- rheobase, on 03/31/2009, -2/+34No Linux Mint? It's based on Ubuntu, but seems to be a bit easier to install and is more directed to the average home user in terms of look and feel. Extra bonus: it can use the Ubuntu repositories.
http://www.linuxmint.com/ - BigManOnCampus, on 03/31/2009, -4/+35No Arch? for shame!
- cosmicr, on 03/31/2009, -5/+34Linux XP, what a disgrace.
- XFi6, on 03/31/2009, -2/+24I don't see Fedora anywhere on the list
- lemur, on 03/31/2009, -2/+20No Fedora? Buried.
- antoniuk, on 03/31/2009, -0/+17Why would the article's writer not include links to the distro's site? It's great they included DSL but not giving lip service to the url is just poor journalism to me.
- removesstains, on 03/31/2009, -2/+19I always refer new people to use Mint over Ubuntu. That way i don't have to answer why youtube isn't working.
- sigmaman2, on 03/31/2009, -2/+17No OpenSuSE either. And the author had the nerve to include Linux XP Desktop; a shareware distro!
- uzair21, on 03/31/2009, -4/+17Didn't know about Crunchbang yet. Glad I do now.
- Archon810, on 03/31/2009, -0/+11Is Linux XP an April Fool's joke?
The http://www.linux-xp.com/get buttons don't work.
Support links on http://www.linux-xp.com/support don't go anywhere either.
Umm... - Wargasmic, on 03/31/2009, -0/+10Linux Mint is probably one of the best out there for "out of the box" support.
- dcast, on 03/31/2009, -2/+11Buried. No Arch, No Fedora, No Debian, No openSuSE. Sabayon is bloatware, Linux XP? Really?! Further they don't include Debian because "Ubuntu is a better debian" (I beg to differ) although they include #! which is just a derivative of Ubuntu.
- ethana2, on 03/31/2009, -0/+9Preinstalls aside of course. People don't understand how much better other OSes are ootb until they've installed Windows themselves.
- Tenoq, on 03/31/2009, -2/+11I'd say it's infinitely more likely than having them work out-of-the-box in Windows.
- inactive, on 04/01/2009, -0/+8True, but how much time has Gates inc. cost all of us?
- srg13, on 04/01/2009, -1/+9I fail to see how Fedora, Debian and OpenSUSE are obscure...
- dalittle, on 03/31/2009, -1/+9You realize the upcoming windows 7 release has 8 flavors right? And they are not nearly as useful as all the different ones you can get regarding linux, they are artificially limited so microsofts marketing people can feel useful.
What was that? Did you head just explode? - Humppatarzan, on 03/31/2009, -1/+8My thoughts exactly! They always "forget" Arch, which is probably because they despise the simplicity of the configuration we have, among other things. I'm writing this on my 32-bit 2009.2 with KDE 4.2 and this is working really well, as always. So many problems with Ubuntu... Especially these days, as the xine init problem is around.
Let's face it. Arch is too unique for those guys, who write articles for the public. They probably have problems thinking outside the box, as Arch is not based on any mainstream system. - inactive, on 03/31/2009, -2/+9God, Allah, or Flying Spaghetti Monster forbid that you be interested enough to try something else that might actually work better, faster, and have the options that you really need on your PC. I was about to dump my old (7 year) dell laptop when I decided to go to Linux. Works so good that when I bought a new laptop 3 months ago, first thing I did was replace Vista with the latest Ubuntu. You don't have to "sift through dozens of distros to find one that works for them", and even if you did, what did it cost you? Nothing but a little time.
- inactive, on 03/31/2009, -7/+14No {insert obscure linux distro name here}???
- Megatog615, on 03/31/2009, -1/+8Have fun tomorrow!
Also Slackware rocks. - homemadejam, on 03/31/2009, -1/+8I have been meaning to try out CrunchBag for a while now.. I have heard many good things about it
- Megatog615, on 03/31/2009, -5/+11No Debian?
- Midnitte, on 03/31/2009, -2/+8It should, wireless drivers haven't been a problem for awhile now.
- Chris7mas, on 03/31/2009, -1/+7Dugg for Ubuntu, Knoppix and Damn Small Linux. Still there are missing some of the 'fathers' like Debian, Slackware or even Fedore and OpenSUSE.
- srg13, on 04/01/2009, -1/+7Of course not. Do you think cars would be better if there was only one model?
- jemka, on 03/31/2009, -1/+7I can't believe they didn't list all of the distros on distrowatch!!!! Travisty!!!
- ethana2, on 03/31/2009, -0/+6..Ubuntu is the only reason I bought a Dell in the first place.
--Although their offerings are so out of date and their support sucks so hard that I may just buy some Windows machine and throw the Windows discs on craigslist for whoever thinks its worth the drive to my house next time instead of letting my OS choice restrict my hardware choice. - Wargasmic, on 03/31/2009, -0/+6It should, a lot have been added lately.
- cubicledrone, on 03/31/2009, -1/+7I see you're new to Linux.
- lemur, on 03/31/2009, -0/+6That is kind of crummy...
- qiemem, on 03/31/2009, -0/+6Um, it's Crunchbang. Not Crunchbag.
- pendrachken, on 04/01/2009, -0/+6Not to mention, where is the source? maybe it is in the ISO file but most likely not. I smell a bit of trouble brewing between them and the FSF.... It should be interesting to see if anything changes, or they get sued.
- Wargasmic, on 03/31/2009, -0/+6Linux Mint is better for beginners than normal ubuntu. It just seems to work with less configuration. It's a fantastic distro if you like hassle free operation. And as you said, ubuntu distros can be used so you have all the software and support you need.
- BigManOnCampus, on 04/01/2009, -0/+6Yeah...
Want to update your arch install?
$ sudo pacman -Syu
is that so hard? Was it really that much harder than clicking an update icon?
The beauty is that Arch's simplicity means problems with updates are generally fewer. - mike215, on 03/31/2009, -1/+6i hear ya, arch ftw in my book. Arch seems to carry the Slackware myth, that its all console and have to be a guru to use it, it's actually pretty damn simple
- Heywoodj, on 03/31/2009, -0/+5Mint is a glaring omission. I've had more luck getting people to stick with that one then with anything else. PC Linux is a close second.
And what is that shareware abomination at the bottom of the page? - srg13, on 04/01/2009, -0/+5Mine has worked out of the box since the 2.6.26 kernel or there abouts (what, a year and a half ago?) but many more cards should have gained support (or improved) since then. I'd give a LiveCD a spin and find out.
- evaldasalex, on 03/31/2009, -4/+9No Fedora?
- sigmaman2, on 03/31/2009, -0/+5Not sure where on the site, but I'm sure you'll find it here...
http://www.gnome-look.org - lessgravity, on 03/31/2009, -0/+5Crunchbang is wonderful. I put it on a 4 year old laptop and the laptop is cool again. Fast lightweight with all the perks of Ubuntu. I love it.
- dalittle, on 04/01/2009, -0/+4I think you are missing the point of why this actually is one of linux's strengths. You can get a linux distro that fits on a usb drive, that can boot from the xbox dvd, that is completely bulletproof secure, etc. You can even start your own from scratch and experiment. (and your name is peestandingup so you have to expect a couple of smart ass comments)
- ukblacknight, on 03/31/2009, -0/+4Hmm i thought that theme in the pic looked pretty horrible IMO.
Have a gander at Shiki colours: http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Shiki-C ... - cubicledrone, on 03/31/2009, -0/+4Agreed. If you know what you're doing, and you prefer a shell over a GUI and you know how to install from source, then Slackware can't be beat.
- ethana2, on 03/31/2009, -0/+4I like my mac, but I LOVE my ubuntu dell.
Gotta have my comprehensive package management and hardware support.
..You don't even have categorized apps. - MicrosoftBob, on 04/01/2009, -0/+4Or you could just install Mint.
- stann65, on 03/31/2009, -3/+7So will my wireless network card(s) work right out of the box now?
- Warom, on 03/31/2009, -0/+4I have used it and to be honest I didn't get much of an improvement over Ubuntu, I suggest using just Debian with Openbox installed - you will get a boost in performance far greater than you will with CrunchBang.
- broscup, on 04/01/2009, -0/+3I loved Linux Mint until I loaded it on a client's computer and he called me back a little while later and said that it wouldn't run his Facebook poker. I know, I know, but I put it on his computer because he was always getting spyware, and I was sick of going to his house. Anyway, long story long, it got me testing some different distros, and I really liked Kubuntu. very quick and his Facebook poker played great. It will now be my new go to for a Linux distro.
- ercax, on 04/01/2009, -0/+3It's better than Windows; Home depot sells those.
