- roebeet, on 09/18/2008, -0/+19If you have an older player, try the Rockbox firmware replacement instead (www.rockbox.org). Free your iPod!
- jjustin01, on 09/17/2008, -1/+19No, it's for Linux, not Ubuntu.
/sarcasm - Sillywombat, on 09/18/2008, -4/+20Dugg for the image of tux listenniing to his ipod
- Gundamdriver, on 09/18/2008, -2/+10Why not simply buy something other than iPod? MP3/4 players from iAudio/ Creative are good too, some of them even have OGG file format support, which iPod doesn't have after so many generations.
- inditech, on 09/18/2008, -0/+7I get buried for pointing out a perfectly valid flaw with these apps? The iPhone/iPod touch world is apps apps apps centric at the mo, how can software without the store facility be 100% useful? My comment was not an OS hater, it was annoyance at Apple!
- jshabad00, on 09/18/2008, -6/+13If it doesn't sync, it's not a great replacement... doesn't anyone listen to podcasts anymore???
- juliohm, on 09/18/2008, -1/+7That might work great for iPods, but if you have an iPhone (or even an iPod Touch), photo managament is still crap. I keep a lot of pictures on the iPhone, and there is nothing close to usable under Linux.
I still have to keep a copy of Windows under the latest VMWare to sync the iPhone.
But, yes... dugg for the cool info. - inditech, on 09/18/2008, -4/+9Will any of them allow you to use the iTunes store? That was the main problem I had when trying these out. Despite some people that hate it, and the fact that I have jailbroken, I still like the app store there. I have a VM win install just for iTunes which is a shame but there doesn't seem to be any other choice.
- Krovvy, on 09/18/2008, -1/+6Songbird rocks, I've used it since .2 and it just keeps getting better with each release.
- obsaysditto, on 09/18/2008, -0/+4dont forget about Exaile
http://www.exaile.org/ - WRXFiles, on 09/18/2008, -3/+7...and if you do use Windows, but don't like iTunes, give SharePod a try. Unlike MS and Apple products, it doesn't assume what you want to do and limit the things you do want to do - it just does exactly what you tell it every time!
http://www.getsharepod.com/ - dougle, on 09/18/2008, -1/+5Just upgraded my iphone to 2.1 and i agree with cozmoz. i'm never buying a locked down apple product again.
- xptweakerntn, on 09/18/2008, -3/+7Forget the list...don't even look at it...just install Amarok. There, I just saved someone from wasting their time reading a list.
- Avian00, on 09/18/2008, -2/+6Agreed. Until any of these programs offers the seamless iPod+podcast integration that iTunes offers, they may as well stop wasting my time. Although, I suppose the entity I should really be angry with is Apple. They could do 2 things to remedy this issue:
1) Port iTunes to Linux.
2) Publish proper iPod syncing specs.
Until that happens, the developers of these apps are forced to reverse engineer, and therefore it will always be a hack. - nxtwrld, on 09/18/2008, -0/+4unfortunately this does not work with iPhone/Touch 2+ firmware ;( Apple change iPod database hashing so no other applications can upload music to the device... I have tried it using Amarok, uploaded my , but it never appeared in iPod library and iTunes refused to work until I completely restore my firmware...
- thejamabides, on 09/18/2008, -0/+4You're doing it wrong.
- cozmoz365, on 09/18/2008, -0/+4Any mp3 Player that can be recognised as a mass storage device works just fine on Linux. I have also been through 2 phones by Sony Erricson that allows me to browse through my mp3's, pictures and ringtones - adding and removing files without any problems or need of drivers.
- jshabad00, on 09/18/2008, -0/+3So you are saying that your vanilla Amarok installation will remove a podcast from your iPod when you remove from your computer? Is that what you are saying? Because I do not find that functionality...
- inactive, on 09/18/2008, -0/+3I use gpodder for podcasts and it works great !
- jshabad00, on 09/18/2008, -0/+3RTFC. No kidding Amarok does podcasts. It does not SYNC them with an iPod... it only TRANSFERS them.
- inigomntoya, on 09/18/2008, -0/+3I was going to get a Creative MP3 player, but when Apple came out with the 80/160 iPod Classic line, the iPods had the best GB/$ ratio.
For the record - I wish I would have gotten something else. I really like my iPod, but I hate that I have to use software to sync it up (instead of just dragging and dropping MP3s to the MP3 player's hard drive). So now I have two copies of every song - which is good for redundancy if my iPod dies. But then again, its also redundancy that I could do without... - xptweakerntn, on 09/18/2008, -0/+3You sir...are completely wrong, and also and idiot. Ok. So it doesn't have party shuffle, but it does have a smart playlist that randomly play songs in your library. It also does not create duplicates when syncing with your iPod, I do it all the time.
- gummih, on 09/18/2008, -0/+3...and read this
http://www.simplehelp.net/2007/07/04/how-to-use-am ... - cawpin, on 09/18/2008, -0/+3I've always liked the idea of Songbird but couldn't ever get it to run until the latest release. It is definitely the best.
- oobuntu, on 09/18/2008, -3/+6what if they are a new convert?
my wife already had an ipod before moving to linux. an attitude like yours would discourage new users. - thejamabides, on 09/18/2008, -0/+3I'm working on the gtkpod libraries now to fix this.
And if you install ipod-convenience when we get gkpod fixed, you can sync over wifi easily and quickly. - missingnoh4x, on 09/18/2008, -0/+3The way the iPod Touch prevents anything but iTunes from mounting it via USB, which I was able to do with my old 5th gen iPod, pisses me off to no end. Having to install a SSH server and manually mount that and everything is a bit ridiculous for a workaround.
Still at least we have some sort of workaround. But the way Apple tries to lock everything down is ridiculous, and I'm never buying any products from them again. - skywake, on 09/18/2008, -2/+5Amarok does podcasts (RTFA). I don't know how well it does the syncing of podcasts to an iPod but I do know you can add podcasts to it (with various options on downloading automatically or streaming and such) and can sync stuff to media players including the iPod.
- inactive, on 09/18/2008, -0/+2Using an iPod Touch with Linux is still extremely difficult. I'm a pretty sharp computer user but I was never able to get my iPod Touch fully functional with Amarok. Sure, old iPods work, but every time the Linux community makes some ground Apple drops a new turd and the process starts all over.
- Krovvy, on 09/18/2008, -0/+2Yes, the current release is MUCH more stable and has significant performance gains from the previous versions. They're also working on more performance enhancements for the next release, which should be out in November.
- unitedatheism, on 09/18/2008, -1/+3Having an iPod and just Linux on the same computer is contradictory, to say the least.
Like "I like to be free when it comes to software, but I'd just love these hardware that keeps everything locked and under control of the people who I bought that from!" - yaveznodo, on 09/19/2008, -0/+2I prefer Banshee's 'Recommended Artists' feature. Don't have to sign into anything, each artist linked directly to Last.Fm (again no sign in needed or a Last.FM account).
- xptweakerntn, on 09/18/2008, -2/+4Oh. So the fact that installing Linux was worth the trouble...but if you have an iPod you paid upwards of $200 for, getting that to work under Linux isn't worth the trouble? Shoot! I would rather Amarok handle my iPod instead of iTunes. If you are using Linux, why would you want a closed source app for something that many open source apps do much better?
- julieBi, on 09/18/2008, -0/+2Dugg as a tribute of tux chilling with his iPod
- inactive, on 09/18/2008, -1/+3Oh and if you want to copy mp3 to and from your iPod, no matter where you are... take a look at http://www.yamipod.com/
Windows, Linux, OS X
Put it on your iPod and always have it handy, even without 'Net ;) - positron, on 09/18/2008, -1/+3Floola!
Manages podcasts, photos, videos, music, playlists, and album art.
Works with your existing iTunes DB without corruption issues.
Cross platform (windows, mac, linux).
Requires no installation and can run as a mobile app directly from your iPod.

*CLAP**CLAP* *CLAP* *CLAP**CLAP* *CLAP* *CLAP* *CLAP**CLAP* *CLAP* *CLAP* *CLAP**CLAP* *CLAP* *CLAP* *CLAP* - cozmoz365, on 09/18/2008, -0/+2My point wasn't to discourage new users. I am just suggesting that an existing Linux user should avoid Apple products like the iPod and iPhone. I would even go as far as boycotting Apple products all together just because of the way they go about there business practices.
- wigren, on 09/18/2008, -0/+1I can't tell if you're a troll or just an ass hole. Judging from your lack of wit though, my guess is ass hole.
- missingnoh4x, on 09/18/2008, -0/+1Also I've noticed when syncing songs via gtkpod, album art gets mixed up and the alphabetical sort fails to ignore 'A', 'The', etc, which causes some odd glitches when scrolling through my library. This was a while back though, maybe those bugs have been fixed.
- ambivalent, on 09/18/2008, -0/+1I use Amarok and gPodder for podcasts. These all have one weakness that doesn't really affect a lot of people though. I use the Nike+ Sports kit for running and none of these will sync my run data. I have to use my fiancee's Windows laptop to do that. That makes me sad... I can't completely abandon Windows due to such a small thing :(
- hollering, on 09/19/2008, -0/+1Okay then, maybe it just suits my needs / tastes better. My key feature was the flexibility in establishing what order you wanted the podcasts to be synched in. Amarok allowed oldest podcasts first before iTunes, which was useful when trying to listening to them in order (seemed like I was always playing catch-up). It was also more flexible in the number of episodes to sync. There are some five-minute podcasts where I'd like several episodes, but in iTunes I have to jump through a couple hoops to get those without pulling several episodes of a 2 hour trance set.
- boobsbr, on 09/18/2008, -0/+1rhythmbox does transfer stuff to your ipod and manages it nicely. having said that, it sucks. every time i'm listening to musing and plug my ipod, it stops playing my playlist and goes to the ipod playlist and does nothing. also it crashes when you drag the progress bar thingie, not all the time, but enough times to get me pissed about it.
it certainly is working ok, it's headed in the right direction, but it needs a lot of improvement. - lonewolfe, on 09/18/2008, -4/+5Dugg for Tux.
- ileftfark, on 09/18/2008, -1/+2Hooking an iPod to a Linux box is like taking an Amish person to the circus. Or something.
- Aurash91, on 09/18/2008, -0/+1Floola is amazing. Supports syncing, photos, videos, podcasts, album art, convert audio/video, grab youtube/ myspace videos.( pretty much anything). its also cross platform (linux, windows, mac)
but im not sure about touch/ iphone support - seenxu, on 09/19/2008, -0/+1did banshee really has the following capability?
"*Metadata searcher using Musicbrainz: Automatically retrieves missing and supplementary metadata for library items, including album art."
question mark... - Knet88, on 09/18/2008, -0/+1So soon the only unique thing that iTunes will be able to do is get one to the iTunes Store?
- oobogart, on 09/18/2008, -0/+1I still can't get anything to sync my ipod classic other than itunes.
- CarzorStelatis, on 09/18/2008, -0/+1Doesn't Banshee do on-the-fly transcoding? I'm sure I saw that mentioned on its website. In other words, you could have a library full of FLAC files and when you sync your iPod it will transfer 256kbps AAC files (or whatever other iPod music format you pick) that it creates at the time.
