Plus autumn is my favorite season..................anyone know where I can get that desktop pic?- DarkEnder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15The video is just for context, the main reason this is on Digg is for the high-rez PNGs.

- sishgupta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5One of the interesting things about beryl skydomes is that they don't have to be high res.
I currently use the one in this thread:
http://forum.beryl-project.org/viewtopic.php?f=55&t=2293 - alevel27mage, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13These may be high-resolution, but they are far from high-quality... enlarging an image and then applying a brush filter in photoshop to get rid of the artifacting/pixelation doesn't count.

- strabes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Be happy you don't have ATI. They're "skydomes" btw.
- jcapogna, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Skydomes work fine on my integrated intel chip.
- darkspire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@strabes: A skydome and a skybox are very similar in terms of rendering 3d scenes.
Skydome - A curved dome, which is then textured. Used to create the illusion of skies and such.
Skybox - A set of 6 images that form a cube, which is rendered behind everything else, so the viewer is always "in" the cube. This is useful for creating the illusion of skies and such.
Skyplane - A flat plane, which is then textured. Used to create the illusion of skies and such.
The primary difference is how the texture is applied, if you were able to rotate your perspective (the camera) in the 3d space and not just the desktop cube (scene node) the choice of a skybox might actually have better results than a skydome though some will argue that a skybox is harder to generate good textures for due to the way they are stitched together at the edges. - thejart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@stonedgeek

- natenovs, on 10/12/2007, -13/+3ok. this kind of looks a lot like vista...
just better.- xlocust, on 10/12/2007, -15/+4Now I am not a fanboy of any OS but IMHO, Beryl looks like *****. The animations (ie' fire and moving stuff in the background) are clunky, over the top, distracting, and add little to functionality.
Vista's effects, on the other hand, are smooth and unobtrusive. While the effects don't really add any new functionality, at least the UI is pretty decent improvement over XP's fisher price UI. Vista is also quite stable with Aero enabled (if you have a computer has the specs to handle it) unlike x with Beryl.
Just my opinion. - rbanffy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8It looks live what Vista 3.0 will be, in early 2021 ;-)
Seriously, guys.. It's time to abandon the astroturf effort and go code a whole lot of stuff. This is putting Microsoft to shame - It took you 5 years for a rehash of an old, tired OS with added layer of uglyness? Were not for Aero, the XP to Vista upgrade could easily ship on a floppy ;-) - Hattrick, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Look, Vista added some graphic hooha to their interface and all of a sudden they are inventive. Bah! XGL/Compiz/Beryl are a serious take on the whole 3D desktop thing. It is easy to compare some of the ideas to MacOS UI but Beryl takes it so much farther. This is the envelope being pushed, not a veiled attempt at adding "coolness" to the OS. This will get your system noticed and make you the envy of fellow geeks.
And, wait for it . . . you don't have to give Apple or Microsoft your money to use it. - natenovs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i agree beryl is better. i think i said that, and got dugg down, jeez.
but if you cant see that whole thing looked a lot like vista than you are blind.

- franksands, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Just an honest question: what is a skydome?
- jcapogna, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Beryl/XGL has the cube thing, right?
The skydome is a sphere surrounding that cube that you can lay an image onto. You can make it look like your cube is floating in the sky or whatever image your want. I prefer just have my cube floating in nothing. - franksands, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think I've been out of the linux world for too long, what cube thing??
- drizek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Its the sphere that your 3d desktop is in. If you use windows, you dont have a 3d desktop.

- jcapogna, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Beryl/XGL has the cube thing, right?
- crocodilexp, on 10/12/2007, -15/+2Technically very impressive, but from a usability standpoint, as useful as a knob on a soccer ball...
All is very much in the spirit of Linux -- give the user 30 ways to do a single, simple operation (e.g. switch between apps), which in the process becomes a complex operation.
Almost nobody with real work to do wants to spend endless hours customizing their desktop -- all that people ever *really* want to customize is their own workflow (and this is rare as well). Take a look at Office 2007, Microsoft finally got it right (*one* customizable toolbar, everything else in it's expected place). In terms of usability, open source seems doomed to following the big bad corporations.- jcapogna, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Actually, the whole cube thing provides a much more fluid method for switching between apps than anything I have ever used.
- badave, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7You're just jealous that Vista doesn't have this stuff yet. I know I am. So very, very jealous. I have Vista, and it's okay, but it really is little better than a step up from XP. Vista is a lot faster and far more efficient than XP, and it has that tabby thing which doesn't really get used, and it shows all windows in real time now, and it's more aesthetic than XP, but that's pretty much it.
I wanna try beryl because it looks so cool and not many people have it. I've been trying to get Ubuntu to install enough so I can try beryl, but alas, I haven't yet. Soon, I think... - xdoute, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7you are completely wrong, sorry. i am a software developer and work in an office with 4 other software developers and 5 non-devs and everyone customizes their stuff at least a little. i spend most of my day writing code and i still find the time to hack together a working e17 install. the other devs are switching between flux, gnome, twm, and kde all the time to play with desktop stuff.
also, vista just added a bunch of window switching stuff and transparency stuff as well, so aparently along with apple, and beryl people (and metisse, and looking glass, and y desktop), microsoft also thinks that eye candy adds value to interfaces.
there is a lot to be said for aesthetics and the difference it can make in a million ways. its like asking you if you would rather catch a pointy spikey 10 pound cannon ball, or a nice smooth round one. you hands would like you more if you chose the round one. your eyes will like you more if you choose a fluid desktop. /2cents - signal15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Everyone has their own way of working. Maybe you won't use this stuff, but some people will. I feel like someone chopped off my hands if I don't have multiple virtual desktops, and the whole grab the corner of an app and bend it down to see what's under it useful too. It doesn't hurt that it all looks cool too.
- rbanffy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That was the obligatory Windows Astroturf Post. This reminds me we are on Digg.
And you are dead wrong. Back in Windows 3 I had a custom SVGA.DRV with my own widgets. Since then, I spend less and less time fiddling with the interface. When I install a Linux box for me, I spend about 2 minutes do select a theme I like (I don't like the orangeness of Ubuntu).
And the direct manipulation/kinetic interface you see in those videos is _much_ more natural to work with. Once you use it a couple hours, you will have to be dragged screaming and kicking back to your 20-year-old flat windows desktop.
MS will have a whole load of stuff to introduce, just not to be embarrassed when each and every major Linux distro introduces full 3D desktops and the Windows crowd is left in the dust.
What will they do? Threaten ATI, Nvidia and Intel that unless they start sabotaging the Linux driver writing effort the drivers for their chipsets will fail to work in the next Windows release? It could have worked before, now they will be left screaming alone.
And Ballmer will throw a chair.
- abxy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Beryl seems like would be perfect for a gamer-centric OS/distro. To log into my OS with leaves and ***** falling in the background as I browse my games would be nice. It's just a shame that Linux itself isn't really looked upon or treated like a platform for serious PC gaming. -- Would things like this even be possible in Vista with it's new desktop composition effects? Because if it's possible, someone needs to get cracking and make the "Games For Windows" platform a *true* reality.
On a side note, are there any gamer-centric Linux distros?- abxy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1UPDATE:
Ok, so I was just looking at how Windows Vista's Desktop Window Manager (DWM) works and the good news is that based on how it's built and the API's given to the end user, stuff like this actually achievable in Vista. -- And more than that, for those not using Vista like myself, I suppose there could be a desktop overlay program that takes advantage of DX9c and mimics the way Vista's DWM works, effectively giving you visual fx like these in Windows XP (including Aero's glass and image thumbnails on the taskbar). And while that's easily said, the only question about it is: Who would willingly sacrifice their time working on such a thing for XP and Vista?
- abxy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1UPDATE:
- kettlechips, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1Big deal windows vista can already do all this!
- xdoute, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1correction, windows vista can do SOME of this, not most.
- nadadingsda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I really like beryl, it looks awesome on my 24" screen.. the only thing I hate is that there is some lag when I'm typing, it is really annoying when coding or working on the console.
- lowerlogic, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Beryl is really cool, but why does it have to be a cube or some other geometric shape?
Here's an idea:
Instead of having a cube, you have a control interface much more like a typical FPS game - Instead of spining around a cube to get to other virtual desktops, you walk around a virtual room or some environment (using normal FPS controls) with a desk and monitors. You'd be able to move the virtual monitors around the 3D environment, and make more important virtual screens larger(i.e. have 1 large monitor in the virtual room show the movie you're watching, and have another, smaller screen show chat or whatever. Also, if you wanted to, you could easily walk backward a few feet and see multiple virtual screens at once and drag stuff between screens. In this virtual room, wallpaper would have a whole new meaning (or rather, fit the real-world meaning better). The input/interaction could be like how Doom3 did it - moving the mouse turns/pitches the camera like all FPS and a little mouse shows up on whatever virtual screen you are looking at in the middle of your real screen. And if you havent touched a virtual monitor for a while you could have it start a screen saver on that screen. Looking out a window of the virtual room whould let you see your screen saver or a skydome or something. - DeFex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I am thinking of switching or at least dual booting. how does it work with dual monitors?
- mtxe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3search youtube and you will see (check out more than one video ... you can do it more than one way to view 2 monitors)
- TheTankengine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've recently installed beryl on my dual monitor setup and it works very well actually. I am using Twinview and it generally doesn't have many problems with a typical setup. Only a couple minor things I can think of, like scale will sometimes put a window right in the middle of the monitors.
If you have an nVidia card like I do then you should have no problems setting it up. Just use the 'nVidia X Server Settings' control panel and you never have to touch your xorg.conf. I don't have any experience with intel or ati, though.
You could also set them up as two separate X screens. - darkspire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Dual monitors works on single card dual monitor setups. IE Nvidia card with Twin View set up. Additionally Beryl requires RandR which isn't compatible with xinerama so while Beryl can work with xinerama the additional requirment of RandR broke xinerama support. So, there are core developers aware of the issue and working on it, but your best bet of working with dual monitors at this point is via Twin View. Those of us with three monitor dual card set ups are currently sol.
- tropican8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Did anyone notice he's not using a skydome (as far as I can tell) in the video?
- psyaeger, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3The Beryl demonstration video embedded on the page is one that I chose from many such videos found at YouTube. I didn't create it. Someone with the username BastionPL did. :) My site was momentarily slow but it looks like my hosting server allotted more cache space to my site as it seems to be loading normally now... not really sure how that works. This is my first experience with the Digg effect. :)
- tehpoutine, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Next time link directly to the content dick. Marked as spam.
- psyaeger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The skydome images are the content... the Beryl demonstration video is just context... thanks for paying attention... NOT! LOL
- OropheR, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Some says that vista is better than xp, it ought to be , considering the hardware needed (ie: ram) to work.
But this! Beryl is the new desktop to have: Vista is out! I am not so much into the 3d cube thing, but the rotating menu and other stuff...this is nearly sci fi ! Great stuff !
As soon as the new release of ubuntu is there, I upgrade with Beryl. - SSCrow, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Its cool that People are coming up with this kind of stuff.
But to me, Its not practical. I would rather have better performance than some particles on my desktop with some physics attached windows.
But Hey, thats just the way I look at this. - joper90, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1what filemanager is being used in that video?
and how do you get the leaves effect?- archiesteel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I believe it's the "Snow" plugin, with "leaves" textures instead of snowflakes (you can load any PNG you like, though honestly it's better if they are small and fuzzy, as there's not anti-aliasing for the actual "flakes"). Also, the direction has been changed from top-to-bottom to right-to-left.
- tuzziel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It seams that Rebel fleet just finished their own "Death Star".
- ChumpChief, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They got Death Star?
- tuzziel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2As you can see, they are test firing that new Beryl laser of theirs, heavy casualties reported in the Imperial flanks.
- mobilehavoc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Used Beryl for like 6+ months (since back when it was Compiz-Quinn) and this stuff gets old REALLY fast. After a few weeks I turned off most effects and crap. Just a heads up...
- archiesteel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That's okay, you just keep what you find useful. I know I can't do without "Scale" now, and the shadows+window animations are always nice. I also use the "show desktop" functionality linked to a screen corner. I'm torn between using the Cube and the Desktop Wall, though.
I still put on the Snow desktop when I feel like meditating a bit. Very soothing.

- chadlewis76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My thumbnail window previews, on two different machines, don't look anywhere near as detailed as those in the video. Any idea how to get that kind of resolution?
- Dolphtesla, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Wow, my linux desktop is using Mac OSX features that have BEEN OUT FOR YEARS. The rest is eyecandy. LAME.
