- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -12/+113How dare a computer manufacturer from Taiwan install a Taiwanese distribution of Linux instead of ubuntu. You fanboys have to realize that not everyone wants ubuntu.
- useful, on 10/10/2007, -5/+36throw kde on any linux system and most people couldn't tell the difference
- toolegittoquit, on 10/10/2007, -2/+32At least you're not paying the windows tax. That's all that REALLY matters... isn't it?
- HarryBauzonia, on 10/10/2007, -2/+31Good.
I really don't care for Ubuntu too much. I don't hate it, mind you; I just think there are better distros for the work I do. Much of the Ubuntu hype is just that. - pedru, on 10/10/2007, -2/+26Getting a wireless network card working out of the box cannot be the only argument for a distro.
- Azimuth1, on 10/10/2007, -2/+23"...said Ignatius Beh, a Memory World sales executive."
Nice name. - DeathGod321, on 10/10/2007, -3/+23You mean there are other types of Linux? :-O
I found Ubuntu to be like the "home edition" of Linux, it just wasn't for me. - itomato, on 10/10/2007, -3/+20Ubuntu looks great compared to Windows, but other than that, it's not the be-all, end-all.
It's got training wheels welded on, even the "server" version. - HCviolence, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17Exactly, as long as you don't pay for Windows. You can burn and install any flavor of Linux you want.
- popothebright, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17Ubuntu's nice and all. Personally I prefer Gentoo running KDE. But why is this news? Use whatever distro makes you happy.
- nodnod, on 10/10/2007, -6/+21Except when you go to update your system. That is where the Debian/Ubuntu apt system rocks.
- HarryBauzonia, on 10/10/2007, -3/+18Certainly.
...and on rpm-based systems, Yum rocks. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13Slackware and Gentoo is where it's at.
- brasso, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12So? I think Acer will take care of that, they are selling laptops with that OS, remember?
- MavRevMatt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9I use and like Ubuntu, but really STFU. Ubuntu is not the only distro around, nor can it be considered the best. The good thing here is it's Linux being used and not Windows, if that's what you're after.
- HeyArnold, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10waaaa! its not ubuntu!!! :'( what will we do?
/sarcasm - YourDoom123, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7See, but that's just it... linux is about choice: that's why there are two (major/popular) desktop environments (kde and gnome), multiple web browsers, and most importantly, multiple distros. All of these distros seem like a waste of effort, but they give people options: don't like kde? don't know how to install gnome? just switch to a distro with gnome preinstalled. If you want a distro that does everything well, you'll end up with a distro that does everything with mediocrity whereas a distro that focuses its attention on one or two areas will do those one or two areas very well.
- stupergenius, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Don't forget FreeBSD's Ports! Coolest automated build system evar.
- mrsteveman1, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Opensuse makes ubuntu look stupid in a lot of areas......
- williamdyer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6The number of distributions doesn't matter.
It's the quality of the respositories and the update management.
Ultimately, it could change to a situation where every major OEM runs their own distro. Why not? - Renton, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9Ubuntu is mostly for entry level linux users and people migrating from windows. If you are more of a professional, there are many better versions to choose from.
- mrsteveman1, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6I use suse all the time, but yum does suck, massively.
- Muncher, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8For me, the only thing that really puts Ubuntu ahead of the other distributions is the hardware support. Which is totally irrelevant, since I'm sure Acer is making sure that all the devices work with the operating system they ship it with...
- jimbren, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I'm an ubuntu fan, that's for sure. But I like the thought of other distributions getting press and exposure. Although, Linpus? Sounds like something I'd get a shot for.
- dark_helmet, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I think the word you're looking for is "ported." If you can say that yum is hacked onto those, then apt is hacked onto everything but Debian. Just because a package manager is standard between several distros doesn't make it bad. The only really bad thing i've experienced with yum is performance, even there it is in some ways better. For example it will use more than one mirror per repo unlike apt.
- geminitojanus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4The problem is, buying a computer with Microsoft's OS installed and *never* touching Microsoft's software, formatting it immediately after purchase. Then you've thrown away money on software you're never going to use and supported Microsoft. I don't know about you, but that just sounds silly to me. All hardware should be sold blank or with software of no monetary value (i.e. Linux distributions without support contracts), so that whatever OS you're choosing to run, you're voting with your wallet.
And you'd think Microsoft would have found that out by now; they can charge you $200 in a store for the OS, but only $50 if you buy it from an OEM. If everyone was paying $200 per copy either Microsoft's software would be 4x the quality is now, or they'd be (at least) 4x poorer. - Tarmas, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Or KDE. Or FCE. Or whatever manager you feel like installing.
- EnterDaMatrix, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5So is Windows "Zero Configuration" virus!
I didn't know destroying personal data could be so easy! - trollick, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4They don't install Linux on Ubuntu? For shame.
- jmnormand, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3not necessarily true. the same laptop dell sells with ubuntu pre-installed runs a dozen linux distros with no problem. however ubuntu wont even install with out quite a bit of know how involved. ubuntu is great but not the best in all situations.
- jdhore1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Broadcom cards + Linux = hell...nuff said...You can EASILY find a IPW2200 on ebay for $20 if you don't want to deal with the hassle of a Broadcom card.
- archlich, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3As do I. I use ubuntu on my laptop because I really don't want to be compiling programs if I need them in a hurry. However I do have a gentoo webserver which works just fine since I don't need programs at the drop of hat.
- richid, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Maybe you should stick to Ubuntu...
- addictedd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2That's only because Windows has such a larger userbase, developers tend to stick to Windows. It's a never-ending cycle.
- UNL1M1T3D, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I own and know friends who own Acer laptops and haven't heard of any complaints from them.
- williamdyer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3When they get rid of the retarded Microsoft deal, I'll take a look. Until then, there are plenty of other choices.
- b00n, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Awesome , I really hate Ubuntu because of the fanboys i want to stab in the face(I'm not saying that other distros or oses haven't got any fanboys, but Ubuntu and apple ones seem the worst) and because of the slowness of it
- weizbox, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Hah... nice try.. but without using any real points.. that argument can easily be throw back the other way.. so thats never going to sort anything out.
I use Gentoo, but I have nothing against other people using Ubuntu. It's a preference choice if anything. I think as far as Gentoo goes, it has less about being 'elite' and 'special', and more about learning and understanding how Linux works while having an environment that is setup in a way that allows for extensive customization to be done in a more simplified way than you would have to go about doing it in a binary package based distro. The tools they have make the harder parts of customizing much Linux easier.
I gotta love your attempt, but name calling doesn't get anyone anywhere. A good bit of people are jerks in any walk of life, no matter the distro, not matter the country, or preference in music. Just keep in mind that the individuals do not always represent the group, and to start generalizing is to start your path as a jerk. - heavyal, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2If by lazy you mean it does practically everything out of the box without me having to work all day just to get it where I need it to be so that I can get some real world work done, then yeah, it is the lazy mans linux. But I wouldn't have it any other way personally. I've been through the whole linux from scratch, gentoo, rock, et al kinds of Linux distros and these days there is one reason I choose Ubuntu and thats because I can install and get to work in less than an hour.
- Dracker, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Dugg up - the bcm43xx driver and ndiswrapper are the only choices for that series of Broadcom cards, and neither of those work particularly well with most cards. I have 2 computers with 2 separate bcm4318-based cards and neither work without extensive configuration, setup, and luck.
- heavyal, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2No, to be completely accurate, Ubuntu installs GNOME by default, KUBUNTU installs KDE by default and XUBUNTU installs XFCE. Certainly you can start with one and switch to the other but Ubuntu PROPER is Gnome based.
- b3tamike, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2This isn't really big news. Acer has been selling systems with Linpus preinstalled for a few years now (in its Asian markets at least).
- jdhore1, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4yum is about the worst package management system i've ever seen...Hell, it was COMPLETELY hacked on to Suse and Red Hat/CentOS/Fedora from Yellow Dog to try to make them more friendly.
- Renton, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It all depends on what you need. Try this site to see the different distros http://www.linux.org/dist/index.html
- rushfan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2My theory on linux preinstalled was that I didn't care what the distro was. If you have a reasonable clue how to install and set-up a linux distro, if one distro works on your laptop any other distro will work perfectly fine.
- nytejade, on 10/10/2007, -7/+9Ubuntu is lazy linux... That's why it's popular. I don't see how installing a different distro is news. This is stupid.
- havuk, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Acer sold their laptops with Red Flag Linux for years now. What is the news here?
Oh right, it's not UBUNTU! - toolegittoquit, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3This post is about a laptop you dolt. You can't just have your cousin Pete throw one of those together for you.
- Malachai, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I wish digg wouldn't make me feel so guilty for choosing Ubuntu over other distros.
I use Ubuntu because that's what's easiest for people migrating from Windows. If they see me using Gentoo, they'd want to use Gentoo.
And by the way...what exactly is so "limiting" about Ubuntu? - jdhore1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The Acer version of linux does not need to support peripherals at least on Acer's end...My linux install natively supported my ipod, my printers (both HP's), my PDA, my USB keyboard and mouse and my external drives (flash, hard drives and optical drive). ALL that these manufacturers do when they put linux on a system is install the drivers for their own hardware.
