http://www.thecodingstudio.com/opensource/linux/sc ... - InorganicMatter, on 06/19/2008, -1/+14Some call this a con, I call it a pro: Novell made a deal with Microsoft. OpenSUSE works flawlessly in a Windows Directory environment, and is the only Linux distribution Microsoft will officially support in enterprise networking.
That, and the fact that the amount of polish Novell put into SUSE rivals that of Mac OS X. It just works a lot better than Red Hat and Debian based distros. - inactive, on 06/20/2008, -3/+15SUSE changed my view on expanding and trying a different OS when i had Windows XP ..and guess what ?
I LOVED IT ! :) - DeathGod321, on 06/19/2008, -2/+14OpenSuSE actually comes with the ***** that you actually need installed by default. I can't tell you how many times I've had to "fix" scripts for my coworkers using Ubuntu by installing basic programs. I usually don't try to force people to switch any type of software, especially operating systems, but since you asked for it: maybe it's time to take off the Linux training wheels and start using a distro that wasn't made for tech savvy grandpas.
- darkchild, on 06/19/2008, -5/+16This has to be one of the best distro releases ever. The vast improvements in package management are more than welcome. ;)
- 4321234, on 06/20/2008, -3/+13Some people condemn Suse for a patent agreement with MS, but the openSuSE community didn't really have anything to do with it. Others condemn Ubuntu for including proprietary modules in the default kernel. Pick your poison.
- blakejohnson86, on 06/19/2008, -1/+10Out of the box:
OpenSUSE 11.0 feels more power-user friendly in my opinion.
Banshee 1.0.
Network Manager 0.7 SVN / 3G support.
Firefox 3.0 (Beta 5)
It by default looks "cleaner", but that's an opinion. - shifty2, on 06/19/2008, -2/+11legitimate question here:
What makes openSUSE better than say, Ubuntu or Fedora? or comparison between different Linux distributions?
I'm not inviting the trolls or biased opinions. Just trying to figure out why one is better than the other. - nxxm, on 06/19/2008, -2/+11dont directlink to the crowded developer/publishers site you moron. you are all making the digg/slashdot-effect even worse.
there are plenty of mirrors and p2p-means to get it you ph00l.
even coralcache exists.
http://download.opensuse.org.nyud.net/distribution ... - MrViklund, on 06/19/2008, -6/+14Wonderful!
One of the best distros out there! And it feels great with a big company backing this distro. - nationalist, on 06/19/2008, -1/+9technically yes, realistically no
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=v ... - cougar618, on 06/19/2008, -1/+9You could just dl the live cd and try it for yourself... but that's probably to convenient
- 4321234, on 06/20/2008, -0/+8Actually, the last I read about the company they were doing a little better. Linux users should hope Novell thrives, of all linux companies they hold the most software patents. If they ever got in serious financial trouble, you can imagine what large software company might want to buy up all those patents. There's still a lot of people around who call themselves linux enthusiasts who are actually retarded enough to hope Novell goes under and even advocate boycotting Novell. I hope you understand why those people are clueless ***** idiots.
- malsaher, on 06/19/2008, -8/+16OpenSUSE FTW !!!
- hoodster, on 06/20/2008, -0/+6in ver 11 you'll find xfce in the 'other' submenu
- courtjester555, on 06/19/2008, -2/+8The distrowatch link: http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=suse
At the time of writing, it looks like http://en.opensuse.org/Download is down. However, openSUSE 11 torrents are available at http://linuxtracker.org/ - darkchild, on 06/19/2008, -0/+6No its not.
- Archon810, on 06/19/2008, -1/+6YAST FTW!!!
- mrsteveman1, on 06/20/2008, -3/+8Great...
So you want people to publish stuff, pay for servers and bandwidth, entirely out of their own pocket....why?
Ads pay for most of the web right now. - Culyt, on 06/20/2008, -1/+6I think criticizing that is a bit much, it doesn't actually prevent the website from being accessible. Much better than those attention whore "we block Firefox because it supports extensions that include adblockers" sites.
- Irco, on 06/19/2008, -1/+6I've been following this since 10.3. Any Linux enthusiast would be able to appreciate it, event those who have only tried ubuntu.
The package manager is amazing, they finally got it to be really fast!
The suse's kde also is pretty neat, they always add cool little details that make their features integrate quite well with the desktop environment. - DJNephilim, on 06/19/2008, -1/+6The package manager is SO fast now. HUGE improvement over 10.x and older, literally. Where it would take a long time updating repos and stuff when ever you tried to do anything in it, it now takes seconds, and the repos don't update at every mouse-click anymore. They seem to just update when you open the manager or add repos and that's it, and even that is fast fast fast.
Note: I've only gotten to play with it for about an hour before work, so take that as you will. - MrViklund, on 06/19/2008, -3/+7The Torrent is really slow now because there are only 300 seeders and over 4000 leachers. But it will get better in a day or so. And I'm not in a hurry. Feels great to contribute in some way by using bittorrent.
- LZeppelinJ0, on 06/19/2008, -0/+4It's really all about taste and what you're used to in the end.
This was my first Linux Distro and I happened to enjoy it a bit more than any other distro (except maybe PCLinuxOS) but I couldn't give you a -good- reason why, it just feels better/familiar to me.
All in all though this is a awesome release, but I do recommend using KDE3.5 over KDE4 for the time being. Lot more stable, faster and looks way better. - threemagic, on 06/19/2008, -2/+6Novell is in SuSE's corner.. Novell Open Enterprise Server runs on SuSE
- 4321234, on 06/20/2008, -0/+4Actually, Novell has started a lawsuit against MS since then. So much for being MS's little buddy. This gets no press tho. This link is old.
blue-gnu.biz/content/exclusionary_agreement_grievance_gets_airing_novell_microsoft_suit - superppl, on 06/19/2008, -1/+5nxxm is absolutely correct.
You should have linked us to http://software.opensuse.org/, and from there we could choose to take a torrent. - druakara, on 06/19/2008, -2/+6It's been a while since I tried Ubuntu (late 2004 early 2005?) (I prefer pure Debian, or Slackware) - but when I used it, it lacked considerably in the ability properly administrate and or customize the system. It was great as a learning tool, but once you've begun to understand how Linux, it's time to step up to a full distribution.
Of course, if your just looking for an easy to use free alternative to windows, it's great, but I'm personally more interested in the power of Linux, rather than the general use OS. - inactive, on 06/20/2008, -0/+3Novell - like Microsoft, except even less cool.
- headshot1485, on 06/20/2008, -0/+3I actually like SuSE much more than ubuntu, can't wait for my dl to finish.
- SteveMax, on 06/20/2008, -0/+3Suse's KDE4 implementation is years ahead of Ubuntu's. Really, it's much faster, better organized, looks better, more stable, etc. Those who installed the Kubuntu "KDE4 remix" and used that to criticize KDE should try OpenSuse; you will be very surprised.
- druakara, on 06/19/2008, -0/+3apt is the greatest! In fact it's so good that this apt has cow powers.
- ianio, on 06/19/2008, -5/+8im getting near 300kb/s from the download site. probably nearer 500 from the torrents?
i cant wait any longer. download damn-you!!!!!
- mrsteveman1, on 06/20/2008, -2/+5Yea, purists like to complain about things the majority of users don't care about.
The reality is Microsoft has a lot of money and what Novell did was probably the cheaper option for the moment, instead of starting a huge lawsuit or forcing the patents to be examined (which should be done anyway). And anyway Novell contributes a LOT to the community, especially the kernel and various important projects, so i won't give up on them just yet :D - ilgaz, on 06/19/2008, -11/+14MS?
- inactive, on 06/20/2008, -0/+3not as quirky as ubuntu
makes you 'think linux' (man pages yo)
better GUI (hard for me to say this as a minimalist, but it is)
more scalable
better planned - silviumc, on 06/20/2008, -0/+3ATI has a SUSE repository with the drivers. It does work. You add the repository from YaST community repositories list and install 2 packages.
Then, to activate 3D, do this as root in a virtual text console (get there with Ctrl+Alt+F1):
init 3
sax2 -r 0=fglrx - blakejohnson86, on 06/19/2008, -0/+3It's not included when you install it, but it's available on the build service. It comes with Beta 5.
- Dohko_Xar, on 06/19/2008, -1/+4Will this work out from the box for my eeePC?
- roasted, on 06/19/2008, -0/+3I'd say it's all preference.
One of the dev's posted a comparison that's pretty good (except for the conclusion :P ) and lays out the differences rather nicely.
http://www.benkevan.com/blog/opensuse-11-the-perfe ... - inactive, on 06/20/2008, -0/+3i have one thing to say. 2.6.25.
the kernel move from 2.6.24 to 2.6.25 dealt a whole new slew of problems and breakage on peoples hardware. i cant say i was one of them since i stopped using linux a while ago but i can assure that many people switched from rolling distros like Arch to BSD or had to downgrade their kernel just to keep their ***** working.
BSD is more rigorously tested and runs simpler. It doesnt have messy System V init scripts and its overall design just feels more clean and correct. - insertAliasHere, on 06/19/2008, -1/+4The link that your dumb ass posted is draining opensuse.org's bandwith. A link to the page with the torrents and mirrors wouldn't have the same impact as hotlinking a 5GB dvd image.
- cquilliam, on 06/20/2008, -0/+2The net install option has been around for a long time, its just always been buried in the mirrors and not advertised much. The biggest difference i noticed with this "NET" release and the prior net iso's is that this one is way more user friendly, you actually get a nice graphical installer, and you don't need another computer (or write it down prior to installing) to find the exact website and subdirectory where the distribution exists. Nice touch!
- nailer, on 06/20/2008, -0/+2InorganicMatter: Red Hat works seamlessly with Active Directory.
- pam_krb5 fetches a TGT from the AD KC
- nsswitch uses LDAP for user and group info
- Firefox, Evolution, Subversion, and just about every other Kerberos enabled app logs in by silently fetching a session ticket from AD
The Kerberos in RHEL 4 supports KErberos over TCP (in beta when AD was introduced) and other Kerberos extension used by Microsoft.
Win2K3R2 and Win2K8 have the necessary AD schema for Unix objects.
You can also use Win2K3 or Win2K with SFU for the required schema extension.
All you have to do is click System -> Administration -> Authentication. - druakara, on 06/19/2008, -1/+3Yet Another System Tool - I will never understand why everything UNIX related uses acronyms for names, even worse are the recursive acronyms, GNU - GNU's Not Unix, GNU's Not Unix Not Unix, GNU's Not Unix Not Unix Not Unix...∞
- 4321234, on 06/19/2008, -3/+5If you like gnome, stick with ubuntu - if you like kde, you should definitely try suse.
- darkchild, on 06/19/2008, -0/+2Right click on an empty space on the panel -> Add to Panel -> Menu Bar. To remove the SLAB menu, just right click on it and choose the option to remove it from the panel. When I use GNOME, I prefer the menu labelled Traditional GNOME Menu.
- 4321234, on 06/19/2008, -0/+2a hat.....right?
