- keithcu, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21I tried SUSE Linux a few days ago and only had time for a few hours with it but was majorly impressed, especially compared to Debian (a review I give on another thread on digg.) Dapper, SUSE 10.1, FC5--things are getting innnnnnteresting.
The author starts by saying that Linux won't be ready for the desktop anytime soon but his conclusions at the end demonstrate otherwise. He gets wiser as he writes :-) - m4ff3w, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11http://www.duggmirror.com/linux_unix/3D_Desktop_on_steroids:_SUSE_Linux_10.1/
- seanmc303, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15Just my luck. I installed SuSe 10.0 on a new computer last night. ARRRRRRGGGG!!!
It's already time to upgrade. Double ARRRRRRGGGG!!!
(Fanboy admission) SuSe ROCKS! - jrsims, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Looks like a good time to compare *nixes:

Interest in Suse is about level, Red Hat is obviously diminishing - almost at the same rate as FreeBSD (which is sad!).
- But look at Ubuntu! - jessecollins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Sorry about that, here goes another try...

http://en.opensuse.org/Released_Version#Downloads - MadOgre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I'm loving it. I'm a huge Ubuntu fan too, but SUSE has been my favorite distro since the first time I tried it. Version 10 is a smash hit... 10.1 looks even better. I like the refinements they've made.
I am especially loving how this progress is a continual progression. By the time Vista shows up to the part, we'll be on SUSE 12 and Vista will already be outdated.
Dual booting to XP Pro and SUSE 10 on my laptop, but I might have to swap it for 10.1. The only reason I still have Windows on it... Oblivion and FEAR. If it wasn't for games... I'd not have it. - jessecollins, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13x86 10.1 DVD Torrent:

- frem001, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Every time i see new screenshots of linux i am more and more impressed. I hope more and more people start using it, hopefully china will help in that department.
- a7bat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7The Mad Penguin really needs to do something about their server as it usually gets bombarded when Digg or Slashdot link to it.
- Blaztex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6go past page one and it's got pics of the interface and such
- debian_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Rest assured there are real word applications to the emergence of this eye candy. Off the top of my head the dock and miniwin plug-ins are letting users have live previews of windows that are either minimized to the taskbar or are tabbable to in the alt+tab pane. Things like being able to move around a playing video and have it continue playing smoothly, have true transparency for windows, and the zoom feature for reading hard to make out text are all a great start.
In my opinion, as a technology that is still purely infantile, the progress compiz/xgl has made to help shed *nix of the archaic interface stereotypes held by the none converted is really great. For those who don't want their linux install to be filled with eyecandy they won't use, they have the option not to. For linux as a whole however, if this helps attract more general desktop users, everyone is a winner due to the eventual sway such a userbase will have on hardware vendors towards increased driver support. - Mejogid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I would expect they will soon, and in the mean time if you install a few kde packages you can have much nicer looking qt widgets (kdebase and kdelibs come to mind, but that may not be right). And @billyboobs - what advantage does gnome offer over kde in that situation? SUSE has always been a KDE centered distro, but the fact that XGL (which Novell are working on) works best with gnome, have put alot of work into the tango icons (see http://jimmac.musichall.cz/i.php?i=git2) which are aimed mainly at gnome (kde has its own oxygen project), and have released alot of promising mockups and suggestions for gnome to the public suggests that this approach could be changing.
- MisterCookie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7>< Looks like I finally have to get around to upgrading my version of SuSE, I'm still on 10.0
- pairanoyd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I am using Suse 10.1 and I ran Compix/Xgl on KDE 3.5.1 for about a week.
It sucks ass. Crash after crash after crash. Bug city.
It's neat as hell to look at, major cool factor two thumbs up for appearance but two thumbs down on stability.
I'll be thrilled to go back to it after they work out the bugs.
If you can't put up with frequent crashes stay away from it.
I deactivated Compiz/Xgl and went back to using the stock Xorg 6.9 and everything is fine. I figure they may get it stabilized in a few months, the I'll give it another try.
I don't have the tolerance for buggy crap.
That's my two cents. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9SuSE is NOT throwing all it's weight behind gnome. They are simply including a minimalist gnome to be ran on servers without very much user interaction.
SuSE is and will always be primarily a KDE supporter unless something better comes along. - krewemaynard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@jrsims: replace "red dat" with "fedora" and you get a different perspective:
http://google.com/trends?q=suse%2C+ubuntu%2C+fedora%2C+solaris%2C+freebsd&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all
I'm no Red Hat/Fedora fan, but remember where the momentum is... - antdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Too bad my employer blocks ports 8080 and 8090. :(
- samdu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I've been a Mandrake/Mandriva guy for several years now. Until this weekend. I was having issues getting my Epson Stylus Photo R200 to work on Mandriva 2006 (among other slight problems). On a lark, I decided to format the server and install SuSE 10.1. This is an amazing distro. Except for mail server configuration, everything was pretty much point and click as far as setting the system up. It's the easiest and cleanest Linux distro I've ever installed. Oh, and the R200? Plugged it in, went to YAST2 (I'm SO a YAST convert now), and it was there. Printed a test page and lo and behold it printed. Came up in Samba, too!
- edmicman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Is there a livecd?
- seanmc303, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Are you kidding! I have a 666Mhz SuSe box running the full KDE desktop and you say Yast takes too long to calculate dependencies. It is impossible to say what an average package dependency check and installation takes as far as time goes due to the fact that packages are all different, but I can tell you most of the smaller packages I install on my 666MHz takes less than 30 secs to install or uninstall.
- bloodylip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'm not sure how SUSE does it, but on Gentoo with the xgl-coffee ebuilds, the Qt and KDE window decorator isn't ready yet. But you can still run the Gnome window decorator on a KDE desktop to have all the snazzy effects.
- oddball, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4can we get a mirror with the other 4 pages? I wanna see, I wanna see....
- jbus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yes...If you enable it.
- nxusername, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Nice how I post a constructive comment on something and the KDE zealots mod me down.
- kingprad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You can do it with KDE as well. I installed 10.1 beta 9 a few weeks ago and tried XGL. I got to wondering the very same thing and tried it. It seemed to work just as well under KDE as Gnome. There are probably some differences and it kind of seems like Gnome is preferred, but I didn't notice anything in my fairly simple usage of both environments (email, watching movies, music, etc).
I can't wait until they have XGL or one of its sister projects working with dual monitors. I heard there was a patch floating around but it seemed like a lot of painful work with low chance of success, so I haven't tried messing with it. - sbovisjb1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3NICE Though the asm could take better advantage of the pipline (thats me sounding smart)
- seanmc303, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I haven't used Dapper yet, but I did use Breezy, and I thought SuSe was way more polished. The only upside I saw to Breezy was that it was a lighter install than SuSe 10.0, but I haven't noticed any noticeable performance differences. I thought SuSe really won with the easy installer, driver support, overall configuration, and I haven't seen anything that compares to Yast if you don't mind some easy installs. I just wish that the Yast mirrors had more up to date packages, but the same could probably be said for many packet managers.
- adolfojp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think that SuSE is the most polished GNU/Linux OS ever. I use SuSE and Ubuntu and used to be a Mandrake user.
I think that if SuSE offered a 1 CD distribution it could easily displace Ubuntu as the number 1 Linux distro. - cduquette, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I also think Suse is switching to a more Gnome oriented fashion. Novell bought Ximian (created Evolution and other stuff) and aquired Nat Friedman. Nat Friendman is currently the Vice President of Linux Desktop at Novell. Most of the reviews I've read point out that KDE didn't really get any visual upgrade, but if you compare the art in 10.0 and 10.1 for Gnome, you'll be amazed. 10.1 seriously has some amazing Gnome artwork.
Novell is also throwing their weight behind Mono with lots of code from Banshee, F-spot, iFolder, Beagle and Tomboy. I can't really say there are any/many KDE apps they're responsible for. Other sites have commented saying Nat Friedman is pushing Novell toward Gnome. With all this Gnome support why would Novell's Suse distro throw its support behind KDE? - Hungryhaney, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@trylleklovn:
The 1280x1024 screen resolution is because SuSE is aimed at today's hardware, which includes higher resolution screens. If you want a distro that looks good with smaller screens, there are certainly others out there. I can't find any blame with SuSE going with current hardware.
As a side note, what is your problem with the screen resolution? My server at home is hooked up to a 1024*768 monitor that I barely ever use, but when I do, I still don't seem to have any "bloat". - IMesh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Has anyone gotten Emacs working with XGL and Compiz? Because when I turn it on I can't get text. No Emacs for me means no programming, IRC, or email and until that works I can't use XGL. Same with dual monitors, once those work I can use XGL.

- ChileanGoD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I really want to jump into the Linux bandwagon... Weeks ago i gave it a shot to install that new xgl Kororaa distro into a small HD i have and i fail miserably (Yes... I like all the new eye candy and it gave me the incentive to give it a shot to learn and play with the thing). I really liked the news a while ago that a group was trying to make a standard Linux distro for the masses. Alot of complaint came in the comment section in the form that Linux is about choice and not having one official distro. As a complete and total Linux Noob (I don't know if I can apply to that because I haven't been able to install one yet) I would say its a good thing for a standard version. It would help open the doors for us Linux noobs. Besides I don't think a standard version will ever stop anyone to make its own distro, to have choice.
Anyways... I'm giving a shot to this Linux distro now that it has XGL. It will give me something to brag about and show-off for other that have no idea that Linux even exists. - silenceHR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2OK, kill me for this, cause i just burned ISO and i am about to install 10.1, but..... transparancy as described seems like really usefull.nnhow many times did you have to change from one app to other to get some info?.. simple example, you want to post comment on digg about some article, but you need some quoetes. one way is to move from one window to another OR you could simply make your digg reply window 60% transparant and read the article you are commenting as you type.nnhow many times you had to move from one window to another to see whats there, so you can type?nwith this you have two apps running, one which holds info you need and one in which you type and when you need additional info.. ALT mouse wheel.nnnfor me this is best selling point in years for ANY OS.
- BigBadHoss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2do your job instead of surfing!
- silenceHR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2ohhh... are you by any chance Vista beta tester? @debian - seems like we posted just seconds apart, this isnt pointed at you. :)
- jbus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Try SUSE 10.1 or to make it even easier Ubuntu Dapper Live CD... I have a Belkin wireless card that works out of the box on both of these distros, I couldn't get it to work on any other distros even with ndiswrapper.
- Arramol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why is eye candy considered a bad thing? If you don't want it, fine, but some of us happen to enjoy having a desktop that's both functional and aesthetically appealing. It's not like our computers are exactly strapped for power in this day and age.
- kherrick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've turned on some of the cool X effects like transparency, but my 2.4ghz p4 chokes with this aged video card I have. Anyone have any good recommendations on a good dual head with 128mb of ram or so that works well in Linux?
- kherrick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Okay, replying to my own comment... from the article it says they used this: "The main review machine is running on an AGP NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti4200 with 128MB of RAM, and the second is a run-of-the-mill AGP 32MB NVIDIA TNT card."
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5i'm using dapper atm, it's a fine OS but after seeing those screenshots.... perhaps i should give suse a good solid go.
- theotheragentm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Am I the only one, who is confused by all this push for 3D elements in an OS? It's a good idea when you can look at an object and tell there is some sort of hierarchy, but when you have to interact with 3D elements in some meaningful way, it makes no sense. Your mouse moves left and right, up and down. Microsoft Vista's rolodex window sorter is like this. You can't properly interact with 3D elements with a 2D input device. I can't get to the article, even through cache, but really it doesn't matter. Usability should be the development goal, especially for Linux if it is to gain any sort of respectable market share. I have no problem with 3D, but give me a PowerGlove to interact with it or something along those lines.
- silenceHR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"both examples given (writing a document on OO.o and posting a comment on digg) relate to typing. since both hands are on my keyboard it's faster to hit ALT+TAB instead of holding ALT and scrolling with my mouse wheel."
this might be true, but it personal choice how to use one's computer. ALT+TAB is good, but then you need to remember what you just read and type it, but with with transparancy, you can have BOTH at same time.
as i said, replying article and having original article seen...... NO NEED for A:T+TAB all the time to get you mind in focus on what you want to say.
you simply type in one program and "look through it" at another.
for me this is good. how many times you need ALT+TAB to answer all the points in some article?
with transparency..... -> NONE - barbobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Heres the thing about linux, pretty much the only difference between the distros is their package management system, most features that work in one distro will work in others across the board
that being said http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Xinerama-HOWTO/ - Tsuroerusu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Pick the one of your choice: http://en.opensuse.org/Mirrors_Released_Version#Europe
- vh1`, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love XGL, but I've never seen the point of transparent windows
both examples given (writing a document on OO.o and posting a comment on digg) relate to typing. since both hands are on my keyboard it's faster to hit ALT+TAB instead of holding ALT and scrolling with my mouse wheel. - Continuum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1does SUSE 10.1 have simple dual monitor support? If so, i think i will finally think about making the switch to linux.
- mikeazorin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I think I'll hold off until Ubuntu's next official release.
