- puelocesar, on 01/11/2008, -0/+11That's a nice article. I really like Oxygen ...
ButI think I'm waiting for kde4.1, that one will be great - Purin, on 01/11/2008, -0/+11I'm using KDE 4.0.0 right now, and so far I am kind of upset at the severe lack of customizability that I have been so used to in KDE 3.5.8. Other than that, and the fact that no KDE4 apps will accept my root password (maybe it has something to do with me being on Kubuntu and not actually having a root password?), I am really enjoying the changes they've made. Compiz Fusion works perfectly fine, as do all my old apps ( except yaKuake :( ), but I think I am going to stick with KDE 3.5.8 for just a little longer, at least until they implement customization features for panel(s).
- Aythun, on 01/11/2008, -0/+9An algorithm.
- puelocesar, on 01/11/2008, -0/+4Are you referring to kde3? I really don't like it... it's too cluttered
If ia have time i'll make an alternative taskbar, so I can use it... I really like dockers instead of taskbar - JohnFlux, on 01/11/2008, -0/+4Aseigo wrote a blog about that. Basically it is because of bugs in xorg. Apps haven't yet been really stress-testing the argb visuals so there was bound to some bugs there.
- mikedoth, on 01/11/2008, -0/+4Will KDE4 apps look like this in Gnome?
- ahughes, on 01/11/2008, -0/+3As someone who, prior to Ubuntu 7.10, only used KDE; I will stick with my Gnome/AWN configuration.
- Klowner, on 01/11/2008, -0/+3Consider it KDE4 (4.1) Beta, it certainly shows promise, but I can't figure out how to move my panel to the top of the screen. But I ain't complaining, it's a work in progress still.
- Klowner, on 01/11/2008, -0/+3Unless you're talking about Gnome
- bejayel, on 01/11/2008, -0/+3Wow its looks great. Exactly like KDE3 except black. I am going to give KDE4 a chance when it comes out. See if it gets me to switch from gnome. All the other versions have successfully failed to do so to this point.
- PFS1, on 01/11/2008, -0/+2Any resource available to help learning how to create plasmoids? I've been looking forward to being able to write plasmoids to completely customize the desktop...to me, that would make up for the current lack of customizability. Does anyone have some info?
- ours, on 01/11/2008, -0/+2Try AWN (Avant Windows Manager). It looks great, works fine except some applets which are cool but a bit beta.
- puelocesar, on 01/11/2008, -0/+2take a look at kde's techbase:

It's a little incomplete right now, but it's enought to starting making your own plasmoids - JohnFlux, on 01/11/2008, -0/+2It's not a design decision to make it have less customizably, it's just because it's a 0.0 version. 4.1 will be a lot more customizable.
- secleinteer, on 01/11/2008, -0/+2Yeah, the lack of customizability pissed me off right away. I'll definitely stay with KDE 3.5.8 for now, but watching the upcoming releases to see if they are actually usable.
- tripzero, on 01/11/2008, -0/+2I really like Oxygen too. I'm not sure I could live without it. To add, I don't know if anyone can live without it :p
KDE4 is looking really nice. - mfearby, on 01/11/2008, -0/+1Perhaps you're happy with GNOME because maybe its idea of locked-in preferences actually suits you, but for me, I could never put up with GNOME. For starters I can't rubber-band select files in details view with Nautilus, I have to hold shift then click again to select a range (about as annoying as File Manager in Windows 3.11 for Christ's sake).
You also can't adjust the icon spacing on the desktop so that you're forced to have them 1" in from the left and right edges of the screen, which annoys me to no end because I like seeing my favourite icons around the edge of the screen when I have lots of windows open, such that clicking on an application is a one-step glance/click action.
You also can't specify any icons in the GNOME systray to hide. GNOME's systray is 0% configurable, much like the rest of GNOME where most preference screens have one or two radio buttons and that's it. GNOME is about as dumbed-down as OS X and so I could never live in such a wasteland.
Whilst I'm hoping that KDE will add more customisation options, especially with the panel size, translucent edges, etc, I have much more hope that KDE will be customisable than GNOME will ever be. - harrynewman, on 01/11/2008, -1/+2'Will you be installing it tomorrow?'
Nah.. - schestowitz, on 01/11/2008, -3/+4Have you considered running the two in tandem? You can get the best of both worlds. That's what I do at home and KDE 4 is a masterpiece (with a few tolerable quirks, no cracks).
- sybesis, on 01/11/2008, -0/+1you said the word that nobody should says...

"Use Kasbar and put your favourite icons in a peripheral (external) panel to make a nifty 'dock' (Apple terminology). Just my 50 pence anyway..."
I don't think you can do it with kde4, and man, that thing is very ugly
"Try AWN (Avant Windows Manager). "
I know awn very well, but it won't be well integrated with plasma - sybesis, on 01/11/2008, -0/+1probably...it will look just like qt will draw them. But the problem is if qt4 will work well with gnome.
- Purin, on 01/11/2008, -0/+1It seems as if the desktop effects are a little iffy as well; I am getting glitchy windows with a handful of things activated. It doesn't affect functionality all that much, but it is definitely annoying.
- schestowitz, on 01/11/2008, -3/+3> Are you referring to kde3? I really don't like it... it's too cluttered
Hmmm... I can't argue with an opinion, but I've always found it quite elegant and it /just worked/. Sometimes, in the early days, the huge amount of functionality was daunting, but in a very good way which always leaves you curious and opens the door to increased productivity.
> If ia have time i'll make an alternative taskbar, so I can use it... I really like dockers instead of taskbar
Use Kasbar and put your favourite icons in a peripheral (external) panel to make a nifty 'dock' (Apple terminology). Just my 50 pence anyway...
Make KDE what suits /you/. It's very flexible. - droit, on 12/11/2008, -0/+0thansk for sharing

http://www.dizikom.com - sybesis, on 01/11/2008, -1/+1What i love best about kde users is that they are always complaining about lack of customizabilty with gnome...and now kde is just like gnome.
While seriously i never understood this. What does kde have much more than gnome...i can fully customize the gtk apparence...text size and more...metacity is doing everything i need nothing more...
Menu aren't that customizable but seriously why would i mess with a well done menu. gnome-session alow you to do freaking cool things...i don't seriously know what kde give me more except a more complex user interface that doesn't give me much more useful features. i would say that the only thing that looks great to me is the new kwin beyond that...its still kde nothing that interesting...
Gnome->Simple Just work - robmiller99, on 12/02/2008, -0/+0We should always look forward

- InorganicMatter, on 01/11/2008, -9/+1KDE4 is going to be for Linux what Panther was for Mac OS. Linux is finally going to be a usable day-to-day desktop computer operating system instead of the current joke it is now: a CLI server OS with a sloppy and buggy GUI bolted on top.
