I think that's missing the point of Digg. It's purpose is not to be a place where you can go to look something up. That's what Wikipedia and Google are for. The point of Digg is to bring to your attention things which you wouldn't have thought to look up. I'm running Ubuntu, but hadn't heard of anyone getting Compiz and XGL running, but now I'm going to try it out. Whoo-hoo! Dugg. - foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14The ones that hit frontpage from your list are over 100 days old. Its ok to revive some stuff. That one from 5 days ago didnt hit front-page
- shenki, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12thanks to guides like these, beginners *are* installing unstable tech like XGL. the Kororaa live cd is a great way to show of how shiny linux can be.
XGL is something that no desktop is going to install by default, ever. It's a transition technology used before EGL comes into existance. Even AIGLX is something that will take a while before it's turned on by default - although it's part of the Xorg 7.1 relase, drivers capable of the required GLX extension (texture_from_pixmap) only exist for intel cards. That said, nvidia has indicated that their next release series will inpliment the extesion, and given Redhat's involvement, AIGLX is the way of the near future. - shenki, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Argh. Editing timed out while I was spellchecking and re-writing that comment. Here is what I wanted to say:
Thanks to guides like these, beginners *are* installing unstable tech like XGL. Because of this, the Kororaa live cd is a great way to show of how shiny linux can be while leaving desktops to be rock solid as linux desktops can be.

(pet peve: the cool part is called compiz. XGL is just the underlying tech which enables compiz to do it's compositing. It's like saying "hey, look how cool the linux kernel is" - yeah, it allows you to run XGL which enables you to run compiz, but it's compiz, not the kernel that does the cool stuff) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6SuSE is the shining place to use XGL Compiz, so much easier to set up and doesn't crash as often as the other distro attempts. Not to take away from the people who do get it to work smoothly in other distros, in SuSE it "Just Works" :)
Quite a useful Tutorial if I used Ubuntu, but could possibly come in handy if I switch some vista Zealot in my house to Linux.in the quite distant but not super far away future. - playerx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Like designing wedding dresses?
Now seriously, stop ***** around, this is alpha technology it's not ready for prime time, so don't complain that it's hard to configure/set up, when it's ready it'll be dead easy.. - c0d3b0y, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6just watched robert and patrick show off xgl in openSUSE on dl.tv....incredible
- prockcore, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Funny, I don't remember being able to replace Aqua with something completely different in OSX.
I imagine that if it were even possible, it wouldn't be drag & drop.. there'd be some config editing. - mythicflux, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6"OS X has a polished and fully functional accelerated desktop right out of the box.
Vista has a polished and fully functional accelerated desktop right out of the box."
umm, Kororaa Linux has a polished and fully functional accelerated desktop right out of the box.
"Linux still has users ***** around with config files."
I don't seem to remember ever having to edit any config files on my grandmother's Ubuntu desktop. Of course I do remember editing some conf files on my iBook to configure some permissions correctly. (you know OSX being Unix based and all...) - burke, on 10/12/2007, -8/+12Try the Kororaa LiveCD instead. It's not stable enought yet to install on your main OS.
- shenki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If you've updated your mac with the latest firmware update (comes through software update, afaik), then using the bios emulation that boots windows may work for linux?
Alternatively, there is elilo, an EFI-aware version of LILO (a boot manager, ubuntu defaults to GRUB) that can be used. Have a look at this debian howto http://wiki.debian.org/MacMiniIntel, and also rEFIit, a EFI for booting different OS's using EFI http://refit.sourceforge.net/. Finally, there's the linux on intel-mac wiki http://www.mactel-linux.org/wiki/Main_Page.
My housemate just brought an intel iMac, I will have to convince her to let me try putting linux on it, if only to learn how :) - gookie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3For those who have an Intel graphics card, I suggest to install AIGLX....it's smoother and faster...
http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=145068&highlight=aiglx
I have this installed on my D400 (Intel i855G) and compiz runs better on AIGLX than on XGL.
:) - cdmarcus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4It completely broke the UI when I tried a week ago. The effects worked, though. I went back to the regular GNOME setup.
- MystaMax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I got it working on my Dell D620 w/ Ubuntu Dapper w/ not alot of troubles. Since I've got an Nvidia card, it helped to follow this tutorial @ Compiz.net http://www.compiz.net/viewtopic.php?id=652 alongside this wiki article.
- Philbert, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Another one?? It seems like 2 or 3 times a day there's a story about ubgumpo or whatever it's called
- shenki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Reading thru the guide, it's not exactly the best I've seen - for starters, intel graphics owners are able to use the much more stable AIGLX part of xorg 7.1, which neither the guide or that section of help.ubuntu.com suggests. (hence my non-dig, back before this hit the front page)
Secondly, it has downloading the cvs code as an option step?! Why would a user who just downloaded the debs want to do this? Fair enough for point it out, but not mid-way thru an install guide.
Not worth making it to the front page, especially considering how many xgl howto's have already been on digg. I'll wait for something that's clearer before recommending an article to a user wishing to try out xgl. Assuming I'd ever recommend it to them. - macewan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i've gone the aiglx route since it's easier on the resources with the intel i9* - previously tried xgl
feeling kinda frisky this morning i'll give this tut* a try :-) - DianeOfTheMoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm currently running this on my laptop (which is my primary machine) and once you turn off the dock and miniwin plugins it is rather stable and workable...I've had one display crash in about a month. As long as you have a recent NVidia, ATI or Intel card, you should be set.
Plus, the combination of effects really make GNOME feel slick and responsive, a trait I never thought I'd say about the window manager.
Anyway, it's been good enough for me to ditch windows, so here's to another convert. :) - toveling, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've not gotten any of this stuff working on my mac mini (intel). Kind of dissapointing, but oh well.
- rhettnyedotorg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i agree, this is not a stable system.
my gnome desklets don't play nice, and firefox seems to be running worse than IE 3.0 on a 486
nice looking though. i like to impress n00bs with it. - macewan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ok, just gave it a test - works fine. my graphics are too slow for its use but there was no problem with it actually working.
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dont the intel macs use EFI? does Ubuntu support EFI loading?
- i440, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2that particular guide didn't work on my machine when i tried it out
if you end up having problems i recommend this tutorial: http://www.compiz.net/viewtopic.php?id=652
it was the only one that worked for me - Phantom76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thanks for this tip. XGL ran slowly and seemed to be very buggy. I was about to uninstall and then I saw your reply. AIGLX works smoothly indeed on my Intel GMA graphics card.
- Sheco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Then again, a begginer CAN run korora LiveCD.
- eddyc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Try the second tutorial on this thread, worked for me http://www.compiz.net/viewtopic.php?id=389
- Mejogid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I really like suse, but the huge download & burn (this really annoyed me because I got 10 just before 10.1 came out), the dependence of the gnome desktop on KDE apps and the really busy looking menus (they're well organised, but there's a mix of gnome, tango, crystal and individual icons in there which looked bad to my eyes) pushed me slowly back to Ubuntu - that and my familiarity with Debian based systems. As with all distros, Suse is a combination of great features and trade offs, as shown by the huge fragmentation of Linux distros.
Also, I must agree that with XGL being a Novell developed technology I would expect it to work better under SUSE, although atleast we have easier binary driver installation ;p. Qinn's repositries are also a great help (he's a contributer to XGL, and has made a CVS based repositry updated at stable points for Ubuntu). - whiterajah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Can anyone confirm that they've managed to get this working by following this tutorial? I managed to hose my Ubuntu system a few days ago by trying out various different 'how to guides" and had to start over with a new installation. This was on a Toshiba notebook with ATI MOBILITY RADEON 7000 IGP graphics. Anyone know if that should be up to the task?
- whiterajah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@eddyc - thanks, will check it out. I was able to confirm that my notebook is up to the task by trying out the kororaa liveCD. Very cool stuff...
- CorpT, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2You know what would be cool? If we could just get every guide ever made put in digg. That way I could just search Digg for everything instead of google. That would be great!
- nickgarvey, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0I bet someone really cool must have wrote that guide...
- MonkeyLives, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3":Funny, I don't remember being able to replace Aqua with something completely different in OSX"
That's because it ***** works and OS X users are spending their time actually using their computers to do something useful. - foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -12/+5a "begginer" isnt gonna install an unstable OS
- dharm, on 10/12/2007, -15/+6the reason i posted this, is that anyone who is wanting to instal xgl on ubuntu already has a plethora of guides....
the only reason they wouldnt have found one, is if they didnt know how to use a search engine, and or did not know what xgl is to begin with.
- MonkeyLives, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2I guess the Xgl and compiz developers are too busy with more 'eye candy' to show how 'advanced' desktop Linux is than to be bothered making a useful product.
OS X has a polished and fully functional accelerated desktop right out of the box.
Vista has a polished and fully functional accelerated desktop right out of the box.
Linux still has users ***** around with config files. - bitshifter, on 10/12/2007, -16/+3For *****' sake, this is getting rediculous.
How many times have we seen this article, or one like it? Furthermore, how easy would this be to find on google? Really. *****. Easy.
This isn't del.icio.us. Don't digg it just because you might use it later (yeah ***** right).
And just because people saw you digg a Linux article isn't a good reason to digg it, how ***** old are you people? - dharm, on 10/12/2007, -31/+13http://digg.com/linux_unix/Guide_to_Install_Compiz_and_XGL_on_Ubuntu_Linux
