- blooby, on 11/01/2008, -3/+37This will probably get me buried, but this has been done better, with a short description of each and slightly larger screenshots, here: http://digg.com/linux_unix/History_of_Ubuntu_from_ ... (14 days ago)
- rolf, on 11/02/2008, -0/+24The release schedule isn't exactly a secret.
- Torx, on 11/02/2008, -4/+23Waste of my time, they couldve used warty warthog's screenshot for every release. Nothing visually has changed.
- feyded, on 11/01/2008, -1/+18It has certainly come a long way in 4 years.
- cmost, on 11/02/2008, -13/+26Do you people ever tire of glorifying Ubuntu? Has its appearance changed significantly over the past four years? No. We don't need this screenshot tour. Give it a rest.
- inactive, on 11/02/2008, -4/+17/s?
- Wandel, on 11/02/2008, -0/+11I'll save you some future trouble: Jaunty Jackalope comes out in April next year.
- rolf, on 11/02/2008, -4/+14I used Ubuntu since it came out, maybe the looks are similiar, but it has really evolved not only itself but the linux desktop as well.
I still remember having to mount CDs in a linux distro manuallyXD - DomZy, on 11/02/2008, -1/+10That article is much better!
- theadvinci, on 11/02/2008, -2/+11Ubuntu has one of the coolest logos... ever.
- DteK, on 11/02/2008, -0/+8We could do this for most distro's. I been using Fedora since it was RedHat 7.2 and it too has come a long way since those days.
- Bluemotion, on 11/02/2008, -2/+10i totally agree with you here cmost
thank god i wasnt the only one who noticed they have barely changed - forknife, on 11/01/2008, -8/+16I voted totally awesome
- dorkdork777, on 11/02/2008, -1/+9No, it really has. But the best thing is that the interface is just about the same now as it was 9 releases ago - they're doing a remarkable job at making it better, while keeping it the same. Anyone who's had experience with the very first release of Ubuntu can easily use the latest, and they would notice a multitude of usability improvements along the way.
Now try and apply that to Windows. - brettalton, on 11/02/2008, -0/+6Hahahahaha, those are MY screenshots!

User:Altonbr - inactive, on 11/02/2008, -1/+6The wallpaper has REALLY come a long way.
Dapper Drake was the biggest shift but after it only the wallpaper has changed. In intrepid Ibex they have put some attention to details tho, like the corners of the lock screen and stuff. - jadrian, on 11/02/2008, -2/+7"I used Ubuntu since it came out, maybe the looks are similiar"
Which means you basically agree with the user you are replying to.
All the rest has absolutely nothing to do with his point. - oblique63, on 11/02/2008, -1/+6man, lets hope you never find out about mac users; something tells me that's gonna be terribly agonizing for you...
- turezky, on 11/02/2008, -1/+6IMHO, no significant difference since 6.06 :(
- miketowninc, on 11/02/2008, -4/+8I love how nothing changes except the background (which are hot!)
- aspirax, on 11/02/2008, -2/+6So, in order the please the masses the graphical interface must change dramatically from release to release instead of the core and application support?
Spoken by true Windows users. - jordanschwich54, on 11/02/2008, -0/+4This is a worthless article, a couple of screen-shots of the desktops. It might have been interesting if the article explained what changed between every release.
- Bluemotion, on 11/02/2008, -1/+5i think most people have come to ignore apple fanboys.
- ronaldmonster, on 11/02/2008, -1/+4I can go to Wikipedia and type in Ubuntu myself thank you. Buried.
- oblique63, on 11/02/2008, -0/+3I don't see what all this crazy ubuntu bashing is about... sure, a full out 'in-depth' sceenshot tour is a bit pointless for every single release, but this an archive of the gradual evolution of ubuntu that actually spans a reasonable amount of time...
I first tried ubuntu with 'Feisty Fawn', and I can't say Im too knowledgeable on anything earlier than that release, so I found this to be an interesting look at the origins of this cool OS... - Stonekeeper, on 11/02/2008, -0/+3I just removed my bottom bar in about 30 secs after i realised i totally agreed with you. It was a piece of cake. Try it.
- abbathdoom, on 11/02/2008, -0/+3This page sums up why the brown has to go.
- fuckinmetal, on 11/02/2008, -0/+3What do you mean, "you people"?
- brettalton, on 11/02/2008, -0/+3Check this Wikipedia article then: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Ubuntu_rel ...
I took screenshots of Nautilus (the file browser) to show progression of the theme as well. - bluechild, on 11/03/2008, -0/+2Huh ?
sudo passwd root
What are you going to do with root access if you can't figure this out on your own ? - brettalton, on 11/02/2008, -0/+2Wow, I did the same thing for the Wikipedia article here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Ubuntu_rel ...
Except I added Nautilus in there so you could get an idea of the theme as well. Looking at the wallpaper gives you so little information...
Maybe I should just post the Wikipedia article next time? - cjnkns, on 11/03/2008, -0/+2They all look the same to me - besides the background of course.
- inactive, on 11/02/2008, -0/+2Like always working on the next version and never quite filling the gaps in the older versions while unleashing every-more obviously holey software. And they wonder why users consider a switch to something that doesn't seem to be majorly changing. Vista takes everything I dislike about XP compared to Windows 2000(the pros don't outweigh the cons for me) and magnifies it 10x. And Aero becomes old after a week... and Vista along with it, more or less, around that same time. Windows 7 is said to be quicker... wouldn't that be nice... if it comes through.
- blooby, on 11/03/2008, -0/+2OK, I now recommend that wikipedia article instead ;)
- OropheR, on 11/02/2008, -1/+3Ok, the brown color is one thing...but this is a detail only. This color can be changed afterward and you can choose whatever color you want after.
But I would have one suggestion:No more double menu barre, one at bottom, one at top: It is really wasting too much space on the screen, especially smaller laptop screen. The content displayed is more important than the GUI which should be as discreet as possible, but easily accessible. The ideal would be no menu barre at all.
Solution:The Ubuntu logo is great and its design & shape could be used as interface... ie: when you press on the Windows Key, you got the "start" menu appearing. Do the same on Ubuntu, have the Ubuntu Logo appearing when you press the Windows Key (Ubuntu Key in that case) from which you are able to select and launch any softwares, access any folders or properties. Press again and it's gone. The whole screen is here for the content you want/need to have on your screen.
I think this would not be too hard to do. And it would be handy. - infiniphunk, on 11/02/2008, -0/+2Indeed. Because you know, Windows sure goes through some heavy changes every 6 months.
- groovezilla, on 11/02/2008, -0/+2Not better, just done differently and that link appeals to some more technically adept peeps. The screenshots of the desktop without the folders reflected the changing styles of the Ubuntu UI which, I argue, is part of the great experience Linux distros.
- Dou6, on 11/02/2008, -2/+4I was a long time linux user, and liked Ubuntu, but it's time for an out of the box visual upgrade. Yes, the backround has changed, but the rest just looks like ***** from 1995, time to move primarily to one of the options that have been out for a while that rival OSX and Vista, but in many cases look even better. The problem is, they were always a PITA to make work and remain stable in linux. I will stick with OSX until I see something big. I know I will be dugg down, and that OSX itself is getting stale, and it's not all about the GUI. But good lord, linux needs to take a big step forward.
- dorkdork777, on 11/02/2008, -0/+2Linux doesn't have to be hard. The idea of Ubuntu is to make it usable for Joe the *****, not just geeks.
- infiniphunk, on 11/02/2008, -1/+3"Dur, Ubuntu always looks the same! Dur! Always brown! Looks like 1995, dur, what's with the funny animal names??? I don't get it!!!..."
People, if you don't like Ubuntu, or these stories that get submitted to Digg, then don't bother commenting on them. Digg the story down, move on with your lives. - krc1, on 11/03/2008, -0/+11. Right Click on the desktop
2. Select "Change Desktop Background"
3. Click the green one on the left.
4. Close
5. Good night - klitzbtc, on 11/02/2008, -0/+1Correction, "A visual desktop tour of gnome through the 9 Ubuntu releases"
- inactive, on 11/03/2008, -0/+1I have to poop now.
- insllvn, on 11/03/2008, -0/+1Why? It doesn't look like it has changed since Dapper Drake, and it has never changed dramatically. The DarkRoom theme is pretty nifty, but I had to change the color of text from white to gray for usability reasons. I voted "I don't care about the theme" because I rarely stick with the default. I predict I will get bored of DarkRoom in about a week and be back to gnome-look.org
- tnwake, on 11/02/2008, -1/+2Doesn't really matter when they still won't provide an option for me to have root access to MY OWN DAMN SYSTEM! There's no way I'm using a crippled system like that.
- insllvn, on 11/03/2008, -0/+1What do YOU mean, "you people?"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAlVKgl_zCQ - sahaskatta, on 11/02/2008, -0/+1The second one looks pretty nice!
- werries, on 11/03/2008, -0/+1I find it interesting. Ring of brown to lighter browns/tan. and then the dots are the same colors shifted counter-clockwise one color.
Simple, but elegant. :) - werries, on 11/03/2008, -0/+1clean install
- cjnkns, on 11/03/2008, -0/+1Funny - but I agree.
Not a damn thing is different with Ubuntu. Looks the EXACT same to me. -
