- ToadLeg, on 09/28/2008, -0/+10The Acer Aspire One is not the eeepc.
The latest version of Ubuntu could not be designed to work on the Acer Aspire One because Canonical does not have a time machine.
However, Ubuntu does still install and work without tweaks, but the tweaks make it work better. Things have to be tweaked to make Ubuntu more fully work on the One, like it has to be on a lot of systems. The installation medium has to be tweaked (using something other than a CD) because the One does not have a CD drive.
The next version of Ubuntu will come out AFTER the Acer Aspire One came out, so it may be designed to support it.
Ubuntu works on the eeepc, and there is a derivative designed for the eeepc called eeebuntu. - radu79, on 09/28/2008, -1/+9XP is slow as hell on the 8GB SDD.
- Pecheckler, on 09/28/2008, -0/+7The coolest Acer Aspire One hack would be getting Acer to service it under their warranty.
- DanBoodro, on 09/28/2008, -1/+8This little guy is amazing. I bought one about a month ago and absolutely love it. http://i36.tinypic.com/zvgpl.jpg
There is a somewhat large hacking/modding community that can be found at http://www.aspireoneuser.com/forum/index.php and there's tons of "REAL" hacks that can be done with the Aspire One.
The 30 in the article seem more to be just tutorials, but still very informative and helpful for the inexperienced Aspire One owner. - spydon, on 09/28/2008, -0/+6Windows.... *Barks*
- inactive, on 09/28/2008, -2/+7Why? XP would require the installation of hundreds of Dollars-worth of Windoze crap-ware. It would entirely negate the security, stability, and cost advantages of a good Linux installation.
- TurboBeard, on 09/28/2008, -1/+6Get some sheets on your bed you pig.
Love,
Turbo - inactive, on 09/28/2008, -3/+8Its not as easy as just downloading it from the website due to the customised OS in the Aspire One.
- niamu, on 09/28/2008, -0/+3Unfortunate what menial tasks are considered "hacks" these days. Installing software and operating systems?
- specialcases, on 09/28/2008, -0/+3mountain dew is pretty amazing
- stygiansonic, on 09/28/2008, -0/+3Agreed, I am loving my AAO, it packs so much into such a small form factor. Can't recommend it enough.
- thecompkid, on 09/28/2008, -1/+4God, you eee freaks are like parasites. I don't know about Acer's other laptops, but the Aspire One is very well built, and I paid half the price I would have paid for an eee that even comes close to being comparable.
...and you're smoking some serious pot if you think that the eee has the one beat in appearance. - radu79, on 09/28/2008, -0/+3Mandriva 2009 Beta works better than Ubuntu. The WiFi is detected automatically, the sound and mic works fine after a suspend/resume (most of the time), and almost everything works without any tweaks (what doesn't work is hybernate and some power saving stuff).
However, I think I will get back to Linpus, because of the longer battery life and faster boot/operation. - ha3er0, on 06/16/2009, -1/+3http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hack_(technology)
“Hack has several meanings in the technology and computer science fields. It may refer to a clever or quick fix to a computer program problem, or to a clumsy or inelegant solution to a problem. The term is also used to refer to a modification of a program or device to give the user access to features that were otherwise unavailable, such as DIY circuit bending. The general media also uses this term to describe the act of illegally breaking into a computer, better described as cracking.” - gw8t3st, on 09/28/2008, -0/+2"...know one paid us)"
An improper word usage has completely changed the meaning of your sentence. - jamesdew, on 09/28/2008, -0/+2I don't see a lot of buyers remorse on this forum
- lopla, on 09/28/2008, -1/+3i went with an eee 1000h instead. 2 screws and you have access to the ram and a 80gb disk. I upgraded the ram to 2Gb and when ssd's get cheaper will put a big ssd in there. Want to do that with an aspire you gotta take the entire thing apart to add ram and heavily mod to get a disk in. and the eee 1000h has a non glossy led backlit display that rocks. lovin it- oh and it runs ubuntueee perfectly!
- ridestp, on 09/28/2008, -0/+2Gotta say, I love my One. I got it before heading to college, and I haven't even set up my much more powerful desktop yet, as this does all I want it to do (I am not a gamer). The keyboard is a breeze to type on.
- oli35, on 09/28/2008, -1/+2Yeah but Asus beats the Acer in quality. Viscious circle. ah well.
- aenima987, on 09/28/2008, -0/+1Some *****' Mountain Dew!!!11!!!11!
- Chicken001, on 09/30/2008, -0/+1I'll stick with my 701.
I've already bought it, and it suites my needs. An aftermarket made battery gave me 4+ hours of battery life. It's for internet, messenger, and emails. Fulfills it's duties. :) - WomensUnderwear, on 09/28/2008, -0/+1no-one
- NidStyles, on 09/28/2008, -2/+3I have the Eee PC 4g 701 myself. Sort of wish I had saved for the Acer now though. I might grab one later on though, especially if they offer the dual-core Atom in them... Neat little Netbooks.
Acer has the Asus beat in power, and usability by leaps and bounds. - insanebrain, on 09/28/2008, -0/+1I use Ubuntu on my Aspire One. Runs like a charm.
- lopla, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1also, the eee 1000h can do 7hrs on a charge :) I got mine for $429bucks bhphoto.com probably even cheaper now..
- Chicken001, on 09/30/2008, -0/+1@thecompkid
I personally have a grudge against Acer because of their cheap products. It's cheap for a reason. On a personal experience, every product I've had from them became defective with a horrible technical support. Mind you, people will have different opinions, but I'd stay away from them with a 10 foot pole.
My Asus 701 is cheap and well is pretty cheaply made but it's durable. My current PC has an ancient Asus motherboard, but I'm not planning to stick with them the next time I build another computer. - kiddee, on 10/07/2009, -0/+1acer aspire one
http://www.aceraspireones.us - jamesdew, on 09/28/2008, -0/+1i really have considered getting this after someone stole my eeePC 4G, the only thing putting me off is the poor battery life. Doesn't this bother anyone else?
- jimbo100, on 09/28/2008, -0/+1battery life will last you about 2 and a half hours on the original linpus operating system, if this still bothers you, there is the (expensive) option of the 6 cell battery (extends battery life to about 6 hours, but sticks out of the body of the laptop)
If you just want something to browse the web or go on msn on, then the Aspire One is a really good choice
(i got mine from circuit city for 310 dollars) - eljitto, on 03/10/2009, -0/+1I have no idea why, but my Acer Aspire One, Brought From Best Buy, has 2 cores!!!!!!!!!
It is NOT the N330 Processor because it does not have support for 64 bit architecture!!!!!!
I don't know if they messed up on mine or if it is a problem with the shipment, nut i am happy!!! - pythonweb, on 09/06/2009, -0/+0A clumsy or inelegant soultion to a problem is a kludge, not a hack.
- WomensUnderwear, on 09/28/2008, -1/+1no dual-core atoms in netbooks, sorry. asus destroys acer in every aspect you care to mention, btw.
- antoniuk, on 09/28/2008, -2/+2Too bad Acer is too stupid to realize sound on websites without user acknowledgment is irritating to say the least. completely turned me off to this.
- adamj623, on 03/18/2009, -0/+0eljitto,
it doesnt really have 2 cores. They all say that. it's because the hyper threading technology is picked up as a second core. this also happens on places like canirunit.com to see if your computer is compatible with games.
I've read that with the HT tech the core is really comparable to a 2.4ghz single core - thekeem, on 12/12/2008, -0/+0Why? You're not going to find a wifi hotspot that doesn't have an outlet nearby.
- jimbo100, on 09/28/2008, -2/+1I love my One. It's now running One-linux, and everything works perfectly. I prefer One-linux over XP because it runs quicker and takes up less storage space, and it runs a lot faster.
It will be getting an extra 1GB of RAM shoved in it soon :D - WomensUnderwear, on 09/28/2008, -1/+0open your eyes. ALL OTHER NETBOOKS ARE CLEARLY INFERIOR
- WomensUnderwear, on 09/28/2008, -2/+0the 1000h is the only sensible choice in the netbook game. all the others are crippled in very annoying ways, and are causing endless buyers remorse for the mugs who got suckered
- wah2war, on 09/28/2008, -3/+0Well, nice hack guys!
- zombies187, on 09/28/2008, -7/+2When is Ubuntu going to work on the eeepc without tweaking?
