- iRelinquish, on 02/12/2008, -3/+67i love when i notice some one is watching my laptop screen at college, and i simply flip the cube. The result is priceless : ) keep up the great work CF!
- sloppychris, on 02/12/2008, -2/+59The beginnings of headtracking!? Already?! Windows users won't see this until 2014.
- sloppychris, on 02/12/2008, -0/+34I figured it out. Uncheck 'snap inverted' in the wobbly windows plugin.
- Aitese, on 02/12/2008, -1/+31OK...I'm pretty sick of all the "Why add MORE effects?" or the "These are useless I just want to get things done" people.
Fact 1: No one FORCES you to have Compiz...you like? Turn it on. You don't like? Turn it off. See? Simple.
Fact 2: More choice is better than NO choice. You USUALLY only have one way of doing things...find one you like and STICK with it. I like my windows to quickly fade into the background...I used to like them to disappear like a genie into the task bar...it's up to you. Saying there's too much choice means you're a fickle, unassertive person unable to make simple decisions for yourself...grow up. "Ooh there just too many...I want the ALL!!" Please.
Fact 3: You can also NOT install each plug-in...yeah I know, novel idea. Uninstall the plug-ins that seem to offend you by their mere presence. The fact you haven't turned them on should not be a reason for you not to pour scorn on their very existence and fear them. I mean, imagine the bloat that 56KB plug-in is causing to your 250GB hard drive...the very shame of it! - trolldetective, on 02/12/2008, -1/+30Aha! I've caught another troll!
- arjie, on 02/12/2008, -1/+28There are two problems with your comment.
1. Linux users aren't one giant cohesive monster, they don't all think the same, they don't all feel the same.
2. System requirements, my dear friend, Aero vs. Compiz Fusion is a war that isn't worth fighting. People have run Compiz on Pentium 2s. - positron, on 02/12/2008, -0/+25Sounds like a clear case of desktop envy to me.
- Audacitor, on 02/12/2008, -1/+26I booted into Ubuntu from my flash drive on one of my high school's computers once. The teacher thought the cube was a game. I tried to show her it wasn't by using some of the other effects, but the wobbly windows just sort of solidified her beliefs. I had to use Windows the rest of the day -_-
- BigManOnCampus, on 02/12/2008, -0/+21Do you mean adding effects or adding features?
I can't see why you would want them to stop adding features. Why not make the best use of an accelerated 3D desktop? Why not keep adding features until you find 1 or 2 that possibly completely change how people use their computers?
I can see how you might want them to stop adding "EFFECTS" but effects are different from features. - mvent2, on 02/12/2008, -4/+23LMAO, Linux users have modern GUI's that don't require a $300 graphics card to use unlike Vista.
- rogerbly, on 02/12/2008, -4/+23flipp'n the cube gets the girls talking at starbucks. Only an air Mac gets more attention.
- noseeme, on 02/12/2008, -1/+18People need to learn to use Stage6 for videos. I can't see ***** in these little youtube ones!
- sirhomer, on 02/12/2008, -0/+17Isn't CompizFusion modular? How about you use use/install the plugins you want?
- CoolGoose, on 02/12/2008, -0/+167600 Is not a piece of crap. Anyway.. Compiz works fine on a bunch of 6200 and lower.
- SamuelHenderson, on 02/12/2008, -0/+15I had to use Windows the rest of the day -_-
There is no greater punishment :'( Well, there are some, but not many. - nomasteryoda, on 02/12/2008, -0/+15Ok, this is to all the naysayers of Compiz-Fusion. Get a brain! Sure, people below 40 see Compiz-Fusion and go, 'Oh, man how do I get (that) eye-candy like, on my Windows box?', but for most anyone else, they need to magnify or change resolution to be able to read any text on a computer screen... This is one place CF rocks the socks off the weak offerings of MS.
Shortly after Compiz came to Ubuntu I showed a group of people between 50-70 the magnification features and immediately they wanted to know how to get it.
...See, Open Source can change world we live in. - rogerbly, on 02/12/2008, -2/+16well, I'm married with two kids... so I'm not really interact'n so much as watch'n. I assure you, the linux boys are getting girls with this stuff.
- DeviateSeptum, on 02/12/2008, -3/+16Cool. Stuff. My wish is that you could turn off edge resistance with wobbly windows.
- bllambert, on 02/12/2008, -0/+12Compiz works on the EEE PC (integrated graphics on a uber cheap laptop). Its a lot more impressive than Vista. However, Compiz is for people who tinker, and Vista is not.
- arjie, on 02/12/2008, -0/+10Scale, dude. Scale. That is one god-like feature, it's like Exposé on Macs.
- beermad, on 02/12/2008, -0/+9While I agree that a lot of the plugins are pointless, my experience is that far from being a waste of resources, Compiz Fusion actually makes better use of them. I think this is because it actually offloads a lot more rendering work that the CPU was previously doing to the graphics card.
My computer is actually MORE responsive when I use Compiz than it was before. - trylleklovn, on 02/12/2008, -0/+9Burn!
- CoolGoose, on 02/12/2008, -0/+91. Ubuntu isn't the only linux distro even if it's one of the most popular.
2. As they say they're trying to backport it to 0.6 (that ubuntu has)
3. Wait for ubuntu hardy it will have 0.7
Disclaimer. I'm an Ubuntu user right now. - qber, on 02/12/2008, -0/+8I don't complain about Vista because of how it looks - personally I think Aero is quite attractive, and a significant improvement over previous Windows GUIs. I just don't think I should need two gigs of RAM and a new video card just to run Vista in non-ugly mode when my 4 year old laptop runs Compiz Fusion just fine.
- UKsHaDoW, on 02/12/2008, -0/+8Works flawless on my geforce 3 ti200. I'm not even going to try vista.
- sloppychris, on 02/12/2008, -2/+10I didn't know what edge resistance was until just looking it up. That would be nice.
- DestroyFascism, on 02/12/2008, -0/+7I agree,
My part of life is multi media and dealing allot with images. In Ubuntu at work I can show people so much more 400% faster than I could In win. With desktop zoom I have shown them "blow ups" of cencepts in seconds. No waiting for Adobe or windows "crap" image veiwer to load, zoom and close. Simple ideas make the difference in workflow and productivity. Microsoft don't have much of that going on... - aladrin, on 02/12/2008, -0/+7And they can be. Don't turn that extra crap on. With just the basics and a couple extras, compiz can make you more productive. 3D acceleration helps quite a bit on my machine, and the ability to make a window partially transparent has come in handy a few times.
You don't -have- to enable all the crap at once. You get to choose what you want. - Mejogid, on 02/12/2008, -1/+8I'm not entirely sure if I understand hat bj meant, but there certainly comes a point when the number of features/plugins can be overwhelming or even considered bloat. This could definitely be solved if someone could come up with a more usable GUI that focused on popular plug-ins and options rather than offering every option under the sun.
- DeviateSeptum, on 02/12/2008, -1/+8Holy *****! You're right. If you do a Google search, people have come up with ridiculously complex solutions to this and all along there is a checkbox.
- SmSpillaz, on 02/12/2008, -0/+7But coding new features is fun!
And bugfixing is kind of boring to be honest. There is quality control over here at CF, but using your imagination to come up with some cool new way of doing things is really neat and worth spending time doing IMO
Anyways, it's not like every feature there is compulsory to use :P Right now I have close to about 90 or so plugins, but far less are featured in the main plugins pack. - arcticblue, on 02/12/2008, -0/+7I've been going to Stage6 for a while now and I've never been redirected to "some porn site" even when I was actually looking for porn. And anyway, all the 18+ stuff is hidden unless you have an account.
- Vinvin, on 02/12/2008, -0/+6So THAT's what they're doing at Guantanamo Bay!
- ganlet, on 02/12/2008, -0/+6I run compiz fusion on an old intel 915 chipset. I dual boot and while I've used xp alot more recently (its currently better about its power management) I perfer a linux desktop hands down over xp or vista(and yes I have spent more time than id like, "working" with vista)
- SQLserver, on 02/12/2008, -1/+7Alas.... It has started.
M$ and Apple fanboys have already commented saying:
"LOL USELESS!"
or
"THIS IS AS USELESS AS YOU SAY VISTA IS!"
But once again, they are completely missing the point.
Many features, may indeed be useless. If they are, you CAN SIMPLY TURN THEM OFF.
THink the cube wastes time? In 2 clicks you change change it to a desktop wall.
Call Wobbly Windows useless(they aren't...), turn them off.
Yeah, sure, there ARE some useless effects, like Fire, or Water, or a gear/aquarium in the cube, but you DON'T need them.
If all you want is a nice fade in and out, with 2 workspaces, fine.
The thing is, Compiz Fusion can BE ANYTHING. So don't call it useless. - Leviathan88, on 02/12/2008, -0/+6your mom?
- mrmagos, on 02/12/2008, -0/+5Sexy AND delicious?
- FLarsen, on 02/12/2008, -0/+5And the programmers making this, is doing it voluntarily. They think "I want to make this effect" and they do, nobody is telling them to do it. Then they share it for others to use.
This is not a single company making something, but volunteers. It's not like telling Microsoft to add more accessibility options in windows, but like telling all food manufacturers (not the seller. The seller represents one entity controlling many, the manufacturers represents all the individual programmers who contribute to something like compiz) to only make healthy food.
Like Aitese said, nobody is forcing you to use it. Choice is always good. - theaceoffire, on 02/12/2008, -2/+7Yes I have. I prefer linux.
- TheVirus, on 02/12/2008, -1/+6*****.
- mCanada, on 02/12/2008, -1/+6I think it's time to dual boot the old g4 powerbook again :) those dam closed source wireless issues :(
- Audacitor, on 02/12/2008, -1/+6Air mac. Hehehe.
- gutistg, on 02/12/2008, -0/+5Yes, because it's so difficult to understand what the plugins do when they're named things like "desktop cube." And installation? Don't even get me started on how hard installing new plugins is...
- Vinvin, on 02/12/2008, -0/+5I see... "Haha, look at that idiot, he's got a 3D spinning cube on his desktop instead of Windows' Teletubby background, what a loser!"
- aladrin, on 02/12/2008, -0/+5I disagree. My intel onboard video is slow and laggy with kwin, but with compiz it's -very- fast. Everything feels so much smoother.
So more than eyecandy, it's about speed and the 3d acceleration for me. - TexanPsycho, on 02/12/2008, -0/+5MrDo's referring to a Digg story submitted the other day where hackers redirected Stage6 to goatse, 4chan and the likes...
- arcticblue, on 02/12/2008, -0/+5It would be nice if that option was a bit more descriptive. What was wrong with labeling it "Snap Windows" or "Window Snapping" or something?
- stix213, on 02/12/2008, -0/+4I usually have about a dozen windows open at any given time, and I believe the Cube feature is pretty helpful. I drag unneeded windows to other sides of the cube, and easily click back and forth between the Windows using AWN.
Plus, if there ever was a Linux app that can actually grab the attention of the "normal" Windows & Mac users - Compiz Fusion is it! - DestroyFascism, on 02/12/2008, -0/+4Ubuntu at least comes with full screen magnification by default. Just tap the windows key (lol) and use the mouse wheel. Instantly turn a 500 X 300 pix image into a smooth 1680 * 1050 image.
- TheVirus, on 02/12/2008, -0/+4Knock knock
