- troye, on 10/10/2007, -1/+26it only took 5 comments
- corevette, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15nice list, but here are more games: http://www.micahville.com/2007/07/27/debunking-linux-and-its-relationship-with-gaming/
- tech10171968, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Nice list, but I believe they've stopped any further development on XMMS in favor of XMMS2. I would've suggested that any XMMS fans switch to Audacious instead. I'm not a fan of XMMS2 or MPD (its counterpart) because the none of the frontends for either of these seem to be out of beta stage yet, and very few seem to be feature-complete (give it some more time and I'm sure that will change).
- lazyfisherman, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12God, I wish Adobe would port Photoshop CS3+ to Linux. A stripped-down, bare-bones, not getting in the way OS + Photoshop = heaven.
Good list. - tech10171968, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I had to Digg this comment up, because these are exactly the type of games which most people think either Linux isn't capable of doing, or they think don't exist on Linux at all.
- Nanobe, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4You obviously don't know what a repository is. If something's in the repository, that means that this is all you have to do to install it:
1. Click on the Applications button. ("Start button" in Windows terminology)
2. Click Add/Remove
3. Check the box of the program you want.
4. Click OK.
That's it. It's easier than on Windows. Quit the FUD. - MavRevMatt, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Way too long for Digg, what's with everyone today?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4at least it's not a Top 10 list :P
- Nanobe, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3No mention of Quod Libet? I just tried out Banshee, and it doesn't even compare.
- greyfade, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Right from the start, the list has glaring omissions:
Bittorrent: rtorrent. This client is absolutely the only client worth using. It's an ncurses app that uses very little memory and has some excellent default configuration and behavior. Its feature set is nearly complete (lacking only encryption), and it completely replaces Azureus for all uses. Period.
Eye candy: Half of those are buggy or useless, or, worse, pointless.
Graphics/text editors, and video/autdio editors: Missing essentials like Kino, Cinelerra, LiVES, Cinepaint, Krita, and many others i'm likely forgetting.
Network programs: Klibido and BNR2 are obviously missing from the list. They're the only good binary newsreaders.
IDEs: Vim and Emacs are missing. No one who programs should be without at least one of these two essential tools.
Other: Gnucash and Gnumeric are missing. WTF is up with this list? - Nerevar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2This list is gnome-centric, I wish they'd list more KDE apps. I'm surprised Krita isn't on here since it has CMYK support, which is probably the biggest thing that the GIMP is missing at this point.
- TheWiseNoob, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Thanks for the reply and suggestion. I will add some/most of them now!
- sacherjj, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2More intuitive isn't true for those who have done graphics work for years and years on Photoshop. We try key combinations without thinking and they don't work. If you have to switch back and forth between Windows and Linux, you don't want to have to learn another version of a graphics app. With a license to Photoshop CS2, I don't feel TOO bad about the USB key version of Portable Photoshop that I downloaded. That is what I run on Ubuntu when I need serious graphics work.
- AstralSin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3use synaptic if you're too scared of the command line, jesus christ. you people need to quit being so scared of the damn keyboard i mean jesus christ.
- sacherjj, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Or just get a console. Much easier for me than upgrading a PC every year. Cheaper too.
- hyperair, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I couldn't agree more with that.
- kaczus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2You, my friend, fail to realize that linux is NOT windows. First of all, it's made mostly by community. That means people create things they need and make them in a way they feel is best. Not in a way that will make the most cash for it's creator.
Second: in windows you also have to install "dependencies", but most of them are installed whether you need them or not. Those that are not managed by windows often are left behind when you uninstall the main application. Over time all those libraries pile up and use up precious system resources. In most linux distributions these are managed by system, but nothing stops you from installing them as separate packages that come with installers, flash and ati/nvidia drivers may be installed that way. - TheWiseNoob, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3That is because AWN, Compiz Fusion, and Screenlets are all still in beta. Almost everything else is in the repositories. Does Apple or Microsoft ever offer beta to everyone very often? No.
- RogueJediX, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Cool, apt-get apparently got a "serach" function when I wasn't looking.
- TheWiseNoob, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Thanks for telling me some things I needed. Even if it wasn't in the most polite way.
I added some of the apps you suggested. I hadn't put Programming IDEs on there until after the list was first made. I was, eventually, going to add Emacs. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Photoshop 7 will run under Wine. Is there a specific feature of CS3 you need?
- AstralSin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1komodo edit and quanta are probably my favorite tools for web development, save for vim. SciTE is nice too but just doesnt feel as complete as komodo and quanta
- prammy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1If you want a good frontend for MPD, check out Sonata.
- AstralSin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2apt-cache search searchstring
been there a long time - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Don't forgot NVU. It's not updated anymore. Amaya is a better choice and updated regularly.
- TheWiseNoob, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Thanks for your help!
I'm going to add Audacious and update XMMS to XMMS2. - greyfade, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1WYSIWYG web development tools are for ... tools. Get a real editor.
- dpjames, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1that list was going well for the first two categories, with short descriptions and the like, then it died into a straight up info-less listing :( buried for boring
- ShashPant, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Awesome list up there ;) Regards Ds
- TheWiseNoob, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Synaptic can be used in other distros, and I said "or another package manager"
- daftman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1That list isn't mutual exclusive. Just because people use windows doesn't mean they don't also use Linux. Was it that hard to figure out?
- joeblow1102, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I agree, and Quod Libet also comes with the best music tagging program, Ex Falso.
- dpjames, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1actually its a Top 100 list
- ratsg, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1marked as inaccurate. These are apps that are distributed as source code, and should compile on any Unix, or Unix clone. Not just Linux.
- daftman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1No, it's a top 69 list.
- Nerevar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I don't see what features KTorrent is missing, in my experience it's very comparable to uTorrent.
- Bitwaba, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1mplayer? anybody?
- sacherjj, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Which is why people switched to Ubuntu.
- srg13, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'd really like the whole suite for Linux. Using them with a really light desktop environment would be awesome - After Effects really chews up RAM
- cdmarcus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Either replace Linux with Ubuntu/Debian in the title, or get rid of the Synaptic reference... don't make assumptions about what's in a linux distro's repositories.
- sacherjj, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Really? I loaded Ubuntu, purchased HDHomerun. Installed MythTV Backend and Fronted, through Synaptic Package Manager. Then I went into backend and added two tuners for the HDHomerun and let it scan the channels. (All following a simple guide.) Presto, changeo. I'm recording High Def programs like a TiVo.
It can be really easy if you are careful about your hardware. - Iam9376, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Odd, I thought it was still in beta...
- dbr_onix, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Great list? One of them is "still missing many key features, is under heavy development."..
- famewolf, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Had to be 69... 68 is the speed limit on sex because you have to stop and turn around....or maybe you prefer the "you do me and I'll owe you one" version.
- TheWiseNoob, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3Obviously, I did it on purpose. There WERE 69 apps on the list, but now there are more than 80.
Had to add a little humour ;-) - kaczus, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Checkout pixel - i'm no expert but many say that it's a viable alternative to ps for linux. It's not open source nor free though...
- Shadoglare, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Eh, it's OK, but there are better lists, and and the same apps are listed on about 5140793854714145 other "best linux apps" lists.
- marklarznexyne, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0well for linux maybe, it sure doesn't compare to foobar2000's masstagger.
but yeah, quod libet would be a perfect audio player if the god damned gstreamer supported gapless playback. - GaryS278, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0they offered a beta version of vista on their site when it first came out.
