- dark_helmet, on 01/16/2008, -2/+16This machine really shouldn't be compared to the EeePC. The EeePC is considered a sub-notebook, and therefore contains some parts which may be slower, or smaller capacity as to decrease power heat and power consumption. However these parts are more expensive (SSD is more than normal HDDs, ulv CPUs are more expensive than normal ones).
- kimjustin, on 01/16/2008, -0/+12699 New Zealand dollars = 543.3327 U.S. dollars
- Kumaku, on 01/16/2008, -0/+9Awsome! I bought a laptop like this one during a Wal-Mart secret sale for about $300. 7.10 works great with this.
- inactive, on 01/16/2008, -2/+10What a whiner. Acer actually makes darn good laptops. just to be fair, i have to admit Thinkpads are pretty darn solid as well
- AvidPreatorian, on 01/16/2008, -1/+9go kiwis go!

- dcbebop, on 01/16/2008, -1/+8Interestingly enough that a good portion of my afternoon today was spent dealing with problems installing ubuntu 7.1 on an Aspire. It was a disaster. Preloaded would have been nice ;)
- Zero82z, on 01/16/2008, -0/+7That's a recent model, definitely not from 2004. The components in that laptop only came out late last year.
- goggleBOX, on 01/16/2008, -1/+7Good point: I guess you can be sure all the hardware will work in Linux
Bad point: Doesn't look like it has wireless so all the hardware will work anyway
Good point: Uses DDR2 and running Linux so you can get 4GB in there for another NZ$120*
Bad point: doesn't have a DVD writer
Good point: uses a X3100 graphics core with a 1280x800 screen so you will be able to watch your 720p HD content no worries. mmmmm... wonder what the speakers are like?
Bad point: uses a X3100 graphics core so I wont be playing any games made in the last 5 years on this. Sims liv'n'large anyone?
Bad point: 5400RPM HDDs are slow!
Good point: 5400RPM HDDs are much faster than 4200RPM drives and this is a $700 notebook
Bad point: it's not going to be rugged enough for me to take down to the beach so I can do my quarterly budget while watching the kids play
Good point: at $599 AFTER rebate it doesn't matter if it is rugged enough I'll just by two!
P.S. having a X3100 graphics core means this is a new laptop model not something from 2004. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_GMA#GMA_X3100

- gibler, on 01/16/2008, -1/+5It has largely failed NZ too. It used to be a true sort of electronics store..
- gibler, on 01/16/2008, -0/+4don't forget that the $699 includes a 12.5 % sales tax.......
- BigBadaboom, on 01/16/2008, -0/+4Here's a working link that doesn't include the session id.
http://www.dse.co.nz/cgi-bin/dse.storefront/en/pro ... - mizike, on 01/16/2008, -8/+12so is the news here that acer has the balls to market 4 year old laptops, or that linux fans are dumb enough to buy them?
- dr3d, on 01/16/2008, -0/+4oops there goes small and light .. and how do you power that ext drive?
- Waffleskates, on 01/16/2008, -0/+4Awwww yeah, you know what time it is now. It's business time.
- stotty, on 01/16/2008, -0/+3What the hell are you guys doing to your Acer laptops? I have an Aspire 3660 and a few of my friends have Acer laptops too. We have never had any problems with them. Mine currently dual-boots Vista and Ubuntu 7.10 (I couldn't get sound working until 7.10). My in-built camera is fine nearly 2 years on despite comments above, and the laptop has never been in for repair. For the price I paid, I would absolutely recommend Acer. I guess it depends on personal experience, and maybe a little on how you treat your laptop.
- bytor4232, on 01/16/2008, -0/+3I picked up an Acer laptop similar to this one at a WalMart secret sale for $350 bucks. Its a decent little machine, and I've enjoyed it. Ubuntu 7.10 installed just fine on it.
- Haydio, on 01/16/2008, -1/+3Too bad its a Acer (Typing from my Aspire that has been in for repairs twice for the same problem)
- goggleBOX, on 01/16/2008, -0/+2Yes, it does have wireless as I have now found out
- daradib, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1And a $99 cashback.
- aussieNickuss, on 01/16/2008, -1/+2NZ$'s are as cheap as chips.
- Kumaku, on 01/16/2008, -0/+1As a Wal-Mart associate it would be HELL if any of the secret sales were to get out to the mass public. Most of these sales were only for 24hrs and we had limited quantities.
Just remembering the times when we announced Wiis for sale and the stupid people that didn't understand "while supplies last" and "first come first serve".
In short, working at Wal-Mart sucks and Wal-Mart execs suck even more, but damn if i don't need the money. - DarthTater, on 01/16/2008, -0/+1How the windows tax back works?
- dr3d, on 01/16/2008, -0/+1woot
- Haplo, on 01/16/2008, -0/+1Guide for installing Ubuntu on Acer Aspire 4320: http://johnbokma.com/mexit/2007/12/22/

And in Mexico one can get a refund of the Windows tax. If you can't buy an Acer with Linux I recommend to get the windows tax back. - goggleBOX, on 01/16/2008, -0/+1That's because Acer is cheap rubbsih... which is why we love it!
Age old problem, do I get something cheap or do I pay three times as much and get something good. - RemoteSojourner, on 01/16/2008, -0/+1No they are not the same. The windows one has a slower processor and an inferior optical drive. In addition the Linux one has a 99$ cashback.
- inactive, on 01/16/2008, -0/+1I have Ubuntu running on a Acer Aspire 3050. First I had to get rid of the Acer software, and then load Ubuntu. Everything works SD,Compiz,Awn,Wifi,. It took a little playing with, but nothing you can't handle after 2 years of Computer Science.
- skyshock1, on 01/16/2008, -1/+1So?
- thomasprebble, on 01/16/2008, -1/+1FOTC FTW!
- StanStutter, on 01/16/2008, -1/+1Let's revisit the SuSe/Lenovo story on Feb. 19 when it becomes available for purchase on the Web.
http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/na ... - avothecat, on 01/16/2008, -2/+2so it has linux on it. doesn't change that acer laptops suck. they break easily (built in camera dies within a couple of weeks) and you'll have to go through hell to get anything from their customer service too.
- DeathGod321, on 01/16/2008, -1/+1I don't know about the stability of Linux on the Aspire series, but I've had to fix all of my friend's and relatives' computers that had windows on them. I am not going to say this is entirely Acer's fault because I have never owned one, but the experiences of multiple people that I know have turned me off to Acer.
- r4ge, on 01/16/2008, -1/+1Most of the laptops i have owned have only lasted 1-2 years. Its usually upgrade time by then.
- nephilimx, on 01/16/2008, -1/+1I dont understand why computer makers are happy donating obsolete PC's to charitys and schools, yet seem set trying to sell 5year old notebooks

Go to dse.co.nz and enter "XC5822" into the search box. - Jalh, on 01/16/2008, -1/+1A good OS for a crapy hardware, pretty good ..... all pc sellers should do this to computers.
- gudnbluts, on 01/16/2008, -1/+0Actually, I've just proved myself wrong. I found the same lappy for the same price with Windows:-
http://www.bondandbond.co.nz/computers-accessories ... - saminfused, on 01/16/2008, -2/+1yay go us.
- Protoss, on 01/16/2008, -3/+2 nice.
- keyo, on 01/16/2008, -2/+1Three weeks ago I got my father ( a newbie) a $999NZ asus with 1GB ram and vista basic, I put ubuntu on it but unfortunately hardware support is poor. Wonder if I can take it back and get this one. The main point is not the specs of the machine but more the fact that another brand has come out of the closet and offered Linux.
- wiifm69, on 01/16/2008, -6/+4and stores about three eights of ***** all
- gudnbluts, on 01/16/2008, -2/+0NZ's probably not as cheap as what you're used to. I doubt you'd find a lappy here for under $800, unless you went second hand.
- StanStutter, on 01/16/2008, -3/+17.10 = year.month (release date)
- odoodle100, on 01/16/2008, -6/+4It's just not thin enough
- ha1f, on 01/16/2008, -6/+4How am I a whiner? I just pointing out a fact. Ubuntu is on its way to becoming the Microsoft of the Linux world. They're creating a user base that can't function without the simplistic tools they provide, and more over, doesn't acknowledge any happenings in the open source world that aren't related to their distro.
And let's be honest, you can't begin to compare the quality (or customer service) of the Thinkpad line to any Acer machine. I don't know about other Lenovo products, but where Thinkpads are concerned they picked up right where IBM left off. -
