- Lokonopa, on 02/09/2009, -0/+20I've never understood the war between Gnome and KDE users. There are so many different environments to choose from, why bother bickering over the most used two? Isn't that what Linux is all about, not arguing about which is better because we have so many choices available?
We might as well drop every operating system that uses the Linux kernel because that would make us no better than the Mac OS X and Windows fanboys. I guess sides will form in every situation, regardless of the lack of logic used to drive up opposition.
I'll have to try out ROX Filter. - woxidu, on 02/09/2009, -0/+16Blender on a System Applications list? Really? Some cool things, but this list lacked focus in a big way. Who has a use for Firestarter but doesn't already know about OpenSSH? Dugg anyway...
- nkassi, on 02/09/2009, -0/+14I will never understand why people troll
- dolbersen, on 02/09/2009, -6/+20Why is PuTTY on the list? IT'S A WINDOWS APP?!
And gzip? Seriously? That needs to be mentioned?
"CalmAV"? Anti-virus?!?!
Buried for being too lame to live - benbrooks101, on 02/09/2009, -2/+14Why is the screenshot of Putty running XP?
- GoldEdition, on 02/09/2009, -6/+14Excellent list! Just what I needed and just when I needed it!
- buckrogers1965, on 02/09/2009, -0/+6Trollin' Trollin' Trollin'!
Keep that chat a rollin'
Rawhide! - zacheos, on 02/09/2009, -5/+11Great list... I don't generally Digg lists, but this one make the cut.
- svivian, on 02/09/2009, -1/+6Half of the apps have Windows equivalents, but whatever. And funny how one of the features of Blender is "a steep learning curve". :/
- MadHarvey, on 02/10/2009, -0/+51. Throw up a website with some ads
2. Make a list of popular Linux tools that everyone knows about with the bare minimum of discussion to make it appear that there is actual content on the page.
3. ???
4. Profit!
Oh wait, the ??? is submit to Digg and collect ad revenue. - MadHarvey, on 02/10/2009, -0/+4Because, why the hell would anyone use it on Linux? I was wondering why it was in the article to begin with.
- KloroFormd, on 02/09/2009, -0/+4Not to mention "Srchives" and "Spplications"
- eigenweasel, on 02/09/2009, -0/+3That's because the URL contains an embedded ***** filter.
- jownz, on 02/09/2009, -0/+3Mad props for including Conky and Rox Filer!
If Fluxbox was mentioned then I'd give article 10/10.. unfortunately 'admin' needs to settle for a solid 9.5/10. - maz2331, on 02/09/2009, -1/+4And ClamAV isn't so much to protect the Linux box - it's there to protect client machines (cough, Windows, cough) from malware that could pass through a server.
I use it along with qmail-scanner to filter e-mail. - codelogic, on 02/10/2009, -0/+3This list should be titled "23 Random Applications".
- codelogic, on 02/10/2009, -0/+3and at the same time useless on Linux due to the presence of OpenSSH.
- edwford89, on 02/09/2009, -0/+3"A steep learning curve" is the phrase most commonly associated with Blender.
- inactive, on 02/09/2009, -3/+6That my friend is one hell of a great list..definitely useful...a lil crappy applications there as well..but overall..i digg it!
- catfoodgood, on 02/09/2009, -0/+2Apparently, S is the new A. Too many typos for me.
- DjViper, on 02/10/2009, -0/+2Digg.com = stupid lists for lazy people made by people who have zero blogging skills but want some traffic on their site anyway
Seriously, making a "list" or a top# of something does actually require some "research" you know, this list was a prime example of this.
Why doesn't someone make a list of all the useless digg-lists, that's something I might read - Now before I get hated on; No I don't want to make that list simply because I don't read enough of them to feel "competent" to do so :P - Crnii, on 02/09/2009, -3/+5this is a great post..thank a lot for this …really helped in finding apps for my ubuntu box!
- jamdogg, on 02/09/2009, -0/+2What's the windoze equivalent of kismet? Oh yeah there isn't one.
- shredswithpiks, on 02/09/2009, -1/+3putty exists for other platforms... although it's usefulness might be questionable
- inactive, on 02/09/2009, -2/+4PuTTY is cross-platform.
- KhaaL, on 02/09/2009, -0/+2I'm a blender fan, but is it really a "system application"?
- jamdogg, on 02/09/2009, -0/+1You need the anti virus for the one virus created for linux as proof of concept.
- PinkyTheWinky, on 02/10/2009, -0/+1Calm antivirus: "Please don't panic... you have a virus. Don't worry." * relaxing music plays *
- johnomaz, on 02/09/2009, -3/+4So, does 500@ekiga.net come pre-bookmarked? -.^ -.^
- inactive, on 02/09/2009, -0/+1Well, I can't say I know what others have to say about GNOME vs. KDE, but I can tell you what I've seen.
When GNOME came out, KDE was well ahead of them. A certain prominent person (and leader) of the GNOME team made it their goal to completely trash KDE's image. They took up the GPL cause and bashed the completely free (GPL) KDE by tying it to the not-quite-free Qt. Qt being the graphical toolkit KDE depends on. This person, mind you, didn't give a DAMN about freedom (GNU sense). He was starting a software company that was based around the Red Hat-GNOME connection.
And if the GNOME leader being a complete asshat wasn't enough, there was the early GNOME development, uh, methodology. I was there, and I saw a lot of what they did. Gnumeric was a prime example of their idiocy, as they rushed to catch up to KDE they slapped code together in pure cut-and-paste fashion. And the irony of it all is on Slashdot you could see people praise GNOME and turn around and bash Microsoft for shoddy software.
Guess I should also mention what I witnessed once on IRC. Was sitting on GIMP net (the IRC network for Gtk+, GNOME, and The GIMP) one day when the above mentioned ***** decided to get a few GNOME people to join a KDE chat channel on a different network and bash KDE. This guy is like the Karl Rove of the software world, with his complete PR manipulation.
I did like the Gtk+ and GIMP guys. They were cool. But the GNOME guys were arrogant asses, who thought they were going to be the next superstars of silicon valley. Like a Netscape or Google. - rpelayo, on 02/09/2009, -1/+2Usually these lists suck but this was quite a novel one. Lot's of apps I wouldn't normally consider.
- xiangxianni, on 04/20/2009, -0/+1Go to http://ubuntuguide.net to find more ubuntu tips
- benbrooks101, on 02/10/2009, -0/+1True...
ssh works just fine from a terminal - SpeedStix, on 02/10/2009, -0/+1I think you have missed the fact of why they have clam antivirus...
"designed especially for e-mail scanning on mail gateways"
Emails can have viruses in their attachments... - raydeen, on 02/09/2009, -0/+1Dugg for XFE. Definitely putting it on all my Linux boxes and will be putting the Mac port on my MacBook.
http://xfe.darwinports.com/ - ruler4, on 02/09/2009, -0/+0APTonCD may not be so useful for rpm based distros.
- jihadforwhat, on 02/10/2009, -1/+1It is a truly effective way to avoid Microsoft, IE, and Outlooks.
I don't have to buy new hardware every time new version comes out.
After 20+ years experience with all versions of Windows and 10+ years experience with Linux distributions I have one feature under one application in Windows that I can not find an acceptable for in Linux.
Plus I can run various version of Linux on older hardware platforms that Windows is not intelligent enough to figure out. Linux does not have "The Blue Screen of Death". - BaconOclock, on 02/10/2009, -0/+0Lamest List Ever
- Chipesh, on 02/10/2009, -0/+0Don't download anything. Check repositories.
- krewl, on 02/10/2009, -0/+0Shampoo is better! I go on first and clean the hair!
- tbranham, on 02/09/2009, -4/+3I've never understood the war between the Democrats and the Republicans. There are so many different parties to choose from, why bother bickering over the most used two? Isn't that what Democracy is all about, not arguing about which is better because we have so many choices available?
Sorry, I had to go there.
You're right, of course. I'm primarily a Gnome user, but my first love is still Fluxbox. - hamobu, on 02/09/2009, -6/+3It is OK list, but I dugg it because I am hungry for linux news.
- ruest, on 02/09/2009, -6/+1antivirus in the teaser - FAIL!
- Angus5, on 02/09/2009, -17/+1I will never understand why people use Linux...
