- Endit, on 11/06/2008, -35/+57Or you could just get Windows...
I'm ready for the buries. - computershack, on 11/06/2008, -0/+21So to sum up the article...
Run it on WINE. If it doesn't run on WINE, install Windows and run it on that.
Way to go. - whiteknives, on 11/06/2008, -1/+22If Pro Tools ran in Wine, I would have no need for Windows at all.
- Abatrour, on 11/06/2008, -1/+15Is there a way to run linux programs in windows? I love rythmbox in Gnome
- paulsmith288, on 11/06/2008, -1/+15Sorry - the applications are not what you need. The functionality provided by them is.
The application is something that can be forced on you (e.g. iTunes / Media player) when all you want to do is listen to a sound file. - Barackalypse, on 11/06/2008, -2/+15Why would you switch if "you might not find the applications you needed"? If you are a single end user, your number one criteria for choosing an OS is "does it run the applications I need well"
- gamben0, on 11/06/2008, -5/+15Windows doesn't come with a high enough horse to sit on.
- Avian00, on 11/06/2008, -1/+10I think for many people it comes down to the plethora of apps that are either only available on Linux or are simply better on Linux. Therefore they would rather run Linux. The issue becomes what do you do with the stray app here and there that is Windows-only.
If I depend on 20 applications, and 18 of them are for Linux and only 2 for Windows, then it seems sensible to investigate options to run these 2 apps in Linux rather than the 18 other apps in Windows. - Orsenfelt, on 11/06/2008, -7/+16They are no worse than the Linux guy who thinks he's better than everyone else and comes out raging when someone disses his precious operating system.
Everyone knows Windows has issues, it's what happens when you support 90% of desktop machines in the world. Maybe someday when Linux climbs above 1% you'll find that out. - cheeseplease, on 11/06/2008, -5/+14Virtualizing Windows apps is not too much of a problem.. I do switch to Windows (XP) sometimes though as I like to use Ableton for music production and InDesign to create the magazine I publicize.
- computershack, on 11/06/2008, -3/+11"I am a dual-booter myself; Windows for games, Linux for everything else, and believe me, you don't know what you're missing."
I dualboot Vista and Intrepid. I do know what I'm missing. I'm missing banging my head against a wall trying to get windows network browsing working in Nautilus. I'm missing my hard drive being killed due to the load cycle bug. I'm missing NOT being able to use my networked printer connected to a windows box.
Linux is OK for the basics and a bit of tinkering, but not for productivity. - noisymime, on 11/06/2008, -2/+10Wine/Crossover is so close, but just not quite there. Its unfortunate that I have to retain a Windows license just to run things like Office in a VM.
- twiztidsinz, on 11/06/2008, -0/+8The article should have been called:
Wine, VirtualBox and 4 other programs like VirtualBox - ch40sBr1ng3r, on 11/06/2008, -0/+7Good stuff. More power to open-source!
- Murdats, on 11/06/2008, -0/+7yes, andlinux
now all you need is to run linux in windows in macos and you will be able to run everything, just with a ton of overhead. - LeeDoyle, on 11/06/2008, -7/+13I moved to Linux to get away from Windows....
- newwatch51, on 11/06/2008, -2/+8Yeah I've found that the easiest way to run Windows apps is with Windows.
- RaulMuadDib, on 11/06/2008, -0/+6@cdigioia
You moron, Office 2007 is closed source. Not only that, but we were talking about compiling linux programs in Linux. - inactive, on 11/06/2008, -1/+6Try Ardour, I converted.
- Finalreminder, on 11/06/2008, -3/+8Just dual boot.
Why would you want to run Windows on Linux?
If that's what you're after then format and load Windows instead. - amoeba, on 11/06/2008, -4/+9Why not use Open Office ?
- Knet88, on 11/06/2008, -4/+8Buried for "e-penis".
I've never liked that term, and most of the people I've seen using it have bigger ego issues then the people they criticize. - jejones, on 11/06/2008, -6/+10Unfortunately, all the alternatives save WINE require that one buy a copy of Windows to run Windows programs, and I want none of my money to go to the Evil Empire.
- noisymime, on 11/06/2008, -0/+4@amoeba
VBA macros and Office add-ins mostly. There's also incompatibilities with some of more complex formula functions (Even simple changes like the use of a . instead of a ! as a delimiter end up breaking things like the INDIRECT function) - Queue29, on 11/06/2008, -2/+6Poorer hardware support? You are mistaken. Linux supports more hardware than windows now.
http://digg.com/linux_unix/How_Linux_Supports_More ... - JohnFlux, on 11/06/2008, -1/+5> I dualboot Vista and Intrepid. I do know what I'm missing. I'm missing banging my head against a wall trying to get windows network browsing working in Nautilus.
Just wait until you try to get linux network browsing working in IE. Windows sucks at NFS. - kylepike, on 11/06/2008, -0/+4VirtualBox in seamless mode. Use it all the time for dream weaver, it actually runs very well. Setup shared folders, and its super easy to work in.
- sloppychris, on 11/06/2008, -2/+6How old are these screenshots?
- NJank, on 11/06/2008, -0/+4not always that easy. hence the need for MinGW and MSYS, or cygwin. Maybe if there was a coding 'best practices for cross compatibility' that didn't include the word Java, some of the little things that require these environments could be avoided.
- rchargel, on 11/06/2008, -1/+4Because sometimes I want to work on Photoshop or Flash while not leaving my current environment. I shouldn't have to reboot every time I want to modify a .psd file. Maybe I am writing software in my favorite OS, but I need to see how it runs in Windows without rebooting.
- wigren, on 11/07/2008, -0/+3@Finalreminder
Because after using Firefox, Open Office, GIMP and other tools on Windows, which didn't run so hot, I figured I should try them out in the environment they were made for. I ended up really liking GNOME and Ubuntu over all, so I stayed with it. - stam202, on 11/06/2008, -0/+3No KVM? The part of linux kernel.
- ahmedinejad, on 11/06/2008, -5/+8i just cant do without windows. thank you so much!!!
- chamberlanderic, on 11/06/2008, -0/+3so why switch if you have to go trough a virtual process, if everything is fine under windows ? I only install Ubuntu on old machine to make them run faster.
- JustinTX, on 11/06/2008, -2/+5Anyone who really believes in open source should donate the money they would spend on a Windows license and a license for whatever Windows software they simply must run to an open source project that is creating/maintaining an alternative.
- Shadoglare, on 11/07/2008, -0/+3I personally don't consider virtualization to be "running a windows app under Linux." You're still running it under Windows.
- mesarah, on 11/06/2008, -0/+3This is a great list, sometimes I need to run multiple virtual PCs on a single machine and this list will help me alot to find the better one.
- Slade605, on 11/06/2008, -0/+3Yes if we don't diversify our OS's one attack could doom us all, like the Irish potato famine, everyone was so reliant on potatos(windows) when the fungus/germ/whatever(virus/attack) it was that hit the potatoes, the population suffered greatly.
- MWeather, on 11/06/2008, -0/+2So did the author of the article, hence the virtualization products.
- AtomicCow, on 11/06/2008, -1/+3Uh, because it's kinda sucky. Sorry to say that but it's true.
- Queue29, on 11/06/2008, -0/+2Just use KDE.
- tEhKewleSt, on 11/06/2008, -0/+2Hilarious, well played sir.
- AtomicCow, on 11/06/2008, -0/+2Indeed. When all the Windows machines die on the same day, the *nix dudes will save us all.
- Fixion, on 11/06/2008, -0/+2Here's why I prefer not dual-booting:
I use a linux desktop (and have been for over a year). It has my mail and instant messaging programs (evolution, pidgin, skype), my work porgrams (eagle, matlab, python), and my office squite (openoffice, lyx). Not only does it have almost everything I need, I really prefer a gnome + compiz desktop over any windows desktop.
The only reasons I have to start windows are; some of my preferred programing IDEs aren't available in linux (e.g. AVR Studio), and the occasional game that doesn't run on linux (using wine) very well. When I just want to start a single windows program, rebooting is pointless. So I just start my windows partition in VMware instead of booting to it, and when (once in a blue moon) I want to play a game that doesn't run natively in linux, I reboot to windows. - rchargel, on 11/06/2008, -0/+2I don't disagree, however I would say that you could also donate some time to help develop/maintain that alternative. I am a developer on a number of open-source projects, but I don't have the money to donate. Maybe if I had the cash, I might just buy the software in the first place.
- Sabretou, on 11/06/2008, -0/+2PREISH!
- secrity, on 11/06/2008, -1/+3When trying to make *nix and Windows talk to each other, it is much easier to use CIF mounts rather then NFS. *nix speaks Windows much better than Windows speaks *nix
- diggtochina, on 11/06/2008, -1/+3***** that. I tried it. Im a Linux man but these audio apps are just to ***** crazy to set up if your gonna be doing any real tracking.
- thePTS, on 11/06/2008, -2/+4"Somehow" you fail to mention having actual access to a proper command-line interface, having config files in text-format rather than in the bloody registry (!), having access to the biggest freeware library in the world, with apps installed by a simple click/command, rather than going to ad-fueled sites. Having access to free, well-explained support info, like this:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=941864
I never said linux was perfect, why would I be dual-booting? But to go back to windows only, and try to find the tools I need by either downloading a subpar share/spy/adware-version, or by using pirated software versions of expensive programs like Photoshop? That is not an option.
tl;dr: you are stubborn, lazy and ignorant, hence your view on OSes, and hence you are buried. - inactive, on 11/07/2008, -0/+2"Although you can find any and all the replacements of a Windows application on Linux"
not really. Where is Crysis for example? -
