- Skaidon, on 05/25/2008, -2/+36Polish Linux do some of the best visual reviews ever, hell the best for Linux!!! :)
- fatas, on 05/25/2008, -2/+25Poles putting screenshots back into Linux.
- jasmus, on 05/25/2008, -2/+22buried for timbaland...
kidding, I didn't bury, but I had to force myself not to. - matx, on 05/25/2008, -1/+20I hope I can still use an external database. I currently using mysql database on a remote server. It handy to use as I can point amarok from all my machines to the database so they will all be in sync. I didn't see any problem with this when it takes a fraction of a second to query a database these days which, isn't noticeable by me.
- schestowitz, on 05/25/2008, -4/+20Polish. Linux. Nice.
- arjie, on 05/25/2008, -2/+18Too knee-jerk estvir, Redmond is a theme for KDE that mimics the old Windows look and feel. You know, the one with the cube '3d' buttons.
- pixeleyes, on 05/25/2008, -0/+12I have to admit, I am sadly proud of my database, with its view counts and ratings. As long as I can keep these when it comes to A2 I will be happy.
The new gui looks nice, but I think I will miss Amarok1s approach of having nothing but songs on the screen, I don't need large fancy play buttons. It also appears they have done away with the filter bar along the top. This is one feature I don' think I could live without, the fact I could just type in an artist and Amarok would play only songs by that artist was brilliant, coupled with the track queuing feature it has everything I could ever want.
Having played with the alpha a bit (Using Project Neon, for anyone running Kubuntu, the nightly build service called Neon is brilliant.http://amarok.kde.org/en/node/482), I think I will be staying with Amarok1 for the time being, maybe wait till Amarok2.1, just like how I am sticking with KDE3 till KDE4. - nhnFreespirit, on 05/25/2008, -1/+11The issue with supporting multiple databases is mainly one of development overhead. Because we use some very specialized queries that are often dynamically generated, we have yet to find an abstraction layer that was up to the task. This means that for each different database, we currently have to add custom code all over the place. Not fun!
What we are currently investigating for Amarok 2, is the upcomming version of MySQL Embedded. The main advantage of this is that it will, per default, run a config free local database, much like the current sqlite, but can, with no changes to the code, be reconfigured to connect to an external server. This will allow "normal users" to just use Amarok without ever having to worry about this stuff, while more advanced users can hook it up to their existing db setup. And we keep the internal code clean of "if this_db add special_hack" stuff. - iRelinquish, on 05/25/2008, -8/+18its sure better than redmond!
- ppvanzella, on 05/25/2008, -0/+9It may be an overkill for small music libraries, but it REALLY helps when dealing with aweful lots of music.
For anything under 5000 songs I guess SQLite should be alright, but for over that, having the ability to use MySQL or Pg is important to speed things up. - thevoiceless, on 05/26/2008, -1/+7Am I the only one who thinks this looks ugly? And there's so much wasted space!
- localzuk, on 05/25/2008, -1/+7Lol, no back fire there estvir - a bit of research about KDE would have revealed what redmond is...
- patpi, on 05/25/2008, -2/+8you can download new themes in 4 clicks straight from the KDE4 desktop. :)
- roninn23, on 05/25/2008, -2/+7Mirror from Google cache:

- sfury, on 05/26/2008, -0/+4you're not alone, but the guys said they're changing the looks in every version, so hopefully thing will be much better in the final 2.0
- Royall, on 05/25/2008, -0/+4Amarok is simply different from Winamp. VLC and mplayer do Winamp's job very well, though.
- Darkhacker, on 05/25/2008, -2/+5If you have to have special hacks, then you're doing it wrong. Qt includes the ability to connect to multiple databases very seamlessly.
http://doc.trolltech.com/4.4/sql-driver.html#suppo ... - inactive, on 05/26/2008, -0/+3I love VLC and it's ability to play my modules (via libmodplug) but this thing does look pretty damn cool, you have to admit.
- matx, on 05/25/2008, -1/+4From what I see, they look like drivers. You would still need to write the queries for mysql, postgresql and sqlite. They can be slightly different in structure.
A common interface would be needed so a query from amarok would be converted automatically for the appropriate database. This also starts to get tricky when your supporting a built in database that may not even use sql style code. - matdevdug, on 05/25/2008, -3/+6I love open-source software. I mean I am a huge fan of iTunes but there is something so cool about open-source and being able to find instructions to do anything you could possibly want to do with a piece of software. Personally I can't wait until Linux has the same level of polish as OS X and switch over permanently.
Amarok is pretty awesome too. - inactive, on 05/26/2008, -0/+3Compiz Fusion is pretty amazing in the visuals department. Sure, Linux is not completely smooth, polish wise, but at least you get to see the maximum that can be done with an OS.
- Asrrin29, on 05/26/2008, -1/+4I've been waiting for Amarok to come out on windows without a lot of hassle. I hate itunes being so damn resource intensive, and Songbird won't be out of alpha/beta for quite a while.
- inactive, on 05/25/2008, -1/+4I love these visual changelogs.
- dorkdork777, on 05/25/2008, -0/+3Winamp, Cinema 4D and Photoshop CS2 all have at least a 'Gold' rating for Wine, so they can be run almost perfectly under Linux. CS3 apparently runs well, but it doesn't install, though there are workarounds for that.
See appdb.winehq.org. - inactive, on 05/26/2008, -0/+3I'd prefer it if my visual style looked like Amarok going by those pictures O_O
- thevoiceless, on 05/26/2008, -0/+3GTK-Qt integration is actually being worked on (I forgot the name of the project) but it's still waaayyy in alpha
Edit - Found it, check this out: http://arstechnica.com/journals/linux.ars/2008/05/ ... - sfury, on 05/26/2008, -0/+2Can't wait for that Last.fm integration!
- crazyjake, on 05/26/2008, -0/+2yes, the zune. it is actually shaping out to be a very nice little media player. if M$ would just pimp it out like Aplle does to the Ipod, i would buy a second gen.
- jshabad00, on 05/26/2008, -0/+2Don't give them too much credit for a bunch of screenshots from neon that anyone could have posted... they are a great site, but this isn't.
- inactive, on 05/25/2008, -3/+5Polish linux need to polish their server.
- championchap, on 05/25/2008, -1/+3That's kind of what I hate about winAmp.
To each their own my friend.
Which is kinda why Linux rocks, but nobody really understands it at first.
"EUGH SO MANY DISTROS! WHRYYY!"
If you're prepared to do some testing of different ones, and do some research yourself then you'll find the one that best suits you rather than having to change to suit the OS.
I can understand the problems people have with it though, and again.. to each their own.
If you can't/don't want to do the grunt work and keep trying and researching new things then don't! Stick to Windows or OS X.
Having said all of this, I'm not sure why you felt compelled to give your opinion on Amarok. Sure it's mentioned in the title, and i dont mean to single you out.. but honestly why?
At least you gave reasons though. Bravo sir! - crazyjake, on 05/25/2008, -1/+3I would still like to see native support on linux for the Zune. not a big concern, but would still be nice.
- reldruh, on 05/25/2008, -0/+2The last.fm integration is a _lot_ better in this version. All of the streams you could want (including your friends' streams) are available right from the browser and if you right click on an artist it'll ask if you want to play a last.fm stream featuring similar artists. As for the context view, it's not done yet and still needs some work, but give it a chance. If you don't like it there'll be ways to control and use amarok besides the actual program. There's a plasmoid right now that will give you current information and I hope will get the ability to control it, kind of like the mini player in 1.4
- inactive, on 05/26/2008, -0/+2He's got my digg, and 12 others too... Not everyone hates the default KDE theme, but hell, since some do, let's act like they speak for everyone.
- inactive, on 05/25/2008, -1/+3I recommend foobar2000 if your on windows.
- ner0tic, on 05/25/2008, -0/+2google snagged it:
http://www.google.com/search?q=cache:r-yoJGCXVO8J: ... - yingjai, on 05/26/2008, -0/+1doesn't work for me
- Terr, on 05/25/2008, -6/+7Although I'm still rooting for KDE, I must agree with you. The UI on this screenshot looks awfully messy. I'm guessing it's mainly because of the font.
- Woknblues, on 05/26/2008, -0/+1I don't see any huge sweeping changes here as compared to v. 1.X... Three columns is better than two? I'll have to see for myself I guess. I liked the non cluttered aspect of two columns, and I don't really need to see more plasma applets. OTOH, further integration with lastfm looks enticing. More stable I hope!!
- Acglaphotis, on 05/25/2008, -0/+1Here you go : http://www.linux.com/feed/17909
- Rezistik, on 05/25/2008, -0/+1I singled out amarok because the article reviews amarok 2...
I enjoy linux because it is soo very editable, however with a decent amount of work you can edit windows to fit everything you want. There is a program for it, sure using linux would be easier and use less resources then using multiple programs to emulate features found built into a linux distro but it can be worth it as some programs that I truly need such as photoshop and Cinema 4D are only available within windows (yeah macs are nice but I'm on a fixed budget...)
Yes each his own when it comes to modular nature, however there are other features I prefer over amarok, I consider the library features much stronger in winamp. - phaedrusiszen, on 05/26/2008, -0/+1I don't find it slow and I have a fairly large collection, granted with a MySQL backend.
What I do wish it had was true gapless, but that's from the Xine backend. - Ademan, on 05/26/2008, -0/+1http://audacious-media-player.org/index.php?title= ...
Here you go... - maninalift, on 05/26/2008, -0/+1Links given so far for cached pages aren't properly cached (pages still load content from polishlinux)
- bottlesandcans, on 05/25/2008, -2/+3I wanna put Linux on my Speak and Spell.
- michuk, on 05/26/2008, -0/+1And who calls it a review? It writes "Visual Changelog".
- Hangly, on 05/26/2008, -1/+2While those look nice, I'd prefer it if Amarok had the same visual style as the rest of my desktop.
- inactive, on 05/26/2008, -1/+2You know the type of people who love WMP?
Yeah, well, this is what happened when they switched over to Linux and didn't find anything like it for KDE. :P - se1zure, on 05/26/2008, -2/+3Ewww that looks terrible.
