- Ssullivan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I simply don't see how this will affect linux at all. Linux will run on all x86 hardware Mac OSX will not. Heck linux will even run on Mac PPC hardware. Linux's main attraction is on the server side and Mac certaintly can't compete with linux there. Plus the Mac OS is just as bad as windows (if not worse) with the whole "hold your hand" concept of over simplifying things, as well as the eye-candy. Mac makes a good OS for the average user, but for the average geek Linux/unix definetely is the only choice.
- linuxbox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What "hassels" of Linux? Anyways there is going to be a push for Linux when both Apple and MS push DRM (digital rights management). There is something very wrong when an OS maker can lock up YOUR data if you don't pay you monthly OS bill.
- eclectro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is FUD, because you still have to buy the Apple dongle errr machine.
- drpepper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, I consider myself dumber after reading this FUD. That's all this is, is FUD. This guy is only looking at what he wants to look at and leaving out all of the really important stuff. If you are going to pick a winner out of Apple's move to Intel, I would say that it is Apple and Linux. They only loser M$. Here is some of the things this guy conveniently forgot to mention or that he completely doesn't understand.
1. Apple's move to Intel means almost nothing to the end user. The only thing they are going to notice is a better laptop CPUs.
2. Apples move to x86 does not magically make them more of a competitor to M$.
3. "While Apple ran on the PowerPC chip the amount of developer effort in the Open Source camps was nil" Hmm, that is news to me, I didn't know they did not have any open source developers. http://www.apple.com/opensource/
4. He thinks if you write a program for Linux that it can not be proprietary. Some examples of proprietary software for Linux is VMware, Doom 3, Unreal Tournament, ATI drivers, and Nvida drivers.
5. Linux is FREE.
6. Linux runs on hardware that is made by more than one vendor.
7. Linux is Open Sourced.
8. Linux can run on many architectures not just the ones that Apple supports.
So, until Apple open sources it's kernel and works on more than its own hardware, it's not going to kill Linux.
I am not saying that Apples is not a good OS. I'm just saying that this move is not going to kill Linux, and that this guy is just trying to spread FUD. - bonlebon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Some Linux hassles:
The winmodems cards, the old problem that have put people with old PCs and lappys out of the scene, remember not everyone has to money to upgrade believe it or not, sure is not a Linux problem but the common user doesn't understand that.
The dependency issues with some applications, sure some can be solved using apt but not all, there is always the 101 problem that keeps you from installing or running an application.
Recompiling the kernel is not the cup of tea of many.
Xserver can be a real bitch under some circumstances.
Not all the hardware available this days have Linux support, take the common user who wants his 31337 card working, remember he paid a good dough for it, it performs better under windows than Linux, who do you think he is gonna aim form.
And sorry I'm not a party pooper but if you are not ready to accept and deal with this disadvantages you won't be able to convince anyone to use Linux. - jarjarbinks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Next time please post a copy I don't have to sign in for. Thanks. Oh, and geek will always use Linux. :)

- bonlebon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, is not a secret for anyone that apple and Microsoft have an enemy in common: Linux, let's see, Microsoft has apple stock, apple runs an UNIX OS, now apple will have Intel processors which will make easy to run the bunch of Windows based/FOSS applications out there, Linux consultants are scaring the enterprise away due the overhead Linux could represent and not everyone is a geek or have the time to deal with Linux hassles, hmmm, sure it won't be the end of Linux but all these facts will make big road blocks for it's growth.
- linuxbox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well the hardware problem has nothing to do with Linux. It has to do with the fact most hardware companies have their hand in MS pocket. Dependances can be a problem that is true but not as big as problem as some make it seem. I've had 3 xorg crashes 2 were my fault and the 3rd was mostly caused by me. Most likely a Linux user will never compile a kernel from source until they are a avid user.
An OS is like a haircut when you first get a new one it feels strange but once you get used to it you stay with that same haircut the rest of your life. - test5477, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0not that much is going to change. It will still be apple at something under 10% and MS with 80%+. Linux is more of a MS problem, Apple has always been the under dog and they like that role. Now that we will be able to run Windows, OSX and Linus on the Intel Apples it will help them all but It might hurt MS more than anyone. Apple has always made pretty good hardware and if this remains the case then I see Apple not worrying about MS and definately not Linux. This will only help Apple in the long run.
- Ssullivan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"FCUK linux.... a unix based OSX and windows will make the perfect dual boot system."
and that sentence sums up your intelligence... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Some Linux hassels:

I've been using Linux exclusively on my desktop system for almost 2 years now, and every program I've gotten with apt has worked perfectly as soon as I installed it.
And about 95% of the programs that I've aliened or even built from source worked. and I have no formal linux training. i just have common sense. - monolith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually it'll help linux. Because now those apps will be binary compatible with intel on linux and I think a mine (ie mac wine on intel) will be much easer to do. I might actually buy one of Apples intel machines... too run linux on it ofcoarse. Also more hardware with differese drivers for mac/windows on intel... more potential hardware for linux.
- SupaDawgX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This pulls apple & MS together much more closely. This all has the potential implications for someone to finally run both MacOS and Windows on the same box. FCUK linux.... a unix based OSX and windows will make the perfect dual boot system.
- jakenovak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree that it will hurt GNU/Linux, but insignificantly on the IA-32 platform. However, PPC Linux can kiss itself goodbye...
Oh, and SupaDawgX, you need to read up on the term "UNIX" before you call OS X "UNIX based". There isn't a single line of System V code in Darwin... - Ssullivan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"FCUK linux.... a unix based OSX and windows will make the perfect dual boot system."
and that sentence sums up your intelligence... - tpenta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I must take issue with the comment in the initial post:
"Linux was the only X86 alternative to Microsoft ..."
This is simply untrue.
The BSD variants were around well before linux and have a great following. Sun also is throwing a lot of development at Solaris on Intel and AMD hardware is is putting forward a compelling operating environment, as well as open sourcing the Operating System/Network code later this month.
It's not about one OS being better than another. No OS is better than all others for all things.
The decision on what OS to run should be based purely on, what is best for the application and folks using it.
Alan.
http://blogs.sun.com/tpenta - jonnymj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How is apple switching to intel an new competitor for Microsoft?? They are a software company while Apple is a Hardware company. If anything this will increase sales if Apples give you the ability to dual boot. This could also be bad for apple if they open up their system to 3rd party products. Doesnt Microsoft still own part of Apple anyways???
- ncamp, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0I do not think linux will be hit too hard. Apple is still going to produce their own hardware. It will have a limited driver base, and will still be considered a Mac. Linux still runs on a ton of differnet platforms, and will run on just about every pc that is produced. You probably will not be able to say the same thing about the x86 version of Mac OS X
