- inactive, on 10/07/2008, -1/+34Holy ***** I thought this was going to be stupid stuff like "empty the recycle bin," but so much of this is helpful. Up until now when it gets to be too much I just do clean installs (I know, I know)...
- nightman, on 10/07/2008, -0/+32Of course there is: Checkinstall - http://www.asic-linux.com.mx/~izto/checkinstall/ (it should be in repository too)
From the page:
"A lot of people has asked me how can they remove from their boxes a program they compiled and installed from source. Some times -very few- the program's author adds an uninstall rule to their Makefile, but that's not usually the case. This is my primary reason to write CheckInstall. After you ./configure; make your program, CheckInstall will run make install (or whatever you tell it to run) and keep track of every file modified by this installation, using the excelent installwatch utility written by Pancrazio 'Ezio' de Mauro (p@demauro.net).
When make install is done, CheckInstall will create a Slackware, RPM or Debian compatible package and install it with Slackware's installpkg, "rpm -i" or Debian's "dpkg -i" as appropriate, so you can view it's contents with pkgtool ("rpm -ql" for RPM users or "dpkg -l" for Debian) or remove it with removepkg ("rpm -e"|"dpkg -r"). Aditionally, this script will leave you a copy of the installed package in the source directory so you can install it wherever you want, which is my second motivation: I don't have to compile the same software again and again every time I need to install it on another box :-)." - secrity, on 10/07/2008, -1/+20You get hints like "empty the recycle bin" in articles about Windows.
- uways, on 10/07/2008, -0/+19I wish there was an easier way to keep track of everything compiled from source
- ha3er0, on 06/16/2009, -0/+19You are an idiot. Digg started as a tech site you noob whore...
- johngarcia, on 10/07/2008, -2/+19Yes... because we ALL know that the Windows registry stays clean and doesn't need any maintenance.
- HonestAbe, on 10/07/2008, -0/+13Uninstalling old kernels and deleting everything in ~/.thumbnails is a good start.
Also http://www.methylblue.com/filelight/ - courtjester555, on 10/07/2008, -1/+12Doesn't even make sense.
- YodaJones, on 10/07/2008, -1/+11Cool. Cleaned up some space for me.
- dougle, on 10/07/2008, -0/+8Yeah get used to it or f*£k off
- ethana2, on 10/07/2008, -1/+8We're just here to evict the apple fanboys, that's all.

..in other news, my mom is ordering her Inspiron 1525n tomorrow, I'm excited :) - dse78759, on 10/07/2008, -2/+8Delete porn? Never!!!!!
- eddie72, on 10/07/2008, -0/+5I wouldn't go that far. I love Ubuntu and I still have a Windows machine for games. Every OS has it's use.
- drikle, on 10/07/2008, -2/+7Nothing happened, just more users...
- ethana2, on 10/07/2008, -2/+7Dude, if you're going to make a joke, you need to make it clearer that that's what you're doing; else, people will think you're just a complete idiot trying to be serious and bury your comment.
- bowens44, on 10/07/2008, -1/+6the point of the article was to REMOVE junk, not add it
- HonestAbe, on 10/07/2008, -0/+4Actually, it looks like the thumbnail bloat problem has been fixed:
https://launchpad.net/nautilus/+bug/37643
Yay! - infiniphunk, on 10/07/2008, -1/+5Yeah, and most people are ***** that don't care to let their brain function for anything beyond TeenIdol or WoW. The whole world is going to ***** right now because of the complacency and apathy of individuals. People who want to build their own car from scratch are freaking awesome.
- absurdist, on 10/07/2008, -0/+3Way #9: Install Vista. Hurl computer out of fifth floor window.
There, fixed that for you. - tj111, on 10/07/2008, -1/+4Great article. I've been living off the same Ubuntu install for almost 2 years now, I'm sure there's lots of bloat I can clean off this way.
I know I could do a fresh install, but everything is configured how I want it, and I don't have time anymore to go through and reconfigure everything. update-manager works well enough for me (just upgraded to 8.10 last night). - jamesatdigg, on 10/07/2008, -2/+5here is nice article about cleanup your ubuntu system http://www.ubuntugeek.com/cleaning-up-all-unnecess ...
- mynameistux, on 10/07/2008, -1/+3use the right tool for the job!
Mac for graphics
Unix for servers
Palm for mobility
windows for solitaire.
(I guess linux is all thats left, unless you count bsd, beos, and what not, and the only other space is desktop. HEY EVERYONE, ITS THE YEAR OF THE LINUX DESKTOP, AGAIN)
I love doing this every year.
(whose side am I on? after this comments, I'm just not sure.) - HonestAbe, on 10/07/2008, -1/+3Be nice.
- inactive, on 10/08/2008, -1/+3OK - cool and inspiring. But when I got to GTKORPHAN and started deleting chunks of 30 orphans , I got a bit scared when I saw GTHUMB (old fav of mine) and JAVA (!? WTF).
Too late - it was running : re-installed GTHUMB and JAVA (the good version) is still there.
I am not a LINUX guru (not yet) but I know a lot about IBM MVS/Z-OS. Can anyone explain why GTKORPHAN picks GTHUMB if it has no dependency on GTK. And if it has any, why select it as orphan. I will find out a reason some time in the future, but if you have the answer ready, I will welcome it. Great stuff anyhow : I spent 30+ years doing IBM project with step1 = clean up the dead wood. And I stuck to this on all my PC OS2, Linux and Mac. - HonestAbe, on 10/08/2008, -0/+2It doesn't clean them up automatically, so you can get a huge chunk of your hard drive devoted to thumbnails for files that don't even exist anymore. I purge it every once in a while. Apparently this has been fixed now, though, so do it until the upgrade and then you don't have to worry about it in the future.
- inactive, on 10/07/2008, -2/+3My first step takes place in the initial install. I install the barebones. Than install gdm, xorg, gnome-core, network-manager-gnome, firefox, gnome-system-tools, and alacarte. If you don't do it this way, you end up with more bloat than a Windows system.
- Krissam, on 10/07/2008, -7/+8How?
That's less work than you need to do to install your drivers on windows. - ethana2, on 10/07/2008, -1/+2I mock your idiocy from my Dell Inspiron 1420n.
- weizbox, on 10/08/2008, -1/+2...but then you wont have thumbnails already generated...?
- cjnkns, on 10/14/2008, -0/+1This may have already been said here....but isn't this like Windows degrag?
- inactive, on 10/08/2008, -0/+1save your .gperf and gperf2 dir in your home. they should contain all or partically all your preferences.
Besides, if - next time - you install /home on a separate partition, you can at any time reinstall the OS and still keep all your settings. Linux is really good about keeping all cfgs and settings under /home/userid
As long as you don't switch window manager, i.e. from Gnome to KDE or vice versa, you can install another Linux disto over your root file system and maintain the same /home and you won't loose anything. Not an Email, no setting, no high score! - 0tis, on 10/21/2008, -0/+1It's called a trash bin in Ubuntu.
- cheeseplease, on 10/08/2008, -1/+1I'm gonna try Arch as soon as I get some time on my hands.
- seandfeeney, on 10/07/2008, -2/+2Knew most of this stuff but the list isn't all that noob... Dugg fror awareness!.
- ethana2, on 10/07/2008, -2/+2I have a 120 GB hard drive in my Ubuntu dell, BXRWXR.
I'm probably not going to actually do very much of this guide. I simply don't have to.
..and when I /should/ do something like this, apt will tell me when and how. - derkles, on 10/08/2008, -4/+4Step One: format Ubuntu Partition
Step Two : install ArchLinux
Step Three: ????
Step Four: PROFIT!
Seriously, Ubuntu is a well meaning distro w/ some excellent repos and community support.
They don't call it userland for nothing. . .
http://archlinux.org - Matey3, on 01/20/2009, -0/+0Hey guys I am not running GUI. this is our web server and I noticed it was running out of space, but only in one partition, I dont know how to move files between partitions. any idea?
- theaceoffire, on 10/07/2008, -3/+3*ever.
And you should scan your registry for broken links, missing files, etc. It increases stability and decreases wait times as it checks for things it can't find.
Best window's program I think for this is RegscrubXP: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=2048 - v1ctor, on 10/10/2008, -2/+1I am so tired of hearing about Ubuntu. People treat it like Ubuntu==Linux when there's so many more flavors. Want a clean, lean *nix machine? Run something striped down with a lightweight windows manager. Like, say, slackware with fluxbox.
- RaulMuadDib, on 10/07/2008, -3/+2Nobody said to do this.
- mynameistux, on 10/07/2008, -2/+1dugg for UT (err, yeah)
- HonestAbe, on 10/07/2008, -6/+4Who told you that? Ubuntu has plenty of flaws. Just less than all the other Linux distros.
- peterseb80, on 10/07/2008, -5/+2This isn't really a problem. After all, I have no games or multimedia files taking up any room on "my Ubuntu." Now digg me down!
- aircool, on 10/08/2008, -4/+11. Install windows.
- MrViklund, on 10/08/2008, -5/+2Not install the crap.
- azubi, on 10/08/2008, -5/+1Is there a minimum requirement for Ubuntu threads at digg?
- caseycoold, on 10/07/2008, -5/+1I haven't needed to go through my registry...every. I have had machines for years without it. wtf are you doing to your computers?
- kiwiboyus, on 10/07/2008, -5/+1Nice!
- pitdog, on 10/07/2008, -6/+1Nothing about "mean"?
