- arcane81, on 11/17/2008, -0/+2Yes you are correct about the back-porting that fedora does. Overall though Fedora appears to be a much smoother and faster gui. One thing I was surprised was that Fedora actually picked up my inspiron 2200 video card and allowed compiz to work without any problems. Intrepid blacklisted most of my hardware. 3 year old laptop that Ubuntu is no longer going to support for compiz. Fedora 10 and OpenSuse 11.1 beta 5 both still support it. 1 major factor for that machine i guess. I am just glad I dont have to go back to XP...hehe

- arcane81, on 11/14/2008, -1/+2I do have to admit, I have been using Ubuntu for about 2 years now because I like the package management with apt-get and the semi-polished user interface (non-geeky). plus the ability to setup samba / apache. After trying out Fedora 10 I have to admit, it sure is nice to see a default theme that is not brown. Ubuntu just lost one of my workstations to Fedora 10. And let me tell you this, Fedora has 11 more days till launch. In my opinion their dev cycle is much smoother and cleaner than Ubuntu's. I have seen only small minimal changes in the last few days. During the last few days of Ubuntu Ibex,I was downloading 400MB per day of updates.
- smotpoker, on 11/15/2008, -0/+1I haven't touched Fedora as a desktop in years. You may be correct that their dev cycle is "smoother" in some respects but they support less software, it takes them too long to support it ("current" releases of redhat packages tend to be a few versions behind debian or source -based distributions) and the software is too tightly integrated with the distribution (rendering vendor-supplied docs/info useless more than other distros and complicating custom installs).
Fedora may be a bit better now or for some people but IMO it was a pain for advanced users who like to customize their system and implement new software/features asap
