- terrorpin, on 01/11/2009, -1/+69"It's a common misconception that Linux doesn ’t have applications for day to day computing".
The sort of people who still think that wouldn't have a clue waht bittorrent is. - macaholic, on 01/11/2009, -3/+50Deluge has been the best in my experience, also the WebUI can be really handy.
- Yarkz, on 01/11/2009, -3/+22Using wine for a torrent client such as utorrent is not really worth it when you can also use deluge or ktorrent (my two favs)
- terrorpin, on 01/11/2009, -2/+21Good choice as a default, as it's simple enough for the uninitiated to use.
- Spr0k3t, on 01/11/2009, -3/+22rTorrent, Deluge, Transmission (in that order). I don't think I'll ever understand running uTorrent in wine when there are many other options available. It's like complaining there is no iTunes player for Linux on a Linux forum... pointless.
- kd420, on 01/11/2009, -1/+19Yup, after trying numerous clients I have to say that Deluge is the best. Full featured, but it runs way better than Vuze since it's not in java.
- gnimsh, on 01/11/2009, -0/+18For me, it lacks a whole lot. I always install deluge and remove transmission as I find it generally useless.
- Dongvid, on 01/11/2009, -3/+17Ktorrent user, it's like muTorrent but better in my opinion. Hell of an option, don't look anywhere else if you already have the KDE4 dependencies installed (which you may want in 18 days).
- virtualmode, on 01/11/2009, -0/+13And your dad is wrong. Ubuntu has Evolution email client installed by default. Evolution is something as powerful as Outlook.
Anyway, I also use gmail. And used it before switching to Ubuntu. Just because it's great. - Renton, on 01/11/2009, -0/+13Azureus didn't come out until 2003.
- Holosiren, on 01/11/2009, -5/+16Utorrent... *sigh*
I'm always shocked that so many choose a closed source client for the most secret and illegal thing they do on their computers. Jesus Christ, the MPAA could bribe/blackmail the developer into updating the client with a record/report function, and you would be none the wiser until a month later when they're sodomizing you in court. - audiored, on 01/11/2009, -2/+12Ubuntu switched to transmission. What do people think of that?
- SmellyGeekBoy, on 01/11/2009, -1/+11I like it. I came from a Mac to Ubuntu and Transmission is what I used on that platform too. It seems pretty reliable and gets the job done - I know there are other clients out there with more features and more speed, but for day-to-day downloading it's a useful little app.
- svivian, on 01/11/2009, -0/+9I, like many people, would prefer Deluge. Now it's out of beta maybe they will add it in a later version.
- praisethelard, on 01/11/2009, -0/+9Your dad might need an exorcist.
- virtualmode, on 01/11/2009, -1/+10It does the job and it's easy to use. Exactly what default applications are for.
- HorseloverFat8, on 01/11/2009, -1/+9KTorrent FTW if you're using KDE, and if you want a more Gnome-friendly look, Deluge.
- SmellyGeekBoy, on 01/11/2009, -1/+9Vuze is terrible. It was pretty bad when it was just Azureus, but at least it worked in its own slow and clunky way... Now it's just bloated and crap.
- Krissam, on 01/11/2009, -2/+10I asked my dad if he wouldn't try ubuntu last time he had to reformat his pc... he siad
"Hvorfor skal jeg bruge det lort, jeg skal da nægte at bruge et operativ system der ikke har et email program, jeg gider ikke bruge webmail". Which means something along the lines "Why should i use that *****, i'll refuse using an OS which doesn't have an email application, i dont want to use webmail".
just because I've always used gmail with my ubuntu, but then again, he doesn't know what bittorrent is, but it really jsut shows how ignorent the avrage user is :/
@article, personally i run transmission, i dont do a whole lot of bittorrenting on my laptop (which is where i run linux, since i use my pc mainly for gaming). On my PC i run µtorrent - inactive, on 01/11/2009, -1/+9It sucks but it's better than the previous one. I think they should include deluge by default.
- Kabloink, on 01/11/2009, -0/+8Are applications now fashion statements that require you to use the current trendy ones to be one of the cool kids?
- niessuh, on 01/11/2009, -4/+11great share. I am so happy with linux. :)
- phrstbrn, on 01/11/2009, -0/+7Transmission is a great choice as a the default. It's simple enough that it passes the mother test (put it in front of my mom, and she can figure it out). I would wager the majority of BT clients don't pass this test. Deluge (and other clients) are great, but have too many buttons and would just confuse my mom. They just want to "download", they don't care how it works.
Power users will probably want to use something else anyway no matter what the default is (can't please everybody). - inactive, on 01/11/2009, -0/+6Which plugins?
- SmellyGeekBoy, on 01/11/2009, -0/+6Indeed, welcome to 5 years ago.
- himilco, on 01/11/2009, -2/+8I am using rtorrent and it rocks!
U dont need any gui, just let it download into a samba share and log in by ssh. Secure and Easy. - SnowCrashv5, on 01/12/2009, -0/+6I grow excessively tired of people thinking software through Wine is a great "linux" application.
- werries, on 01/11/2009, -1/+6trolling with a smile
- subgeniusd, on 01/11/2009, -1/+6What is so "fabulous" about Windows 7?
As if that sluggish corporation could actually come up with anything innovative in less then 5 years......if ever. - insanebrain, on 01/11/2009, -4/+9O boooh look at me. I'm a person who is stuck in the '90ties and I don't want to use a GUI, and now I'm going to tell everyone who uses a GUI that they are stupid.
Grow up will ya. . - adkenc, on 01/11/2009, -0/+5reporting for duty. my windows 7 dl just finished with ktorrent. it's the opensuse default and it seems to work fairly well.
and now? on to setup a new machine in virtualbox... - effinboy, on 01/11/2009, -3/+8I run uTorrent on wine on my torrent server currently (for the webui) before that I used Deluge... Loved it, and it's webui as well, but found that it was reporting incorrect stats to a few of the more picky-about-your-ratio sites, so I switched.
- h377r1d3r, on 01/11/2009, -0/+4"rtorrent rulz" agreed, but why would you wait for utorrent to be ported to linux ??? what advantages does it have over rtorrent ???
imho rtorrent is for linux what utorrent is for windows, i don't see anyone waiting for rtorrent to be win32 compatibile. - jamesmcm, on 01/11/2009, -0/+4Some people want a reliable, secure system to do serious work on. We're not all teenagers living with our parents playing games.
- myster9, on 01/11/2009, -0/+4another vote for ktorrent on linux; i run utorrent on win.
it's slick, it's fairly light on resources and has a good number of nice features: built-in ip filtering using blocklists, search plugin, upnp, etc.
that's it. ktorrent and amarok, the only two kde apps on my gnome desktop. - SniperZero, on 01/11/2009, -1/+5torrentflux or b4rt torrentflux depending if you want extra features.
- javaroast, on 01/11/2009, -0/+4Yeah it's the WebUI here as well. I messed around with the WebUI for deluge, transmission and rtorrent and all suffered from quirks that kept me going back to uTorrent. The best part is I get better performance with uTorrent in Linux than I do on XP.
- MorpheousMarty, on 01/11/2009, -1/+5So how do I get it to automatically download my favorite shows from an RSS feed?
- GarrettGrimsley, on 01/11/2009, -0/+4There is no Linux port of uTorrent planned.
- svivian, on 01/11/2009, -0/+4The 1.0 series is great. 0.9 was incredibly buggy. (Yes, it was beta, but 0.5 was way more stable.)
- Spr0k3t, on 01/11/2009, -0/+4So instead of being the better person, you'd rather join the rank of ***** like some of the other trolls? Yeah, notch one up to brilliance there for ya.
- SnowCrashv5, on 01/12/2009, -0/+4Yes
- SnowCrashv5, on 01/12/2009, -0/+3Exactly? Please do tell what feature utorrent has deluge or ktorrent doesn't. B/c there isn't any. The only people that hold on to utorrent tend to be Ubuntu noobs (or mandriva, or mint or whatever.)
- vandr1ver, on 01/11/2009, -1/+4I used to use Azures and have dabbled with k-torrent and deluge. Now I'm using an eee-pc with Ubuntu on it that came with Transmission and dose the job, so I'll probably stick with it.
- sathyabhat, on 01/11/2009, -1/+4that would be ?
- gremlinchief, on 01/11/2009, -0/+3Because python is slow as hell when running more than 30 torrents at once. BitTornado's raping of my system resources was what made me switch to rTorrent.
Coupled together with a wTorrent web interface, and you've got a great looking frontend as well. No ssh necessary so you can share it with your friends if you feel like it. - svivian, on 01/11/2009, -0/+3Who would use a desktop bittorrent client? Someone who doesn't want to learn a million commands to use their computer. Why are you people so averse to the ease-of-use of seeing what you're doing when using a computer?
- GraphiteCube, on 01/11/2009, -3/+6rTorrent rulz, good for headless server.
uTorrent on Wine? What!? I would like to wait for native build. - JohnnySoftware, on 01/11/2009, -1/+4BitTorrent gained a bad rep for a while because people were misusing it.
I think BitTorrent is used as the downloading protocol for WoW patches now, and the music industry association has licensed BitTorrent too. - coldwind777, on 01/12/2009, -0/+3Why not just make your choice of OS based completely on which one has the best BT client? Because that makes sense...
