- tian2992, on 08/03/2008, -5/+23KDE fan here, i would wish more Gnome apps would be as powerful as Gparted
- Zyphon, on 08/03/2008, -0/+15GParted is an integral tool of my favorite live cd, SystemRescueCD, which uses custom distro of Gentoo.
Seriously, SRCD is awesome, so check it out.
http://www.sysresccd.org/ - ironeus, on 08/03/2008, -0/+14The last line especially should not be overlooked -- always have a backup.
- BlatheringIdiot, on 08/03/2008, -0/+13I used it Tuesday to restore my sister's virginity. Took 3 passes, but it worked.
- MrDarkSim, on 08/03/2008, -1/+12GParted saved my ass after I accidentally made my Vista partition too small when I installed Ubuntu. Glad I had the program burnt to a disc.
- brainjuice, on 08/03/2008, -2/+13GParted donated a kidney to me once!
- tunapez, on 08/03/2008, -0/+10Great for creating a MyDoc's partition for easier imaging/restoring in Windows.
Even just reclaiming the useless OEM Recovery Partition.
Recovering data from a failed Windows installation is easier w/ a Linux Live CD, too.
Go figure. - MistaMatt90, on 08/03/2008, -0/+8#4 is the best on the list.
- mynameistux, on 08/03/2008, -0/+8#8 formatting school hdd. : )
- sysop073, on 08/04/2008, -0/+6I really don't know why they tried to make an entire article about gparted. It's for editing partitions. That's it. You can list individual reasons you might want to edit partitions, but that has nothing to do with gparted itself, that's just your motivation. You use it to edit partitions
- abhiroop, on 08/04/2008, -1/+7But at the same time it does make sense that if the product has hundreds of people working on it as a JOB rather than a hobby should work better.
- thanasiskap, on 08/04/2008, -0/+65. When your friend asks you to put things back how they were, tell him you've already formatted their Windows partition and persuade them to use Linux for ever. That is the power of GParted
- cbdgr, on 08/03/2008, -0/+5#8 reset the partition flags when you screw them up with something like ghost.
- BraveLilToasta, on 08/03/2008, -2/+7All I can say is...sham-WOW!!!
- sysop073, on 08/04/2008, -0/+5Tuesday night I took it back. It took 1 pass
- ajake, on 08/04/2008, -0/+4Basic ubuntu installation cd is also a bootable live-cd which has gparted and other tools. Sometimes it can even solve windows problems :) (latest stable ubuntu 8.04.1)
- abhiroop, on 08/04/2008, -0/+4Ditto. I use it for Gparted and Partimage, which is an amazing backup tool.
- freedomics, on 08/03/2008, -0/+4A great liveboot image is gparted-clonezilla. It can live-boot various incantations of gparted or Clonezilla, which is similar to Norton Ghost. I've used gparted for many tasks, but the most critical was shrinking a W2K NTFS partition and then expanding the "C:" partition on a critical server running MSSQL.
I use Clonezilla every time I purchase a new PC for our small business or whenever I need to make major changes to a system and want to make sure I can recover. I use Clonezilla to store and recover XP and Vista systems to/from USB external drives. It compresses the partition images so if there is a large partition of mostly empty space, the image on the external drive is still quite manageable.
Two great tools on one bootable disk. - m0deth, on 08/04/2008, -2/+5Why would adequately functioning code give a rat's ass about whether or not it's author got paid?
think about it - inactive, on 08/04/2008, -0/+3I just used this liveCD a couple days ago (had it originally for repartitioning) and restored my MBR which somehow got b0rked. So that is probably a use not thought of initially.
- ScotchInBox, on 08/03/2008, -0/+3I just used it yesterday to expand my vista vmware image on my mac. Works OK but I was having problems with the mouse clicking on items within Gparted - no clue what the problem is but eventually got through it Dugg for open source goodness.
- inactive, on 08/04/2008, -0/+3Wow, it's also useful for partitioning.
- hartley, on 08/03/2008, -0/+3GParted Live cds have saved me a number of times resizing partitions *especially boot partitions*.
My finicky nature has caused me to go from linux to windows every time I get a new video card. Windows hates it when you want to resize the boot partition. - jay019, on 08/04/2008, -0/+3Two of my friends died reading your stupid comment.
- TeatimeGrommit, on 08/03/2008, -0/+3GParted saved my butt when I needed to revive a broken Windows partition. I needed to move an existing non-functional Windows into a virtual machine and then make the VM boot that copy of Windows. All the messed up flags and so forth were fixable. I wish I'd known about it before I spent 3 days trying to do the same thing with other tools!
- pHreaksYcle, on 08/04/2008, -0/+3He's right...
- pHreaksYcle, on 08/04/2008, -0/+2Sometimes people need to be told what to do. As long as "The Internet" is there, my mom's just ducky.
- werries, on 08/04/2008, -0/+2Yeah sometimes they do need to be told what to do, but I honestly only take action when they're running IE6 on windows ME or something despicable of that nature.
Just saying, god damn man, exercise restrain and do your amateur tech support job for all your friends! :) - CameronCook, on 08/04/2008, -0/+2Just used it to clean up a dual boot laptop.
But I am still in love with Vista's Disk Manager, nothing beats shrink or enlarge options that don't really work. - MavRevMatt, on 08/04/2008, -0/+2Ha, I beat you! I was there Tuesday afternoon.
- m0deth, on 08/04/2008, -0/+2I dunno if anyone else has this problem but...Vince creeps me out....and I'm from the northeast. 'nuff said.
=] - Delta009, on 08/04/2008, -0/+2Don't forget to defrag your Windows partition multiple times before resizing so you don't corrupt the files that were at the very end of the partition (personal experience).
- lonniebiz, on 08/04/2008, -0/+1What's the difference form this and qtparted? :
http://www.howtoadvice.com/ResizePartition/ - werries, on 08/04/2008, -0/+1Wow, cause that totally helps the image of Linux.
Can we PLEASE not act like overzealous fanboys? Please? Just use your damn operating system and spread the word a bit, without forcing it. - antdude, on 08/04/2008, -0/+1PartitionMagic is old and hasn't been updated for ages. :(
- sysop073, on 08/04/2008, -0/+1Damn! I shouldn't have wasted time with the simulation first
- inactive, on 08/04/2008, -0/+1KDE4 apps you mean? Yet to have the Kate, Ktorrent KDE3 versions crash on me. They are the applications i use the most. In KDE 4.1 Ktorrent and the rest are going strong - only a few crashes in Krita so far.
Plus, Fugly? No. QtCurve my friend. - inactive, on 08/04/2008, -1/+2I've used Qtparted. What an ugly PoS! One of the few things i found no good equivalent for in KDE was GParted and it stands.
- zeusgodmann, on 08/04/2008, -0/+1"I don't know, it sells itself."
OMG that guy is annoying. - mrBitch, on 08/04/2008, -0/+1RE: SRCD - http://www.sysresccd.org/
This is a MUST even if all you want to do is recover data from a Windows drive. - enterneo, on 08/04/2008, -0/+1welcome to the FLOSS world!
- notwizt, on 08/04/2008, -0/+1I've heard Gparted is far from stable, and I had a pretty nasty encounter myself a while ago. I don't think I'll be using it again anytime soon...
- phibit, on 08/04/2008, -0/+1Gparted is awesome because whenever I needed bootable partition software, I used to fumble around trying to find a version of Partition Magic that could go on bootable media. Gparted is just there, and it's free (and it's not bloated with crap).
- mrBitch, on 08/04/2008, -0/+1RE: "Windows hates it when you want to resize the boot partition."
Also: have you noticed how Linux (installed last) plays nice with other installed OS boot partitions BUT Windows (installed last) is a jealous bitch of an OS? - Delta009, on 08/09/2008, -0/+1The defragmenter included in Windows is crappy. I takes several defrags to fully defragment a drive correctly.
- mrBitch, on 08/04/2008, -0/+1RE: "A great liveboot image is gparted-clonezilla. It can live-boot various incantations of gparted or Clonezilla, which is similar to Norton Ghost."
I never heard of clonezilla, it sounds damn handy - thank you! - mrBitch, on 08/04/2008, -0/+1I understand the need to defrag before resize - but multiple times? WTF?
