- KevinJim, on 10/10/2007, -3/+54Just one step closer to the end of monopoly.
- oringo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+23Don't be surprised by the price, $999 SGD = $660 USD
- alexg05, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16The Eee is Asus, not Acer.
- ShrimpCrackers, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13And one step closer for Acer, no wonder they have the biggest growth rates by far in the industry.
- bagelpirate, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Im working on a 22" Acer Monitor right now.
I alos had a 15.4" Acer Notebook that ran very well and even gamed fine with a X1600m
I have no complaints about acer. - samdu, on 10/10/2007, -11/+20Now if Acer stopped making complete ***** hardware, we'd have something here.
- outlaw686, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9yea this is actually good for ati, with tells pressure and now acers pressure on ati they will be forced to make better linux drivers.
- JJNova, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Hmm...
Doesn't look like Acer is actually offering Ubuntu Notebooks, but more like someone is reselling Acer notebooks with Ubuntu installed on them. We do this at my job also, here in the United States. The problem is that Acer Laptops have a 'soft-button' switch to turn Wireless on and off. Windows supports the switch, but Ubuntu does not. Therefore making it infeasible to take the time to use multiple workarounds (ndiswrapper and the like).
Saying that, Acer is a Taiwanese company, and I am sure they offer other options to customers around the world. Hopefully they are selling Ubuntu machines, or at least Notebooks that will run Ubuntu efficiently out-of-box. Currently, there are no models in Acers modern library that work as intended with Ubuntu. As I said though, most of my experience is with the North American products. - ShrimpCrackers, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Acer has a return/replacement policy for any number of dead pixels. So far none of the 45 Acer monitors we have at the datacenter have had any problems.
In addition, Acer does not make the actual LCD panels itself that was giving you dead pixels, just the enclosure etc. There are only a few companies that do that in the world. - krinn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Not surprising considering what Acer's president has been saying about Vista lately.
http://arstechnica.com/journals/microsoft.ars/2007/07/24/acer-president-the-entire-industry-is-disappointed-by-windows-vista - Valerfore, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5The price in the ad is in Singapore Dollars.. once you convert it to USD, the price is right.
- J0hnD0e, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Acer has been trying a lot of different things lately to attract more notebook buyers.
- ShrimpCrackers, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Outlaw is right although he didn't need to insult; Intel markets its processors with different names in different parts of the world due to copyright issues and what-not. The "Pentium Dual Core" is the same as the "Core Duo" in the USA.
- stupergenius, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4So if that's in Singapore Dollars, then the grand total with the 7%GST is $660.39. Not bad at all for those specs.
- Nodren, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4i've never had problems with acer, i've purchased over 20 acer monitors off newegg, all work very well and are very reasonably priced... i've purchased two acer laptops, and 3 acer desktops, which work alot better then a few dell laptops, and dell desktops and hp desktops we've gotten... i've had more DOA parts from dell and HP, where as acer has never shipped me anything DOA, and their pc's dont come with alot of crap pre installed(maybee 3 applications, a simple 5 minute clean up and you're ready to go)
- daftman, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6You can't have an Open source monopoly you idiot - unless it's a new game you're trying to rip off. It's not a ***** corporation.
- arbulus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Hmm. One bottle says "Delete Me". The other says "Ctrl+Z". Well, can't hurt to try.
Alice in Digital Wonderland and Through the Widescreen - clickwir, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Inaccurate. This is not ACERs offering. This is a computer vendor that loaded Ubuntu.
- celkin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4add?
- sloppychris, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Why is profit so terrible? Some of the best ideas and conveniences exist because profit motivates people to develop them.
- ShrimpCrackers, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4AlexG05 is absolutely correct, why is he being dugg down?
Proof that it is Asus EEE PC and not Acer EEE PC:

Proof that Acer and Asus are different companies:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acer_%28company%29
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asus - MeneerR, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Well, even in such cases .. Ubuntu would be the best chance of them NOT pirating windows.
- lapubell, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Reading this on an Acer 5000 series laptop perfectly running Linux Mint. Never had any problems with it yet.
- AshUK, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5I doubt running any OS on my Acer laptop [and at the current exchange rate, it was $1,214USD] would have saved it's hard drive from failing after 8 months and numerous trips to the repair center. No matter what OS they run, it'll still fall apart.
- WhoDey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2If I had 200 diggs, I'd give them all to you. I've owned two different Acer laptops, and I will never ever ever purchase a third after all of the hardware problems I had. The Dell I have since purchased has run flawlessly since.
- straxus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I've been seeing "Pentium Dual Core" systems here in the USA as well. They appear to have less L2 cache and a slower FSB than your standard Core 2 Duo. I don't keep up with these things as much as I used to. I'll have to look it up and find out exactly how they are naming things these days.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2just a slight comment abuse but Acer has been putting linux on their laptops in the international market for a long time now.

i had this price list lying at my place for about 3 months now. the celeron based models are close to 2 one+ years old now in terms of market introduction. - outlaw686, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4dude your an idiot read the sticker again, it says dual core
- stanleypoodle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2But are you running any of the 3D desktop packages, ie Compiz?
- slapthemonkey, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Thats great!!
- TechCF, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Apple has always been there trying to end the monolopy (but unable due to designer pricetags)..
Acer is nice, my Travelmate 803Lci survived a lot - clickwir, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I have an Acer Aspire 3004 laptop with the broadcom wireless, yes it has the button to turn the wireless on and off. In Dapper and Edgy, yes you had to fight with ndiswrapper to get it to work, but it did. With Feisty, it was just an extra package that I had to install that took care of the wireless broadcom for me. It's really easy now. Not out of the box easy, but one step away from that easy.
- YourFuzzyGod, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I have had Ubuntu on my Aspire 5100 for about 9 months and the only problem I have had was with my card reader. The USB-bus version is not natively supported by Ubuntu so you have to compile some drivers to get it to work. Not a big deal as the card reader is not natively supported in Vista either. Also, I just tried my wireless switch and it seems to work just fine. Perhaps other models don't use the Atheros chip.
- stanleypoodle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I don't think you understand what Open Source is about, or how an economy works.
- UNL1M1T3D, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4That is sweet. I love Acer laptops, you get a lot for what you pay for, though the one in that add is kind of expensive.
- mcmlxxii, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Do it yourself!
- weizbox, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Even US distributors have been selling Linux on laptops for a while now, like Synnex who happens to sell Acer notebooks as well with Linux pre-loaded. I'm not sure exactly sure when they started by I know they have at least been doing it since May.
- fuze44, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I will never purchase another Acer. I bought their high-end tablet a couple of years ago and had to send it in 3 times before it worked right. Luckily, I had the extended warranty, but why should I have to spend $300 extra bucks to get what I already paid for -- a working machine? Stay away, people. I went with Dell and I'm happy.
- mahler, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1>We do this at my job also, here in the United States. The problem is that Acer Laptops have a 'soft-button' switch to turn Wireless on and off.
>Windows supports the switch, but Ubuntu does not.
If you're reselling commerically, can't you hire a programmer to support the switch in Linux? - DKasler, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Did you even read the rest of the replies?
Oringo said "Don't be surprised by the price, $999 SGD = $660 USD" - ruiacp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Hope you're right!
- MeneerR, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Actually that would HELP. It means the resellers switch. The consumer would just consider it a new computer; therefor the programs and everything look a little different. Its not like they are not experiencing the same issues right now with Vista. New OS means mom and dad have to relearn a lot of stuff. Secondly, the new generation learns software faster anyway..
- Jorophose, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1THIS IS IN SINGAPORE CURRENCY.
God you all make me want to cut myself with rusty foons... - whisperedlie, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Great, now Acer can bring failure in the form of bottom-barrel, garbage hardware to open source users in the same way they did to Windows users!
- wba3107, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Not a bad deal if you could find it in the U.S. for under $700
- dadrew1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Thankfully, Oringo below gave us the actual conversion, so that we didn't just have to take your word for it!
- asadajk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1nice move!
- abandonedhero, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Okay, I'll just get my digg-down fix by digging down your THREE duplicates.
- tnatharik, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Thats from singapore, damnit. I live here and i was not informed.
- rmjb, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I have 2 Acer LCDs at home and I've bought many Acer LCDs on behalf of people and never had any problems with them. It's a step up from AOC that's for sure!
