- colindunn, on 11/04/2007, -1/+81I am not a Linux user, but every time I see these reviews I am blow away by the increasing sophistication and visual appeal of this free operating system. If I didn't use OSX I would be on Linux, no question.
- InvisibleKid, on 11/04/2007, -0/+60Now that's the spirit, not bashing other OS, that's nice!
- cdmarcus, on 10/22/2007, -2/+45It's not like Windows, where it can go 6 years between releases. Ubuntu is on a six-month release schedule, so you shouldn't expect changes as drastic as XP to Vista going from, say, Feisty to Gutsy.
- trogdoor, on 10/22/2007, -1/+27That's not how things work in the Linux world.
- Stijngysemans, on 10/16/2007, -0/+23on remark though: deskbar isn't using beagle, I think it's using Tracker as a back end
integrated search based on indexing is wonderful! - stutimandal, on 10/16/2007, -0/+21Wow, GUI for dual monitor support! Finally!
- warriorscot, on 10/17/2007, -0/+19It is an update it doesn't take anything away and only adds functionality, the only sensible reason not to upgrade from an existing OS of anything is if the new version isn't as good as the one before.
- Eallan, on 10/16/2007, -1/+19I'm just sad enough to use all 3 (Windows, linux, OSX). :(
- misterjangles, on 10/16/2007, -5/+20I probably will install it just because I am irrationally compelled to always upgrade. But, to be honest this looks like more of a service pack type of upgrade with a few visibility-based features thrown in.
- jdhore1, on 10/16/2007, -0/+13Try again with VLC...Totem/Gstreamer sucks with mkv files, WMV's and some Quicktime
- Hobo97, on 10/16/2007, -0/+12I'm trying to make Ubuntu my primary OS. I like it for a variety of reasons - tinkering (I cut my teeth on DOS and early Apples (Apple IIe anyone?) so fixing stuff/getting things working is actually quite fun to me), customizing, eyecandy etc. Like Protoss said, verbose error messages are always a plus. I've found the VirtualBox does a pretty decent job of lightweight apps. Unless I'm getting pretty heavy with Photoshop I can do most work with it through that (otherwise I have to switch back to Windows - but I'm talking about working on 500MB+ PSD files). If you do any sort of web development and/or server management linux has a plethora of tools at your disposal that make it easier than windows IMO.
- edzilla, on 10/16/2007, -1/+12The main difference being that they wait until the distribution is finished and tested before actually releasing it...
- p0tent1al, on 10/16/2007, -0/+10Honestly if I had the money, I would get each OS, because each one offers something to the table. Although you can't help but to root for linux, being the only free one that keeps closing the gap between the other operating systems.
- srg13, on 10/16/2007, -1/+11It's not Linux's job to support them - that's like getting angry with Microsoft because I can't run Final Cut Pro in Windows...
- Lunarbunny, on 10/16/2007, -3/+12Yeah, but I'd say wait a couple weeks anyway so you're not dealing with 2kbps downloads off of the repositories.
- edzilla, on 10/16/2007, -0/+9There are enough mirrors out there to make sure you don't run out of bandwidth.
- cdmarcus, on 10/16/2007, -0/+9First of all, it's Tracker, not Beagle, in Gutsy. Second of all, the "user indicator" in the panel is actually a user switcher, allowing the user to switch between accounts.
- openguru, on 10/16/2007, -1/+9I have been searching for Gutsy-RC review. Thanks.
- carrett, on 10/16/2007, -1/+9A few of my frequently-used-programs have moved from GTK1 to GTK2, which is awesome. Finally I'll have a consistently nice looking system.
- neko, on 10/16/2007, -0/+7I wonder if APT could be modified to include some sort of bittorrent: repository line, or a modified version of the protocol (seeing as it's usually lots of small files rather than one monolithic package). That would be pretty sweet, and things would go FASTER on the release day!
- mossblaser, on 10/16/2007, -0/+7Quite so, I myself actually went from Mac OS to Linux (i have a 4 month old mac book which now runs Linux and MacOS (when i need photoshop for whatever reason)) but I definitely prefer it to windows, mainly because of speed though, I like linux over both because of the amount of freedom you have to customize things.
- adt41287, on 10/16/2007, -1/+7"Although you can't help but to root for linux"
no pun intended? - lilianatota, on 10/16/2007, -0/+6I am wondering to see which computer giant manufacture will pre-load this powerful software in their machine.
- euvirtual, on 10/16/2007, -0/+6They fixed it recently, I think. At least that's what I gather from this blog post: http://blogs.gnome.org/dcbw/2007/10/15/networkmana ...
But not in time to get into gutsy, though. Maybe as a backport. - canthraxp, on 10/16/2007, -0/+6A new kernel is a ***** of prgoress, more that you'll ever expect from a SP.
- arjie, on 10/17/2007, -1/+7I is not happy at all with you. Aren't those from the ubuntu artwork pages? They're nice but why put them on a different page and then stick ads on that?
- newbill123, on 10/16/2007, -6/+12Some form of dyslexia I guess, but I always misread Gutsy as Gusty and think of a flatulent Gibbon.
I very much enjoyed the Feisty Faun release party in my town and can't wait for the upcoming Gutsy one. I just hope it's not at a Mexican restaurant. - aaronm67, on 10/17/2007, -0/+6Not especially. If you have applications you like and are used to, you should probably stick with XP. If you use more advanced features in photoshop, you wont find a Linux replacement, and you wont be able to run most games.
Reasons to switch:
1) There are a few applications that are far better then anything else like them (Amarok and Basket come to mind)
2) If you take the time to learn perl/bash scripting, you can learn to automate almost anything, and it doesn't take long to become command line proficient.
3) Networking. If you have a lot of external storage, it can be pretty inconvenient to have to mount these as separate drives in Windows. Linux makes it convenient to mount networked media on the same drive as non-networked media.
4) Configuration - it can be a pain in the ass to configure how your desktop looks in XP, but it is done very easily in most Linux distros. Animations/effects, color scheme, etc can typically be configured pretty easily.
You will have to learn to use entirely different applications, and it's not really worth it unless one of those 4 things seems interesting to you. - Protoss, on 10/16/2007, -2/+7Not really. I am using XP right now, switched from Feisty around the time Bioshock came out. Wine was bugging out on me, and so I just booted into XP. I'm switching back because I like Linux in general, I like being able to find out exactly why my computer all of a sudden locked up, or so and so program died.
If you are fine with XP, stick with it, you might want to at least give the LiveCD a try. - neko, on 10/16/2007, -0/+5Thank goodness.. I had some trouble with Beagle. It filled up my homedir's drive with logfiles. Hopefully Tracker understands the concept of symlinks better...
- hamalicious, on 10/16/2007, -0/+5I have my Macbook triple booted with OS X, Vista and Gutsy. I've been so impressed with gutsy that I've decided to use it for a family desktop. Only complaint is not being able to get the wireless working with it on my mac others have had success with madwifi but I can't seem to make it work. All in all an awesome Linux for almost everyone.
- AdHaR, on 10/16/2007, -1/+6And it seems you misread Fawn too...
- 350Zed, on 10/16/2007, -0/+5I see WPA support... is that WPA *and* WPA2, or just the older WPA standard?
- fac3less, on 10/16/2007, -1/+6It runs under WINE without issues.
There's a few oddities with sync'ing fonts & whatnot to Photoshop but otherwise... flawless :) - Malachai, on 10/16/2007, -0/+4Also, try using totem-xine rather than totem-gstreamer. (Check Synaptic, or 'sudo apt-get install totem-xine')
- arjie, on 10/16/2007, -0/+4Wow, seriously?! Damn! Awesome improvement. This makes me so happy :)
- andywebb95, on 10/22/2007, -0/+4IMHO this is an excellent distro for desktop/laptop use.
I am running the RC right now on my desktop and I am pretty happy with it.
Everything installed smoothly and also I had no problems with my dual boot setup.
I think if you are using 7.06 right now it is IMHO worth the upgrade. - HalfGiraffe, on 10/17/2007, -1/+5Uh. Dell maybe?
- axxs, on 10/16/2007, -0/+4yea, I use linux for work and everything else as it's just better I find, bar games. My XP partition is just for games that cost too much to give up and won't port 8-)
- skyshock1, on 10/16/2007, -1/+5Have they fixed the nm-applet (network manager) so that you can assign yourself a static IP address on a wireless network encrypted using WPA??? This is a HUGE bug IMO that has about 4,302,949,035 bug reports filed.
- dcherryholmes, on 10/17/2007, -0/+4Photoshop works really well for me under Wine, and didn't require any tweaking. Just a couple of clicks and it was up and running.
- trogdoor, on 10/17/2007, -0/+47.04, the only .6 was 6.06 because it was delayed.
- andycr512, on 10/16/2007, -0/+4What, you're installing it?
(Couldn't help myself.) - Morm, on 10/16/2007, -0/+4Yes, WPA and WPA2
- havokzero, on 10/16/2007, -2/+5I already have XP installed, so I wouldn't be saving any money by switching to Ubuntu. Also, I'm a Photoshop user and PC gamer. Is there any worthwhile reason for people in my situation to consider Ubuntu? Any must-have features?
- jnev, on 10/16/2007, -1/+4if only Adobe supported linux, I'd dump OS X right now and just ship to ubuntu. as it is I used ubuntu (dual-booted with windows) for 3 years before getting tired of dual-booting and switching to OS X.
- dinostabOMG, on 10/16/2007, -0/+3Compiz?
- neko, on 10/16/2007, -2/+58.04 will apparently be Hardy Heron, which I keep misreading as Handy Heroin xD
- srg13, on 10/16/2007, -0/+3Definitely dual boot at first - Adobe apps are the only thing I use Windows for... I might end up getting a Mac (and Final Cut Studio and Shake) for that kind of stuff in the future though.
- christophocles, on 10/16/2007, -1/+4I'd like to see if Ubuntu will finally detect the native resolution of my laptop screen (1680x1050) and switch to it after installation without manually adding a modeline to the xorg.conf file. Sabayon 3.4f is the first distro I have tried that gets this right. Also it would be pretty nice if they could fix the bullsh*t you have to go through just to have proper resolutions on an Intel 945. My buddy brought over his laptop and I screwed around with the "915resolution" script for hours and never got it right.
That said, Linux continues to make great strides all around. -
