- fatas, on 07/26/2008, -1/+15The sheer stupidity of this article is astonishing.
Yes Linux can break into the desktop world with the command line
"Hello World" app. - 3242130193, on 07/26/2008, -0/+13I'd come up with a rebuttal to this, but this article is so senseless that I'm too confused to do it now. Just buried for being entirely wrong.
I mean, seriously, the guy says that if he doesn't want to use Gnome, then he can use another WM. Right - Enlightenment and Gnome serve the same purpose. Go ahead, try it and tell me if it works. Better yet, if you want a real option, just build your own DE - it's not that hard.
If you're annoyed by the fact that UBUNTU packs more tips and notifications around when you upgrade to a newer version, then find something else! Or just stick with an old one. It's going to happen - Shuttleworth has clearly stated that his biggest goal is to appeal to a broad userbase. In order for that to happen, he'll slowly have to appeal to more general users who are just trying to find their way around. I felt the same way when I started using 8.04, so I switched to Debian and I'm happier than ever.
And honestly, Ubuntu is not ruining Linux in any way. Maybe it's changing the way that it's presented so that it appeals to newer users... but does that mean that the people that use older, more advanced distros are changing their ways? Does it mean that Gentoo and Slackware and Fedora users are just going to vanish? No, they will always be there doing it their own way - damn if Ubuntu changes that. Adding a new dimension to the scene isn't touching in any way what's already there. - agentlame, on 07/26/2008, -1/+14'What is Ubuntu's roll in this? There really isn't one. ...But by suggesting that "Ubuntu is ruining Linux" in the title, I figure I'll catch more trolls.'
Wow, does he even realize how ironic that statement is? - MistaMatt90, on 07/26/2008, -0/+9I disagree with everything in this article... however, if you have the same issues with Gnome, let me list a quicker and easier solution to your troubles:
KDE
XFCE
Enlightenment - rmflagg, on 07/26/2008, -0/+4"Are Gnome and Ubuntu ruining the Linux Desktop?"
No. - diemunkiesdie, on 07/26/2008, -1/+3Oh no Greg Laden!?! My bad, should I get off your lawn as well?! I know you don't like us damn kids playing here!
- dexdigg, on 07/27/2008, -0/+2i switched from gnome to xfce a few months ago and I haven't looked back. I've never been a huge fan of KDE. Not because it doesn't work well or anything, but just the way it's laid out doesn't suit me. Just ditch Gnome if you don't like it! This article is absurd.
- cantormath, on 07/27/2008, -0/+1Why do we need to do anything?
I have no problem running something else (Slackware+KDE).... - twistadias, on 07/27/2008, -0/+1realted to bin laden?
