- talman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Only way to settle it: thumbs up for vim, thumbs down for emacs.
Mine is for vim. There might be some slight bias towards vim, since emacs users may look at the article about vim and go "pfft!", but should be interesting. - kodek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Why does it have to have comments? Is there a rule I missed?
- Barleyman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7visual & vi in the same sentence = funny
- grungyhamster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Oh the holy wars.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Bet I'm the only one here who says that I've used both vi and emacs and they're both fine programs.
- futaris, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5same thing. Just in a gnome wrapper.
- sHARD>>, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Gvim != vim
- gaoshan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You... you... heretic!
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3you mean a gtk wrapper
- regeya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nah. You're right. There's absolutely nothing wrong with either one. Both tend to appeal to people who're either power users or into self-abuse. Kidding! I tend to switch off on both.
I've said it IRL, and I'll say it here: Take some time to learn some vi basics; someday, you'll be on a random unix-y machine, and you'll get 'command not found' when you type 'emacs'. - tigro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2what is not visual about vi? does it not show you text? how much more visual do you need?
- prockcore, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I'm confused, why would you quit out of a text editor in order to run an operating system? :)
- justinjacobs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@neko
But what would you write it in? - jamessavik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nope, they are both quite useful. I've got both programs and use them for different things.
- Barleyman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"man's editor" ...while you were hitting escape a million times, I was chatting online with babes.
- rmqjr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Did he have the spell checker on when he wrote "omini?"
- GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Bet I'm the only one here who says that I've used both vi and emacs and they're both fine programs."
You've used Emacs! Successfully......
What do you do about the RSIs or do you have extremely long fingers and/or nimble toes.
To be fair Emacs does what it tries to do well, I just don't want to play chess when I'm coding. Vi/m is the better actual editor but Emacs removes the need for you to switch virutal consoles to do other things. If a few infidels prefer this madness them who am I to strap a bomb to my waist and blow them up over it. - DontSayFanboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@pauldonnely
I found myself on a very old SunOS 4 system at work last year that only had ed. Man, vi would have been nice right about then. I laughed at your comment. - strcmp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1emacs for LaTeX
vi for everything else - jamessavik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1VIM rocks. It has a fair learning curve but documentation is available, the online help is better than most and the program is one of the most powerful editors you can get.
One of its sweetest features is the ability to convert file types Linux/Unix Windows on the fly.
All that and it is free too. - pauldonnelly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Only people who have never used a man's editor doubt that vi is visual.
- pauldonnelly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bet you're not.
- DontSayFanboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0@regaya
So true. vi is an essential skill for unix admins. It's everywhere. like I wrote above, even if you find yourself on a WAY old system that doesn't have vi, you should still be able to use the same commands to hack your way through ed.
Emacs is a fine editor, but going on a crusade over it does you no service. That is like refusing to learn how to drive a stick shift because you prefer an automatic. One day you'll find yourself stranded. - i440, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I prefer it when all the features are already written, thank you
- neko, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2notepad.exe FTW!
I kid, I kid. The only way to go is to write your own text editor. - racter, on 10/12/2007, -13/+2best feature:

~$ emacs - justnick, on 10/12/2007, -14/+1Nothing really to say here.
Just thought a story on the front page with 46 diggs should have at least one comment.
(It got 7 diggs in the last 2 minutes, no comments)
