will remove unused deps - magister, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Ha! That's great.
I always wondered what the line "This APT has Super Cow Powers." meant. - ahawks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Apt is great, so is synaptic, and I'm trying to get the hang of aptitude, but there are still some features of RPM/yum that I have yet to figure out (or until recently).
Primarily. "What package owns file $x?". rpm -qf $x would answer this on redhat/fedora. I recently learned the debian answer is:
dpkg -S $x
I know apt pretty well, it's dpkg I'd like to learn more about. - CypherXero, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I love OpenBSD's package management.
To install a package:
pkg_add package
To remove a package:
pkg_delete package
To list packages:
pkg_info - pr0cty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The past few entries here have been helpful to a certain extent. Good articles arsgeek
- Drakkor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Actually sudo aptitude install whatever, and sudo aptitude remove whatever is better at handling and removing dependencies.....
http://psychocats.net/ubuntu/aptitude.php - intangible, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3sudo aptitude moo
sudo aptitude -v moo
sudo aptitude -vv moo
sudo aptitude -vvv moo
and so on :) - Xilon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My suggestion to you would be to use aptitude instead of apt-get, if oyu install with aptitude and then uninstall then all unused dependancies get uninstalled with it
- nubtard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'd love to be able to limit the bandwidth apt-get uses as I share a dial-up connection with a few people. I love the package management though.
- arsgeek, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Ahh the power of Digg! Thanks to all for the tips and links as well.
I also always wondered about Super Cow Powers.
geek out. - GutterMoo, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6digg + because this made me laugh (moo is my nickname).
- i440, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3But how do you remove a program and all of its unused dependencies? I love unnecessary clutter as much as the next person, but...
- i440, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Thank you all for your assistance. Positive Diggs for each of you! XD
- goodshape, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4yea man, apt.
