- doubad, on 05/22/2009, -0/+20Works great for downloads, now if only it was rigged up to Gmail Notifier.
- umbriago, on 05/22/2009, -0/+12"sexy" notifications? A naked woman better pop up or I better get a husky, breathy message: "Your download's done, tiger. rowr"
- berot3, on 05/22/2009, -1/+10but this is not "Jaunty-only"...
- motang, on 05/22/2009, -0/+9Awesome, make Firefox more integrated into Juanty! Now need to get something like this for Thunderbird! ;)
- CaptObvious, on 05/22/2009, -7/+13Yea, we've had growl for years, thanks.
http://growl.info/ - DontThinkSo, on 05/22/2009, -0/+5I made an IMAP mail notifier screenlet (which is gmail-compatible) that uses Jaunty's notifications. If there's enough interest, I'll upload the code.
- jacked, on 05/22/2009, -0/+5I believe, CaptObvious, that rabidjester's "doofus" remark was referring to diggtochina's comment about mac guys, not to yours. Which might be why hit clicked Reply on diggtochina's msg, and not yours.
- rabidjester, on 05/22/2009, -1/+6Firefox supports growl already, doofus. I noticed the other day that WoW does too when patching, good times.
- dkdevine, on 05/22/2009, -0/+5I had this before Jaunty in my cutting edge Foresight Linux install...it's not Jaunty only.
- saftaplan, on 05/22/2009, -0/+4Your solution is called Mozilla Prism. It's in the Ubuntu repositories, along with some bundles like Facebook and Gmail.
- pklall, on 05/22/2009, -0/+4code or it didn't happen
- Freakwit, on 05/22/2009, -1/+5if you're on that blog, you don't know what jaunty is and clicking on the jaunty link on it doesn't refresh your memory, the blog is not relevant to your interests.
- warp99, on 05/22/2009, -0/+4You can write your own notifications by installing the libnotify-bin package in Ubuntu 9.04, then have it launch in a script or from another app with the message, icon, duration, etc. that you want. Here's an example:
:~$ notify-send "My Notification" "This is the extended message" -u critical -t 30000 -i my_icon.png
- gamepr0, on 05/22/2009, -0/+3LOL buried out of ignorance?
- Stemp, on 05/22/2009, -0/+3http://www.thefreedictionary.com/jaunty
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaunty#Ubuntu_9.04_.2 ... - gamepr0, on 05/22/2009, -1/+4Never heard of growl eh? Fail.
- megaton, on 05/22/2009, -2/+4What I'd like to see are a merging of web apps and extensions and for Firefox to reflect some of the vocabulary of an operating system.
Right now they're each distinct entities. Web apps (i.e. Gmail) are not extensions (i.e. Gmail notifier). Browsers (i.e. Firefox) are not operating systems (i.e. Windows). Yet, we use them in much the same way, and there's this artificial and arbitrary line drawn between the two, which I think is unnecessary.
For example, imagine opening up Gmail. You read a couple messages, and you're done. Instead of closing it (or leaving it open in another tab), you "minimize" it to either a browser-based or OS-based system tray. That tray icon can be dynamically updated by the webapp (Gmail itself), it can push out OS-like notifications, and so forth.
Now, imagine this was done outside of the (apparent) context of the browser. You don't have to open Firefox to get to it, you just open the Gmail webapp. (Which, perhaps, runs within the context of Firefox. But as far as the user is concerned, it may as well be running as a native application.)
Point is, as of now, I have a bit of redundancy while I use my computer. I have 2 "task bars" (1 OS task bar and 1 tab bar in FF), I have multiple "applications" open, etc. Why make the distinction? - thelastknowngod, on 05/23/2009, -0/+2This is great. Dont need ubuntu to use it though. im using it with AwesomeWM on Arch and it works fine.
- Ki77erB, on 05/22/2009, -0/+2Wow, you dont here that too often. Times they are a'changing.
- TodoInTX, on 05/22/2009, -0/+2Simply enable the "New mail notifications" checkbox under your google talk account within Pidgin.
It also notifies when Evolution (not sure about Thunderbird, I'm sure a plugin will be made for it eventually) Either of these could be used to see your Gmail account and notify of messages in your Notification area. - megaton, on 05/22/2009, -0/+2Et voila! Thank you! :)
- Frostek, on 05/22/2009, -0/+2Nice! That will make my scripts seem a bit more professional-looking now! :-)
- linkinpark342, on 05/23/2009, -0/+2roflcopters i'm on the front page.
integration withother notifications is planned but it'd sadly have to be explicitly said by the other add-ons unless some divine revelation hits one of the developers at mozilla and they decide to explain somewhere wtf "scriptable" really means... - rabidjester, on 05/22/2009, -0/+2I was indeed referring to the doofus at the top of the thread. Not really sure on the correct spelling of that one, pretty sure it's the first time I've used the word in about 10 years.
- GavinZac, on 06/08/2009, -0/+1Where does it say only Ubuntu can? It just says that Ubuntu can. It can, right?
- smotpoker, on 05/22/2009, -0/+1The line isn't "artificial" or "arbitrary".*
- CaptObvious, on 05/22/2009, -2/+3Yea, I know that. In fact, it's the other way around, Growl supports Firefox, along with a bunch of other programs, like WoW. Doofus.
- mrBitch, on 05/23/2009, -0/+1Snarl is a VB project inspired by Growl :
http://growl.info/about.php - CaptObvious, on 05/22/2009, -1/+2Could be. Anyway, it doesn't really matter cuz I just wanted to say doofus too, cuz it's a fun word. Doofus.

Wish they would integrate this notification use instead of the lame slide up that's there now. - MonkeyFarts, on 05/23/2009, -1/+2Um, I haven't used an external download manager in nearly a decade. I only used them because I was on dialup and downloads would tend to be regularly interrupted either due to disconnects or due to needing to use the phone, and a download manager allowed interrupted downloads to be continued from where they left off. But these days, why should I use one? With high speed connections and 24/7 connections, they're pretty much pointless. As is your comment, as you clearly don't understand the benefit of notifications like this. If you don't like it, don't utilize it.
- inactive, on 05/23/2009, -1/+2Regardless of a high speed connection, your transfer could be dropped on the other end. External download managers are useful for multiple connections for acceleration of large files. My comment wasn't pointless. I was asking a question, see the questions marks? Your comment is pointless as you say there is a benefit of having some annoying bubble pop up, yet you don't say what the benefit is.
- smotpoker, on 05/22/2009, -1/+2The line is "artificial" or "arbitrary". It is the result of layered/modular development. GUI developers do not want to have to worry about html rendering, OS developers don't cannot be concerned with window-resizing and browser developers cannot be too concerned about the nuances of each OS/GUI it is used on.
- NobodyWhoCares, on 05/22/2009, -2/+3Take a look at Snarl, gives you the same sort of thing but for Windows, and pretty easy to write your own notifications as well.
http://www.fullphat.net/index.php - linkinpark342, on 05/23/2009, -0/+1Nope, i personally like it better with notification-daemon because i added buttons so you can open the file immediately
- clickwir, on 05/22/2009, -1/+2From a pure security standpoint.... I like them different and distinct.
Merging of the OS and Browser was not a good idea from Microsoft.... nor is it ever. - inactive, on 05/22/2009, -2/+3no. i dont pay for operating systems
- dougbarrett, on 05/22/2009, -1/+1Why don't you just open up your webpage that you are using as an "application" in it's own window, so it is distinctive over other Firefox pages that are opened in tabs?
- dkdevine, on 05/23/2009, -1/+1because you CAN.
- gmiernicki, on 05/24/2009, -0/+0or you can use 3.5 or Trunk builds of Firefox and you wont need a plugin at all... it does this out of the box :)
- Philbert, on 05/22/2009, -1/+1No link to what this jaunty thing is? I'm sure I will be buried for not knowing every software website in the world, but bloggers shouldn't just assume that every reader will know what they're talking about.
- janefriede, on 09/16/2009, -0/+0What I'd like to see is a fusion of web applications and Firefox extensions and to reflect some of the vocabulary of an operating system.
Now they are each separate entities. Web applications (eg Gmail), no extensions (eg Gmail Notifier). Browser (eg Firefox) are not operating systems (Windows for example). Yet, we use them in much the same way, and there is this artificial and arbitrary line drawn between the two, which I think is unnecessary. http://download.plot-movie.com/ - mrBitch, on 05/23/2009, -2/+1Actually, the next version of Ubuntu will be including a notification service that looks a LOT like Growl running on OSX...
- inactive, on 05/23/2009, -3/+1Why would you need a notification from Firefox when something is done downloading? If the download will take less than a minute, are you really going to minimize your browser, do something else, and forget that your download only has a few seconds left? If it's a big file and it's going to take some time, than using Firefox's download manager is dumb. It's garbage. You should be using a external download manager.
- RandallMc, on 05/23/2009, -4/+0Again ***** can work with any distro with a newer gnome. Ubuntu users stop taking articles that can be used for any disro and making it look like ubuntu can only do this. ***** ubuntu users,
- jebaird, on 05/22/2009, -10/+2now if there was only something like this for windows...
