- Derrekito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+26just waiting for 3d support in general! Im really upset with ATI and their lack of support!
- Greyarea, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23Kwipper: If you think Windows is the answer then you obviously don't understand what the question is.
- warrenfalk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17That's like saying that the solution to the side effects of chemo are to die of cancer.
- quietglow, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17Perhaps the single biggest obstacle to running a completely OSS platform is the fact that any sort of decent graphics performance demands the use of a proprietary driver. We need a graphics card with completely open specs and a matching OSS driver.
BTW, there is nothing like getting lectured for using OSX by a linux person running their pimped graphics card with proprietary drivers. - inkubux, on 10/12/2007, -7/+20NEVER I would rather buy a new card then to switch to Windows...
fortunatly I always buy NVIDIA cards - SniperSlap, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16Here's a hint:
No 64 bit support.
ATI has dropped in my books considerably since about two years ago. They just haven't been able to get their act together. Their cards have not inspired me for quite some time.
Their lack of 64 bit Linux support is huge in my eyes. It shows that they barely have a handle on their own video cards. - EmmEff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I've heard from insiders that ATI has trouble keeping video driver developers on the Windows side, so that may explain the lack of attention given to Linux. It's a shame, since they have what seems to be very decent hardware. As a devoted Linux user, I cannot help but recommend nVidia-based cards though.
- armbo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10i'm still waiting for 3d support for the igp 320m
- t35t0r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11have the freezes on logout stopped?
- AdamJones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8SniperSlap: I think only the old XFree86 modules do not support 64 bit.
Newer ones do.
ati-driver-installer-8.25.18-x86_64.run

"Note: 64 bit driver support for XFree86 version 4.1 and 4.2 are not supported." - nick58b, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Phoronix has a good overview of the new drivers here: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=480&num=1
- devoinregress, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8because Windows has its own slew of problems as does every OS.
Linux:
+:stibility, speed, coustomizable, will run on anything (not including ATI), free
-:poor support from developers, can be overwhelming to newbies
Windows:
+:will run most commertial software, fairly easy to use.
-:viruses, can be unstable, expensive+office+other basic programs.
osX:
+:standardized hardware, almost no viruses, secure, stable, supportive user community, UI
-:standardized hardware, some but little support from software developers, can be pricey but a lot is bundled - nbx909, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7yeah my next card will be an nvidia card just because of the easy support.
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I hope so.. I can't get any of ATI's drivers to work with sleep/hibernate on my mobility 9600. I have to use Xorg's 2D only driver to have a functional linux laptop.
- jfryman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I wish this would happen as well! However, it looks like the 320/340M are based on the old Radeon 7500.... and I guess that the little specs that ATI has released on that chipset are more than sufficient.
Well, that line of thinking really makes me want to consider NVidia over ATI for my next laptop video chipset. Companies may not listen to petitions and rants... but they do listen to voting with $$ - nemilar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Oh god, the freezes...I just setup Gentoo on my friend's machine (Radeon Pro 9800) and it took me at least a week to get rid of that. I believe we used a different version of Xorg, and that solved the problem.
If you'd like me to send you some more info, e-mail me (my digg username at gmail) and I'll get back to you with our fix. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Best advice I've heard on getting drivers for ATI cards working in Linux:
"Requirements: you and a friend
Instructions: Remove the ATI card from the system and each of you grab one end of the card. Pull in opposite directions. The person holding the largest of the two resulting pieces gets to buy the new nvidia card" - pucosk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@deadbaby: hmm, looks like this issue is still not resolved, well I guess we notebook users will have to wait a bit longer.
- Rickler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6All new cards like Geforce and Radeon are optimized for DirectX. Linux and OSX users should be buying Quatros and FireGLs that are optimized for OpenGL.
- bloodylip, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Since they have support for Xorg7, I'd hope that XGL works now. Gentoo Wiki has a mobility X1600 working with the 8.24.?? unstable drivers.
Either way, doesn't matter to me. I've got all NVidia cards. - leohart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4YES. Now I can take back my comment on the nVidia Linux driver article (buying nVidia card only because only them were supporting Linux).
Now, only if I can get my XGL and Compiz going with these 'native' driver (easily). - Derrekito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3GOOD LUCK I'm still trying to get DRI to work!
- mDot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Unfortunately, ATi can barely write decent drivers for Windows. A better answer is voting with your dollars and buying Nvidia.
- ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Ati has always been ***** when it comes to drivers (Rage Fury Maxx, anyone?). The only company worse is Creative.
At least with Nvidia's stuff, you can actually get Linux to work. - CreepingDeath, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Ya, ATI lost my business when I bought a 9800pro, and a few months later tried to set it up under linux... well after fighting for a week to get 3d rendering enabled, I sold it to a windows usin friend and bought a nvidia 6800gt. I've not even considered switching back since, and probably won't. Crappy ATI drivers just cost them 1 video card sale per year (about average for me)
- mailman-zero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Amen! RMS 4 EVER!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I have had my fair share of problems with ATI drivers and Linux. In fact, there was a day I swore I wouldn't buy ATI products anymore because of their poor support for Linux. However, in all honesty, I think things are changing. ATI has in the past year or more significantly improved their support for Linux and they seem to be on track to continue that trend. Even if you choose Nvidia over ATI, we all still benefit from ATI stepping up to the plate on this. We need competition in the Linux arena so that both companies and perhaps others will continue to focus on Linux... else lose the potential business from Linux users who are generally a very techie crowd. Nvidia and ATI know this and they need to impress this crowd or else lose their support. In all fairness, I welcome ATI to the ballgame. Maybe they won't win but at least the other teams have to play hard to stay ahead.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Intel graphics, which are completely open source, also happen to have about 50% of the market (roughly ATI and nVidia's market share combined).
The performance certainly isn't good enough for top end games, but it's good enough for most folks. - schmedly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Never mind
- debian_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=150854
It's topic says its aimed at the x700, but I run an x800 and XGL/Compiz finally stopped hard locking my machine after using the configuration in my xorg.conf; inface, after the one incident with locking was fixed, XGL/Compiz has run rock solid on my Dapper install to this very day. - llbbl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Three words, "Shock and Awe"
- DataPath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's fixed for me
- seanmc303, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Better late than never. Last night I was just starting to get really tiered of the slow 2D and 3D support for my Radeon 9000. Hopefully this driver will help. Fingers crossed for XGL support :)
- nailbunny, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6windows isn't the solution, it's the problem.
- Derrekito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Their Linux drivers work great!
- stmiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm waiting for PPC Linux drivers. Or just release the source, please ATI! PPC Linux ATI users are without 3D support.
- CholeraJasna, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Man, ATI drivers suck. I love the idea of the all-in-wonder cards with TV tuner, but getting the ***** thing working is a frigging nightmare. Plus why are the drivers so huge, who needs 20mb for a driver?!??? It's probably spyware.
And to top it off, ATI provides absolutely no TV support for the AIW cards on linux, so I'm never buying another one. - netant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Did ATI resolve the problem where xv doesn't work, even though the dri acceleration does? Yeah, explicitly turning on videooverlay and turning off opengloverlay switches doesn't make a difference. This has affected me with my video card (R350) and Xpress 200 chipset.
- aztechclan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just had Xgl working in Ubuntu Dapper with an X1800 Radeon. With the ubuntu .debs no less! And this was likely before these new drivers were even released. just my 2 cents.
- natmaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Running SuSE 10.1, I still can't have XGL start with KDM. The only way to run it is by starting it manually (IE, doing an Xgl command from the command line, kinda like 'startx').
See http://en.opensuse.org/Xgl_Troubleshooting for confirmation of this bug. Apparently ati still hasn't done anything about it. If someone has a hack to get around this issue, please tell me. - lsandberg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I had no end of display problems due to ATI when setting up my laptop for ubuntu. Once installed though everyhing is working fine, except for the one thing that is curiously still missing. TV out will continue to be unsupported on thier mobility chips, but for some reason they went ahead and enabled it on thier desktop chips. Maybe i'm just bitter, but it seems to me that it is a little more neccesary on laptops. TV out support is why I'm wasting 15 gigs on my HD for XP. Hopefully this will be fixed next month, but for now no digg.
- antigoogle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3won't use it till they opensource it!
- Velaru, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@EmmEff
When it comes to D3D Ati have great cards, but when it comes to OpenGL they are just the red headed stepchild in the market. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wait.. I have an ATI Radeon x850xt, will i be able to use xgl/compiz with these drivers?
- spritom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1On the Windows side, I ran 3dfx, then hopped to nVidia through the GeForce 4's, then when their FX silliness started, I followed with ATI for a while (still have a nice X800 humming right along on a Windows box), and now I'm back with nVidia again.
But on the Linux boxes, it's always been nVidia due to driver support.
The video card industry doesn't look like a friendly one with rapid cycle times in playing King of the Mountain. It's nice to see ATI getting into this side of the business and when approaching my next Linux build-up, I'll take off the "nVidia-only" rule and evaluate ATI as well...depending upon the needs of that build. - dukeinlondon, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6Wouldn't touch ATI gear with a barge pole cause of the feedback I read here and there but happy to see that the driver is still being worked on and hopefully progressing.
- liquidjamm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1My last 2-3 cards were ATI, primarily becuase of built in TV in/out. I had to mess around for about 3 days to get 3d working on SuSE10, only because I am noobing in Linux. Of course there some problems like no TV suport or recompiling drivers after kernel update, but overall I don't see how ATI is worse then anything else available on the market (pop).
- fanen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i wonder, my ati card used to read as "mobility radeon 7200" back in the windows days, now on ubuntu 5.10 it tells me "radeon 9000", i tried installing fglrx, x server falied to start..., so i changed back to the default, and uninstalled it. since buying an nvidia ain't an option (no money, can't upgrade laptop) and using windows ain't an option (no money), i'm stuck praying that something useful will come my way in the near future... (don't know when i'll get new machine either)!
- LeLoup, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1You beat me to it!
I ran across this in the morning and came to digg to submit it.
It's about time they woke up. Hope they're more stable than what's available for Windows. - trollenlord, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0You will never use it then.
