- oblique63, on 07/11/2008, -3/+27seems more like reasons to avoid apple products in general than just the iphone...
but I agree though, I've been boycotting apple ever since their new ipods were programmed to corrupt themselves upon being mounted on a non-mac/windows computer... - johnsu01, on 07/11/2008, -3/+201. Perhaps people should be free to make that choice themselves, about whether they are skilled enough or willing to deal with any "hassle" :). Also, it's not as though Apple is just providing some kind of software quality assurance service here -- if you attempt to install other software on your own phone, by your own choice, they will call you a criminal. This is a restriction, not a service.
2. This simply isn't true. Jobs *said* he was opposed to DRM but then has done absolutely nothing. emusic.com, amazon.com, rhapsody.com... all DRM-free. Much of it from the very same labels. And Jobs is now pushing DRM on software. Who's making him do that?
3. I'm afraid you're wrong about this. GPS and location information can and has been extracted from phones without the user's consent or knowledge. It doesn't matter what you set your phone interface to.
4. Absolutely -- this is an effort to communicate the importance of voting for the free software option. - jdowland, on 07/11/2008, -1/+13No ogg files... that's a terrible thing about the ipod in general.
OpenMoko does look great:
http://www.openmoko.com/ - Spr0k3t, on 07/11/2008, -1/+10In the latest reign of "everyone has a cellphone but my dog", government funded emergency support systems such as 911 in the US are requiring cell service providers to be able to triangulate the location of every cellphone made after a certain date. This includes the freerunner and it's not something that can be modified on the phone. Out of all the features the G3 has, there are so many issues that still remain.
- Borbus, on 07/11/2008, -2/+10I'm glad the FSF takes the time to write these articles. I wouldn't touch any Apple product with a barge pole due to the restrictions. Now at least I have an article to point people to when I recommend they do not purchase an iPhone.
Also thanks for pointing out openmoko! I might even get one! - johnsu01, on 07/11/2008, -0/+7That is important to keep in mind, with any cell phone. The point I'm trying to get at in the article is that if the software on the phone is proprietary, it can be activated remotely without the user's knowledge, like what Schneier talks about here with the microphone: http://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2006/12/remo ...
So, the GPS features can be activated even if the user tries to turn them off. But yeah, no matter what there's going to be triangulation. - mattlee, on 07/11/2008, -2/+5freerunner is the opposite of iphone.
- thwoom, on 07/11/2008, -1/+3seems like an ad for openmoko more then anything, dugg for the first 4.
- benleefield, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2I just don't understand why Apple is so monopolistic.
They have world class products which the vast majority of people love for their innovative and simple design, yet they feel compelled to engage in restrictive practices like blocking open source software (on their iphone) and blocking other mp3 players from playing itune downloads.
Its a hunch, but I think they would do much better if they opened up and they would certaintly be more liked - which is what the long game is all about. I think they are in danger of tarnishing their brand with a young new generation who simply don't understand and won't accept this behaviour. - polarhei, on 07/11/2008, -1/+3IPhone is good?
Yesterday,I think so because of price.
But I remember something,It is not good as I thought.
Getting one ,costs you about $700.00 with a lot of limitations,It doesn't like a low-priced laptop.
In 2007,some free-tools can handle a 96/24 Sound Clips,But Iphones does not support this,Is it enough to ... some people off? I may be one of these golden ears.
There are lots of things are my ....er!
What the ... in an God damned Ipod? 44.1Khz/16-bit? What is the standard today? Think carefully!
I have been against MONOPOLY And Some dirty Restrictions for years,Besides,We don't do the things very well except Linux.
We only see that Linux systems on Big Datacenters and super-computing,Very good. - Spr0k3t, on 07/11/2008, -0/+1All hail the Schneier. The interesting part about GPS, you can turn off sat feeds, but still receive data.
- MethodOne, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1Too bad I still have a contract with Sprint, a CDMA carrier, until October 2009. The FreeRunner only supports GSM carriers. I might get the FreeRunner and use it with someone that has a decent data plan.
- schestowitz, on 07/11/2008, -5/+5There are other reasons too.

- poftwaresatent, on 07/14/2008, -0/+0Yes, FSF does a good job. Just a bit difficult, with their rhetoric, to convince people who just want the latest cute gadget. Your typical harmless consumer off the street will just think "those free software freaks are just a bunch of conspiracy theorists" and that reduces our credibility.
I try to reuse the gist of the FSF article, but increase chances by toning down the accusations. - gettarat, on 11/24/2008, -1/+1iPhone endorses and supports Digital Restrictions Management (DRM) technology.

Such as ignoring the fact that you can turn off the GPS, set privacy settings so programs don't have access to the location, etc.
- jmreid, on 07/11/2008, -20/+5Some of these reasons are very important to some people. But not everyone.
1. iPhone completely blocks free software. Developers must pay a tax to Apple, who becomes the sole authority over what can and can't be on everyone's phones.
-I'd rather Apple have some control over the apps that users are downloading. I'm sure the general population would rather this as well. Most people can't be bothered to deal with "free" software and some of the hassles it comes with.
iPhone endorses and supports Digital Restrictions Management (DRM) technology.
-poor choice of words. It does not endorse DRM at all. In fact, Apple has been trying to get DRM free content into the store for a while. Not everyone wants to play ball. I'm guessing existing contracts are slowing down some other big labels from support DRM free content.
Also, it's worth mentioning that Apple wasn't the one to demand DRM in the first place. You can bet the content owners wanted DRM all over their music/movies/TV shows.
iPhone exposes your whereabouts and provides ways for others to track you without your knowledge.
-It's a quick flick of a toggle in the system settings and it's off.
iPhone is not the only option. There are better alternatives on the horizon that respect your freedom, don't spy on you, play free media formats, and let you use free software -- like the FreeRunner.
-Aren't you glad you live somewhere that doesn't force you to buy a product? I'm tired of others thinking that their way of doing something is the way I should be doing it. It's my money, it's my time. You buy what you want, I'll buy what I want. There will NEVER be one option for all.
Get over yourself and stop complaining. If people want to buy the iPhone and spend money in the App Store/iTunes Store buying content, AND they are happy with the results, leave them alone. Maybe you don't know best.
