- Spr0k3t, on 11/16/2008, -3/+135Holy crap... that site is a disaster.
- anuban, on 11/16/2008, -4/+123Thanks a lot guys for all your feedback. I have tried to incorporate some of the suggestion including removing the background, changing the 'baby-poo green' color.
Let me know if it loads faster and if it is better than before.
I always believe, "Be friend with the critics." Because they will help you improve faster than your best friends.
Thanks

- inactive, on 11/16/2008, -13/+50Wow - I could not even stand your web "design" more than 6 seconds.
Are you coming from a win-turd background ?
Who needs all these "effects" ?
My eyes would get sore watching that stuff more than 10 sec.
It does not mean I am not missing something by not comparing your list to mine, but this kind of "special effects" pages make me sick.
Goof luck though ... with Ubu you are on the right track. - falcon1, on 11/17/2008, -1/+3722. Profit...

- DonJuanAussi, on 11/16/2008, -6/+35It is a pity that in the Linux community, there are so few who can take constructive criticism or advice.
- AssCrackJack, on 11/16/2008, -2/+30For the uninitiated, you can fresh install Ubuntu and most of the stuff he suggests faster than that ***** page will load.

- kd420, on 11/16/2008, -2/+25What's wrong with the website? Who doesn't like baby-poo green on black, with impossible to read fonts?
- Spr0k3t, on 11/17/2008, -0/+19Your site takes a very long time to load and is inundated with hoards of useless gimmicky links to other sites. Due to the massive amounts of scripting, the page uses quite a load of memory--cooking processors as the page renders. There is a good reason why the front page of google.com loads as fast as it does and why there is nothing more than just a few short links with a search feature. Consider the marketshare Yahoo had prior to Google and how much of a shift there was.
Cut out 80% of the javascript to start. Reduce the number of social links to one on a separate "about me" page. Redo the style with a little less overlapping code. Drop the number of externally linked files to as low as you can get. That will help.
Oh yes, since you are new to digg... don't include a link to your site with your comments... it's considered comment spamming. And remember, criticism is always constructive regardless of the content. - ryanonfire, on 11/17/2008, -1/+2021. ????
- ScottoGato, on 11/17/2008, -0/+17Mine only goes to #5 :(

- fadain, on 11/16/2008, -1/+15Nice list, I install more or less the same applications on a fresh install. Another interesting utility is 'startupmanager' which lets you tweak Grub and boot splash settings and themes.
- anuban, on 11/17/2008, -1/+15Thanks a lot for your suggestions.
I will try to incorporate some of those for sure.
Thanks again - stuy486, on 11/17/2008, -0/+13Don't use 1280x800 images if they're only going to take up ~200x300 pixels. Resize them at them first at the very least...
- TrevorPace, on 11/17/2008, -4/+16My wireless has worked perfectly from the get go. And I didn't pay $2000 for a ***** operating system.
- daengbo, on 11/17/2008, -0/+12Sadly, several of the suggestions include mistakes -- no need to install restricted-extras AND GStreamer extra codes, for example. Also, he states that choosing extra effects will activate your GPU driver, which it won't. A for effort. C for execution.
- ileftfark, on 11/17/2008, -0/+11Ndiswrapper is not a driver, and there are plenty of wireless cards that don't require it at all. But other than that, your post was 100% accurate :-)
- inactive, on 11/17/2008, -2/+13It reminds me of a website from 1995
- Smuikas, on 11/17/2008, -0/+9@anuban:
A quick firebug analysis of your HTTP usage reveals:
3mb of data loaded on a page load
2mb of data from cache
208 http requests
Many of these are from other domains (e.g., adbrite).
using http://analyze.websiteoptimization.com :
- adbrite could be compressing its stuff. That's not under your control (maybe you should use google ads?)
- You're using a LOT of external files. Are all of them necessary? I'm seeing domains like revresponse.com, statcounter.com, mixx.com, commentluv.com, twitter.com, blogtoplist.com, and so on and so forth.
- Dunno if it's possible for you, as your design is not very image-laden (I didn't see most of the images that it loads, in fact) - but look into CSS sprites. Loading one image and slicing it up with CSS == http header overhead reduction.
- Your HTML file itself is 70kB. A lot of your JS is in-line. This is baaaaaad. Try organizing your JS into a library. If you can't do that yourself, you probably shouldn't be using so much JS on your site.
- Try to cut down your linkspam. People care about the sites YOU care about. Do you read all these sites daily? Do you expect your readers to? If they're not sites you read daily and want your readers to read daily, don't link to them. Readers come to your site to read the content, and find out what YOU recommend. They don't want to wade through 600 links to stuff they don't really care about. A lot of these links look like feed lists.
- Label clouds, while kinda cool to look at, aren't useful on every single page of your site. Maybe on the main page?
- Keeping your entire archive on the sidebar isn't so hot. Try making a separate page for it. If people want to peruse your archive, they'll do it.
- Any more than this and i'm going to have to bill you for my time :)
(also point: your site would take 30 seconds to load on a T1. Think about that for a moment. That's over 8 minutes on a 56k) - bantam, on 11/17/2008, -3/+111. Uninstall it.
All in joking people Ubuntu is great but i had to say it lol - ohmysac, on 11/17/2008, -0/+8Well, it's free for one. Also, some people like having something a little different than what is normal. Kind of like porn.
- ethana2, on 11/17/2008, -0/+7Lots of us dual boot...
Same deal as Ubuntu on the PS3; one OS for games and one OS that's actually decent for desktop usage. - CiDaemon, on 11/17/2008, -0/+7Mine goes up to #11.
- triplec110h, on 11/17/2008, -0/+7ubuntu doesn't come with VLC, and installing it should have been on this list
- AllenHSmilden, on 11/17/2008, -0/+7 read up http://www.w3.org/
- codyjoe, on 11/16/2008, -1/+8I agree the web page is hard on the eyes, the list was great, but most already the apps listed.
- LastDitchHero, on 11/17/2008, -0/+6This isn't really a good list. Also the Oxygen icons are far better than the default Ubuntu ones. Ubuntu Tweak helps do a few things that make your life easier. Also installing the real OpenOffice. Google Desktop, Picasa, Google Gadgets, Dropbox, Virtualbox, Adobe Reader and Adobe Air are some great apps.
- Smuikas, on 11/17/2008, -0/+6Or, you know, configure it to look better than both =p
- danr2c2, on 11/17/2008, -1/+7AHhhhhhhhh! That STUPID annoying Windows Error sound is driving me insane. I can get past the crappy layout but that ridiculous, never ending pinging noise from the ad was too much.
YOUR SITE SUX!!!! - subxero37, on 11/17/2008, -0/+5su root doesn't work by default on Ubuntu, since the root account technically is inactive.
sudo -i will give you a root prompt. Also, just do "rm -fr *", since the f flag will force deletion.
Wait, why am I helping people hose their operating system and data?
Evolutuon, whether or not he spelled evolution correctly, is definitely right here. Don't do this. - Hermmunster, on 11/17/2008, -0/+5But they don't lie.
Linux is cool. I use everyday and couldn't be happier. - Smuikas, on 11/17/2008, -0/+5Except nobody would put up a 5mb page with 208 http requests back in 1995.
- Smuikas, on 11/17/2008, -0/+5Or, you know, use it for work. And then go home and use your windows machine to play.
- 3242130193, on 11/17/2008, -1/+6What about VLC
Or does Ubuntu come with that default these days? It's been a while for us.... - HonoredMule, on 11/17/2008, -0/+5Or in this case, flat out criticism. But I'll take honesty over kindness anyway.
- maxpower2911, on 11/17/2008, -4/+8#1. Go on forums and desperately and fruitlessly try to get everything to work.
- thcobbs, on 11/17/2008, -2/+6wussy!
Do it all manually... like the geek you should be! - Mujokan, on 11/17/2008, -0/+4ugh...
- inactive, on 11/17/2008, -2/+6NDISWRAPPER
- winkydo, on 11/17/2008, -2/+6poor english. sounds like a spammer wrote the list. there is no word to describe the site design.
the list is fair. if you're new to the ubuntu scene, this would be a good list to go by.
if the site theme was a little clearer, had less ads on the sidebar and on link roll-overs, and if the english was not so 'nigerian spammer' dialect, i think they'd be on to something. - Hermmunster, on 11/17/2008, -1/+5Yes his web design sucks, and badly, but artistic talent transcends the OS.
- mithrasinvictus, on 11/17/2008, -0/+4http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww ...
- Evolutuon, on 11/17/2008, -0/+4Big no no.
