- Soldierboi, on 11/02/2008, -2/+80Get ready for the multitude of "What, no mention of [insert obscure app here]? FAIL"
- ctrlfreak13, on 11/02/2008, -0/+44The video being showed in the screenshot of VLC, called "Big Buck Bunny", was itself was created with a free open-source program called Blender, which is used to create 3D animation.

http://www.blender.org/ - Torx, on 11/02/2008, -1/+40No seven page click through. That just made my day.
- sirhomer, on 11/02/2008, -19/+48What, no mention of [insert obscure app here]? FAIL
- J16T3CH, on 11/02/2008, -8/+33No Gimp? Thats a list breaker for me.
- notyourbroom, on 11/02/2008, -3/+24"Honestly, ones “geek-cred” would take serious dent if they aren’t using Firefox. Oh and I also feel mentally distressed when I see someone using IE. Ya I know I am a fanatic!"
"The possibilities are endless to pimp your Amarok ! I don’t really know if these capabilities are now available in other players, nor do I care, Amarok got me locked in!"
Author sounds like he's a 14-year-old. - RMoore08, on 11/02/2008, -2/+22Wheres XBMC?! Honestly...
- exspasticcomics, on 11/02/2008, -3/+18no need to insert obscure app names into the list... the list is PERFECT. (LOL>>)
don't get me wrong- I'm a linux user & it's cool to show your favorite open source apps a little love once in awhile I guess... (LOL..) in reality.. I'd rather read all the obscure apps digg users suggest should be on this list.. then read about real obvious apps like firefox or VLC.. i'd rather read about good apps that are out there that no one really knows about. -I'd rather learn something I didn't already know... - Aurabolt, on 11/02/2008, -9/+24What, no Pidgin? FAIL
- jadez03, on 11/02/2008, -8/+208. Drupal!
- AirRaven, on 11/02/2008, -0/+12I was going to say- Jesus Christ.
How on Earth's this managed to get more than 100 Diggs? Appalling quality of writing. - HonoredMule, on 11/02/2008, -0/+9Surely you can agree that GIMP's quality and acceptance amongst graphic editors is controversial, and the OSS community's pride in th GIMP is at best far from universal.
- satyarth, on 11/02/2008, -1/+10Oh yes, that is a very useful APPLICATION.
/s - Swivelstick, on 11/02/2008, -2/+11Apache, Wordpress and Jabber? Yes, something to brag about if you want blank stares 99% of the time..
- AirRaven, on 11/02/2008, -0/+8Seconded on the VLC front.
Also, the new buttons are *hideous*.
And the tray icon? Would somebody care to inform me why on Earth a generic media player needs a tray icon?
They've gone and done a Pidgin on the UI front, I fear. - AirRaven, on 11/02/2008, -1/+9Developers with egos the scale of a small planet do not a fun client make.
A GNOME app through and through.
"Voice/Video chat? You want the option to *see* the person you're chatting with? That'll just confuse the users!" - sirbeta, on 11/02/2008, -0/+8I love VLC but I've been having all sorts of stability issues with their new version on Windows. It crashes, won't save settings properly, seeking while playing DVDs appears to be completely messed up on half the DVD's I play (that worked correctly before), and in full screen, the control bar pops up constantly even if the mouse isn't moving. It's been so wishy washy lately that I had to migrate back to Zoom player for the time being. =(
- 0tis, on 11/02/2008, -2/+9See above
- int19h, on 11/02/2008, -1/+8Replace Amarok with Blender and I'm in :)
- mrboratsagdiev, on 11/02/2008, -0/+6And Boxee is based straight off from the latest updates of the XBMC core codebase with some enhancements here and there.
- RMoore08, on 11/02/2008, -0/+6I've been using it since it was made for the original Xbox, I think there are lots of people that have used it.
- itsontheway, on 11/02/2008, -2/+8As much as we all love open source and linux, these lists get kind of annoying after a while. We all know that firefox, vlc, and all the usual suspects will appear on these lists. In the last three months I have seen several submissions about the best open source apps, and the submissions always end up being the same apps, just repackaged in a different list.
- medopal, on 11/02/2008, -1/+7We "developers" always remember ourselves and forget others.
Why the hell aren't you mentioning Blender & GIMP ?? They are the best free open source software in graphics design. - jpinsonault, on 11/02/2008, -1/+6pidgen just isn't that great dude. Digsby is kicking it's ass, and even Meebo.com is nicer to use imho
- Junior612, on 11/02/2008, -5/+10Dial up in 2003?
Firefox advancing the wheel of internet development?
Poorly written and incomplete?
He lists seven and goes on to add five more at the end?
Typical "# List of FOSS Apps that are GR8!" article. - Vektuz, on 11/02/2008, -0/+5They forgot blender.
- chill1217, on 11/02/2008, -0/+5seriously?
- abbathdoom, on 11/02/2008, -0/+5I used the new VLC for 15 minutes and found it a "bag of hurt" that was annoying and broken, I quickly went back to the old version.
- LastDitchHero, on 11/02/2008, -0/+5Pidgin does not conform to the Gnome HID, but lucky for us no one cares to conform to it.
- AirRaven, on 11/02/2008, -2/+7Thank you for informing us. No idea how we coped before your invaluable input.
- JerichoCane, on 11/02/2008, -2/+7What a bunch of bull. If the developers are hacks it doesn't matter if it's open source or closed source. Open source is not a criterion for quality. Never has been, never will be. And those people who see it that way usually can't tell apart good code from bad code, even if it bites them in the ass. As a "method", if you even can call it that, open source is overrated much.
- jpinsonault, on 11/02/2008, -0/+5that'll teach you to have opinions!
- freedomics, on 11/02/2008, -0/+4If Apache is an "application", then so is MySQL, PostgreSQL, etc. Why not just pick LAMP instead of Apache. In fact, Wordpress is simply a web app that runs on top of the LAMP stack, of which Apache is just one piece. I love Apache and the rest of the LAMP components, but I don't consider any of them to be an "application" any more than Linux or Windows is an application.
- Dobby156, on 11/02/2008, -0/+4banshee!
- zeabu, on 11/02/2008, -0/+4What, no mention of [insert obscure app here]? FAIL
- eruanno, on 11/02/2008, -2/+6lol amarok sux.
- Vektuz, on 11/02/2008, -0/+4Except that open office isn't nearly as good as office, the gimp isn't nearly as good as photoshop.
- ElitistSnob, on 11/02/2008, -1/+5This dubious claim by OSS fanatics that Amarok is "w0r1d'Z best media player" is laughable. If anything it's an indictment of Open Source as a community of amateur developers who have little grasp of human interface design, and don't know how to develop a proper GUI. It's slow - ugly - and convoluted (vertical tabbed interface, need I say more)?
OSS certainly has produced some finely designed mass-market apps to be proud of, such as Firefox, but Amarok isn't one of them. Nor is Open Office, but that's another comment. - victorp, on 11/02/2008, -2/+6Amarok? really?...
- OropheR, on 11/02/2008, -1/+4Amarok: I am still waiting for a Windows XP version....
- chaos386, on 11/02/2008, -0/+3Which is weird, because the official Gnome chat client (Empathy) *does* support voice and video chat.
- lowtolerance, on 11/02/2008, -0/+3i've been using XBMC for years, and for a while almost every week they were coming out with releases that just blew me away. it was an awesome app even before it was legal to compile it, as before it branched out into the windows and linux platforms, you needed a copy of the XDK to build your own.
it's an amazing piece of software that still has years of growth ahead of it, and it definitely deserves a place on this list. Not to mention I usually have better luck getting it to play certain formats than I do with VLC - NerveBand, on 11/02/2008, -2/+5No. That is such a bloated piece of *****.
- Archon810, on 11/02/2008, -2/+5So, who else hasn't heard of the 7 apps listed? Did the author just go out, get the top most obvious app list and arbitrarily cut it at 7? In other news, the top 3 most awesome chemical elements are oxygen, hydrogen, and helium.
- sirbeta, on 11/02/2008, -0/+3It's about any version of VLC. They didn't say "7 apps every linux enthusiast should brag about" - As for the previous version; that would seem like the solution to go by. The problem was they didn't have binaries for the previous versions available and I couldn't build it at the moment. It became more work than it was worth. But I digress, it's still a good program.
- Swivelstick, on 11/02/2008, -0/+3Stand corrected :) it's in the linux section and made an assumption, should be an open source section?
- tonyscha, on 11/02/2008, -0/+2A list of 7 is too short....
- sloppychris, on 11/02/2008, -0/+2Linux version seems fine to me.
- jpinsonault, on 11/02/2008, -0/+2Somebody likes to rock the boat! =p
