- awhiteflame, on 10/13/2009, -2/+14I went to order a Mini 10v with Ubuntu, and I had the worst customer service experience ever. The sales rep ended up lying about the specifications, ordered the wrong colour on top of that, and did not cancel the order upon request (upon seeing that it was wrong). I blame the outsourced not-native-English speaking sales department.
I went to Dell because of Linux, but until they shape up before I'll ever consider or recommend them again. Caveat emptor. - king_aaronj, on 10/13/2009, -0/+11You're just a rotten flame baiter. Go play somewhere else.

So request to talk to a US based rep. They are required to transfer you. - nxusername, on 10/13/2009, -2/+12Moblin is freakin' sweet.

- inactive, on 10/13/2009, -3/+11Considering what people typically use a netbook for, does it really matter what OS is on it? I guess Windows might have some advantage for games but really, you're not going to be playing Crysis on an Intel GMA 950.
- cawfee, on 10/13/2009, -0/+6Buy an EEE PC 4G on Ebay for 100 bucks, throw Easy Peasy on it.

You're set. Even runs Photoshop in Wine. - BrownieMix, on 10/13/2009, -0/+6I want a netbook so bad....
- waspbr, on 10/13/2009, -0/+5looks alright but the battery life is a bit of a let down. Netbooks are usually used on-the-go so long battery life is kinda essential.
- Elranzer, on 10/13/2009, -1/+6Which Windows are you referring to?
The one that's outdated and no longer getting any support (XP)? Or the one that's too resource-heavy to run smoothly on the Mini 10v (Vista/7)?
More useful, eh? - hotelnaukri, on 10/13/2009, -0/+4i think it is a good gadget
- vicaya, on 10/13/2009, -0/+4Got my mini 10v with N280 from Dell outlet for $200. Tried the moblin remix, not impressed: the cutesy UI takes too much vertical space. I settled on Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.04 with traditional desktop with top and bottom panels to the left and right. Now I can have 2 terminals side by side at 80x44 with Monaco (at 7.5 to mimic the crisp original Monaco 10 look). It's a mean little coding machine, a lovely alternative to my regular laptop. BTW, you can install MacOS X (Leopard and Snow Leopard) on this thing without much issue. But the Jaunty remix feels quite a bit snappier, even with compiz on.
- archiesteel, on 10/13/2009, -0/+3Or, you know, do like I do and order it through the website so you don't have to talk to anyone.
Actually, Purolator ***** up my order and told me to call Dell to sort it out. The rep from Dell was *very* efficient, and basically fixed everything for me while I was on hold. I had a great CS experience, but of course YMMV. - king_aaronj, on 10/14/2009, -0/+3Perhaps. If said in similar but inverse context I would. There is a place and a time for windows and a place and a time for linux... and mac too, heck even Free BSD and Solaris.
- Joh739, on 10/13/2009, -1/+4I think your battery would hate you when you put a energy hungry operating system on it.
- lemur, on 10/13/2009, -0/+3You can get one. I used to think I couldn't afford a netbook, but then I saw a nice one on woot.com for $170. I've seen them offer computers frequently, so that's one good way to find a deal; there are bound to be more netbooks to come.
- archiesteel, on 10/13/2009, -0/+3I agree, it seems Moblin isn't quite ready (and, to be fair, they're not saying it is either).
BTW Karmic Koala works like a charm on the 10v (updated through the update-manager, too). I suggest you give it a spin once it comes out officially (or before, if you're adventurous...though so far I haven't had any problems whatsoever). - gizram84, on 10/13/2009, -1/+3reliance on billion dollar corporations is a side effect of being a useless moron.
- archiesteel, on 10/13/2009, -2/+4Moblin != Linux. You can't judge of the maturity of Linux based on a project which is still in heavy development.
Personally, I tried the Moblin Remix on my 10v and thought it was pretty good, but that the dumbed-down interface isn't for the type of user I am.
So I went back to regular Ubuntu (Karmic) and it is *very* ready for Prime Time. Windows 7 can suck my dick. - awhiteflame, on 10/13/2009, -0/+2I would have ordered online, but my internet connection was finicky and I didn't trust it. Anyways, that's not a valid excuse for poor customer service.
To be fair, they did process the return without too much of an argument. Granted: I had to call back twice (first time went to voicemail for the sales rep) for them to actually spell my email address right for the UPS label to be sent to. Again, I blame non-native-English speakers. - awhiteflame, on 10/13/2009, -0/+2I had to call thrice to get to the correct sales department, so I felt lucky that I was even talking to someone, instead of being transferred to the wrong department who transferred me to nothing (twice!).
Apparently dell.ca advertised the US 1-800 number, and the operators couldn't figure out how to transfer to Canada sales. - archiesteel, on 10/13/2009, -0/+2My Ubuntu Mini 10v requires no maintenance - everything "just works."
I mean, Apple computers are good, but they're overrated in my opinion. - lemur, on 10/13/2009, -1/+2ebayyyyyyyyy
- Azathothh, on 10/16/2009, -0/+1you forgot the \s
http://hardware.slashdot.org/story/09/08/25/157209 ... - bloggerad1970, on 10/14/2009, -0/+1I installed moblin on a USB drive and booted my laptop off it. It booted up in about 15 seconds...Not bad. I use mainly for web browsing when I don't want to wait for windows..
- NoNameWorks, on 10/14/2009, -2/+2I don't see why the focus is on boot up time. I do it once a day at most. The only time I can see it making a difference is when I realize I forgot something and have to boot up and get it and shut down again. On the other hand if it booted up in 2 seconds I would would probably shut it down frequently.
- Azathothh, on 10/13/2009, -4/+2would you say that if it was the other way around?
- MightyUpsetter, on 10/13/2009, -4/+2buy one then you tit.
- theeggman, on 10/13/2009, -5/+0Of course anything Linux is freakin' sweet!
This part sounded particularly "sweet".
"It has the potential to be a game-changer, but it still requires a lot of work before it will be ready for regular users."
Or this...
"Key components, particularly the browser and the media library program, seem far from achieving feature parity with the existing open-source software applications that they are intended to replace." - gsehgal1, on 10/13/2009, -6/+0What I am really waiting for is the Apple tablet PC.... I really prefer apple products to any other Window/Linux product.. as they deliver the essence of a true consumer product. One which can be used without too much maintenance... a price I am willing to pay for....
- Cyberdropping, on 10/13/2009, -7/+1Right! Did the guy even read the article. And this was a netbook set up from the get go for moblin. I tried moblin (the latest version) on my ASUS netbook and it SUCKED. I absolutely think the interface is a ggreat departure from the norm and it is good, but- the interface on Win 7 is much better. And it is not even designed specifically for a netbook (the interface that is) like Moblin. I bet a nickle that the Win 7 head to head with Mobliin would have longer battery life as well.
I scurried back to Win 7 and can't wait for my 50 dollar RTM version to arrive on the 22nd.
Linux is not ready for prime time. But, it is free so I guess that counts for something. - pstroll, on 10/13/2009, -28/+4I'd format that ***** and put a copy of Windows on it. Then it would be useful.
