trust me. It's nothing like Vista. If the panel had been semi-transparant you'd probably be like "ZOMG! Th3y c0p1ed OS X!!!one!!!1"
- Darkhacker, on 01/21/2008, -0/+6KDE 4 refers to the entire series while KDE 4.0 refers to the initial release. It has nothing to do with "covering their asses". The KDE team was fully aware that KDE 4.0 was buggy for end users. It was designed for developers and as a demonstration of the core technologies; Solid, Phonon, Plasma, etc.
- Darkhacker, on 01/21/2008, -0/+6"I want an excuse to ditch Windows but still haven't found one."
Unless you have some crucial application you need Windows for, there are plenty of reasons to ditch Windows. Malware, bloat, and lack of customization come to mind. You can try Hardy Heron on a LiveCD to see if the new kernel detects your hardware or not. - piesforyou, on 01/21/2008, -0/+6Good call. I made the wrong decision and found out there's even another page after that one!
- kidcodea, on 01/21/2008, -1/+6Yeah... at least everyone would know you can't write proper English.
- WarBiscuit, on 01/21/2008, -0/+5You work on the KDE task manager? Kudos to you, kind sir.
It may not get reviewed much, but I can promise at least some of us seriously appreciate the addition.
Especially those of us developing programs which like to crash and leave zombies lying about.
A task manager is a killer app for me...
even if considered unsexy by the mainstream KDE users :)
I'll probably use it more than the whole of control center. - jshabad00, on 01/21/2008, -0/+5Seems to me System Monitor was one of the first "finished" KDE4 apps and screenshots were everywhere back a few months ago... but anyway, thanks for your work!
Am I going to be able to drag sensors to a panel any time soon? - marklarznexyne, on 01/21/2008, -0/+4Well the widgets look better than the unavoidable thick plastic themes for KDE.
I might try it in a release or two, but for now I'm really happy with Gnome + Compiz. - jdhore1, on 01/21/2008, -0/+4That hasn't been the way the kernel's done things since the 2.4 branch. It is however the way GNOME does things.
- inactive, on 01/21/2008, -4/+8You lazy bastard.
- BuhSnarf, on 01/21/2008, -0/+3John, good work on the task manager. It's not revolutionary. But it really is an improvement on the kde3.5 version and to be honest probably one of the more polished of the kde4 apps.
You may not get the appreciation on blogs etc. But people are glad it's there! - Macuyiko, on 01/21/2008, -0/+3Sure: http://home.kde.org/~binner/kde-four-live/
- spyrochaete, on 01/21/2008, -2/+5Isn't that the way the Linux world works? Even numbered decimal releases are release candidates and odd numbers are stable?
- TheWindBlows, on 01/21/2008, -0/+3also have to consider the current versions stability isn't exactly on the A+ side either.
- muffinmanpoo, on 01/22/2008, -0/+3Also, there's one here:
http://home.kde.org/~binner/kde-four-live/ - spyrochaete, on 01/21/2008, -2/+5I was really hoping to try KDE4 on Kubuntu Gutsy on my new PC last week. Unfortunately my hardware is too new so my video card and onboard NIC didn't detect. I hope hardware support is up to date for Hardy. I want an excuse to ditch Windows but still haven't found one.
- gavintlgold, on 01/21/2008, -1/+4I think in this case it's good to have multiple pages. It's a VERY long review.
- thestaton, on 01/21/2008, -0/+3I installed it last night, It's a nice looking interface, that has a ton of potential. Although when running it via virtualization on the mac it's a little slow, compared to dare I say xp... *gasp*.
- smek2, on 01/21/2008, -0/+3"While reading this article, it is important to keep in mind that KDE 4 is still largely incomplete." -- well, maybe I'll keep a look if they finished it..
- epohs, on 01/21/2008, -1/+3Phonon sounds really great.
- adrien, on 01/21/2008, -2/+4The new version of KDE apparently still features very poor font rendering.
Please someone influential in the Linux community consider implementing the ideas in this article:
http://antigrain.com/research/font_rasterization/i ...
To me, the leaders in charge of user interfaces in the Linux world are lost. They don't seem to have any design ideals.
I notice, however, that the Linux community continuously makes progress. There is a long way to go. - JohnFlux, on 01/21/2008, -0/+2The freetype people are in charge of the font stuff. Bug them :-)
As for UI - if you have specific suggestions, file a bug report. I'm a KDE developer and I'm always asking for UI people to look over my work. But there's more demand than there is supply. - wtsexton00, on 01/21/2008, -0/+2No even numbers are stable and odd are development, at least with the kernel.
- jadrian, on 01/21/2008, -0/+2Yes. Here is a SUSE KDE 4.0 Live CD:
http://home.kde.org/~binner/kde-four-live/ - InorganicMatter, on 01/27/2008, -0/+2I very much appreciate the task manager. Linux has needed a good one for a long time now. Well done.
- Darkhacker, on 01/21/2008, -0/+2I think you did a great job! ;-)
- inactive, on 01/21/2008, -1/+3Is there a KDE4 live cd avaliable?
- RobotBuddha, on 01/22/2008, -1/+2I say this as a long time linux user, and as someone with no desire to use anything else. But the linux way, from what I've seen, is that version numbers mean nothing and you'll always be told you're using the wrong version if you run into a problem.
- Darkhacker, on 01/21/2008, -1/+2The reason for that is they want to target the mainstream a bit more. They want to find a balance so that power users are happy while still making it easy to use, without turning it into GNOME (note: this is not a bash against GNOME. I love GNOME and the simple interface is an advantage in many cases just like KDE's configurability is an advantage in many cases). Thankfully KDE 4 will be highly extensible in many ways (applications too, not just Plasma) so you'll be able to add back any missing features.
- RobotBuddha, on 01/22/2008, -0/+1Most of the manpower for virtulization on osx goes to XP. With linux, there's not many, if any, performance hand-holding. I'd advise actually using kde4 packages compiled for osx, unless I misunderstood your comment and you already are. True, it's not a window manager at that point. But if you're running osx you already have one.
- niallabrown, on 01/22/2008, -1/+2It's great, keep up the awesome work.
- pkaoc, on 01/21/2008, -0/+1SHOCK! Its also very buggy, even compared to xp!!! :0 .looks pretty cool though, i installed it the other nite but it keeps crashing!!
- adrien, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1You are right about FreeType. I will suggest that they have a look at the article.
I will consider writing bug reports.
Doing so for the Mozilla community has been of little help though. So I guess I need to find the energy. (I have been reporting serious, easy-to-reproduce, supposedly relatively easy-to-fix, usability bugs against Thunderbird with acknowledgment from the developers, but zero fixes.) - rossinio, on 01/21/2008, -2/+2Wow that page is brilliant, put into words what I've been trying to describe as the major problem with linux for a long time..
- tripzero, on 01/21/2008, -2/+2When you define a release you set a limited number of features and call it 4.0, you do the same for 4.1 and so on. You cannot complain that 4.0 is incomplete because it doesn't have features planned for later versions in the 4 series. It's like saying the Book of John is not finished because it didn't include the book of Revelations.
- pyrates, on 01/21/2008, -5/+2Why did they even release it if it is not finished yet? How can they call it a release if it's not finished yet? I'd call this more of a Release Candidate then anything else.
- apache2, on 01/21/2008, -9/+4The KDE developers have responded to criticisms of the release by articulating what they consider to be an important distinction between "KDE 4" and KDE 4.0.
They just say that to cover their asses. ;P - neilschelly, on 01/21/2008, -11/+5My coworker showed me KDE4 running on his laptop on Friday and I was very unimpressed. I'm a KDE fan who's been using it since the 2.x releases at least, but the reasons I've always liked it is the million options I have to customize the desktop. If I didn't want those, I'd use Gnome or something like that, which is generally a much simpler interface with fewer do-hickies and checkboxes for everything.
It seems like KDE4 really Gnome-ified things, with a little Vista and MacOS thrown in to keep up visually. But with every right-click menu looking less functional and lots of changes that didn't immediately look disable-able, I'll likely stick with the KDE3.5 I'm running now for some time. Luckily for me I guess, I run Debian on my desktop, so I'll be with it for awhile anyway. ;-)
-N - saturn5, on 01/21/2008, -12/+2Umm... I'm not the first to point this out. Read some of the other reviews. The black taskbar, pale gray/white windows. Not exactly an original idea. After all the hype they came up with something that looks just like Vista Basic. If you don't see it you are either playing dumb or are just ***** idiots.
- elijahalcantara, on 01/21/2008, -12/+2Nice article ... but I stopped reading after I saw that I had to click to another page.
