- captainmagnus, on 10/10/2007, -7/+38This is truly the best release ever! GO openSUSE!
- Shadoglare, on 10/10/2007, -6/+30Regardless of the Novell/MS partnering (which, from what I've seen, has had no effect on the project aside from being able to include some small bits of proprietary code like Windows fonts), OpenSUSE is one of the best, and definitely the most stable, distros I have used. I have had a few gripes such as with software management, and it looks like that's been corrected with this release as well... can't wait to have it loaded!
- swims, on 10/10/2007, -4/+25Congratulations to everyone who contributed to openSUSE 10.3!
- apokryphos, on 10/10/2007, -4/+23This is a really great release. There's so much innovative stuff (1-click install, super-fast boot time) that it's really hard to keep track of. Plus it's stable, secure, and has all the latest free and open source software (including parts of KDE 4) done with the typical SUSE polish. Really great release!
- mburgoon, on 10/10/2007, -5/+24I just install 10.2 yesterday! Dang....
As a long time Ubuntu user... my first impression of openSuse is that it is an extremely stable and easy to manage distro. - smithpcrepair, on 10/10/2007, -6/+23This is the distro I've been dying to put on my wife's lappy. The interface is very professional and always polished. The package management is better (rough ride from version 10 to 10.2). Also, the integration of compiz fusion with the annotation capabilities caught my eye. Great Job openSUSE devs.
- apokryphos, on 10/10/2007, -2/+19Please don't troll, thank you.
- apokryphos, on 10/10/2007, -2/+18Are you serious? You're saying Ubuntu users should consider SUSE (another Linux distribution; another free and open source software) project instead of trying to compete with Windows or Mac OS X? (the proprietary guys). Come on! We're all friends trying to get the Linux _desktop_ to succeed. Petty squabbling like yours doesn't help any of us.
- FunkyPenguin, on 10/10/2007, -6/+20This release is brilliant, and proves how dedicated the openSUSE and Novell guys and girls are to this wondrous distro. It seems as if the community has grown stronger with more resolve to prove all the disbelievers that regardless of the business politics of Novell, openSUSE is _THE_ linux distro :)
- DiggerT, on 10/10/2007, -4/+18OpenSuse is one of the best linux distro's out there and definitely the most polished.
- apokryphos, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13Sorry, but you obviously need to get a clue. It is not only a Linux distribution, it is one that is contributing to the linux DESKTOP more than any distribution and company in the world. SUSE employ more developers to work on the Linux _desktop_ than anyone else, they pipe huge efforts into it and they're one of the only companies taking it seriously.
- kahrn, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13You're a dumbass. Perhaps you could go out and read the facts before trolling like a 10 year old.
- apokryphos, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14Could you be any more ignorant? Why don't you just troll somewhere else in the privacy of your home?
For one, you'd be "leeching bandwidth" from free and open source software mirrors. At times of high loads redirectors always spread the load to the mirrors. Google to find out which ones they are; they provide software for all open source software.
Oh, and also just please read: http://opensuse.org/FAQ:Novell-MS - apokryphos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12The only poisonous ( http://www.oreillynet.com/conferences/blog/2006/07 ... ) people are the ones who try to split up the open source community by posting BASELESS negative headlines constantly. That site is written by OPENSUSE users, not Novell. You shouldn't be afraid of reading it, and you can easily verify its truth.
Novell/SUSE are the greatest company in the world in terms of contributing to the Linux desktop, so I applaud them for their great efforts, and constantly making so many projects in OSS possible. Hint: like the desktop environment you're using. - InsaneMachine, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Well, because it is Linux, free, and a great distribution in general. It is also relatively easy to use, since there is a GUI for most of the stuff. Unless you really need a windows specific app(s), like games or photoshop, there is no real reason not to use it except laziness. There are alternatives to photoshop(or at worst can run it in Wine or dual boot). Some games work with cedega, although I really only need it for EVE.
And for my final bit, you can always dual boot for curiosity. - javipas, on 10/10/2007, -6/+17Downloads now available! (HTTP/FTP/BitTorrent) from http://software.opensuse.org/
- sukimashita, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13Dear Linux users. For all those "I am against openSUSE because Novell does love to Microsoft". Please mind that the SUSE guys (since a long time) contribute to (loads of) your "Linux" projects. Whatever distribution you are using. Whatever deal Novell has sealed. They are huge contributers and openSUSE is a very professional, serious and advanced distribution free of that "bad proprietary evil" you are trying to tell everyone it would have.
- apokryphos, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12Are you serious? You're saying Ubuntu users should consider SUSE (another Linux distribution; another free and open source software) project instead of trying to compete with Windows or Mac OS X? (the proprietary guys). Come on! We're all friends trying to get the Linux _desktop_ to succeed. Petty squabbling like yours doesn't help any of us.
- apokryphos, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11A deal involving money doesn't need to necessitate selling out, in fact it's the exact opposite here. Read: http://opensuse.org/FAQ:Novell-MS Novell/SUSE is dedicating more to the Linux desktop than any other company in the world.
- apokryphos, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11No, it's a TROLL. Look up the definition. This is an announcement story about an openSUSE RELEASE, which is of course celebratory by nature. Instead you are just trolling. Post in another story for all you like, but there's no need to troll. Even if there's a cause worth fighting for in your opinion (even if I think you've got things completely wrong), you should definitely do it but in the appropriate place.
Otherwise you're just clearly being disrespectful to other communities. - AnarkeIncarnate, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12well, Novell are writing them as we speak
- AnarkeIncarnate, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1210.3 is supposed to be better. I am DLing it now
- drewskyjones, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1310.2 has been great...can't wait to upgrade to 10.3...One click install should make it even easier to add new apps. OpenSUSE, FTW!
- chedabob, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Every single time a release of openSuse comes out, I really like the look of it, but I just can't use it. For 10.2, I couldn't get NTFS support. For 10.3, I'm still waiting on some drivers for my graphics card (X1950 pro).
- stmiller, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Yes, let's blame Suse for not making ATI graphics drivers for a brand new card. Might as well blame Apple for not making good Nvidia drivers while we are at it.
- timf, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12I'm using Ubuntu since they released the first beta of it but you really have to give credit to the OpenSuse guys for the incredible polish. Easily the most beautiful default desktop in my opinion.
- AnarkeIncarnate, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10It is a VERY fast, stable OS that has a lot more included by default (though you have the option of not installing it). You get multiple graphical environments, multiple text editors and Office software, a package manager to update and install all this software in one location. The package manager is part of an overall graphical front end for configuration that makes control panel look week and hard to use, by comparison. Plus, if you were to be so inclined, the back end command line makes doing many things so much faster than the pointy-clicky method.
Oh, and it is free, with support from an active community. Bugs are squashed as soon as they can be, in most cases. You are at liberty to fix them yourself, or have any number of other people do it for you. You get all your updates this way, anything from your web browser to the kernel, the very heart of the OS itself, can be updated from the same place (and the only thing that requires you to reboot are major major MAJOR updates like the kernel, and few others. - apokryphos, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12Who cares if MS make threats to Linux? They've been spreading FUD about Linux for years. Instead Novell/SUSE are taking the Linux desktop more seriously than any other company in the world (in terms of contributing). The MS-Novell deal does anything BUT threaten Linux, that's just a myth that a few trolls want you to believe. Take a look at http://opensuse.org/FAQ:Novell-MS
- oobuntu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8did you report the bugs?
- AnarkeIncarnate, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11troll elsewhere. It is NOT tainted. YOU are a moron
- sukimashita, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Every distro puts stuff somewhere else or has a different init system/configuration etc. There is always a learning curve switching. However, openSUSE appears really polished and especially professional.
- bigtomrodney, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Try and torrent if you can people. Save the servers, share the wealth.
- apokryphos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Hah. You're actually downloading from a mirror that hosts all sorts of free and open source software. You're not harming Novell, you're harming servers that are dedicated to hosting free and OSS software. Also read http://opensuse.org/FAQ:Novell-MS
- Irco, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8stability, security, performance ?....of course that might mean nothing to you since you seem pretty content with vista, but I am using it right now and is just not a good OS. I've been trying every beta version of openSuse, and it's a real competitor for ubuntu. As unbelievable as it might sound, the installation was actually easier than ubuntu's, in my opinion.
- AnarkeIncarnate, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7grow up and get out of your mother's basement
- apokryphos, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Can you name a single community GNOME-based distribution (no, openSUSE has no default DE) that doesn't have Mono in by default? I will give you a clue: there isn't one. Relax. Read: http://opensuse.org/FAQ:Novell-MS
Given "a lot to the community" is a huge understatement. And it's Novell/SUSE that have given it back to the community, not just openSUSE. Novell/SUSE employ more developers to work on the Linux desktop than any other company in the world. Nice of them to pay people to work on the software that you're happily using, isn't it? - falstaff, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Comment 1: I hate Novell = buried.
Reply: I hate Novell and Bush = dugg.
You just have to know the Digg rules to get a thumbs up. - kahrn, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Why are people digging this guy down? He asked a perfectly valid question.
- apokryphos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5It is: http://news.opensuse.org/?p=153
- AnarkeIncarnate, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5from incoming accounts, significantly faster (for the package manager portion). Yast is more than just packaging, though. It is a total control center.
- bmorency, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6does anyone know if their cd/dvd is also a live cd like ubuntu so I can give it a try? I would like to try it because suse has never been able to boot my computer for some reason.
- apokryphos, on 10/10/2007, -4/+9A deal doesn't have to include "selling out" just because it involves money. Please just read: http://opensuse.org/FAQ:Novell-MS
- chedabob, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7But it shouldn't be up to open-source developers to provide drivers for a new card. Phoronix confirmed the existence of the driver months ago, yet 3 driver releases have passed since the card came out, and still no support for it. As far as I know, it's the only card that the fglrx driver doesn't currently support.
- ryanlive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Novell creates opensource code all the time. Including the new ATI drivers you desperately need.
- NJHewitt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Yeah, that stuff is all true! I installed the new openSUSE and know what happened? SPACE AND TIME CRACKED APART AND MICROSOFT DEMONS STOLE MY SOUL.
Still, until the demons, it seemed like I was running a really neat distro, from a community who give a huge amount to Linux.... - Feanor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4The Boot time is GREATLY improved. 10.2 boot time was about 3-5 minutes usually. Now I login in under 2.
- bigtomrodney, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I have never known anyone with long term Linux support to actively choose PCLinuxOS over another distro. It's no more than another derivative bringing nothing more to the table. You can't say that about SUSE.
- JoeRockEHF, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Looks beautiful and really polished, can't wait to try!
- Ademan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Anyone know what the gtk+ theme is used in the gnome screenshots? I like it a lot...
- AnarkeIncarnate, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5know what is one of the best things about the upgrade? It is free :)
