- apokryphos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+20One small note: GNOME 2.20 final isn't available in this release (missed the deadline), but a very near version of it is. RC2 will see the complete GNOME 2.20 in. Stay tuned to http://news.opensuse.org for more info.
- Dhalgren, on 10/10/2007, -0/+19Looking good. I'd say that OpenSUSE is the only thing out there right now that can give Ubuntu a run for it's money...
- jshabad00, on 10/10/2007, -1/+20Enough with the "it looks great" comments... the only thing that matters is has package management system finally been fixed???
- Waterrat, on 10/10/2007, -2/+19Looks really professional...Nice job.
- Waterrat, on 10/10/2007, -4/+21 And you Ubuntu fanboys wonder why you are so annoying to everyone else?
- apokryphos, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16I guess you must be including those hundreds of Linux developers who are developing all those applications/software (KDE, GNOME, X.org, Kernel, ALSA, GCC, Mono, OpenOffice.org) which you are happily using, right? Ok.
- amfantasy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14really loving the green, and the speed improvements
- apokryphos, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13The relation is that 98% of people in the Linux community refer to the whole operating system as "Linux" (whether you like that or not).
I'm interested in hearing why you think people who like the kernel shouldn't use SUSE (there are several kernel developers at SUSE). They have a stricter policy than most (i.e. Ubuntu, Mandriva) about binary blobs in the kernel, and they respect the wishes of kernel hackers. Care to share? - metalhead3767, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Can't wait for the final version of 10.3. Just a few more weeks. Anyone got a link to whats been changed or added in this version?
- majinboy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10And why not? I agree that what corporate Novell did in regards to Linux was questionable, but openSUSE is one kick-ass distro. Heck I'd even say that it is easier to setup and use than Ubuntu for both new users and experienced hands.
This is coming from a Gentoo user. - apokryphos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Yes! http://news.opensuse.org/?p=153
- schestowitz, on 10/10/2007, -16/+25It's probably the best Linux distribution out there (for new and experienced Linux user), but it still helps a harmful Novell. It's surprising that OpenSUSE is not being forked or branched.
- sukimashita, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8http://jimmac.musichall.cz/ he prolly sux. /sarcasm
- apokryphos, on 10/10/2007, -7/+15I've said it before and I'll say it again: can you please not troll, Roy?
- sukimashita, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Not just Kernel developers at SuSE... SuSE's contribution to the Linux community is huge.
- phantomex, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Speed improvements is good news. :)
- apokryphos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7This specific RC or 10.3 in general? For just RC1 see the above link.

* more to be announced soon (add http://news.opensuse.org to your feed to keep up-to-date) - daPhoenix, on 10/10/2007, -5/+11Nownow Roy, instead of trolling Digg all day long you should just go and spend that time to learn how to make web sites.
- OpenFuture, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I can't wait either, im just counting down the days until it goes gold.
- DiggerT, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6yes can be done through yast/zypp or any other good package management tool.
- PopcornDave, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6it's about time. I never had problems in pre 10.x releases. I even had it set to check every night for updates and automatically install. Hopefully the new version has that again. And if it crashed, there didn't seem to be a way to get it started again unless you rebooted.
With ZMD now under 10.2 sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Not a way to convince people to use your distro.
That said, I'm looking forward to seeing it as a gold release. - apokryphos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5You were probably just taken away (like 95% of the OSS community) by negative headlines made by completely unsubstantiated claims. Novell/SUSE are completely dedicated to open source, and are pushing for the Linux desktop more than any other company in the world. See http://opensuse.org/FAQ:Novell-MS for more information.
- kettlechips, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6The best improvement is you can now install from a single CD.
- dmadip, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Someone please tell me why Linux GUIs try to be like Windows. Windows sux! Be creative and redefine the interface. Nobody ever asked for a stable version of Windows from Linux. This crap is boring. Change the interface and make people want to change from Windows and use it.
- AnarkeIncarnate, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I tried Ubuntu a few times. SUSE is easier and better
- apokryphos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4> Quite honestly, Red Hat, Canonical, and Mandriva have given more to FLOSS than Novell has ever done.
Red Hat is arguable. Canonical, Mandriva? You have got to be kidding. Do you eve know anything about the size of SUSE? SUSE/Novell have HUNDREDS of Linux engineers working constantly to improve the Linux desktop (something Red Hat doesn't take seriously).
Canonical and Mandriva are a pretty small fish in comparison to the likes of Red Hat and Novell.
SUSE didn't "suddenly stop" contributing greatly to OSS when they made the deal -- they have more Linux engineers now then ever. The deal has been extremely profitable for all of Linux. Red Hat and other Linux companies are doing great, and Novell certainly is -- more engineers, more copies of SLED being sold, more money, and stocks are doing great.
> Right now calling me a thief and a criminal and saying that I need "protection" is crap, and I don't wish to, nor will, put up with that.
*Please* don't give me that. Novell couldn't have made it any clearer than have made 100 statements _all the time_ emphasising that LINUX DOES NOT INFRINGE ON MS PATENTS. Look at the contract, in fact -- it says this explicitly.
Just read http://opensuse.org/FAQ:Novell-MS - kahrn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Just a question: Is it safe to trust openSuse now? I'm not sure about all the legal crap that they did with Microsoft and am wary. Can someone please detail me on this?
- apokryphos, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5openSUSE and Ubuntu are different in that openSUSE (and SUSE in general) is a distribution that drives _innovation_ on the Linux desktop, whereas Ubuntu is pretty much just a packaging distribution (re-packaging Debian) and adding one or two small things.
See this post http://digg.com/linux_unix/Announcing_openSUSE_10_ ... to see what is new in this openSUSE version. No "small changes", as you'll notice. And none of this is stopping -- in 11.0 openSUSE will probably contain KDE 4, a YaST that is ported to Qt+ 4 (looking something like this: http://en.opensuse.org/Image:Os103-installer-mocku ... ) among many other things.
I also prefer the openSUSE community, which isn't completely run and dominated by hype (which can get tiring). More mellow, yet there are many technically great people to help with problems.
openSUSE is also quite a bit more dedicated to free and open source software with their infrastructure. Where Ubuntu has proprietary Launchpad for nearly _all_ their web-based things, openSUSE have GPLd their amazing openSUSE Build Service , and pretty much all their other software. They also don't think about shipping binary blobs in the kernel: they respect the wishes of the kernel hackers.
This is just tipping the iceberg really. Join the community and you can find out more :-) - Ademan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Is it bad the first thing that popped into my mind when you said good news was professor huber j. farnsworth?
- cwcentral, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Looking pretty good.
I have to admit, the only thing Ubuntu has over openSuSE is 'apt', though 'yum' is getting there. Otherwise, Ubuntu is great for ex-win98 users where as openSuSE is great for developers. Now for ex-vista/ex-XP users, it's a toss up (for development I use openSuSE, for demos, I use Ubuntu). - foreplay, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3the new open source ati drivers are going to be made by novell to start with.
- keyo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Look at the crappy old menu they have. Suse has the proper kickoff novell made.
I think I'll stick to the kde sides of openSuse ubuntu and fedora. - apokryphos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2...that more info: http://digg.com/linux_unix/Sneak_Peeks_at_openSUSE ... :-)
- JoeRockEHF, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2This is really looking sweet. It may be time to finally jump off the Windows ship.
- kahrn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2hmm. Thanks for clearing that up for me. It looks like Suse could be an option again for me.
- AnarkeIncarnate, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2that is why it is not a release. It is a release candidate. They have a few more to go until they can squash all the major annoying bugs
- RealityBender, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Really noting, they are both Linux distribution after all.
- apokryphos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1"In bed with MS" is just a typical example of a baseless emotive statement that produces a negative headline and has no grounding. When does a deal that benefits Novell (and Linux) suddenly become "jumping into bed with them"? Come on.
See the FAQ linked to above, it should clarify all fears about the deal. - apokryphos, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2openSUSE have an extensive usability lab. They don't "try to be like windows", but they use the results of the survey to determine how the interface will be implemented. If this means that they have some things in common with Windows, then who cares? It's a little silly to do something wrong just because Windows did it the same way. Obviously where Windows get it wrong though they'll diverge.
- hordak, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yep, I've been wondering the same thing. Even if I forget 95% of the headlines, at the end of the day, Novell is still in bed with Microsoft. Is this not the case anymore?
- AnarkeIncarnate, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1with the right repos installed, SUSE is just as easy to use as Ubuntu.
- weizbox, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1oh nice... it looks... the same. I just really hope they remove or heavily modify that whole Yast system. its just a real pain to work with. The idea is good.. but it needs to be streamlined and operate more smooth. I do have faith in them.. just might take a few more revisions. On lower end computer it lags up all the time (low end being a 1.8GHz intel with 1MB ram).... which should be working much more smooth.
- Magadass, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I disagree, PCLinuxOS is quit possibly one of the best distros I have ever used. Not to mention it detected all my hardware on every single machine I own, it's the only distro I have that would even get past the boot screen on my main machine. Ubuntu locks up every single time, not sure why tried everything. But in any case openSuse looks sexy, I will give it a try and see how it goes...
- AnarkeIncarnate, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1what? I can do damn what I please in OpenSUSE.
- Magadass, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Who cares?
- penguincentral, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Hmph. The kicker looks nice. Don't like downloading DVD ISOs (only have 12GB per month to download with), but one to maybe buy a DVD of down the track...
- penguincentral, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Leave us fanboys alone >:o
- penguincentral, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yeah, but ubuntu is a cd, compared to SUSE's DVD
- penguincentral, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1nah, it looks interesting
- oobuntu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+110.3 RC1 KDE livecd does not boot on my Dell 640m Inspiron. After probing modules, it states "No cd drive detected" - some acpi issue? Does anyone know what boot options are required to fix? opensuse bugzilla isn't very searchable.
