- darkchild, on 03/01/2008, -1/+205Nice to see Amazon taking Linux seriously and making it easy for Linux users to access their services (unlike some company named after a fruit).
- shizeon, on 03/01/2008, -1/+96This has to make Amazon the #1 source for "legal" music for linux users. Is there anything else better?
- ripdog, on 03/01/2008, -4/+65Potential Spyware? *chokes with laughter*
Someone's been smoking too much Windows. - inactive, on 03/01/2008, -1/+60How do you like them apples, Apple?
- ropers, on 03/01/2008, -6/+55"Please note that Amazon MP3 is currently only available to US customers."
Pffft. So feck off then. - inactive, on 03/01/2008, -0/+38Pity Amazon's Mp3 music store doesn't work in Australia
- Kr0ntab, on 03/01/2008, -1/+31Amazon has really stepped up their game with this offering. I've been waiting for this for months. I showed my support by purchasing my first album using the service. They are simply the best service in town. Justathought, I understand what you are worried about, but this is not spyware, and the application is actually very simple and clean. More importantly, this is yet another great reason more people can start using Linux.
- RadonPL, on 03/01/2008, -2/+31Magnatune is integrated to Amarok already. They have a lot of interesting albums, many songs are in loss-free flac format.
- Daniel591992, on 03/01/2008, -3/+27Hopefully this encourages Apple to make a Linux iTunes :D
- GIFF3, on 03/01/2008, -0/+23It's good to see someone finally doing things right. drm free, linux support, etc etc.
- MontyPython, on 03/01/2008, -0/+23Just imagine how amazing it would be if Amazon and Amarok were somehow integrated into each other. I would be all over that
- jamesrdorn, on 03/01/2008, -1/+23Can I reply to my own comment?

this app will download the 32bit libs for the apps. - Bamborzled, on 03/01/2008, -1/+21It's unfortunate that if Apple really tried to make a Linux iTunes, it would probably suck like the Windows iTunes.
- Splinterx, on 03/01/2008, -0/+18This is a brilliant piece of software and the development model should be used by all other companies producing software for linux. It uses the GTK toolkit and uses appropriate installers. Brilliant.
- mrsteveman1, on 03/01/2008, -1/+19Because deb is a package format, the program is binary.
- inactive, on 03/01/2008, -1/+18Don't laugh, he actually went through all the sourcecode of his system. His brain did not like that.
- RobotBuddha, on 03/01/2008, -0/+15Meh, any halfway competent developer can get something compatible with all the major distros pretty quickly.
- djbon2112, on 03/01/2008, -0/+15"2 incompatible package formats"
sudo alien source.rpm -> result.deb
"3 WMs"
Which has no effect on the operation of the program unless it uses specific UI system calls. I.E. not a problem if iTunes is designed properly (and I doubt that).
" 7+ desktop distros all redundant"
They're not redundant, each has its benefits and its drawbacks. No different than trying to decide between Vista Home Premium and Vista Business.
Keep your ignorance to yourself, please. - djbon2112, on 03/01/2008, -0/+15The chicken and the egg must be broken at some point, and the best side to do that is application developers.
- Scyth3, on 03/01/2008, -1/+15Logged in just to digg this up. Thank you Amazon! [Some of us legally download now for reasons such as jobs]
- theantix, on 03/01/2008, -0/+13They don't need to be redownloadable because they aren't proprietary DRM *****, so you can back them up like any other file and restore them after a problem.
As it should be. - inactive, on 03/01/2008, -3/+16Ha ha ha!
- Commodore13, on 03/01/2008, -0/+13It's good that more and more applications are rolling out Linux support, and taking the OS's seriously. I hope this is just the beginning of this trend.
- nandasunu, on 03/01/2008, -1/+14it lets you resume downloads so if the connection is lost, you can re-download without paying again.
- kazamx, on 03/01/2008, -0/+12But having it, is one less reason not to switch.
Wireless is almost fixed, graphics cards are almost fixed. Photoshop is almost ported (via wine (thanks Google)). The only thing we really lack now is main stream games, the Wine people are working hard on that too.
Even without much Big Company support Linux is getting more viable every day. Now imagine what happens when we add big company support. - dontaskagain, on 03/01/2008, -0/+12God forbid anyone at Amazon learn about your Rick Astley fetish eh?
- bdptcob, on 03/01/2008, -1/+13And you know this because......? You have stats to back this up or are you just spreading garbage? I use linux exclusively and I've been downloading music from amazon for the past few months. Before that I subscribed to emusic. Before that I bought cd's. In other words, don't be a tool.
- troye, on 03/01/2008, -0/+11It's a lot of politics and bureaucratics.
- andrewtheart, on 03/01/2008, -2/+13I'd say CD's are still way up there in terms of legal music.
- caish5, on 03/01/2008, -1/+12Why do all the cool services only work in the US. It's not as if bittorrent has borders!
- schotty, on 03/01/2008, -0/+11Yes there is. Realize that Ubuntu has been gaining steam lately, as is the target market of the Wal Mart Linspire/GOS computers. Really, non-techies dont care about DRM till it screws them over (sad reality Deny/Allow).
- Scatropolis, on 03/01/2008, -1/+12Oh wise troye, please show me the way of true enlightenment through non-mainstream music.
brother - freexe, on 03/01/2008, -0/+11eMusic is cheaper but is lacking in pop music, but has loads of indie stuff that I mostly want anyway. I'm sure I'll use both when Amazon opens up to the rest of the world.
- clgonsal, on 03/01/2008, -0/+11Why does Amazon require a special program to download albums in the first place? Why not just let people download a zip file (or archive format of your choice) containing all of the songs in the album?
- schotty, on 03/01/2008, -2/+12Speaking from personal knowledge, the Mac version aint much better. Still slow, crashy, and overall just bloated.
- Kr0ntab, on 03/01/2008, -0/+10Hehe... they simply chose the most popular format to reach market, although I'm certain you know that already. The most important thing is that it includes no DRM, so you may do what you want with it after you download. e.g. oggenc. :-)
- MWeather, on 03/02/2008, -0/+10No, ogg is vorbis. MP3 is lame.
- Kr0ntab, on 03/01/2008, -0/+10For many, purchasing music is THE most important element of their selective computing routine. So when a mainstream site like Amazon with their massive selection offers content across all platforms and that rivals, if not exceeds, the services of iTunes, it's a big deal.
- Breepee, on 03/01/2008, -0/+9Apple can just put up a custom installer (like nvidia does) and require for example GTK or QT, just like they require specific verions of Windows. That's not going to be a problem.
Bring on the LiTunes. - itsupportnotes, on 03/01/2008, -0/+9Go Amazon! Great to see a big player offering a helping hand to linux.
- malcam, on 03/01/2008, -0/+9To me at least, Linux is about freedom to do what you want, nothing to do with the actual cost.
- jamesrdorn, on 03/01/2008, -0/+9256kbps, no
- Snakedal337, on 03/01/2008, -2/+11My god did everyone miss /s?.... My whole collection is mp3s. Tough crowd.
- adml_shake, on 03/01/2008, -2/+11One step at a time man...
- bdbr, on 03/01/2008, -1/+9They're coming; its already been announced. Its just a matter of time. Keep in mind, the music labels make it a real pain in the ass to sell music internationally.
- ben_nushmut, on 03/01/2008, -2/+10Something you download legally. Kinda self-explanatory, even if you've never tried it before.
- Akuma66, on 03/01/2008, -0/+8Very much dugg, bring this UK side asap!
- FreakyT, on 03/01/2008, -2/+9But realistically, though, do you really think the iTunes store would get any business from Linux users? I mean is there really even a market among Linux users for DRM'd tracks?
- manitoba98xp, on 03/01/2008, -0/+7You could always continue to download them one-by-one as before the downloader for Linux was released, or you could run it as another non-privileged user, etc.
